Book Description
A truly comprehensive guide to the very best of British traditional cooking, with over 200 recipes drawn from all over the British Isles.
Book Description
From Arbroath fisherman’s soup and stuffed Hebridean lamb to whiskey and honey ice cream, Scottish cuisine is famed for its honest flavors and the fine quality of its ingredients. In Scots Cooking, author Sue Lawrence has collected 120 of the best recipes from her native land. Using only fresh ingredients, these time-honored recipes have been tested for the modern kitchen and are as delicious today as when they were first created. Introduced with engaging stories about the origins of each dish, and interspersed with Lawrence’s memories of the tastes and flavors of her own Scottish upbringing, each recipe highlights methods and traditions that have been handed down through generations.

Fabulous Food!.......2005-06-08
If you like Scottish food, sweets in particular, this book is for you! We have made virtually all of the baking and sweet recipes in this book, and they are all delicious. Do you like Tiramisu? I did not think anything could top that, but then I tried the recipe in this book for Cranachan -- oh, my! Who'd of thought that cream and raspberries and honey could mix with some other delightful things and be so incredible?
The breakfast pancakes, with lime juice flavored golden syrup as a topping -- amazing! Real maple syrup pales in comparison. And fresh from the oven Baps and eggs for breakfast -- yum!
You'll need to buy some Lyle's Golden Syrup and some Lyle's Black Treacle for most of the baking recipes, but it is SO worth it!
We've only made one meal recipe, to date, which is the Scotch Broth. For soup/stew lovers, this one is a hearty bunch of comfort food. Eaten with some warm, crusty wheat rolls, on a cold winter's evening, you are definitly feeling some endorphins flowing!
Buy the book! :)
Over a hundred of the best traditional Scottish recipes.......2004-04-04
Over a hundred of the best traditional Scottish recipes have been collected for Scots Cooking by Scottish author Sue Lawrence from her home country, and uses the fresh and diverse local ingredients for which Scotland is so famous. Anticipate many dishes holding seafood and meats, and presenting flavor combinations not to be found in other cookbooks; such as the Orkney dish Clapshot.
The Best Scottish Cookery Book.......2001-11-02
Finally a book that successfully combines contemperory with the traditional. The recipes are beautifully presented with spectacular colour photographs. Unlike some cookery writer's books the recipes are usable for every day life covering such topics as breakfast, meats and baking. Being Scottish myself I know that this book genuinely reflects Scottish cooking and I love the way the author combines the recipes with anecdotes making the book not only a good cooking book but also a good read. I would highly suggest that everybody should buy this book as the recipes are the best things that have come out of Scotland since Sean Connery.
Book Description
In her latest book, Sue Lawrence presents a marvelous collection of contemporary Scottish recipes that feature traditional, down-to-earth ingredients. For breakfast, enjoy Smoked Trout Hash or Scrambled Eggs with Smoked Salmon, or for a light meal, Asparagus Tarte Tatin. For a picnic, there's Summer Pea Soup with Mint, Herbed Scotch Eggs, and Whisky-Laced Fruit Cake. And for a Burns Supper, try Barley Risotto with Chanterelles, Venison with Oat and Herb Crust, and Shortbread Ice Cream with Sticky Bananas. Illustrated with gorgeous color photos of the food and the Scottish countryside, this is a treasure trove of all that is good in Scottish cooking.

Little Gem of a cookbook.......2006-02-17
Classics reborn for the modern age, scottish kitchen is filled with wonderful recipies from basic meat and potatos dishes to professional desserts certain to impress your guests.
Scottish kitchen is heavily influenced by English and Irish cooking but the differences (spices mostly) are more local, some of the ingredients i would imagine would be hard to obtain outside britain but those are few and far between. The recipes are clearly written with beautiful pictures to match.
P.S. The shortbread ice cream with bananas mentioned in the publisher's blurb is worth its weight in gold, absolutly delicious.

Fascinating recipes, much in need of an update.......2001-12-29
I thought that many of the recipes were very interesting, including the Scots, Irish and Welsh recipes also included. I would like to try many of them out but find that the book needs some sort of an update. This book was evidently first printed in Britain about 1920, many of the terms would probably be obscure even to a present day British cook, let alone an American. I would also like more specific cooking information, no temperatures are given for anything, bake or boil until done is too vague for me.

Customer Reviews:
Great Book.......2007-01-14
This book was just what I was looking for. It is full of Victorian recipes, but with modern cooking instructions. It gives recipes for many different courses and has some menu ideas, but you can also create your own, of course. It also gives you an idea of what was common for Victorian holiday meals so you can also add your own similar recipes right along with it. It is a really great book. The only downfall is I do wish it had color photos of some (if not all) the recipes. That's just my own preference - I love cookbooks that show what each finished dish looks like. Other than that, it really is a good book if you are interested in cooking up some Victorian meals. I was looking for some new Christmas tradition foods for my family, and this really helped in giving me recipes plus helping in giving me other ideas as well.

Book Description
Providing a source of the best of traditional British cooking, these recipes range from starters to puddings, featuring Medieval Braised Rabbit with Prunes, treats such as Apple Hat and College Pudding, and delicate desserts like Damson Snow and Marbled Rose Cream. Though the emphasis is on the practical, historical background is also included for some of the key dishes within the book—from the first creamy macaroni cheese (first made in England in the 14th century but then not again until the 18th century when it returned from Italy) to 19th-century mulligatawny soup (derived from Southern India). The National Trust has researched the archives to find an authentic but delicious taste of history.

Book Description
This idea-filled resource for quilting designs contains 150 full size patterns of designs including holiday, children's, sports, geometric, miniature, nautical, and traditional. AUTHORBIO: Linda Goodmon Emery began quilting in 1975 and specializes in original design quilts, both full-sized and miniature. She is a National Quilting Association certified Master Quilter, awarded for her quilt, Rosemaling Inspiration. Numerous awards have been given to Linda in the American Quilter's Society shows and other national and local competitions. REVIEW: A reviewer from Denver, CO says, 'I am a machine quilter and very new to the skill. This book has a wonderfully wide array of patterns from easy to advanced. It also has many different sizes as well as the instructions on how to vary the size should you need to. This is not a book of the same old quilting patterns. She breaks down her patterns into chapters based on themes, and she covers it all from mini quilts, to seasonal, or babies, or masculine, or ethnic themes (just to name a few)....'

A Treasury of Quilting Designs.......2004-10-23
i was disappointed with this book...i was hoping for more designs for which i could use continuous line machine quilting...i do, however, think this is a good book for hand quilting designs.
THE MOST CONCISE, WELL-LAID-OUT QUILTING DESIGN BOOK.......2003-09-13
I have ever encountered. A large 14" x 11", which allows for small, large and cornered designs of various categories including borders, backgrounds, traditional, special shapes, designs from different countries, holiday designs, and much more! The designs are printed ON ONE SIDE ONLY which is extremely helpful when one wishes to use a page on a lightbox, as only one design shows through. The spiraled binding is a superb plus since it enables the pages to be laid out separately for scan or lightbox use. So easy to use, scores of designs to choose from, ECONOMICALLY PRICED (so much more for the money than any other book I have researched).....Ms. Emery has done all of the work to make it easy for us. Thank you, Linda Goodmon Emery, for providing a fine product for quilters.
A MUST HAVE book of quilting patterns.......2003-05-06
I am a machine quilter and VERY new to the skill. This book has a wonderfully wide array of patterns from easy to advanced. It also has many different sizes as well as the instructions on how to vary the size should you need to. This is not a book of the same old quilting patterns.!!! She breaks down her patterns into chapters based on themes, and she covers it all from mini quilts, to seasonal, or babies, or masculine, or ethnic themes (just to name a few) Additionally the book is spiral bound, larger than normal size AND the patterns are all only on one side of the page. You can't lose with this book!!
the most quilting designs ever in one book.......2002-09-26
I have never seen so many quilting designs in one book, let alone the fact that they are so beautiful. There are designs for every occasion.I love that this book is spiral bound for tracing or copying. There are even measurements for every design which takes out the guesswork of which designs will fit your paticular space. The borders are exceptional and each has a least one center block design to go with it,some have several. If you only bought one design book this one could be the only one you would ever need.
Quilting designs.......2002-04-17
This is a great book to take you beyond basic quilt designs. All of the borders have the corners drawn out for you, which really makes it easier. The designs are drawn to fit in typical-sized blocks and borders, but I haven't found it quite as useful for whole-cloth quilts. There are lots of patterns for different themes, and I liked the different designs for background and filler quilting. My favorite has to be the birds and worms. I highly recommend this book.

A nice collection of patchwork borders.......2005-08-27
This book contains a collection of patterns for many different borders which would be suitable for use in patchwork quilts. The borders are carefully drawn out and where appropriate the pattern reversal is shown. Additional useful information is provided in the form of the depth of some of the border patterns when drawn at different specific widths per section, which will be helpful when planning your quilt. In addition the template pieces shown for some more elaborate border patterns are drawn in sketch format.
This is a useful volume which will provide a handy reference tool for those wanting to add that special border to their patchwork quilts.
Book Description
In a remote canyon in northern New Mexico the early morning stillness is broken by voices chanting praises to the Lord. And thus begins the daily cycle in the Godcentered life and search of the Benedictine monks at the Monastery of Christ in the Desert.Seeking God is a monastic tapestry. The daily life of the monks is interwoven with the seasonal changes and celebrations and the candid words of the monks as they speak of their life their hopes and doubts their hardships fears and joys their prayer. Weaving this tapestry together are the hauntingly beautiful chants songs of praise and reverence that echo through the darkness before dawn throughout the day through the solemnity of Vespers in the evening and Compline at night. The majestic beauty of the environment captured in every season reflects a peace and tranquility that becomes an integral part of this monastic tapestry. The high red rock walls of the canyon where eagles fly cradle the valley whose stillness is broken only by the flowing waters of the Chama River and the winds that occasionally funnel through. Seeking God presents the ongoing process of the monastic way through the words and activities of these Benedictine monks as they move through the day and through the seasons in their search for God through prayer work study and song.

A Treasury of Amish Quilts.......2000-06-25
This book is a treasure of Amish quilts. It is strictly a picture history of quilts, with a short introduction into the world of the Amish quiltmaker. I have this in my quilt library to sit and simply look at beautiful quilts. I would recommend it as a gift, which is how I received it.

Book Description
Green wood from a newly felled tree is easy to cut, bend, and shape. That is why working with green wood remains a time-honored rural craft for producing rustic-style furniture and other outdoor fixtures. Though there are many carpentry books on the market, few among them focus on this increasingly popular subject. Alan and Gill Bridgewater's brand new title is precisely what green wood carpenters have been looking for. Following a comprehensive introductory section on tools, techniques, and types of wood, the authors present 15 easy-to-follow projects that will result in attractive and useful objects made of green wood. They include a trellis, a garden bench, a rustic slab wood gate, and a backyard pergola, to cite just a few. Directions for all projects are heavily illustrated, and range from "easy" to "ambitious." Many can be completed within a single weekend. Large full-color photos of all finished pieces show do-it-yourselfers what their projects will look like when completed. There are 110 full-color photos in total, plus 60 instructive illustrations.

Definitly worth having.......2007-01-12
It has some great looking projects that you would be proud to display. I plan on making 4 or 5 of the projects in the book. That makes it weel worth it in my opinion. The table on the cover looks like a great project for the intermediate woodworker.

All too often the projects in beginning woodworking books for the novice look uninspiring. This one is different: each of the 12 simple designs retains a professional look. These projects put your router to good use, and they take only a weekend to complete! Using woods such as cherry, beech, and walnut, novices will soon be building an inlaid side table, a coffee table with sliding panels for hidden storage, and an elegant fluted oak table lamp. Customer Reviews:
Projects are demeaning.......2007-08-09
The book is loaded with stupid projects such as a wood pin you attach to your shirt or jacket. The bench on the front of the cover is why I bought the book. I didn't realize the legs were not solid. Also the top is made of slats. Construction methods are shoddy as well.
The rest of the projects are, for example : name plaque, lawn sign, picture frame, candle holder, miniature plant holder, miniature adirondack chair, small tote, decorative wood trinkets. Not to be entirely negative, there is a sofa table (one of those that you put behind the couch), a country harvest table (one of the best projects) and a chair that must have leather cushions the exact size of the chair. This is the first book that I have EVER returned.
