Book Description

Next year will mark the 75th anniversary of America's most legendary highway, Route 66. This 2,400-mile stretch of interstate runs across eight states and straight through the American psyche. John Steinbeck, Woody Guthrie, and carloads of nuclear families from the 1920s to the 1960s threaded their way through the heartland, and the unique restaurants that blossomed along Route 66 are justly celebrated. There are other successful road guides, but Marian Clark's The Route 66 Cookbook is the only culinary guide to what Steinbeck dubbed "The Mother Road." It includes over 250 delicious, time-tested recipes from places like the U Drop Inn, the Covered Wagon Trading Post, the Pig Hip, and the Bungalow Inn. It is also a nostalgic recreation of the Route 66 of the past, with stories from the waitresses and cooks who poured the coffee and baked the pie. With 105 b&w illustrations--as well as a new 16-page color section--this is a gem of Americana, and a treasury of comforting dishes from a time when the flavors along the road changed as dramatically as the landscape and accents as you sped across the heartland.

5 out of 5 stars Real road food, tasty, cookable; sometimes even nutritious.......2003-09-15

Where else can you learn how they made those cinnamon rolls, chicken-fried steak, greasy hamburgers, chili and chocolate pie? This book is history! And there real jewels, too -- roast duck, chicken and shrimp curry -- that are delicious and easy. This is a useful, real cookbook full of wonderful road stories. A wonderful book!

5 out of 5 stars The Route 66 Cookbook.......2001-12-08

The book has a great new introduction with additional stories and recipes. Makes for memorable reading about cafes, diners and other eateries that were once on the road and others that are on 66 today. Recipes work!

5 out of 5 stars A great trip down memory lane with all the trimmings.......2001-11-27

I originally bought the first edition of this fantastic book and had to buy the deluxe update as well. This book is truly fantastic. I spent a good part of last summer driving from Los Angeles to Missouri on old route 66 and this book was a welcome friend along the way (how many people plan trips with cookbooks in hand, I have no idea).

From the standpoint of the trip it was great to be able to find some of the same restaurants that my parents ate at 30+ years ago. The book is also full of menus, pictures and stories - and it's the stories that set the book apart. The stories about the restaurants and people along the way made the entire trip seem like visiting old friends.

The recipes are also second to none. I've tried over two dozen of the recipes and none have disapointed me so far. All of them are simple, tasty and relatively simple to make. You can't go wrong by using these recipes.

Finally, I love the changes from Chicago to Los Angeles in terms of the regional recipes offered. I've long been a fan of American regional cooking and this book, while not a "regional cookbook", shows a flair for the subtle changes in restaurant fare as you travel the mother road.

5 out of 5 stars The Route 66 Cookbook, Anniversary Edition.......2001-03-13

Every Route 66 traveler has memories - this book delighted me with stories of places I have stopped, dishes from the 50s, and great memories from waitresses, owners, customers, and home-town folks who talked about Route 66 eateries that are gone as well as food stops still open today. The recipes are reminiscent of the 50s although some come from the whole 66 era. Every time I drive the road there are changes. The author points this out and some of the people she interviewed are now deceased - but I'm glad their memories were saved - bet they were glad to reminisce. I found the book a delight! Glad Clark is a fellow Oklahoman.

3 out of 5 stars To me, a disappointment........2001-01-03

I began this book reading it as though it were a novel--devouring every word. I have driven Route 66 some, have several books about it, and enjoy the lore and history. And I love reading about food of all kinds, as well as cooking. Marian Clark has certainly done a lot of research and included many interesting anecdotes, but I sometimes had the impression that some could have been fleshed out a little more, to advantage. A number of interesting-sounding people and places got only a sentence or two. By the half-way mark in the book, I was convinced that travelers had better be prepared to subsist on chili, pie, salad dressings, and barbecue sauces, if this is a representative cross section of what's available along the Mother Road. Recipes for these seem to make up close to half of the offerings. And by then I was merely scanning the pages.

Michael Wallis's introduction is touching and lyrically written, and a sheer pleasure to read. I'd like to have seen recipes for more of the gustatory delights that he recalls so vividly, but alas, nary an omelette, nor a single biscuit and gravy. 'WAY more than enough gooey desserts for the overweight, glucose-intolerant traveler, though.

The color photos that fill sixteen pages of this Deluxe 75th Anniversary Edition seem to be only of snapshot quality, pretty amateurish, and in my opinion the book deserves better. Some are obviously reproductions of old photos, and can't be helped. The others, though...

So, am I sorry I bought this book? Am I glad to have it in my library? No, and yes. But I'm still disappointed. There are better books on Route 66 out there, and better books on comfort food, though perhaps none that present the two together as this one does. But I have a feeling I'll be referring to those other works more often in the future than I do this one.

Customer Reviews:

1 out of 5 stars Don't waste your money.......2006-09-02

This has to be the worst price guide I have ever seen. Forget about the values not even being close, the Ertl listing has so many errors its pathetic. Several of the cars listed are 1/43, Not 1/18, and are listed as 1/18, colors listed that were never made it goes on and on.

Sorry but it just don't cut it.

2 out of 5 stars Standard guide to 1:18 Scale die-cast cars.......2004-02-25

After waiting for more than 9 months to get this book I was very disappointed after using Cast-car publication by Dan Boyd. The descriptions were very short and in most cases uninformative. I looked up 20 cars immediately from Ertl, Exact detail for Lane, Carousel, and Burago and Supercars (NO AutoArt) only to find 6 out of 20 and these are older than 2001 and could not be found. Very disappointing. All models did not have photos as Cast-Car Publications and the descriptions and details are sketchy or non existent, which is one of the values of the Cast-Car Publication. It does have more 1:18 scale models than any other Manual at this time and the $ VALUES that were assigned I found to be from a little low to extremely low even for an eBay auction. Some of the values assigned to very limited edition cars that even by todays standards are rare or hard to find are lower than what they sold new for and are bringing more than the values given to them in this publication. For example 1969 Grumpy's Toy Camaro SSC, 1969 Yenko Nova #1 Issue, Yenko Camaros #'s 1 & #2 are all listed at a ridiculous $60.00, the GMP Grumpys Toy Nova is also listed at $60.00, and Lanes 1967 Grumpy's Toy is listed as a $60.00 value. I WOULD BUY ANY OF THESE AT THE VALUE STATED IN THIS GUIDE AS MANY AS I COULD GET MY HANDS ON AND MAKE GREAT MARK-UP. WHERE DID THEY GET THESE VALUES??? These are only a few of the many glaring errors I found in an initial 30 minute review. Except for photos in the guide I found it exteremely lacking in why I made the purchase. I'm patiently waiting for the next issue of Cast-car which will include many more manufacturers than just Ertl.

    5 out of 5 stars Tradition.......2007-02-20

I loved this book for it's absolute tradition. This will show people tradition is still very much alive and kicking. Very handy tip's easy to use and doing the arrangements looks easy and won't put you off.

3 out of 5 stars Complete Book of Wedding Flowers:Stunning Flower Arranging.........2003-02-13

I found that this book was not detailed enough for beginners in terms of creating the arrangements. It focused more on the wedding day rather than the actual flower arrangements. I was looking for more of a step-by-step guide for arranging wedding flowers.

4 out of 5 stars Great book with lots of ideas.......2002-03-01

This is a cute book with lots of ideas. Doesn't have a lot of "how-to's", but does have some. Great pictures. I use this as a book for "brides-to-be". Someone always chooses something from this book.

    5 out of 5 stars It's the little details.......2001-08-31

I enjoyed this book because of the ideas it presented for the little details ... suggestions for floral arrangements that were dramatic, beautiful, and unique. It gave examples of floral arrangements for everything from baptismal fonts to tents. I was inspired to think beyond the standard altar pieces and table decorations.
While many of the actual examples were a little heavy for my taste, I found them to really demonstrate how powerful flowers and greenery - beyond the white roses and baby's breath - can be, and how carefully chosen floral arrangements can compliment any decor and create ambiance. I recommend that anyone needing to choose flowers for a wedding - or really, any occasion - at least take a look at this book for inspiration, even if one isn't going to actually arrange one's own flowers.

5 out of 5 stars Great source of experienced advice and aesthetic inspiration.......2000-08-02

I am thoroughly enjoying Shirley Monckton's book, which I happily discovered on returning from an "early honeymoon" in England, in which my fiance and I explored wonderful Gothic cathedrals and appealing parish churches. Yes, Ms. Monckton is writing for an English audience and her lovely decorations are suited more for the churches and manor houses in her country, but she has a great sense of design and lots of detailed advice for the rest of us, too. Being "florally-challenged," I greatly appreciate Ms. Monckton's experienced guidance on things I would never have considered, such as determining what the rules are in decorating a particular church or hall and who enforces them, how to keep a vertical arrangement from looking like a Christmas tree, how to prevent plastic in a basket arrangement from reflecting sunlight or camera flashes in your wedding pictures, and how long to condition flowers before arranging them (two hours to overnight . . . not the two minutes I would've allowed). Shirley emphasizes planning ahead and informs the reader which things can and cannot be completed until the Big Day. She kindly nudges the bride to delegate the last-minute work to the florist or talented friends/family members. Of the three wedding flower books I've read in recent weeks, Shirley Monckton's is definitely the best.

Lavishly illustrated throughout. The Book of Fresh Flowers highlights the glorious abundance and diversity of plant materials available -- whether store-bought or homegrown -- in an extensive, season-by-season photographic guide to the flowers and foliage that lend themselves well to use in arrangements. Using some of the plant materials illustrated, Malcolm Hillier reveals the widely differing styles of arrangement that can be employed during every season and emphasizes the importance of following nature and developing your own flair when displaying flowers.

For everyone, from the gardener who grows and picks flowers for the home to the expert creating arrangements for a wedding. The Book of Fresh Flowers will prove an invaluable sourcebook of practical advice and inspirational design ideas.

Malcolm Hillier, coauthor of the best-selling Book of Dried Flowers and author of Arranging Dried Flowers, has long had an obsession with gardens and flowers. In 1970, together with Colin Hilton, he started a garden design practice in London and later a retail flower shop, both of which enjoy an international reputation. He has created both fresh and dried flower arrangements in a highly distinctive style and has designed conservatories for interior designers, films, television, and private clients.

    Customer Reviews:

    2 out of 5 stars Fuzzy Flowers.......2001-07-27

The title of this book should be "Fuzzy Flowers". I have never been so disappointed in receiving a flower arranging book!

Most of the color photographs of arrangements are taken in some kind of 'fog'. If this is done for some kind of artistic reason, one or two would be okay but to show almost every arrangement as though in a cloud of dust or out of focus is just unecessary. The arrangements themselves seem to be quite good if one could only discern their placement and color of flowers.

From a technical point of view, the text is useful and covers all one would need to know as a flower arranger.

I would not recommend this book to my friends and will give this one to my Garden Club.

    5 out of 5 stars Good reference.......2000-03-22

Malcolm Hiller's book is an excellent resource for floral design. The pictures are great! There are flower and foliage guides by season which are very helpful when selecting flowers for big events. Mr. Hiller's arrangements are also very different and inspiring.

The front of the book has pages of dried flower bunches grouped by color and the arrangements shown within the books pages all revolve around keeping within certain colors and color schemes to be used at particular times of the year or for certain occasions. Details a variety of different styles of arrangements and discusses texture and style. Photos are used to show arrangements for inspiration for your own ideas there are no detailed instructions to make particular items. There is some detailed information about making flower swags and ropes not found in a lot of books. I would not say this a book for a beginner it might be a bit intimidating but it's a great companion book anyone who wants to be creative.

5 out of 5 stars Dried Flower Growing, Harvesting, and Arranging Made Easy.......2001-07-28

This book makes you want to run right out and cut a bundle of something to dry so you can make something gorgeous right away.

The fact that this book was first published in 1987 and is still being printed is testimony to the valuable information and beautiful photos contained inside.

When the two authors first penned this book, they had already been in the dried flower business for 17 years. Their expertise and understanding of their craft shows in every word they write.

Chapters include instructions for growing the plants, viewing what the plants look like when dried, choosing your wreath bases or making your own, constructing wreaths, hangings, bouquets, swags, and choosing containers for table arrangements.

One of the best features of this book is the chart at the back of the book that lists a hundred or more plants, their botanic names, which season to harvest the flowers or leaves and which drying method is the preferred for that plant.

There is a short reference to potpourri with several recipes, as well as a couple of pages on pressing flowers.

The section on Seasons and Special Occasions covers, not only the obligatory Thanksgiving and Christmas holidays, but gives innovative ideas for weddings.

It is wonderful that the authors actually grow much of what they dry and that they air dry most of what they pick.

Every page has a tip or set of instructions to make your arrangements with dried flowers both successful and fun.

        5 out of 5 stars A Classic.......2001-01-19

I purchased this book 12 years ago when I developed an interest in making arrangements from dried flowers. Since then I have bought many more books on the topic and have made hundreds of arrangements, simple to elaborate. This is still my favorite book, and I refer to it often. Despite the fact that it was published in 1987, it is not dated. The section identifying dried flowers is comprehensive and well organized, as is the chapter on choosing containers. The instructions for making arrangements, wreaths, swags and specialty pieces are thorough and easy to follow. The floral arrangements are truly inspiring. The concepts are easily adaptable to silk, paper and fresh flowers.

I received this as a gift, and I'm glad I wasn't the one who paid money for it. It's nothing more than a catalog of one company's products.
