5 out of 5 stars the first moroccan cookbook with the bread recipe I was looking for.......2007-07-31

After falling in love with Moroccan food over 20 years ago, I've been scouring Moroccan and other african cookbooks for the bread that is served in Moroccan restaurants. I was halfway thinking that the bread I enjoyed so much wasn't really Moroccan, but really a Los Angeles hybrid. Well, after visiting Tanger and Casablanca, I found that bread I loved everywhere!!! Well, at long last, I've got the recipe! thank you Rebekah Hassan!!!

Product Description

Great cooking begins with a passion for great food! This cookbook is a "romance" novel for those who are passionate about the food they serve to those they love. The meals are not complicated; however, the majority are somewhat exotic, flavorful, and delicious. The recipes are derived from the award-winning author's eclectic background in French, Moroccan, Italian, and Spanish cuisines. Each of the 200 recipes is preceded by a short history or story of the recipe which entices the reader even further. Examples of recipes include: paté mousse with bacon, potato enchiladas with chipolte cream sauce, lamb tangine with prunes and almonds, pork tenderloin with rosemary cream sauce, cinnamon bread custard pudding, and three layer lemon pie, just to name a few. The book includes recipes for appetizers, beverages, soups, salads, meats, poultry, seafood, breads, rolls, pies, pastries, desserts, cakes and cookies. It also includes helpful hints, cooking tips, nutritional information, and much more. My Favorite Cookbook is small and spiral bound, therefore, following recipes is convenient and simple. It is beautifully designed & illustrated and includes washable covers and section dividers.

5 out of 5 stars The only cook book you need.......2006-11-04

I use this cook book all the time and it is my favorite. Pair it with "My Favorite Cook Book Too" and your family and friends will think you went to culinary school. All the receipes are easy to make and great tasting!

5 out of 5 stars Ditto, My favorite Cookbook Too! .......2006-08-16

By far one of the best cookbooks I have ever used. My dinner guests think I'm a star when I use it. I know the author, have been privileged to take cooking lessons from her. She is talented, a great conversationalist and wonderful teacher. The recipes are some of the best recipes I have ever tried from the first course down to the dessert. Easy, yet elegant when you need elegance and homey when you need comfort food. And you don't have to go to a specialty store to find the ingredients. It's a gotta have, and don't forget her second cookbook, "My Favorite Cookbook Too".

5 out of 5 stars This really IS my favorite cookbook!.......2006-08-09

I have a shelf full of cookbooks but this really IS my favorite one!! It is loaded with wonderful but easy recipes that actually "turn out" right (on the first try). And the recipes are not for the same old boring things but contain interesting and unique combinations of ingredients that are just delicious! (My Favorite Cookbood Too is also great!)

5 out of 5 stars Loved this cookbook!.......2006-08-09

This is a "must have" in the kitchen! I love all the old world recipes. Many of the dishes are simple to make, but taste like you've slaved for hours. The author personalizes each recipe with a story about it, which makes the dishes even more interesting.

5 out of 5 stars EXCELLENT Continental recipes!.......2006-08-04

If you enjoy French, Italian, Spanish and Moroccan cuisine, then you will LOVE this cookbook! The recipes are easy to follow and you can find the ingredients at your local supermarket. It's definitely MY favorite cookbook!
p.s. I also bought her other book, "My Favorite Cookbook, Too". I think this sequel is just as good as the first.

3 out of 5 stars Interesting stories, not always exciting recipes.......2004-12-10

Day's book was originally published in 1975. My copy cost me $3.95 new. At the time, it was one of the few books, perhaps the only book, on the topic that was readily available. It was great to have and to use.

Day tells interesting stories of her experiences in Morocco, and her recipes aren't bad. But there are now far better and more complete books on the subject, such as Paula Wolfert's "Couscous and other good food from Morocco" and several books by Kitty Morse.

If you are a completist, i'm sure you will find something intriguing in Day's book, as i do. If you are new to Moroccan food, or you only want one good book on Moroccan food, try Wolfert or Morse.

5 out of 5 stars LOVE this cookbook.......2007-05-22

I bought this book because I'm a huge fan of the movie, but it turns out the recipes rock! Several of the salad recipes have become my stand-bys -- things I make all the time, especially for other people. I'm so happy to have found this book.

5 out of 5 stars the recipes are really good.......2005-08-24

The book has a slightly frivolous premise, and the trivia are amusing, but the best part is the recipes. I have had many successes and no failures from the this book. The only caveat is that I think there are better recipes for (salty) preserved lemons in some of the other more comprehensive Moroccan cookbooks.

3 out of 5 stars A cute gift for Casablanca fans.......2001-05-27

Okay, lets face it--you're probably not going to buy this just for the recipes. But if you have someone who's both a cook and an old movie fan, they'll appreciate this.

Roasted meats seasoned with precious saffron underlaid with the pungent notes of cumin, cinnamon, and turmeric. Marinated fish snuggled in a bed of almonds, pickled lemon, and couscous. Simultaneously sweet and piquant salads. Delicate and sugary pastries flavored with fragrant orange-blossom water, dripping with honey, and served with a fresh rinse of mint tea. What more proof could there be that food for the body should be food for the soul? Small wonder that the worshippers of sensual culinary delights have anointed Momo one of the most successful new restaurants in recent years for vibrantly conjuring up the atmosphere of a North African souk in the heart of London.

The Momo Cookbook is much more than a recipe collection. Prose portraits of the land of the Maghreb (Morocco, Tunisia, and Algeria) connect its rich history to the development of a distinctive cuisine that, over the centuries, has been influenced by Jewish, Arabic, Italian, and Spanish cultures. Stunning location photographs bring the colorful landscape, its traditions and people, to life.

But the meat of the book is, of course, the food. The 90 recipes open a door to North Africa, and fortunately the ingredients do not cost the price of a return flight: lots of vegetables, fruits, cereals, meats, fish, and poultry that, with the artful use of spices, herbs, and fragrant waters, are transformed into marvels. Momo himself offers traditional recipes (such as mechouia, a roasted-pepper and tomato salad; harira, a rich, thick soup made with cereal; and briouats, stuffed and fried pastry parcels) as well as modern dishes created in the restaurant (such as Fillet of John Dory, with aubergine confit and polenta; dried fruit salad with aromatic spices; and boureks of crispy vegetables) that can easily be prepared in a home kitchen. Although some of the more exotic ingredients such as orange-blossom water may need searching out if you don't live in a large multicultural city, the book includes helpful and surprisingly easy methods for making such ingredients as pickled lemons and almond milk, as well as a full glossary and meal plans. A doorway to a land where sugar and salt, spice and honey coexist happily will always serve up pleasure, whether on the coffee table or the kitchen counter. --Fiona Buckland

    Book Description

Among the many new restaurants of recent years, Momo is quite simply unique. Mourad Mazouz (otherwise known as Momo) has drawn upon his Algerian background and his extensive knowledge of North African food and culture to create an extraordinary place -- a little fragment of a North African souk dropped into central London.

Now Mourad Mazouz has applied his talents and experience to producing an equally inventive and original cookbook. His ambition is to open a door to North Africa, to introduce readers to its cuisine and customs.

Cooking in North Africa is an art beyond the simple process of preparing food. It is the art of taking time to live, the art of taking time to do what needs to be done. The Momo Cookbook contains ninety authentic recipes from Morocco, Tunisia and Algeria, including some of the region's most characteristic and delicious dishes: tagines, couscous, briks and briouats, gazelle horns (delicately shaped almond pastries) and refreshing mint tea.

As well as recipes, stunning photography evokes the romance and mystery of the region -- its colours, images, traditions and rituals, while award-winning writer, Janine di Giovanni, contributes prose-portraits of the land, the people, their customs and their legendary hospitality.

5 out of 5 stars A Gastronomic Journey worth the undertaking.......2005-10-07

I picked up this book as soon as I saw the cover and when I scaned the insides I knew immediately that I had to own this book. I adore books that take my hand and draw me in and effortlessly and skillfully transport me to another place. With spell-binding precision, this book gives us a glimpse into the people, the markets, the food and the land of North Africa, and creates a mood that prepares us for the aromas, flavors and colors of these traditional savory and sweet dishes. I was impressed with the number of tagine recipes given, and immediately made the Chicken Tagine with Honeyed Pears and Cinnamon. This was easy to prepare and as delicious as it suggested. I have also made and loved the Soup of Chick-peas, Pumpkin and Aniseed which I served with the Couscous with Fish (in an improvised couscoussier ) to a small group for dinner. The recipe for Tomato Confit with Golden Sesame Seeds is a wonderful example of how ethnically diverse a simple tomato can be.

    5 out of 5 stars A Passageway into The 5 Senses of N.African Cuisine.......2004-08-24

This N.African now restauranteer in Europe desires to share his passion for his native cuisine, with its simplicity, mystery, and satisfying qualities.

It is cuisine that is not difficult to prepare, nor difficult to secure its ingredients. It is also cuisine that can use ingredient substitutes with success. It is above all cuisine to relax with and enjoy, not fast food but sensual cusine which takes in all the senses for a feast. I find this cuisine highly attractive and relaxing, a real cuisine to share with special friends.

This cookbook endeavors to be as its cuisine, attractive to the senses -- it has great photos as well as great accompanying copy -- the recipes and history behind them are chosen carefully, so that there is not just an abundance, but some very good ones.

There are fine sections on the people, the ingredients, then three countries' cuisine: Morocco, Tunisia and Algeria. I'm especially fond of this cuisine. These recipes caught my attention and palette: "Harira-- Moroccan soup which is yummy, loaded with lentils and chickpeas, veggies, grains, and lamb or beef. Then one of my favorites due to its being part of my first Moroccan meal -- Pigeon Pastilla, which I substitute with chicken with outstanding results. The King Prawn Tagine is scrumptuous, with its layering in tagine of fennels and tomatoes with prawns cooking on top of this aromatic bed. Or a knockout of main course: Confit of Duck Tagine with pears, figs and glazed carrots. Amazingly refreshing Couscous Seffa--a sugary delight with raisines and tea and orange blossom water with buttermilk, a Moroccan rice pudding type dish.

An Algerian hit is "Lamb Ribs in a Coriander Crust".

There is additional aids on Wines and Drinks, menu ideas, glossary, book references.

4 out of 5 stars An absolutely gorgeous book.......2003-08-20

This gets four stars because I think it is lean on recipes.

It does, however, have a wealth of text and images. I normally avoid cookbooks with pictures of food in them, but this one is definitely worth and exception to the rule. The ingrediants are attainable too, and I live in a small town far from a large city. I especially like that the recipes are in metric. Sadly, since this is a British cookbook, it isn't a sign that America is modernizing.

5 out of 5 stars The most inspirational North African cookbook I've read!.......2000-07-11

What a gorgeous book! The photography is unbelievable--I'm tempted to buy a second copy just to cut out and frame selected prints. But this treasure goes beyond appearances--the recipes are delightful and do-able. Some may complain that many of the ingredients are too exotic, but I find that to be much of the appeal of world cuisines. And while the book is indeed a British publication and measurements are most often given in metrics, American ounces are also given (in any case, a good-quality food scale is a great investment for the home chef). This title will be on my holiday gift-giving list for culinary friends and armchair travellers. As good as or better than my vast Paula Wolfert/Kitty Morse/Claudia Roden collection, and that ain't small potatoes! Or small pastilla...

Special dishes by established restaurateurs from Morocco, Spain and France* Moroccan cuisine is a rich melting pot of Phoenician, Carthaginian, Roman, Arabic, Ottoman and European influence, the legacy of centuries of invasions by foreign peoples and empires, all leaving their distinctive cultural mark. Moroccan cuisine is also formed of the culinary traditions of the nomadic Berber tribes, whose couscous and tajine dishes are part of their staple diet. Furthermore, Islam has played a fundamental role in defining Morocco's culinary traditions through laws on prohibiting pork, and by marking the end of Ramadan, the month of fasting, with ays of lavish gastronomic celebrations. Replete with fragrant spices, rich stews, plentiful fish recipes and mouth-watering desserts served with glasses of mint tea, Moroccan cuisine is a feast to the senses and discovering its pleasures will delight the novice in a culinary journey of fascination and pleasant surprise.

This exhaustive price guide, put together by antiques experts Ralph and Terry Kovel, has something for everybody, from Regency sideboards to Aladdin lunchboxes. The Kovels are the "first couple" of collecting, with 75 books, a syndicated weekly newspaper column, and a monthly column in House Beautiful to their credit. The 1999 price list is a thoroughly researched compilation of the current asking prices for more than 50,000 items. The pictures are helpful, the descriptions are clear, and the categories are useful, for the most part. Occasionally, however, persistence is necessary to locate an item: fruit labels aren't under labels or ephemera, but can be found under advertising. With that in mind, know that once you begin learning about Dick Tracy memorabilia, you may wonder about something else, and suddenly an hour has flown by while you read about Batman and you haven't even made it to the first sale yet. But once there, with Kovels' in hand, you will be more than well equipped to find the bargain that is hiding under everyone else's nose. --Christie Truly

I love the Kovels, they write exhaustively, and are incredibly knowledgeable. However I do find the layout of this book to be somewhat confusing. It's chock-full of good info, but needs better organization. Breaking things into topics and then alpahbetizing would work well, and make the book that much more useful. But for the seasoned collector their books are hard to do without.

              Book Description

Functional Pottery, the best-selling pottery reference first published in 1986, has been extensively revised and updated to include more than 250 color photos as well as hundreds of black and white photos and illustrations. Covering historical as well as contemporary pottery, this acclaimed and inspirational book presents both philosophical and practical experiences from the 43-year pottery-making career of Robin Hopper, one of North America's most recognized ceramic artists.

Perusing this book is like having a ceramic museum, art gallery, encyclopedia, and master potter at hand, teaching and inspiring at the same time. Beginning with a view of the historical development of pottery, the book presents a wide discussion on the aesthetics of form and design. Also addressed are the mechanics of making and the practical solutions to functional design in pots for eating, drinking, storage, pouring, cooking, serving, and pots for rituals and contemplation. The recent work and short biographies of 16 internationally recognized ceramic artists are showcased in the Portfolio section.

4 out of 5 stars Functional Pottery; Form and Aesthetic in Pots of Purpose.......2000-07-04

I found Functional Pottery to be a pleasant surprise for the most part, although I was mildly disappointed by the more practical sections of the book. Roughly the first half of the book provides an interesting historical and cultural review of functional pottery, which went beyond what I had anticipated from the title and general description. A portion of the second half of the book focused on the mechanics of particular forms of functional pottery. This portion, which was my particular interest in buying the book, was a little less thorough and extensive than I had hoped. For the beginner/intermediate potter specifically interested in practical advice and detail regarding the mechanics of functional pottery forms, the material in the book, while useful, may not go far enough. I recommend this book as a general overview, keeping in mind that the scope of the book covers a broader range of topics than implied by its title, and that only sixty pages of the book are dedicated to the practical considerations and mechanics of designing and creating functional pottery.

5 out of 5 stars For potters concerned about form and function.......2000-07-04

This book is an excellent addition to my collection of pottery books. This book deals with the more technical side of pottery. This book is for people who have accomplished throwing but want to take it to the next level. The book covers everyhting from history of pottery, to correct proportions, and also has artist bio's. Excellent book, i rate it 12 out of 10.

                              Book Description

The `corporation' is by far the most successful legal concept of organization among large business firms. Yet there are numerous examples of firms operated in corporate form that were troubled either by internal problems arising from divergences of interests between the firm's various constituents (notably, managers and investors), or by conflicts with other members of society (including both victims of accidents or environmental pollution caused by the firm and unpaid creditors in the event of business failure). It is this paradox between the corporation's prima facie success and its apparent ambiguity in other respects that is examined in this book.
Using modern economic theory concerning the functioning of markets and organizations, The Corporate Paradox examines how the concept of the corporation relates to the economic entity it organizes and in effect, how it may affect the use that firms make of society's valuable but scarce resources. To this end, both the economic rationales underlying the corporate form of organization and its effects on organizational and individual behavior are reviewed, with special emphasis on the separation between `ownership' and `control' and the principle of limited liability of shareholders, two features which are typical of the corporate concept. Finally, this book surveys, from a predominantly economic perspective, legal remedies that United States and Dutch law have developed in response to certain inefficiencies to which these features may give rise.
