Book Description
Tom Fitzmorris is uniquely qualified to write about the food of New Orleans. Born in the Crescent City on Mardi Gras, he'd never left his favorite town for more than three weeks at a time--that is, until Hurricane Katrina struck and Tom and his family were forced to evacuate.
Prior to the disaster, Tom was just putting the finishing touches on his magnum opus: a collection of recipes for the best of New Orleans food gathered and developed over more than 30 years spent reporting eating in the Big Easy. In addition to his weekly restaurant review column, which has been published continuously for 33 years, Tom is best known for his daily 3-hour radio show, "The Food Show," broadcast every afternoon on WSMB.
With New Orleans Food, Tom presents more than 250 great New Orleans recipes designed for the home cook, all steeped in the Creole and Cajun traditions, yet updated to reflect contemporary tastes and ingredients. From small plates (Shrimp Remoulade with Two Sauces) to main courses (Redfish Herbsaint, Root Beer-Glazed Ham) to desserts and drinks (Bananas Foster, Beignets, and Cafe au Lait), these are dishes both elegant and casual, traditional and evolved. Whether you are nostalgic for the taste of New Orleans or simply love good food, New Orleans Food should find a place on your cookbook shelf. Now every Monday, everywhere, can be red-beans-and-rice day.
A portion of the profits from the sale of this book will benefit New Orleans recovery efforts.

One of the best!.......2007-06-20
I'm a transplanted Louisianan living in the Northeast (though everyone keeps insisting Maryland is the south)! I recently made a couple of recipes from the book for a New Orleans brunch I hosted for some picky eaters (me being one of them). The food was outstanding and the recipes were fairly easy to understand and prepare. Along with my River Road Recipes cookbooks, this one is quickly becoming a favorite.
Great sampler of New Orleans cuisine.......2007-05-07
This is a wonderful cross-section of the cooking of New Orleans. As a native New Orleanian, I can certainly attest to that. The recipes run the full spectrum of easy to hard and a wonderful history of each dish is provided. I made the easy recipe Heavenly Hash and it reminded me of the candy that was sold at DH Holmes department store. The Texans out here ate it up. I also have prepared a roasted asparagus dish that was EASY and FANTASTIC. Something that needs to be mentioned is that Mr. Fitzmorris is a great everyday chef, he has provided many recipes that he has concocted himself. I really enjoyed his Peanut Butter bread recipe. I highly recommend this book to anyone interested in eating GOOD food.
home run.......2007-02-18
Tom Fitzmoris knows his stuff. I've read his columns/blogs/whatever he was writing, since the 1980s. We used to attend (not together) Thursday night wine tastings sponsored by a NOLA shop, and he was always interesting. The only thing I've tried from this book is chicken livers w/ bacon & pepper jelly (p.57). It was just wacky enough to get my attention. And delish! More pages are dog-eared to try once my new kitchen is finished. The book is also a good read for those who like good food. It's like cooking porno.
EASY, SIMPLE, AWESOME.......2007-01-18
THIS WAS MY FIRST ONLINE PURCHASE WITH AMAZON AND IT WAS EASY, SIMPLE AND WAS DELIVERED ON TIME AWESOME. THE BOOK WAS A GREAT GIFT FOR MANY FAMILY MEMBERS WITHIN THE CITY OF NEW ORLEANS. THANKS.
good authentic cookbook.......2007-01-11
Tom Fitzmorris definitely knows New Orleans' food. As a native New Orleanian, I appreciate access to his recipes.
And with a portion of the proceeds going to charity, it helps support our city.
Everything I have made so far has been delicious.
The crab cakes and the jambalaya with oysters are my favorites.

Book Description
A mingling of French, Caribbean, African, Spanish, and Native American influences has created the unique culture of New Orleans, from Mardi Gras to the blues. And like the city itself, the cuisine of New Orleans is an exuberant, creative mix, evoking the legacy of three continents. Step into any Cajun or Creole kitchen and you will experience an extraordinary blend of Old World and New.
In The Best of New Orleans, food expert Brooke Dojny has selected the finest dishes of south Louisiana in their most classic guises. From a base of French culinary principles, enlivened by a dash of American ingenuity, come thick spicy gumbos and jambalayas, barbecued and blackened seafood, fiery andouille sausages, superb Sweet Potato Pie and luscious Bananas Foster. Each recipe includes advice on special cooking techniques, and a glossary describes and defines everything from filÉ powder to cayenne, grillade to courtbouillon. Color photographs of the finished dishes and of New Orleans itself capture the joie de vivre of this most irresistible of cuisines.

Yummy Aphrodisiatic Food.......2005-01-25
The recipes in this book are sumptious and simple at the same time. I believe you will be impressed by the variety and ease of cooking Haitian food. Haitian food is one of my favorite cuisines, with this book it might become yours as well. Another tidbit is if you Google Haitian food and Boston- you will learn all about Haitian food's aphrodisiatic properties!!!
Scrumpdelicious.......2001-03-05
We have tried many of the recipes and found them to be just delicious. The BAKED FISH WITH MORNAY SAUCE is just divine.
Haitian cooking.......2001-02-18
Whether you are a gourmet chef or a beginner,I think you will enjoy cooking with the Mountain Maid Best Made cookbook. The recipes are easy to follow and there are many helpful charts in the back of the book that answer any question you might have. There is also a dictionary that gives you the english, french, and creole word for the foods used in the book. I also found the cooking hints helpful and often refer to it when I am cooking out of a different cookbook. Although some of the recipes call for exotic ingredients that might be hard to locate in your part of the world, you can substitute more available ingredients and still get good results. You will be surprized what grocery stores are stocking these days, avacadoes and plaintains, both common in Haitian cooking, are now readily available. This cookbook makes cooking Haitian food easy and fun! I especially like the Banan Pese and rice and bean recipes. The Banana bread is another favorite! I've given this cookbook to my mother and a few friends and they have also liked it. I would recommend it to anyone who enjoys island cooking!

Customer Reviews:
So-so.......2006-03-15
I found this book disapointing and narrow in scope. It's a book for doll collectors who don't have other interests. There are about a hundred reproductions of photos of children with dolls, from about 1880 to the 1950s, photos reproduced from postcards, greeting cards, visiting cards, etc. The photos are poorly reproduced and poorly arranged on a beige-pink background which does nothing for them and are accompanied by uninformative comments like, "This wistful girl in elaborate costume holds what looks like a German "dolly faced" doll." Many of the photos show children who seem to be related to each other, they have these funny ears that stick out like bugles and one gets the feeling that they are from a single private collection from a region where there are problems of consanguinity. The photos are not in chronological order so you can not use it to see how doll clothing styles changed over time. There doesn't seem to be any order to them at all. There are a few schmaltzy poems and that's about it for text. This book is alright but for the price, could be so much better.
Great for 18th & 19th Century doll & child costumes.......2003-08-21
When I first borrowed this book from the library, I did so because I expected it to be a "browser" book that I'd read once, and then return. As it turned out, I was so enthralled with the variety of illustrated dolls, children, and clothing, that I ended up buying my own copy of the book. Doll restoration and preservation is my avocation, and so the book is an invaluable resource for finding real examples of how the dolls were dressed, and what the children wore. It was refreshing to see such variety, and to see that, then as now, not all dolls were "dressed to the nines." Some were simply dressed by their owners or mothers in sturdy clothes to play with. When faced with the task of replacing a doll dress on an antique doll, I am going to use this book as a reference. For me, the book is a new and valuable resource in my personal library. I don't think it would have been published for the text alone. Most of that fluffy stuff was superfluous, and some of it was just plain drivel.
Sentimental Journey.......2002-05-05
The Cherish Me Always series of 4 books (3 have been published as of Spring 2002) have grown out of the authors' photograph collection. The authors share their collection of photos with the tenderness of one sharing a personal photo album. This volume is 136 pages of beautiful vintage photos with information about the photos and the subjects. Literary quotes and poetry appear occationally to maintain a nostalgic childhood memory. Although this book has a great deal of value in recording dolls and clothing from different decades (before 1950), the biggest asset of this book is its emotional value. The predominantly female subjects hold their dolls tenderly and show them off proudly. It is a sentimental journey into America's past that the reader can easily indulge in.
Cherish Me Always - Fantastic.......2001-12-05
There is nothing like this book on the market today! It is truly an amazing book! It appeals to a large audience of readers. If you love vintage photography, children, history, dolls, or interesting non-fiction books, you must buy this book! You will not be disappointed! The photos are so endearing they will melt your heart. We need more books like this on the market with times the way they are! I hope you enjoy reading it also.

Important Scholarship on African-American Folklore.......2001-10-23
John Vlach's book is one of the most important contributions to the study of African-American folklore. Prior to Vlach's study, there had been well-documented and interesting studies of folklore within African-American communities. But Vlach's work is the first thorough study of material folk culture that any folklore researcher had completed on African-American folk culture. It's an in-depth and interesting study, and Vlach paved the way for additional research, some of which offers perspectives and interpretations that critique Vlach's findings. The book is essential reading for anyone interested in black history and culture, and it is filled with excellent documentation and intriguing insights that set the stage a range of important issues that are worth further examination.
interesting book.......2000-02-22
i was only vaguely familiar with the subject of african american decorative arts before reading this book a number of years ago. i have since become very familiar with the material, not only as a reader, but as a collector as well. i continue to go back to this book often. it is very informative, and very detailed. it is a must for anyone interested in the decorative arts. two other books i can recommend are signs and symbols: african american quilts by maude s.wahlman, and especially souls grown deep: african american vernacular art of the south, volume one (tinwood books, 2000) by multiple authors. the latter book is, i believe, an essential reader and study guide for anyone interested in art.
Product Description
24 pages. This handbook summarizes the catalog by John Vlach, guest curator and serves as an informal guide to the exhibition, which explored the survival of African elements or traditions and their continuing influences in the crafts of the Afro-American artisans. Lovely, Natural Christmas Decorations.......2004-11-22
I've used this book over and over to decorate my home at Christmas with Southern style arrangements. Demonstrating these techniques for garden clubs and at libraries, I always found a ready audience for this and it was really easy. I learned it all from this book.
The supplies are easy to gather (pinecones, apples, oranges, holly, greenery, wire, ribbon, etc.). The results are spectacular. Your arrangements will look very professional!
Each page shows four or more drawings showing the steps for attaching the pieces to make a different decoration. It shows various wreaths, table decorations, swags, roping, corner accents for doors, mantel decorations and an herb kissing ball.
If you ever visited Williamsburg at Christmas, you will want to recreate these beautiful arrangements in your home. This website gives you an idea of the variety you can create:

Excellent presentation and accompanying text........1999-07-23
I have seen this book at the publisher's and it is outstanding. The photographs are exceptional and the descriptions well composed and pertinent. You have, however, left out the name of the CO-AUTHOR, Mary Miley Theobald. I hope you will correct this as both professionals worked long and hard to assemble the edition.
