5 out of 5 stars Every recipe a winner.......2003-08-29

I have purchased and given as gifts over a dozen copies of this book. My husband purchased it as a present in 1987. Getting one of these books from me is a family "welcoming" tradition. There is not one recipe that hasn't been great. I had to retire my first book as it was spattered with "ingredents".

I am writing this review as this wonderful book, with many subsequent printings, did not have one review. Grab up the remaining copies and give as Christmas presents to all the cooks in the family.

4 out of 5 stars Excellent customizing guide--though text requires patience.......2005-07-13

I reluctantly gave this book 4 stars because of the English translation. Want to turn your GI Joe into a museum piece? The Fort Lewis (Washington state) Military Museum has many 12-inch figures on display to represent soldiers of different eras. "Second World War And 12-Inch Action Figures" is a how-to guide on turning 1:6th-scale action figures from Dragon, 21st Century, and Blue Box Toys into museum minatures. I have a minor complaint about the American soldier shown on pages 64 and 65--the sling on his M1903 Springfield rifle is attached to the stacking swivel instead of the forward sling swivel. I can't gripe much--the original GI Joe made the same mistake with the M1 rifle! Another minor glich is calling a 75mm recoiless rifle (page 4) a 57mm recoiless rifle. Even so, the advice on modelling tools and techniques and the photos and descriptions of the finished figures made for an entertaining read. I may even be able to use some of these techniques.

5 out of 5 stars Rag Rug Handbook.......2007-06-26

I love this book because it's hard to remember all the steps to weaving when it takes so long to accomplish any project, and this book has all the stuff I need. It's a resource for my "library" for frequent reference.

5 out of 5 stars Rag Rug Handbook.......2007-02-14

A great source of information. Thank you for the speedy service.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent book for beginners.......2006-11-28

This book was great for us as beginner weavers. A loom was given to us - all in pieces. By remembering his grandmother's loom and with the pictures in this book, my husband assembled the loom and is now weaving his second rug. This book has lots of information and pictures and is an excellent guide for us "beginner weavers".

5 out of 5 stars Rag Rug Handbook: Revised Edition by Janet Meany et al.......2004-07-06

This book is an ABSOLUTE MUST for a rag rug weaver. It is the best book I've found yet that describes not only the art of weaving rag rugs but also tries to give an historical account of looms that were made. I used this book as a reference when I bought an used loom. Since the labeling was missing on the loom, the previous owner could not identify what kind of loom she was selling. I was able to not only identify the loom, but I knew from this book that the type of loom I bought was appropriate for rag rug weaving. If you want to learn rag rug weaving, this is the book to get!

5 out of 5 stars Excellent for beginner to advanced!.......2002-04-24

Paula and Janet did well with this book. I am a novice rug weaver and found the directions to be easy to follow and the results pleasing. Definitely buy this book if you're looking for something on weaving rag rugs!

This is a book for those that don't want to have a rabbitry. It is designed for the person who wishes to raise just one rabbit as a pet and as a wool source. Comprehesive and well written, it includes sections on how to grade, harvest and use your fiber.

This book is absolutely outstanding for the serious spinner and for those who raise angora rabbits for their wool. There is much information I was unable to find anywhere else.

I checked this out of the library 5 times before I finally bought it. It's very informative for anyone interested in raising and spinning the four breeds of angora rabbit.

      Book Description

Yarn is the basic unit of textile construction and every fabric, except felt, is made with it. The properties of yarn-its ply, tensile strength, weight, elasticity, and resistance to heat, water, and shrinkage-are what give each yarn its unique characteristics. By manipulating these properties, an astonishing array of fabric types can be produced, creating any number of textures and appearances.

By focusing on these varieties, Penny Walsh is able to closely examine the composition and construction of different yarns and explore their many uses. She examines the techniques of spinning and the mechanisms used to create yarn. Color illustrations accompany the text, demonstrating the appearances of different yarns. There is also practical instruction on making your own threads and yarns. The Yarn Book is written for the serious student and the professional textile artist, and will be useful for spinners and weavers. It is a complete guide to understanding, designing, and using yarn.

Penny Walsh has taught at Chelsea College of Art and Goldsmiths and exhibits at the Chelsea Craft Fair in London.

5 out of 5 stars A Great Book - But, Not For Beginner's..........2001-11-06

This is a great intermediate to advanced weaver's book. Although in the back she does cover straight and basic plaiting techniques, this book is for basket weaver's who are serious about their art and want to add color and/or artistic designs into their baskets. Not only does it teach you how to incorporate geometric designs in your work, it also teaches you how to draft your own artwork designs. The book covers twill weave, how to wrap your weavers, materials used, adding color and weaver tension. Also included is design weaving: basic blocks and diamond patterns as well as variations on the two; creating folded baskets, undulating twills and double weaving. You'll learn how to incorporate many different lines (such as a swirl pattern) and other fun shapes. Learn color techniques and how to correctly match multiple colors in one piece. Plus, learn how to read draft plans, build complex twills, and how to draft your own designs. Very easy to read and understand. Loads of wonderful color pictures as well as black and white draft plans to help you get started. A metric conversion chart and basket supply sources are included. 144 pages (hardback edition).

4 out of 5 stars Very Good First Reference Book.......2003-12-10

This book is not a "How To", except for perhaps the floor loom sampler. I agree with the comment that the history is the best part, and I thoroughly enjoyed it. I also enjoyed the explanations of fibers and yarns. It reads like a college text and has been used as a college text. This book is very good for a broad introduction to weaving and some other related fiber arts.

        1 out of 5 stars Don't waste your money!.......2000-05-31

Don't waste your money on this "handbook". There aremany better books on weaving. This book reads like a collegeinstruction manual for students who will never continue on in weaving. The historical section is the best part of the book. Following the simple historical info section are completely pathetic section on card weaving, inkle weaving and loom weaving. ( ) this book is way way way overpriced! Maybe if it was offered (it for less money) I might purchase it again as a very simple reference manual but I would have some doubts at that! END

4 out of 5 stars An excellent college textbook.......1998-11-04

This book is the standard college textbook at the two universities where I studied weaving, and includes historical information, practical instruction, and design information. The practical instruction assumes you have a floor loom. Recommended.

1 out of 5 stars Not for the inexperienced weaver.......2004-05-05

I was thoroughly disappointed in this book as it does not include basic draft information for the weave structures. Neither the "flap" information or descriptions of the book indicate that this is an advanced book and not a "how to" book of weave structures and drafts. Perhaps later on I will understand how to derive construction information from weave structure. When that happens this book may be useful. Until then it is of limited to no use since it does not include basic (threading, tie-up, treading) draft information for the journeyman or inexperienced weaver.

5 out of 5 stars Handbook of Weaves.......2000-06-16

A must have book for anyone who wishes to extend his basic knowledge of weaves.

            Book Description

Louis XIV, regency, rococo, neoclassical, empire, art nouveau, and historicist pastiche: furniture styles march across French history as regimes rise and fall. In this extraordinary social history, Leora Auslander explores the changing meaning of furniture from the mid-seventeenth to the early twentieth century, revealing how the aesthetics of everyday life were as integral to political events as to economic and social transformations. Enriched by Auslander's experience as a cabinetmaker, this work demonstrates how furniture served to represent and even generate its makers' and consumers' identities.

            Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Excellent and deep.......2003-02-01

Collectors of European furniture are advised to read this book to understand how French styles were produced over a long period of time and how to tell real 18th century Louis XVI from 19th century reproductions. The French social history of furniture manufacture and consumerism in this book is quite amazing and readable. I strongly advise the book for dealers, collectors, decorators and collectors.
