Sallie Williams has put together the definitive reference guide to the vegetable, alphabetically presenting 100 kinds of vegetables, greens, and beans (artichokes to zucchini), with more than 400 associated recipes. Let's say a friend hands you a basket of fennel from her garden. What do you do with it? The chapter on fennel discusses not just its history and flavor, but how to select a good bulb, how to store and prepare it (microwave, boil, and steam), plus it provides several fennel dishes (steamed with Parmesan, sautéed with red pepper, braised with red onion, roasted, stir-fried, or in salad) and includes suggestions for good companion dishes. Fond of tomatillos but unclear on the cooking concept? Rutabagas in the farmer's market but no recipes coming to mind? Vegetables on the Side employs a remarkably simple yet practical concept, offering inspiration to menu preparation and cutting down on the dreaded vegetable storage-bin rot. --Stephanie Gold

The recipes sound yummy!.......2006-07-28
I would like to have this book and perhaps in the future I will buy a copy. Some people may not like it because the author doesn't mind using cream, oil, wine and cheese. To me, it gives food flavor and good mouth-feel. That's important to me. I rather enjoy my food than to constantly worry about my health. I don't need to be super slim. And the French eat rich foods, and they are not as fat as us Americans. We eat too much, that's the problem.
One of my favorites.......2006-04-04
I keep checking this book out of the library, so I guess I'm just going to have to break down and buy my own copy. It is one of the two vegetable cookbooks I turn to again and again, the other being Deborah Madison's "Vegetarian Cooking for Everyone". Several recipes are given for each vegetable, and most are easy to prepare. If you want to include a varied selection of vegetables in your diet, and you want eating them to be a pleasure, then this book will serve you well.
Fatty Vegetables on the Side.......2005-09-09
This cookbook includes recipes for a wide array of vegetables as well as interesting background on the origin and distribution of each vegetable in human societies. Unfortunately the recipes tend to be high in fat. Most of the recipes include generous portions of butter, oil, or heavy cream. Nutritional information is not included for the recipes. People should eat more vegetables, but with the obesity epidemic, these recipes are not the best way to improve our diets.
Vegetables - the one book to have.......2004-12-07
This book is one of the top five in my kitchen - the only one soley for vegetables. After a trip to a farmers market - this is where you go to learn how to cook the Japanese eggplant or the Jerusalem artichoke or the rabe.
fantasitic.......2001-08-07
I never thought I would need to purchase a cookbook about vegetables but I was proven wrong. This is a book that is well worth the money you pay for it. From a-z vegetables are arranged in chapters that begin with a discription of each with it's history, storage, how to choose and cooking methods. What then follows is a collection a recipes for each vegetable that ranges from the common place to the not so common. The standard is that all the recipes are very tasty, well explainded and easy to accomplish. Since purchasing this book, when I see a good looking vegetable I will buy it and then go home and look through the book to find how I will prepare it. I have never been disappointed. The author will often even give suggestions on what to prepare as an entree to accompany the vegetable dish.

great quilting book for all.......2007-03-28
I was very pleased with "Quilts for My Sister's House". It has a wide variety of projects, both skill-wise and size-wise. I can't wait to make up some. It was definitely a typical "Thimbleberry" publication--and one of their better ones at that.

Great under the cover ideas..........2007-09-21
This little treasure will have you looking at cast off items with a more resouceful eye. Many of these items would not get a second glance but the author has found interesting ways to repurpose flea market or discarded items. The project on the front cover is an example of a creative way to use those small side boards once part of old dining room sets. I am a fan of stripes, so the small dressers done in wide stripes has great appeal as well as a playful side. The techniques suggested can be applied to a variety of objects not just the ones illustrated in the book. I can't wait to go out this week end and rescue some unloved objects and give them a new lease on life. Undoubtedly this book is a great find...one of the best for sparking new ideas for those low on cash but high on imagination.

Check it out of the library before buying.......2003-01-05
I agree the rusty chair/furniture and hospital guerny are not very appealing. This book is good for little tips and odds and ends but not as good as Better Homes "Cottage Style" book which I have to say is THE BEST. I am glad I checked it out of the library before I bought it. It went a little to over the top on the shabby chic/flea market look for me not very elegant. The pictures are good because of professional photos but I bet if you were in a home filled with some of this stuff it could end up looking a little too flea-ish. Check it out first at the library.
Chic yet fun.......2002-03-07
As a graduate design student, I am impressed with the quality of the rooms shown in this book. Very chic yet simple. Unlike some books on this topic, this one is filled with smart, chic, sensible, stylish ideas for how to repurpose flea market finds. There's nothing junky or throwaway about the ideas in this book.
What a disappointment!.......2002-03-05
I should have checked this out at a bookstore before I ordered it - I saw the 5 stars and went by that.
This book has nothing new to offer. And I do not see the attraction of using a hospital gurney for a bathroom vanity or stacking your towels on a rusty old garden chair. Actually, that is disgusting.
Yes, the photography is wonderful. But I've seen much better information ...
Save your money, or at least check it out a bookstore first.
Very cool, stylish, fun.......2002-03-01
This book was written for me. When the weekend comes, I'm in my car looking for flea markets in our region. The last thing I want is to buy all our furniture and accessories from regular stores. Decorating this way is fun because it gives me a chance to be ME and create a home that isn't some Pottery Barn lookalike. This book is so fresh and current. I love it so I know my friends will. We're all just starting to get settled and buy homes, so this is one of the books that I often give for showers and housewarmings.
A must-have for the flea market devotee.......2001-02-02
I could not put this book down. The first half is devoted to profiles of flea market junkies and how they use their unusual (and some are VERY unusual) finds in their home decor. The second half of the book is the ins and outs of shopping flea markets and what to do with the treasures. One of the best books in this genre.
Book Description
A day at the flea market is even better when eagle-eyed shoppers go equipped with Country Living's expert advice. Here are tried-and-true techniques for selecting from the vast array of items: clues on judging its authenticity, hints on zeroing in on a dealer's real bottom-line price, and even tips on how to get the goods home. And then comes the real fun: absolutely fabulous ideas for decorating with those wonderful finds. See how to highlight one-of-a-kind-pieces, turn them into focal points, create displays, or reinvent the object entirely-such as turning a farm trough into a fruit bowl. You'll be inspired to hunt down that special something-and have the smarts to get it at the best possible price, too.

Flea market decorating at its best............2002-10-24
I buy most of the home decor books that come out and found this book to be one of the best in many years. It is not a how-to book, nor does it claim to be. It is a huge compilation of homes and various styles. Each time I look through it, I find inspiration. The varied homes and styles all lend themslves to my own creativity. The books does highlight various topics, like: McCoy,baskets, linens, ironstone, mercury glass.... I am pretty sure that I have seen all of the photos previously published in Country Living Magazine, but it is nice to have it all compiled into one great creative beautiful book.
decorating with flea market finds.......2002-06-22
I found nothing but nice pictures to view in this book. I do alot of flea market decorating and there was nothing I could use. Ideas are mentioned in very brief text. A nice coffee table book but not an informative decorating source.

Clever ideas and money savers.......2007-01-21
This book has clever suggestions for making your home "a home" without spending a fortune.
Dime Store Decorating.......2003-01-10
This is a book that you check out from the library, not one that you purchase. Everything seemed skimpy to me, from the pictures to the text. Also, beware of another of the author's books, Fabulous Flea Market Finds. The cover is different and it has a different title, but from cover-to-cover it is the exact same book! I had no idea that you could just change the title of a book and sell it.
dime store decorating using flea market finds with style.......2002-06-26
I loved this book! As an accessory designer I thought I had seen just about everything for flea market decorating, but Jill Grover proves me wrong. She has a wonderful, fearless, and imaginative decorating sense which is what decorating is all about. Anyone can this! A++

Beauty Handled Enjoyed Bit Bruised Still Visually Inspiring.......2003-10-25
Vintage fabric, architectural refuse, wood chairs, china, glass, containers, photos frames, metal work, lamps, shells embellish homes' visual universe with color, shape and a sense of human interaction. The background of our lives and human relationships are recorded in the objects we create, handle, use daily. That history charms and warms our homes and Tattered Treasures celebrates the broken pieces for their evocation of people and times past. Full page photos of chips, dings, warped and loved mementos. A book to reminisce by. Enjoy.
Thought Inspiring How To's.......2001-04-05
A wonderful book for everyone who decorates to have on their coffee table. This book features how to display collections, take flea market finds and uses them in an imaginative and creative way. What a wonderful way to decorate using tattered treasures that have the gift of a story with each piece displayed in your home. This author really has tremendous vision in her tattered treasures, whether they are family heirlooms or found at a flea market. This is a must have book!!!

Book Description
This lavishly illustrated book explores the interior decoration of Parisian mansions during the first half of the eighteenth century, the rococo period. Charting the rapid and sometimes dramatic changes in both the style and the imagery of the time, Katie Scott examines the relations between social status and the consumption and display of decoration in the grand houses of the nobility.
Customer Reviews:
Rather heavy on the pedantics, and too light on the aesthetics.......2007-09-24
This book reads like a pedantic Ph.D. dissertation, or rather like three such dissertations sewn together into one bookbinding.
Part I is an economic and technology history of eighteenth-century decorative-arts production. It is an unlikely reason why anyone would purchase this high-gloss, coffee-table-style, oversized book.
Part II is a sociology of the layout and design of the Parisian noble's hôtel. It seems unlikely that these sociological considerations applied exclusively to the rococo period and not also to the ancien régime society of the preceding baroque and succeeding neoclassical styles.
Part III sets forth the historical thesis that political change in the form of the decline of monarchial absolutism reduced the status of the rococo style from noble status to commercially common, and thus brought about its eclipse. I find this an unsatisfactory explanation for the ascendancy of the neoclassical style.
Overall I found the book a disappointment. It shows little appreciation for the aesthetics of the style, which is quite charming. It has remarkably little color photography, and certainly too many black-and-white photos for such a book with a $90 price tag and only 318 pages.
I refer readers interested in a better visual and aesthetic presentation of rococo interiors to Furniture: From Rococo to Art Deco (Evergreen Series). The latter has more than two and a third as many pages, at least a dozen times as many color photos including not just furniture but the room decorations as well, and about a fifth of the price.
