The Great Book of Guns: An Illustrated History of Military, Sporting, and Antique Firearms.......2007-01-18
This book was a gift for Christmas for my grandson. He said he likes it very much. He called me in Arizona to thank me for it, I figure it is what he wanted. I guess it's fine. As long as he's happy, that's all I care.
Wonderful photos, but not much else.......2006-03-03
The photos are great! There was little information to really tell about each gun pictured.
Great Book of Guns, Indeed!.......2006-01-13
This book looks sweet on our coffee table. The pictures are beautiful- especially the ones of antique rifles. My knowledge of firearms has greatly increased just by reading it in my spare time. There is fascinating history about guns that I had never heard of previously. I like the way the book is organized by firearm type and country of origin. I'm truly glad I purchased this book.
Interesting Historical Review but lacking modern details.......2004-11-23
I have been learning a lot about modern handguns, and I wanted a book that would give me some history of guns, how their operation has evolved, and an overview of the types of handguns in existance. This book is definitely interesting and fun to flip through, and has some great photos. I liked the photos of the older flint-lock pistols, pepperbox revolvers, and guns of the old-west. Some of the oddities were especially interesting, including the Japanese sword-gun (not a bayonet, but a full-size sword with a handle that was a gun). Also, I liked the WWII Liberator, made by GM to be cheap, easy to build, and to dropped in mass on Germany for partisans to get. However, I felt the book was lacking in a few key areas. I understand that the author can't possibly include every gun ever. But why are there so many examples of home-made guns throughout the years, and no entry for the Glock? The Glock was a revolutionary gun, with an interesting history of unknown Gaston Glock with no gunmaking experience making a gun for the Austrian army that bucked much conventional thinking regarding guns. Who would think a plastic frame would make a reliable gun? Now, every gun store you go into is packed with Glocks, and it is the favorite sidearm of many LEOs including police and FBI. Most CCW books I read recommend the Glock. Half the new guns I see today are essentially Glock copies (Springfield XD, Steyr, S&W SW, etc). The only mention of the Glock in this book is in a side-panel about SWAT teams, where it mentions that SWAT teams use Glocks among other weapons.
This book was an interesting read, but I wonder what criteria the author picked for each gun he included. I would have also liked more diagrams, showing how each gun works and the progression of various styles of gun. I give the book 4 stars since it was fun to flip through, and makes a good coffee table book, but for serious study of firearm history, you might need to go elsewhere.

General info.......2007-10-03
This book does a really good job at being a GENERAL reference guide. A buyer will likely be a bit disappointed if the purchase of this book is being considered for a specific information. For example: You could not help buying a surplus nagant revolver or mauser 71/84. Now you're wanting to get Info on cooking up some Ammo. You'll not find any helpful data or deminsional drawings (except for very common cartridges) You'll get a bit of (not entirely unbiased) history that you already knew, a little load/ballistic data that you'd be better going to a loading manual for.
The organization is in such a manner that is difficult to find a certain cartridge. In fact, I would say that it's been over organized to the point that complication smites simplicity.. On the plus; I've never not found a round that I was looking for after some searching.
If you'll be doing a lot of work around ammunition This is a good buy, as general and random as it is, that you'll be cracking open again and again.
I purchased this book in conjunction with another book, not knowing wich would better suit my needs. If I had to choose I'd keep the other, "The Handloader's Manual of Cartridge Conversions" Check the reviews to help in making a selection if you havn't already.
cartridges of the world.......2007-10-01
Great book full of information on calibers unknown to many of those who love to shoot.Good price. Shipped and received quickly.
Cartridge book.......2007-08-26
This is the best book on cartridges I have ever read and I have read 100s of books on cartridges.
A Beginner's Reloading Guide.......2007-04-10
This review of commercially-manufactured cartridges will teach you about the history of firearms and introduce you to some unusual types.
Decent reference work.......2007-03-13
This book is a generally decent review of most of the commercially manufactured cartridges of the world, plus good sections on obsolete, military and wildcat cartridges. It's a good first resource for finding basic information about specific cartridges and serves as a starting point for further research.
The wildcat section is interesting and has tidbits about some of the most unusual cartridges but there was a total lack of discussion of the plethora of 20 caliber wildcats available. No mention was made of the 20 Tactical or 20 Vartarg, or several other fairly popular 20 caliber wildcats. Yet four major bullet manufacturers make a range of bullet sizes in this dimension and several quasi-custom rifle makers chamber rifles in these calibers. I found this annoying that while considerable space was "wasted" on 10 to 14 caliber cartridges, which virtually no one except a few individuals make bullets or arms for, no space was allocated to the 20 calibers which are rapidly gaining popularity. It's a pretty large oversight.

Steve covers the world of good guns, from American classic shotguns to the English and Spanish gun makers. He discusses damascus barrels, how to buy a customized gun, how to buy an affordable double for $3,500 or under, big bore rifles, Gun-Trader Blues, and much more. This is Bodio at his finest, the unleashed, unfettered gun fanatic, haunting the gun shops, evaluating, and offering a unique insight into the world of sporting firearms. 181 pages.
Book Description
Focuses on the vintage era from the 1920s through the 1940s. Over 450 color photos. Main sections include woods, irons, putters, adjustable clubs, fancy club faces, wedges and utility irons, shafts and grips comparisons, grading and condition scales, 2001 values, and a glossary. Manufacturers represented include Allied, MacGregor, Wilson, Spalding, and McGill.2001 values. AUTHORBIO: Ronald John served six years in the U.S. Air Force and earning doctorate and post doctorate degrees in special education and clinical psychology. His passion for sports has been rechanneled since 1996 because of back fusion surgery and firm doctor's orders into studying the history of golf and golfing equipment and collecting post-WWI clubs. REVIEW: This book helps fill a large gap in understanding a great era of golf, 1919 to 1942, the period of change from the hickory or wooden shaft to steel and innovations in production and designs by great designers - many of who not only designed clubs but are amongst the greatest golfers ever. The book introduces the metal and pyratone covered metal shafted clubs of 1919 - 1942 and the slow retreat until 1932 when very few clubs were made with hickory shaft.

For Winchester interests beyond firearms.......2002-04-19
If there is an interest in all manner of Winchester products, "Standard Catalog of Winchester" is an okay black and white price catalog of all sorts of items sold under the Winchester name. Even if you are not a Winchester collector, the contents are interesting to thumb through.
The firearms section is approximately 120 pages, which are virtually the same Winchester pages that appear in other Krause Publications such as "The Standard Catalog of Firearms" and "Fladerman's...", only expanded though the use of larger versions of the same pictures and illustrations. I only mention this duplication of content because, if you already have any of these other Krause publications, this book does not offer expanded or new information relating to firearms.
Standard Catalog of Winchester.......2002-02-27
An excelent book for any Winchester fan! I found stuff I had no idea Winchester had manufactured. Highly Recomended.

Splendid overview of this trade.......2003-09-18
This is the companion catalog to an important and long awaited exhibit of some of the most exquisite firearms ever made in modern times, which was held at the Minneapolis Institute of Arts. The photography is stunning, the biographical and technical texts written by Wallace Gusler and Mark Silver are excellent and highly instructive, and the entire spectrum of decorated firearms is ably represented.
Firearms enthusiasts of every inclination will find something in here that will make them mute with wonder. Anyone with the least interest in fine firearms as an art form will be very sorry indeed if he doesn't pick up a copy of this (probably soon to be scarce) volume. It belongs alongside Wilson's "Steel Canvas", and is really in some ways a more important work, marking one of the very few times that professional fine arts academia has shown a serious interest in firearms as other than oddities to be explained away politically, or shunned outright. The incredible beauty and artistic sophistication in evidence here make it plain that these firearms, and hundreds like them not available for this publication, deserve a place on the front rank of any of the decorative art forms man has produced.
Not to be overlooked is the touching and entirely appropriate homage to John Bivins, who can rightly claim to have been one of perhaps five or six souls who diligently resurrected the craft of the American longrifle when it was on the very brink of extinction in the early 1960's. "First among equals", John's legacy will live forever and this book is a fitting testament to his contribution.
Highly recommended.

Good Beginner Book.......2001-10-02
This a good book to have on hand for the absolute begginner, but those with even the slightest bit of experience may find the book repetitive. Many of the "tips" are more common sense than anything else. Good as as a supplement to a more complete sewing book (e.g. The Complete Idiots guide to sewing), but not on its own.
This book is an excellent place for the beginner to start........2000-05-24
This is the book contains all the information you need to operate your sewing machine. It helps you along with step by step photos. Includes clothes for beginners to sew. This book is very easy to follow. A definate must for the beginner in sewing.

Customer Reviews:
Positively Terrific !.......2007-10-16
Positively Crochet!is a wonderful book. There is such a wide variety of crochet patterns and definitely has something for every one. I love the Soft Capelets pattern and the fact it comes in different sizes. The jewelry patterns are a very nice surprise and I love the purse key chain. I plan to make several of those for Christmas gifts along with a couple of the scarf patterns and the Patchwork Purse. The Helpful Hints on the side of the page is a great idea. I would recommend Positively Crochet! to anyone who wants a well written pattern book with a large selection of patterns for all skill levels.
Positively Crochet is GREAT.......2007-10-16
I am constantly oohing an ahhing over these crochet patterns, and I look forward to making as many of them as I can. Mary Jane Hall is now my number one favorite crochet pattern designer!
Eh........2007-10-11
I was really excited to get this book from looking at the cover. However, I'm somewhat disappointed in the types of patterns that it has available; most items are accessories, and the wearables are okay... just not my style. If you love accessories of any kind, then you will like this book, if not... you will share my opinion.
Positively Crochet, Mary Jane Hall.......2007-09-27
Positively Crochet! Our bookshelves have long awaited current, stylish crochet pattern books. Not only does this collection meet the demands, it goes even further with Mary Jane's well written patterns, shaping tips and solid suggestions for the beginner as well as advanced crocheter. Packed with many months worth of projects I am excited to add this to my home library and look forward to starting many of the designs. Deborah Spigner
What a Marvelous Book!.......2007-09-22
I love it! Lots of patterns to choose from, a wide variety of sizes, and projects that even appeal to my 13-year-old Gothling, with appropriate color changes, of course. Most pattern books contain between 10 and 25 patterns; this one has a full 50 to choose from, as well as words of encouragement on every page. The patterns range from simple to more complex but well explained; it's a book you can grow with if you are a beginner. A more advanced crochet artist might gravitate to the more complex patterns, but the wide selection means there's a choice of a quick, simple project for a weekend in addition to fashion tops. I highly recommend it to any crocheter.
Another reviewer said to avoid the book if you didn't like to see the word "God;" I'm not a Christian but found the word non-specific enough not to ruffle my feathers -- and I have practice at feather ruffling! I like the positive quotes. It keeps the book upbeat and dynamic.
