Book Description
Thomas Jefferson's little granddaughter, Virginia Randolph carefully copied the recipes he brought back from France, as well as his favorites from Monticello and the White House.
The result was Jefferson's personal one-of-a-kind cookbook. It was handed down for generations from mother to daughter as a priceless possession. In the late 1930s, Fanny M. Burke
great-great granddaughter of Jefferson
presented the book to the Thomas Jefferson Memorial Foundation shortly before her death. Ms. Burke joined with the Foundation in giving noted historian, Marie Kimball permission to prepare it for publication.
Mrs. Kimball fully adapted Thomas Jefferson's Cook Book to practical, modern use. All the recipes were proportioned to our current practice of a formula for serving six people. Each recipe was tested. It is not only correct, but tastes great!

ALL BLUE RIDGE COLLECTORS NEED ALL BLUE RIDGE BOOKS .......2006-02-08
TO IDENTIFY YOUR PLATES BY NAME, YOU MUST HAVE THIS BOOK. EACH BOOK HAS NEW LISTINGS FOR NAMED PATTERNS THAT HAVE BEEN FOUND.
MINE IS SIGNED BY BOTH FRANCES AND JOHN RUFFIN AND NUMBERED.
I MET THE RUFFINS IN ATLANTA AT A SHOW AND ENJOYED VISITING WITH JOHN. I AM SELLING MY BOOKS ON BLUE RIDGE AS I AM DISPERSING MY COLLECTION.
Avid blue ridge collector!.......2000-10-24
I have to disagree with the above review. I found the review to be totally incorrect and unfair. Blue Ridge China Today" is both a beautiful and informative book. What a great introduction to Blue Ridge! My wife and I have been collecting for many years and have been looking for such a complete guide to assist us in our Blue Ridge purchases. The authors are to be commended for their relevant and insightful descriptions of confusing patterns. We found the pictures, descriptions and prices to be very clear; easy on the eye and easy to understand! This book has been very helpful to us in helping us to build our own beautiful and valuable Blue Ridge Collection! In addition, it has encouraged our children to start their own collections! Bravo John and Frances! Well done! When are you going to send us more?
Not recommended!.......2000-04-02
I waited with anticipation for the delivery of this most recent Blue Ridge book. I was terribly disappointed.....extremely unprofessional in its overall organization, layout and quality of photos. Some pictured items have values beneath, some do not. Some are not even identified. If you were looking to identify something specific, you would nearly have to look through the whole book...I have to say that it seems more like a personal photo album with collectors holding up their prized pieces, than it seems like a guide. There is a price guide in the back that seems adequate...but if you don't know what the items look like, you're out of luck...as there are no pictures with that. I have the Blue Ridge Encyclopedia from 1989 and find that book infinitely more professional and useful despite the fact that its price list is out of date and collectors have changed some of their interests. This book truly is more like a photo album...it shows curio cabinets full of Blue Ridge pieces, often with just one or two pieces in the whole cabinet identified....if you can even see them well enough to make an identification. Often a caption asks one to "note" the presence of a certain item, but does nothing to help a newbie understand the importance of that piece! I can't imagine what the publishers were thinking. If you are a versed Blue Ridge collector, you might enjoy these snapshots and tours through collectors' display shelves...but if you are a beginner, I recommend you start with a Blue Ridge book by different authors. After reading through this book one time, I thought "Well, I don't know any more about Blue Ridge than when I started."

Quilting Masterclass.......2005-07-04
The book was not exactly what I thought it was. Could have been more instructive.
A smorgasbord of beautiful quilts.......2002-01-13
I bought this book as my husband's birthday gift to me based on the Amazon.com reviews, and have not been disappointed! Some of these quilts make my mouth fall open at the skill and time it took to make them. What vision! What fabulous ideas! This one book alone could inspire a quilter to sew for the rest of her life.
Although not a how-to book per se, some of the most interesting techniques are explained in adequate detail to replicate. The quilts have been divided into sections called Traditional and Beyond, Illusion: Two Dimensions into Three, Pictorial and Story, Contemporary Abstract, and Textured and Embellished. I admired quilts in every section, but my particular favorites are Open Gate (a reverse applique of black fabric gate over a watercolor garden that is 5 X 7 feet), Glass Carafes (I've always loved watercolor paintings of glass items, but it never occurred to me to attempt something so delicate and luminous in fabric), The Greek Quilt (the earth-toned applique reminded me of the painting on a tribal piece of pottery), and Quilt for a Hot Night (five brightly colored strips of piece work connected by narrow cloth strips reminescent of bead weaving and Africa).
An incredible book for any quilter, and great fun to share. This is the type of book I like to show people who are unfamiliar with quilting and ask them to pick out their favorites. My family had fun doing this when we got together Christmas Eve (fun to do with strangers, too!)
Recommended by the accidental quilter.......2001-12-15
I keep this book by my bedside so I can look at the quilts before sleep. Fifty memorable quilts with discussion on inspiration and technique. This collection has quilts that could propell you toward a lifetime of quilting. Every quilter represented is not only an exceptional fiber artist, but she/he knows how to tell a story. (something that is often missing in the quilts of many traditional quilters.) There are many European quilters represented whose work I had never seen before in other collections.
The color plates are lovely and the slightly oversized volume allows the gazer to take in the small details often missed in smaller photos.
My favorite quilts are: Mom's Bread by Sandy Bonsib. (If you are interested in photo transfer quilting--she offers a wonderful example of how it can be used to tell a quilt story instead of being a collage of unrelated photographs.),My Heart's Delight by Mary Mayne. (I keep seeing this quilt in my dreams as a red and white quilt combined with redwork.), Bristol Stars by Judy Mathieson. (I made one Mariner's Compass block and I can't even imagine making a whole quilt of them--let alone in a circular arrangement--but I love to gaze at this color plate because it is
so wonderful to behold.) Also wonderful to behold are: Ginkgo Biloba by Ruth B. McDowell, Umbrella Thorn Tree by Maurine Nobel,
and The Greek Quilt by Sheena Norquay.(Study this quilt if you are interested in designing any type of quilt based on American Indian pottery or early cave drawings.)
Pushing the envelope - right off the table!.......2001-05-27
It was pretty hard to read this book since I kept drooling all over the pages. Guerrier has gathered 50 contemporary quilts and their makers. We get a close look, not only at each quilt, but at the reasons why the quilt was made, and some insights into the process. This is not a how-to book. There are no projects with complete directions. Many of the artists do share individual tricks and techniques, some with step by step directions and photos. The quilters were chosen from all over the globe, giving us a chance to expand our horizons culturally as well. One of the best things about the biographies in the back is that they include contact information for each artist. If you are moving away from totally traditional quilting, you will put this book on top of your must-have list.
A Caffine Boost of Inspiration........2001-04-25
I recived this book as a Christmas present and wonder how Christmas dinner got cooked! The examples of quilts examined and explained are very wide, from twists on a basic nine patch to contempory "wall art". I live in Trinidad so have no chance to drop into a quiltshop or guild to strech my ideas - this book really shows you a lot of possibilities as the quilters explain where they got their inspiration for their work. It has really encouraged me to strech my design process. I would recommend it to the beginner who wants to see that quilting isn't only Sunbonnet Sue and to the established quilter who wants to strech her/his work.
It is still my favororite bedtime read! (Written in May)

Great Book.......2007-04-30
This book is great! I purchased it because I mainly wanted an easy way to make hobbled roman shades. I found articles on the net that tell you how to make roman shades but I did not feel that they explained the process well enough. So after purchasing this book Windows with Style: Do-it-yourself window treatments, I made the roman shades for my daughters bedroom, living room, and bathroom. It was easy. The calculations were easy to figure out. Every thing will come out right if you can use a ruler and do simple math. The projects can be done with a variety of fabrics. The alternative window projects like the shoji window screen and the hanging window planter are great too. I made the shoji window screen for my zen-themed bedroom and the hanging window planter for my kitchen. This gave me a convenient place to put my herb garden. Although many of the other projects in this book are of no use to me because they are not my style, I feel that I did get what I wanted and more from this book. Five Stars!
Excellent Window Treatment Resource.......2007-04-11
Very good resource for just about any kind of window decor you could possibly want.
Short Only On Instructions.......2006-11-25
I got four books in an effort to teach myself to properly sew drapes and curtains. This particular book was a learning experience in that I don't think that a window treatment could possibly exist that isn't included in here.
This book taught me what everything is called, generally how it's put together, what types of window treatments are best for certain areas, like small windows, or dormers. It was extremely interesting and educational.
I have to say upfront that if you are new to sewing, you will get lost fast in this book. I would say it is good for the intermediate or expert seamstress. There are beautiful color photos of each project, but there are little steps omitted, so it is not a 1-2-3 type of book. However, if you are already a fairly good sewer, you should have no problem with it.
I was impressed by the number of shades, roman, roller, and such that are included in this book. There is also a section on frosting glass and making Shoji screens. There just doesn't seem to be anything left out concerning the windows.
Overall, this book is very worthwhile for the learning experience. And I look forward to using it to make some shades when I am done with my drapes!
A great book for beginners.......2006-02-13
Having bought a new home in the fall, I was desperate for custom window treatment ideas and not interested in the local store offerings. Not having sewn for 25 years, I was cautious about getting in "over my head." This how-to book was full of "doable" ideas. I created shades for a guest bath and two bedrooms and am now working on the master bedroom. My ultimate goal is a newly constructed sunroom and even though the book doesn't seem to contain exactly what I am looking for, it provided me with great practice projects and something to show for it.
outdated.......2002-03-13
The ideas in this book are almost laughable. The projects that are shown wouldn't even look good with different fabrics. If you are into lots of ruffles and pouffy things everywhere, then this is for you. If you are into simpler window treatments with exquisite fabrics that complement a room, this isn't for you.

Excellent book, great visuals.......2000-12-25
I saw this book at a friend's house. It is loaded with good photos and lots of detailed instructions for making a wide variety of window treatments. The styles illustrated aren't "far out" or strange, but not too staid either. I really liked this book, enough to make a note of it to buy or borrow once I got home. I now see from Amazon.com that a newer edition (Oct. 2000) has been published, so I'm definitely going to buy the newer one. I recommend this book and therefore also the as-yet-unseen newer edition.
