    5 out of 5 stars Best Cookbook I own!!!.......2007-08-14

A few years ago I got this book as a gift and haven't stopped using it since. The soups are fantastic! They are easy and healthy and a fantastic way to fall in love with soups and fresh food! The recipes are inspired from all over the world. The directions are simple and easy to read while you are cooking. And my favorite part of the book: it is organized into seasons. On a cold night have Curried Spinach and Potato Stew. On a hot summer night try some Garden Gumbo. It really highlights what is in season. I use water for the vegetable stock for all the recipes and they have been very filling without the need for meat, or chicken base.

    I highly recommend this book!

This has everything from soups to bread. These recipes are high quality and really fun to make. This book gives a kick to cooking!

5 out of 5 stars An excellent cookbook and a must for any vegetarian shelf!.......2002-01-25

I was compelled to write this review (my first on Amazon) because I wanted to let others know how fundamental this cookbook has become for my kitchen. I bought this book off the shelf at a Borders (sorry Amazon!) when a friend of mine spotted it there-- just what I was looking for and the instructions seemed to be written in a straightforward manner. My first attempt was the GardenFest Gazpacho, which I made one 4th of July weekend. It got great reviews 'round the table. I later tried the Roasted Sweet Corn and Sweet Potator Chowder, to which I can just say "wow." And those were just the summer soups. As I type this, the Moroccan Lentil and Kale Stew is simmering on the stove... Although the author recommends fresh ingredients, I have substituted canned and frozen plenty of times with fine results. Although I haven't tried them, the author does also include breads and other treats to accompany the dishes. I heartily recommend this cookbook to those who can already picture a hot bowl of stew, a mug of cider and a blissful evening to enjoy both.

    4 out of 5 stars very good!.......2001-05-18

The book is well written, easy to follow, will be liked by the experts and novices alike. The author uses low-fat alternatives to cream and whole milk,in addition a large variety of veggies and spices. I have picky eaters at home, and now I get them to eat lots of healthy food and love it as well. The parts I found difficult were some ethnic recipes. Not all grocery stores carry those ingredients, and the one we have locally is regarded as well-stocked. Nevertheless, I think this is an excellent addition to my recipe collection.

5 out of 5 stars Articulate witty and well written.......1998-02-19

Jay Solomon offer up some of the most interseting stories for many excellent recipies. He should consider a sequal.

        Book Description

In the annals of fashion history, French couturier Paul Poiret (1879–1944) is known for liberating women from corsets and introducing pantaloons into their wardrobes. However, it is Poiret’s remarkable innovations in the cut and construction of clothing, made all the more remarkable by the fact that he could not sew, that secures his legacy.
This essential book is the first to explore Poiret’s radical modernity from a number of perspectives. Essays by renowned scholars describe the historical context of his work; its relation to the dominant artistic discourses of the early 20th century; his muse, Denise Poiret, and her influence on his work; and his role in the paradigmatic shift to a new ideal of feminine beauty. Poiret’s entrepreneurship, his creation of an atelier to extend his influence beyond fashion to the art de vivre, and his relationship to the workshops of the Wiener Werkstatte are also discussed.
Poiret’s innovative creations are represented by colorful pochoirs (stencils), personal photographs from the Poiret family archives, and newly commissioned photographs of Poiret’s masterworks.

        5 out of 5 stars Marvelous!.......2007-09-02

Mr. Koda and The Costume Institute scores with this lovely exhibition catalog! While not as lavish or sumptuous as The Philadelphia Museum of Art's 2003 Shocking! The Art and Fashion of Elsa Schiaparelli by Dilys Blum (at this juncture the absolute gold standard for Costume exhibition catalogs) this remains nonetheless an absolutely gorgeous volume. A perfect counterpoint if you will, to the even more lavish 1987 Rizzoli volume Poiret by Yvonne Deslandres. The current Poiret is a feast for the senses, especially, if you were unable to visit the exhibition in-person. You shan't be disappointed.

A note about Rizzoli: In the decades of the mid 1980s and early 1990s this publishing house offered some of the most beautiful volumes devoted to the great couturiers. If you haven't already acquired them, I highly recommend each of them. The first was the aforementioned Poiret, followed with Christian Dior by Francoise Giroud in 1987; Balenciaga by Marie-Andrée Jouve and Jacqueline Demornex in 1989, and Vionnet by Jacqueline Demornex in 1991. Hopefully, Rizzoli is commencing such a series once more with the November publication of Lanvin!

As the revival of long-dead haute couture houses continues, of late with Vionnet (as yet another ready-to-wear venture) in addition to the aforementioned volume, I also recommend the spectacular Madeleine Vionnet by Betty Kirke published in 1998

        5 out of 5 stars Poiret.......2007-08-01

I think this is the best format for a costume/fashion book of a designers work Each article is photographed on a white mannequin in a white space with beautiful lighting. Each garment is shown in a full length photo and some have front back and detail views. For those who want to understand the cut of clothing, this provides as much info as one can get short of seeing the garment itself.

4 out of 5 stars Mega coffee table book.......2007-07-12

This large tomb is a gorgeous accompaniament to the ongoing exhibition at the Met. Most of the book consists of full-page photographs on high-quality matte paper. While I'm a couple thousand miles from the exhibition, the book's photos means it's possible to see Poiret's wonderful clothes in close detail--and how amazingly timeless many of them were--as in you really could wear them today.

So, why four instead of five stars? Because the text is good, but not superlative. Lots of good information about Paul Poiret, but I'd like to have had something that places him in the context of other designers--how they were influenced (if they were)and a livelier writing style--good fashion writing, even of the historical ilk, should be witty.

It is, as I say, a gorgeous coffee table book. These days, it sits on a side table next to my couch because the matte gold cover just looks so darn good. I would buy this book if I were an interior designer just for decorative purposes.

                        Book Description

In Couture Culture, Nancy Troy offers a new model of how art and fashion were linked in the early twentieth century. Focusing on a leader of the French fashion industry, Paul Poiret, Troy uncovers a logic of fashion based on the tension between originality and reproduction that bears directly on art historical issues of the period. This tension lies at the heart of haute couture, which, although designed for the wealthy, was also intended to be adapted for sale in department stores and other clothing outlets that catered to a broader consumer market. Troy examines the relationships between elite and popular culture, the professional theater and the fashion show, as well as the presumed polarity between Orientalist and classical sensibilities. She shows how Poiret and other designers patronized the arts and presented themselves as artists not only to sell their individual dresses to wealthy clients but also to promote the mass production of their designs. The contradictions she uncovers suggest surprising parallels with the readymades and fashion-related work of Marcel Duchamp, who explored the questions of originality and authenticity raised by couture culture during the 1910s and 1920s.

In contrast to dominant accounts of early twentieth-century art that have dismissed fashion as superficial, fleeting, and feminized, Troy's more nuanced approach reveals conceptual structures and marketing strategies shared by modern art and fashion in these years.

                        Book Description

The big design surveys of the past few years tend to have two things in common: a lot of creative design and very few women designers. Dish is here to set the record straight. This exciting collection features new work by over forty emerging and established female designers from over fifteen countries.
The innovative, cutting-edge work in Dish provides a fresh take on current trends in product design for the home, including furniture, ceramics, glassware, lighting, and textiles. Works range from Monica Nicoletti's "Place Holders" moving boxes that serve as transitional furniture to Matali Crasset's "Phytolab" that combines plants and plastic in a bathroom project. They explore materials, from Sara Unruh's chemically treated silk fabric to Anette Hermann's rubber and metal chair, in which the user becomes part of the construction. Each designer is featured with examples of her work, biographical information, and a personal statement that encapsulates her approach. A foreword by Susan Yelavich and essays by experts in making, selling, and critiquing contemporary design offer insights into the conceptual, aesthetic, functional, and political nature of the work. All together, this book dishes out the hottest work around.

5 out of 5 stars Beautiful and informative.......2006-04-04

I had the opportunity to read this as I was stuck at a party and it was on the coffee table... What a treasure! While I had some very basic knowledge of the impact of shape and color in domestic spaces, this book clarified that which I thought I already knew then expanded upon it tremendously after establish a solid vocabulary.
A great book for any homeowner or anyone interested in design and interior spaces.

                        5 out of 5 stars a compelling look at design's next generation.......2005-10-16

This collection of thirty young designers' work is inspiring. Their ideas are diverse, compelling, and innovative, just what you hope a showcase like this would be. Each designer is represented by a short statement and a handful of photographs of project, and this is accompanied by a handful of essays and designer biographies too.

The connective thread through this talent is that the designers are women. That is as light a touch as the editor seemed to want to put on it - it is not a dogmatic approach like "women design in this way..." although you could point to a certain continuity of elegance, of wit, it would be difficult to argue (and the book doesn't try to force the point) that these necessarily are gender issues in design. In fact I think that the opposite and more optimistic point is where the book really succeeds - that contemporary women designers are creating such a diverse, multithreaded output that attributing certain inevitable characteristics merely to gender might be a limiting approach.

This is an excellent book and I would recommend it to anyone interested in contemporary design.
