WHO AMONG US DOESN'T LOVE A STIR FRY?.......2001-12-28
In this day and age with so much to do and so little time left to spare, who does not love a good stir fry? A well-prepared stir fry is quick, easy to prepare, nutritious and tasty. Chicken, beef, fish, entirely veggie - the choice is yours. With a little creativity and by varying the ingredients, one can have a whole new meal; the variations are endless. One originally associated the wok with strictly Chinese cooking, and this book quickly enlightens us on that thought. If you think one stir fry is the same as the next, wait until you read this book; it is one I would not want to be without. It is truly a cook's best friend. The recipes are quite different and each one I have tried has been absolutely flavourful and delicious. This book is a "must-have" for anyone who does not have the time, energy or desire to spend hours slaving over a hot stove!

I've made about half the recipes in this cookbook so far and I highly recommend it!! Some favorites: Kung Pao Chicken, Chicken Fajitas, Lamb with Eggplant and Green Onions, Beef Asparagus and Red Bell Peppers, Shrimp with Leeks and Toasted Pine Nuts, Pasta Primavera, Ants on a Tree, Shrimp and Pork Chow Mein. Can't wait to discover the rest of this cookbook!
Quick and yummy!.......2000-03-30
Many people think that they can just chop up some veggies and meat, add soy sauce, and have a great meal...not true. This book gives you the details you need (such as, once you add the meat, stir every 20 seconds so it will brown properly) to create restaurant-quality stir-fry. And the All-Purpose Stir-Fry Sauce recipe in the beginning is really excellent, although I like to add cornstarch & extra water to mine to make a thicker sauce. I have not tried any of the non-Asian inspired dishes, and frankly think that they should not have been included, but all of the ones I have tried (Orange-Chili Beef, Beef Asparagus & Red Pepper, Minced Chicken in Lettuce Cups, Kung Pao Chicken--my husband's new favorite for dinner guests, Snapper with Tangarine-Chili sauce, Ants on a Hill, Quick Pot Stickers--a little tricky until you get used to the folding) have all been very good and have been made more than once.

I have purchased this book a few years ago after a few not too successful attempts at oriental-style cooking.
The book is wonderful in the fact that it covers techniques, gives tips and explains main details of stir-fry and wok cooking for people who are not necessarily great chefs and/or have not learned oriental cooking in their mother's kitchen. It is also important that it gives recipes from all over the Orient, and does not concentrate on just one cuisine, allowing for variety that was very enticing to me, as a beginner home chef at the time.
The recipes are wonderful, easy to prepare, and very satisfying to both, eyes and palate. The dishes lend themselves to presentation at casual dinners or luncheons with friends, or an intimate dinner with a significant other (cooking these together is a lot of fun!). The book is written for the average person, and does not contain strange uneplained terminology or unexplained names of styles that confounded the younger me in many more "serious" cookbooks.
I would definitely recommend this to anyone who would like to learn the basics (and more!) of oriental cooking without specializing into one cuisine. If you are already a pro, this book can still provide plenty of ideas and inspiration.
A Flash of Delight In its Own Right.......2001-02-13
This is my most favorite stir-fry cookbook. I love the way this book is organized. It is wonderful to have the introduction chapter address equipment, fresh produce, herbs and spices, flavoring ingredients, and techniques for preparation and frying. The step by step food preparation guides are helpful and the color photographs are beautiful. This presentation makes it easier for anyone who may be new to wok cooking and helpful for long-timers. There is a beautiful full-colored photograph for each dish. If you love stir fry recipes and wok cooking that has a strong essence of imagination, great taste, a sundry of uses (casual and for company) this is a "must have" for your collection. Offers lots of recipes with ingredients and spices the novice in Asian cuisine never felt tempted to try. This book introduces techniques and ingredients in recipes. It entices you to try at home what you did not want to ask in a restaurant, the 'How did you do THAT?'. The recipes range from quick starters (Salmon in Teriaky, 3 minutes) to full blown menus that may take up to an hour of your time and needs to be prepared a day in advance. My mother loved it at first sight and even more after a thorough review. Now I am trying to get a copy, because I gave her mine and she is asking for four other copies, because her guests want copies, too.

A Good Starter book, but average recipes.......2003-05-22
Sam Choy is famous for his spectacular Hawaiian cuisine. I own almost every book he's written. However, not all books are equal. This is a bound manual, a spiral notebook slightly larger than a paperback. It is on thick stock, and can stand up to some cooking stains, which is good.
The first section deals with ingrediants, substitutions, the correct type of wok, how to use oil, and what tools are necessary to cook. For a beginner in the world of Wokking, this is a wonderful primer.
But the recipes, and there are a lot of them, are standard fair. If you want to know how to make simple stir fry dishes you could get at your local chinese restaurant, or at a barbeque, then this book is great. But there is not a lot of creativity in dishes, this is a catalog of the standards, not an unusual cookbook with anything really unique, other than Sam's direct and easy to follow approach.
If you are new to stir-fry, I highly recommend it, if you have done some stir fry before, try another cookbook.

This is a great idea & source book for anyone involved in commercial design. Creative lighting solutions from a variety of applications are presented, showcasing both the decorative fixtures and technical lighting considerations.
There are 35 case studies, each with 2-4 pages of outstanding photos and descriptions of the lighting systems used. These are broken into categories including restaurants, entertainment spaces, public spaces and shopping areas.
Most examples employ one of a kind custom designed lighting elements. How these were conceived & integrated into the overall design is described. Many beautiful fixtures, unique in form and function, are shown in the detailed photos.
Finally some spectacular designs in lamps, wall & ceiling fixtures using varied and unusual materials are shown. Contact info. is provided for the architects, designers, manufacturers and photographers featured in the book.

poor pictures.......2000-07-08
Sitting in a bar you can always feel the charm of the lights. Great lighting makes bars especially vivid. Light design is the key point for bars designs. I am disappointed when I got this book. Pictures of bars in this book are unattractive. Because of the ordinary pictures, lightings here have no charm at all. I bought two other books about light Light Style and The Art of Illumination. I think these two books are more helpful with better pictures and more descriptions.
