Customer Reviews:
Only 1 star because this book has not picture or drawings.......2007-01-08
I find it totally horrific and absurd and scandalous that the this book for "idiots" has in its first chapter a long and difficult to read section on what kinds of glasses to use for drinks that is entirely verbal without any pictures or diagrams or drawings whatsoever. This is so mind numbingly brain dead that I find it difficult to believe any publisher could be this incompetent as to allow this book to be printed at all. There is some very good information in this book in other chapters where a purely verbal description is sufficient, but the lack of pictures in the difficult to understand chapter on what types of glasses to purchase is unforgivable.

If you want a feel for bigtime tailgating try "A Tailgater's Guide To SEC Football" by Chris Warner. It rocks! (only if you love the SEC like I do!)
personas.......2003-09-17
As far as the writing goes, I am not in the position to judge, as is (mrs?) Maya Blend Champion. I was responding to the persona of poor Peurto Rican Jew, and the pain that a parent must feel to find tha he/she has been written out of the family history in favor of an adopted identity. It made me think of Mary Austin, the subject of my own published writing, and how she reconciled with her mother only shortly before her death, then went on to spend the rest of her life as a self-styled desert woman who continued to try to work out her issues with her mother in her writing.
BBQing, A Way of Life.......2003-09-01
Dave Blend is a master writer. Funny, side-splitting and a hell of a guy, Dave makes me want to pack it up and move back home to Texas with his savory words about yummy BBQ! I can tell you that his book has also pleased many Alabamians. They take their tailgating mighty seriously down there, and his book has entertained my family and their friends. He has successfully pulled together the South and the Lone Star State into BBQ solidarity. We need to all go in on an RV, grab a little Salt Lick sauce, and watch some football. Thanks for this tome to BBQ and inspiring me to watch more Crimson Tide (and of course my Longhorns). If one can get me to watch football and like it... then that ONE is a great writer who should be showered with publishers, wanting all his novels.

As Tad Gage explains, everyone starts out in life as a cigar idiot. But not everyone need remain so. His extremely portable introduction to the cigar-smoking life invites one to experiment with and enjoy the pleasures of cigars, while providing the knowledge wherewithal to do so. He teaches cigar terminology and cigar lingo, so you too can talk with confidence about bands, bales, binders, and bunchers, cutters, cohibas, and cigarillos. He tells you how to get started, what brands to try, and what you might expect to pay. He introduces cigar paraphernalia, and explains which items you need and what can be substituted for them in the meantime. Gage describes the process of cigar making, gives the lowdown on humidors, vaults, and aging (of cigars, that is), then gets into cigar rating, detailing the main criteria and jargon of taste, appearance, and draw, then scoring and grading various smokes and brands, with separate chapters for price categories. Book Description
Inspired by the past, Lesley Wilkins illustrates her techniques with a whole host of wonderful designs - flowers, plants, birds, animals and figures. She covers everything - from what materials to use and working with a chart, to getting started and how to stitch. Patterns are created by small stitched units which are combined in many different ways - some heavily textured, some delicate and light. Borders can be built up by repeating and joining motifs Clear step-by-step photographs accompany the author's comprehensive instructions, and the motifs, borders, fill-in patterns and images are all charted, with inspirational pictures of embroideries showing how to build up finished designs.
Customer Reviews:
Not a beginner's book for blackwork.......2007-03-15
While the motifs are interesting and the sampler illustrations so clear a chart is not necessary, this is NOT a beginner's book. It only illustrates three simple stitches the running stitch, back stitch and cross stitch. The first two stitches are illustrated using the simplest technique of a straight line. If you find a pattern in the book with only straight lines, let me know. It does not explain how to map out the running stitch (the original blackwork) nor how to make the pattern reversible on the back side. Most of the patterns are complicated and I presume use the back stitch which is not nearly as neat. I also presume the patterns are not intended to be reversible and so no discussion references this technique. There are no charts which illustrate to a beginner how to stitch along the pattern making the back side as neat and tidy as possible. While I love the book for its authenic flavor in patterns, I am very disappointed in the lack of any explanation how to work truly reversible blackwork using the running stitch.
Excellent on-going reference.......2007-02-19
The clear instructions and stitch pictures are great for those who are beginning blackwork, but this book is an excellent reference for keeping. It will take a lot of stitching to grow out of all the fillings, borders and motifs included.
My one SMALL complaint is that I didn't really like the worked samples presented and most of the motifs were very traditional. I would have like some more that had a modern feel.
All in all a book well worth having on your bookshelf.
Ditto.......2006-06-16
I agree with all the glowing comments of previous reviewers. This is my new favorite book; this is the first review I've ever written, so you know I feel strongly about this! Favorite features: straightforward presentation of info, extremely clear pictures. I'm off to buy her other book ("Traditional Blackwork Samplers") right now.
The best book I own.......2006-01-17
I have not let go of this book since I purchased it one week ago. Lesley Wilkins makes learning blackwork simple and addictive!
Not only are these patterns simple, to do great looking blackwork, you only need counted cloth ($2.00 for a good amount at any craft shop) and black thread ($0.25 a skien).
She presents the basic stitches, tips on framing, etc. -- you will learn the whole process.
I have never even done much sewing at all and I am already making beautiful things. What's more, she opens to door and points you to other resources. I have found vast amounts of patterns and historical info on the Internet and I can hardly wait to try sewing them all.
A Great Introductory Book to Blackwork!.......2005-03-01
I've just started doing a blackwork project, because I found a free chart on the Classic Stitches (based in Scotland) website, and now I'm hooked. The author did a very good job on presenting different fill-in stitches, borders, and motifs. I did not like the finished pieces he used as examples as well as finished pieces that I've seen in other books, but there are so many motifs to choose from that you could easily create your own samplers. The examples he used of finished pieces are so clear, that you can see the little blocks in the material. You could work right off from the example without even needing a corresponding chart to go with it. It is an excellent introductory book, and I will use it for years to come.
Book Description
Rich, comprehensive treatment of an age-old craft includes fascinating history of the beautiful and distinctive art of blackwork, plus detailed discussions of technique and design. Clear, concise descriptions of stitches and equipment—needles, ground fabric, embroidery thread, and more—followed by suggestions for innovative patterns, many accompanied by close-up sketches of designs.

Excellant History / background........2007-05-09
Excellant book for gaining Historical information about Blackwork (not just patterns). Well written & interesting to read. Recommend to anyone wanting to know the background of the technique.
Great Book.......2005-09-23
As a historical reenactor I enjoyed this book quite a bit. It's full of pictures of period portraits with lovely black work designs.
Good Research, OK patterns.......2005-08-22
This book has a lot more information on blackwork than I was expecting, so as a researcher, I find it very useful. On the other hand the patterns contained therein, are not as many as I wanted, most of them I had seen comparable ones before.
A good reference.......2003-03-20
Many dim and fuzzy pictures, but a lovely historical needleworkers reference. Worth having in your library, and a good inspirational boost. I wouldn't consider it a pleasure read, or a quality how-to, but something in between, and wothwhile nonetheless.

Customer Reviews:
Not really worth the price..........2007-05-26
I bought this because of the rave reviews, but for the price of the book, I found it lacking. Being only 64 pages long, I was really hoping it would be jam-packed full of blackwork designs. One reviewer states that this book was very helpful because it discusses how to create your own patterns. Well, the discussion is really 1 sentence where the author says she collects patterns of Tudor gardens and knotwork to inspire her. Well, that's great, but the process isn't explained even a little.
The first half of this book is dedicated to describing blackwork, materials used, how to read charts, etc, with very big, pretty pictures taking up a lot of room. I would expect something like this in the first book, but considering this is the second book on this topic from this author, I expected this space to be utilized with the content I'm after - namely blackwork samplers. Had it been titled "Beginner's Blackwork" or something similar, I wouldn't be complaining (or have bought it).
As for the charts, they are divided into 3 sections, Flowers & plants; Figures, Birds & Animals; and Alphabets. The flowers & Plants consist of 7 samplers that I find to be the absolute best in the book. The samples are full and interesting, with a very geometric, well balance appeal. Figures, Bird's & Animals has 6 samplers and they look just plain dumb. The blackwork looks awkward, like line drawings a child makes. The figures of people look like monkeys to me.I'm not sure if this is how these figures were stitched in olden times or if the author isn't very good at drawing figures. I don't really care, it was a waste of paper.
The last section consists of 6 alphabets, 1 large on it's own sampler, and 5 smaller, single line alphabets. I find alphabets to be another waste of space since there are so many available for free and are easy to create, but just about every book insists on having at least one. The alphabets included are boring and plain. The first is large with adornments all around the letters. It has potential & could have been a nice alphabet, except that the adornments look thrust upon the letters without thought of actually using the alphabet for anything other than initials.
As for the charts themselves, they are very nicely done, large and easy to read. The stitch examples themselves are superb with excellent photos, so much so that you could almost stitch the examples right from the picture.
Overall, this is a pretty little book, with nice clear pictures and well done charts. I would even venture to say that it would make a nice beginner's book for an adventuresome soul. But if you are looking for samplers without a lot of fluff, don't waste your money. Unless it comes down in price to about $6 I think you'd be better off searching the internet for patterns.
Great Designs.......2006-03-09
I bought this because Lesley's book "Beginner's Guide to Blackwork" was so wonderful. And this book did not disappoint, either--more great designs, and a wonderful resource for anyone interested in blackwork, or Holbein, or antique needlework techniques in general.
An excellent resource.......2006-02-23
I started doing blackwork because of this author's previous blackwork book. That one left me wanting more, and I'm glad Lesley obliged! Excellent photos of completed work face a crisp grid with the pattern on it. I especially like how she discussed how to get ideas to create your own patterns (e.g., she explains how she got some ideas from the layout of formal English gardens!). I highly recommend this book.
Book Description
The Anchor Embroidery Series offers the perfect introduction to popular embroidery techniques.
Blackwork is a counted thread embroidery technique in which repetitive patterns are used to fill outlined areas. This book covers the materials and equipment needed, the essential stitches, and outlines in step-by-step detail the working of 49 infill patterns. It is sure to become an indispensable reference for stitchers.
Blackwork was originally so called because black thread was most often used on white fabrics, but many of the 16 original charted designs provided show how this technique can just as effectively be worked with colored threads on colored fabrics. The beautiful designs include ringing Christmas bells, a charming country cottage, delicate florals and an exotic oriental fan and kimono. There are also ideas for how the delightful designs can be used to create a selection of small projects.
Book Description
Modern version of traditional craft; materials, techniques, patterns, projects. 320 illustrations.
Customer Reviews:
Excellent and informative.......2007-05-31
If you are looking for an easy. step by step. graphed out pattern book, this isn't it. The author has a unique approach to pattern design. Using newsprint of different light and dark patterns she maps out the pattern then shows the finished product. This is an art book of blackwork.
I tried it out because of the low price but I am bragging to my friends because it is the freshest approach to pattern design I have seen in years!
Kudos to Elizabeth Geddes!!
Blackwork Embroidery by Geddes & McNeill.......2003-03-24
I must admit I was hoping for more from this book but was rather disappointed with it. There is a short section on the history of blackwork that makes some assumptions about historic pieces without explaining why the author believes it and in some cases seems to be contradicted by other writers on the topic. The author also makes a strange statement about it 'being wrong' to do the historic styles of blackwork as that society (Tudor through Stuart eras, I presume) no longer exists. There is a brief bibliography at the end of the chapter -- which seems a rather odd place for it.
The fillwork patterns are not charted and look to be be hand-drawn. Not very well either! Uneven and since this is counted thread work, they'd be difficult to use. There is no documentation for the sources of the patterns either.
The thing that I find the biggest waste in the book is the author's nearly twenty pages of 'rough sketches' of designs for pieces that may or may not be included and even if they are, it's certainly nothing I'd want to do.
historical review.......2000-07-21
Geddes writes a consise overview of the history of Blackwork that is easy to read and digest. She references many authors, paintings, and such; but there is NO bibliography. patterns are included, but are NOT referenced, so they cannot be used as documentation on a reproduction. Excellent B&W reproductions of famous 16c. paintings.
Book Description
Since the 16th century, the small Spanish village of Lagartera has been famous for its exquisite embroidery. Here, available outside of Spain for the first time, are instructions for more than 50 projects using Lagartera techniques and other Spanish stitches. Among the projects are samplers, scissor fobs, a table runner, and more, as well as decorative edging and borders. Projects are rated for beginner, intermediate, and expert skill levels.
Customer Reviews:
I finally got my hands on this book!.......2002-04-28
I've seen many books (hardcover) on blackwork, but none like this one! All patterns are large enough to read without having to enlarge them. Also included are projects to stitch your blackwork on! Most blackwork books are mostly on it's history and very little usable patterns.
Opps! No, sorry, its not for sale!
Book Description
Blackwork is a classic 16th-century embroidery technique in which stunning monochrome designs are created by embroidering a large variety of counted-thread geometric patterns in black thread. This book covers everything from creating a design to choice of fabric, threads, and stitches, with many stitch diagrams and suggested patterns. A host of beautiful blackwork pictures, both traditional and modern, will inspire any enthusiast, and there are even ideas for working with colored threads. From timeless charm of Elizabethan embroidery to the bold chiaroscuro of contemporary work, blackwork's entrancing intricacy never ceases to appeal.
Customer Reviews:
Blackwork by Lesley Barnett.......2000-06-29
I ADORE blackwork embroidery and was really anxious to get this book! Have to confess to being a tad disappointed though. If like me, you have absolutely no imagination and rely on the brilliance of others to produce graphs and charts, then this book isn't for you. However, the book is beautifully printed, very well written with an excellent overview of the history of Blackwork and contains easy to read and understand chapters on Materials, Equipment and Stitches.
The book does include photographs of some stunning blackwork embroidery, but there aren't any charts for the less gifted such as myself,(!) to work from although with the aid of a magnifier, it would be possible to use the photos instead of charts.
This is an 'inspirational' book and would be great for the experienced embroiderer who can look at a leaf, a photograph or an interesting geometric design and turn it into a needleworked piece. For the 'imaginatively challenged' among us,and newcomers to Blackwork Embroidery, this book is great to own and would grace any needlworker's library, but not overly useful.
