      Book Description

1943. Leah Widtsoe, family educator and the granddaughter of President Brigham Young, writes a cookbook for the family. John Widtsoe writes in the Foreword: Thus it comes about that the woman who prepared the food of the family rises to a place of first social importance. If she does not comply with the modern knowledge of nutrition, she becomes an incipient menace to humanity. If, on the other hand, she strives to use all available food knowledge, she becomes a producer of health among her family. See other titles by this author available from Kessinger Publishing.

        Book Description

The Essential Mormon Cookbook is a time-honored collection of recipes not found in standard cookbooks- family favorites passed down from generation to generation, traditional potluck dishes served at Church gatherings, and other gifts from the kitchen shared by neighbors and friends. This is the perfect source for these hard-to-find recipes you remember from your childhood, such as Christmas Morning Casserole, Pot Roast with Gravy, and Fresh Peach Cobbler. Also included are recipes to feed a crowd, compassionate service casseroles, and a conference-weekend brunch. More than 200 recipes, gathered from four generations of family cooks, are divided by seasons and event in this unique collection of Mormon comfort food.

        5 out of 5 stars Amazing BooK!.......2006-04-28

This cookbook is filled with all of those recipes that you ask for from complete strangers at church suppers. Simple down to earth and even healthy!

2 out of 5 stars Trying to clog your family's arteries? This cookbook is for you!.......2006-04-25

Having grown up around many Mormon families, I was excited to receive this cookbook and try out some of the recipes at our neighborhood potlucks. The book itself is beautiful, but the recipes are so unhealthy that it would be irresponsible to feed these finished dishes to families and friends. It's easy to make something fattening and unhealthy - which describes nearly everything in this cookbook - and I was hoping that the recipes would at least have been modified to make them healthier for today's lifestyles. I'm not a health food fanatic, and appreciate a fattening meal here and there, but this book is over-the-top in the "what not to eat" category. For me, there isn't much in this cookbook that sounds like it would be worth the trouble making.

        5 out of 5 stars A Family Pleaser!.......2005-08-02

This is definitely a great book for Mormons! The recipes taste great and don't take an entire day to prepare. The average recipe serves 6-8 people. My four kids eat what I make when it is from this cookbook. The other thing I love is that the book aranges the recipes by season, so all the ingredients are in season. Also, the recipes fit the occasions and weather. However, if you are on a diet this would not be the book for you. However, seeing that I lost 30 pounds when I finally quit dieting 6 years ago, and instead focused on eating regular normal meals, I'm not a fan of low-fat, low-carb, low calorie, vegetarian meals. If you aren't either, this is a great little cookbook!

        1 out of 5 stars Unimpressed.......2005-05-24

I am disappointed in this cookbook. The recipes are either too simple (one sauce "recipe" is just canned cream soup and sour cream, and there's another "recipe" for asparagus with butter and salt) or too terribly unhealthy. We try to eat moderately, but this is over-the-top fatty for us. I would say that if you like to cook already, this book won't be enough of a kitchen workout, and if you like to eat healthy, you won't find much here. On the other hand, if you are just learning the very basics of cooking and don't care much about fat content or calories, then this might be the perfect book for you.

        5 out of 5 stars Great recipes.......2005-05-19

I have used this cookbook for my family of 10, every recipe has been enjoyed, these are "traditional" favorites! Makes a great shower/bridal gift with boxes of green jello!!!

I am lazy by nature. My family admits to being very picky about food. I kill plants just by looking at them. I am the last person you would guess would compile a cookbook. But, I love my family, the Lord and nutrition. I made a commitment to the Lord that I was going to come up with a way to prepare quick, easy, nutritious meals that my family would eat. He lead me to do this cookbook. Sorry, folks, but I wrote this cookbook for myself and my family! I pray, though, that it can bless others lives as much as it has blessed my own. In July 2000, I completed this cookbook, spending 8 months of my precious free time (My girls were 3 and 1.5 then) reading, researching, compiling, experimenting, and typing. I printed a hard copy to send to publishers, and in the process of upgrading my computer, my well intentioned husband accidentally erased my cookbook, never to be seen again. I grieved and was angry, but now I am grateful. I have learned and matured so much more since then, and this book is better for it. I retyped everything from my one hard copy, backed up everything on my computer, raised money to self publish, and 5 years and 2 babies later....voila! A cookbook. I have memories of learning things about food growing up, and as I watched friends and family struggle with health issues, the Spirit was telling me that there were ways to prevent things like diabetes, cancers and the like. My fixation with nutrition began during my first pregnancy, though. Even though I am the youngest of 6 and had many neices and . . .

                    Product Description

In this, the definitive work on Duncan Phyfe, Nancy McClelland, noted authority on the history of American antiques, recounts with keen appreciation the story of his life and work. She identifies the English Regency style, tells how the style developed, shows how it influenced Phyfe, and then describes both the man himself and numerous examples of his furniture construction -- his tables, chairs, sofas, sideboards, beds, etc. Accompanying the text are many fine photographs of famous Regency homes and furniture, houses built during the Classical Revival in America, and scores of Phyfe's masterpieces. Succeeding chapters, also enriched with photographs of surviving pieces, describe work by Phyfe's competitors -- Lannuier, Michael Allison, John Gruez, John Seymour, Samuel McIntire, Nehemiah Adams, Henry Connelly, etc. -- and work by Phyfe known to have been bought by specific customers -- William Akin, John Alling, John Jacob Astor (the person most responsible for Phyfe's commercial success), William Bayard, Thomas Lattimer Bowie, De Witt Clinton, Dr. Edward Delafield, William Livingston, John Wells, and others. Addenda, following the last chapter, display drawings of characteristic Phyfe details, genealogical charts of the Phyfe family, a copy of Phyfe's will, and similar intriguing material.

a very large home and yet feel unhappy with it. I had such a feeling of peace just reading about the kind of life described in this book!

5 out of 5 stars makes you wanna sell everything!!!.......2007-09-23

This book takes my breath away...it makes me want to sell everything and move into the smallest space I can find. Everyone needs to read this and realize what we are all capable of living without!!

5 out of 5 stars A small house must read............2007-07-15

I was skeptical when I first heard of the book since the cover had photos of what I considered some old, boring small homes. Then I looked closer and saw there were some really interesting looking ones like I have seen in Mexico, Greece and along the coasts of France, Italy and Spain and even in Scotland and Ireland.

Like that the author challenges the reader to really set aside notions that one had about how things have to be done. And how thinking outside the box, and asking oneself how little does one need to be content and how can that thinking be applied to designing or redoing a small home to make it more livable as well as more calm and enjoyable.

And how to use materials that are reclaimed but also energy efficient and appealing to the eyes. And a home that will allow you to live well and below your means. In fact I lay in bed and realized the small cottage I live in that was built in the late 1800's is to big for me. That I want something clean, small and open.

And the book may make you go even further as I have done, and sell off a lot of stuff one has that one doesn't need nor often even want. Almost like being told that a really cool sailboat with living quarters below can be yours within two weeks, and you then get really serious and sort out what you really need and then make the move.

This book should challenge as well as inspire the reader. Even the one who thought owning a McMansion was the only way to go.

5 out of 5 stars With New Eyes.......2007-03-02

This book really changed how I look at home life. The text is meaty and kept me up two nights in a row. I had been grumping about how cramped my house seemed. With a spouse, two dogs, and a cat our 2000 sf seemed, well, just not big enough. After reading the book, and thinking about it, I saw the real problem, it was never a space issue, it was a stuff issue. For the past two weeks we have thinned, sorted, trashed, donated and otherwise cleared out roughly half of what was in the house. Now the house can breathe and there is space for us. So, even if you live in a regular size space, or can't imagine living in a small one, this is a grand book. It really helps you see the functions of a home and isolate your needs. If you are working at living a simple, green or wabi-sabi life this book is a must.

5 out of 5 stars this book is amazing.......2007-02-28

It is much much more than a set of floorplans. It is a guide to a happy life in your home. Here's a quote "do you want to live in a home or a bank?" - So many people look at their home as an investment first, and dont really look at how happy they really are in their house.

This book made a major difference in how I look at my existing house. My fiancee and I are using the insights from the book to happily merge two households into one - without "space wars". It has given me insight which enabled me to feel that "I own my house - my house does not own me". There are lovely photographs and ideas - as well as a great sprinkling of history and insightful thoughts throughout the book.

Like the small but elegant domiciles the authors highlight, this book is no assembly-line product... it is obviously a carefully constructed labor of love.

                        Book Description

A magically photographed collection of cottages, rustic cabins, tree houses, and huts by the sea, with advice and ideas for decorating a small space of your own.

Is there anyone who doesn't dream of having a cozy getaway spot within earshot of the surf, high on a hill, deep in the woods, nestled in a suburban garden, or even up a tree? In Little Retreats, Jane Tilbury invites us into a variety of havens that are just big enough to offer a soothing retreat from the weekday world.

Little Retreats takes us on a magical tour of 100 wonderful architectural idylls in the United States and Europe, showing both interiors and exteriors. It is filled with tips on maximizing a small space, while also making it comfortable and inviting. For example, even in the most primitive cabin, the addition of sumptuous fabrics or delicate embroidery can create a welcoming space.

As more people invest in second dwellings and country retreats, they need practical ideas for decorating. Little Retreats offers ideas for creating a second home that is both cozy and calming. In the tradition of The Not So Big House and Chris Madden's Getaways, Little Retreats lets us visit an imaginative group of hideaways that are within the reach of every dreamer.

5 out of 5 stars lots of great ideas: charming spots brought to life.......2002-02-19

a wonderful and diverse photo essay on many small houses around the world. Great detail provided - so great ideas that can be projected into your own project.
good writing providing background and approach to each house by its owners, great photos.

3 out of 5 stars No Middle Ground.......2001-12-28

The Retreats are mostly exceedingly expensive or wildly funky (it takes a special person to really enjoy a sojourn in a teepee). The photography is beautiful, which is a saving grace for the book.

Perhaps this reader is overly attuned to comfort, but I was dismayed at all the circular stairways, ladders, and challenging skywalks to enter or navigate these homes-away-from homes. Some were set in such boggy, swampy areas, all I could think of were mosquitoes and other unpleasant insects. If readers are expecting examples in the United States, they will be disappointed; most of the retreats were set in the British Isles.

The book illustrates a variety of settings: seaside, desert, mountains, lake and forest as advertised. "Little Retreats" is fun to read, but I would not recommend it as a practical guide.

4 out of 5 stars Perfect for what it is.......2001-12-15

"Little Retreats" covers what it sets out to do. It's not a house plan or how-to book---and it doesn't claim to be. It succeeds in the task the author set for it, with pictures of charming, whimsical, personal homes. Places are quaint without lapsing over into funky and the text is concise. Looking through it is like a tiny vacation as one imagines having a private space of one's own as a refuge.

I rated it at four stars instead of five because while I like it, I'm not passionately in love with it or transformed by it. (The recently released "Storybook Style" raises the bar for perfection in a home & garden book, in my opinion.) It's an enjoyable book and I'm glad to have it in my collection.

                        2 out of 5 stars Lovely book..........2001-07-13

Lovely book, wonderful photos of creative little retreats. Lovley word descriptions, too. But it was not what I was hoping for. Few interior shots that show how the spaces actually work. No floorplans, no useful information on how to plan or design a little retreat of your own. Lovely book though.

I got this book in a gift pack from MOPS last year (Mothers of Pre-Schoolers - a great mommy network, by the way!). I was really disappointed when I finished the book because it touched me each day where I needed it. It helped me lighten up and reminded me my unusual experiences are actually normal. Lorilee's style is very casual and hilarious. Her work is so approachable that you feel as though one of your friends is sitting right there sharing each story with you personally. Her style, personality, and Christian perspective remind you that God really isn't so uptight and He loves to laugh and relax as well.

Every mom with little ones can benefit from and appreciate the amusing, thoughtful and profound "mini-retreats" from Lorilee Craker. She draws from her experience as a busy mom, understanding that women don't have time or energy to read preachy meditative volumes. The chapters are short and sweet, yet they leave the reader with words of wisdom and encouragement to chew on all day.

One of my favorite chapters relates the story of the little pregnant stray cat that Lorilee's family adopted. I laughed as I read her concerns about her willingness to act as doula for the little feline.

You will laugh and you will cry as you read Just Give Me A Little Piece of Quiet. It's a PERFECT baby gift - especially for a second-time mom. I highly recommend it.

Check out all of her books! You'll be so glad you did - and you'll be a better mom and wife because of it.

Lorilee Craker has got to be the funniest writer I have read on motherhood. This book is set up for short reads. I read a little two or three page blurb before bed and it has validated me as a momma and remind me that "I am not the only one". Craker has a definite gift at conveying her humor, I can't wait to read another book by her!

5 out of 5 stars She Gets It!.......2005-11-23

Lorilee Craker's book is like a great conversation with a friend. She understands that moms need adult conversation. She knows mama is tired, but that she loves her job.

I loved the short chapters - perfect for a life of constant interruptions! I have 3 boys under 4 years old, so reading big-girl books is a luxury I can't always afford...this one was like a breath of fresh air to remind me that I'm not crazy, my kids are normal (most of the time), and that you just have to laugh at this season of life.

Loved it! (Get all her other books, too - you deserve it, mama.)

                            Book Description

A Highland Regimental Scout recounts his experience of the Retreat from Mons. This is a superb account of the early stages of the First World War in Europe. Its author was a infantryman of the British Army who had been a serving soldier for seven years before the outbreak of war. His principal speciality was as a scout within his famous Highland regiment-the Black Watch. As an author he is able to deliver a gripping story in an impactful, spare style, ideal for conveying this narrative of non-stop combat as French's 'contemptible little army' fought stubbornly from Mons to the Marne. The quality and professionalism of the British Regular Army of the period shines through on every page of this story of dogged retreat during a time of fluid manoeuvring. Cassells' was a war of charging Uhlan cavalry, of famous regiments like the Scots Greys playing their traditional cavalry role, of advancing grey waves of German infantry, and the of a hugely outnumbered army falling back, undaunted in spirit and bloodily contesting every inch of ground. This book cannot be recommended too highly--not only is it a riveting account of the Retreat from Mons the ordinary fighting infantryman knew, but it is a first rate narrative of personal experiences at the sharp end of war in the early Twentieth century.
