Misguided recipes.......2005-09-01
Having looked at the wonderful recipes in this book for years, I was excited when an opportunity finally came along to use it. For my mom's birthday, I decided to make the Sacher Torte. The recipe seemed straight forward and simple to make. However, there are some major flaws in this recipe. How is a person supposed to fold egg whites into a mixture of egg yolk and chocolate that has gone stiff and hard, even though you were following the exact order of the directions? Having to pound the egg whites in not only result in a dry and dense cake, but it was so thin after baking that I couldn't cut it in half at all. Not to mention that the cake was done in 35 minutes, rather than the 50-60 miutes indicated. And the glaze for the cake was horrible! After three minutes of boiling, the mixture resembled brown sand, and I couldn't get get more than 2 tablespoons of butter to mix in. I ended up making a buttercream frosting instead. If you are a professional chef and know how to fix the problems in these recipes, you might enjoy this book. But if you are simply a person who likes to bake, stay far away!
A Beautiful Book!.......2003-10-14
This is one of those small books by Barron. I have made the chocolate pound cake many times. It is described as the best pound cake the author has ever eaten. I agree with her. It's extremely moist and lasts for days. I have also tried a layer cake and the sour cream marble cake and have gotten similar results.
The book is well designed. Although there are not a lot of color photographs in this book, those that are included are first rate.I do, however, have a couple of complaints about the book. You are not told--at least in the recipes I've tried-- where to put the rack in the oven. Also, in the recipe for pound cake, hot water is included in the list of ingredients but you are left on your own as to when and how to include that with the other items.
Serious Cook & 10 Year User of this book.......2000-03-10
I've been using this book since it was first published in 1989 and have tried nearly every recipe. All are uniformly excellent and beautiful, sucessful and extremely satisfying. Its one of those cookbooks that is so well written and researched that you keep going back to it time after time, completely sure of success. I have presented these desserts at countless dinner parties. They range from the dramatic cabbage shaped chocolate cake and chocolate sack with apricot creamand fresh fruits to the comforting: the very best, easiest brownie recipe and the simple, rich mexican hot chocolate. Honestly, The book is worth it just for this brownie recipe. If I could only choose five cookbooks to keep for the rest of my life, this would certainly be one of them. Buy it, and cook from it.
Check out the chocolate mousse recipe, worth the whole book!.......1999-10-29
A pal of mine gave me this book as a Christmas present a few years ago; and in my intermittent waves of cooking frenzy vs. dieting I regret to say I've only tried one recipe. It is, however, so killer that it's worth what she paid for the book. It's called "Kit's Chocolate Mousse" and is the ultimate mousse for those of us who like it thick and frothy [unlike pudding, which is gooey and drippy.] You can both gain weight and salivate just reading the ingredients, including [brace yourself] 2 cups of heavy cream and 6 eggs.
If I ever get around to the rest of the book, I'll start with the recipe for Mexican chocolate. The photography is excellent, the layout is charming, and the recipes only for the serious chocolate lover.

Book Description
This debut anthology features short fiction, novel excerpts, and essays that have won the James Tiptree, Jr. Award. Created in 1991 to honor the innovative fiction of Alice Bradley Sheldon (who wrote under the pen name James Tiptree), the Tiptree Award is presented to speculative fiction that explores and expands gender roles—and in the process touches on the most fundamental of human desires: the need for sex, for love, and for acceptance. This collection includes thought-provoking essays by Suzy McKee Charnas, Karen Joy Fowler, Ursula K. Le Guin, Pat Murphy, and Joanna Russ.
Customer Reviews:
Excellent.......2005-08-08
It's been years since I picked up an S.F. book; this was an impulse grab on my way out of the library a few weeks ago. What I remember of S.F. is lots of stories centered around men in space, with lots of ridiculous, unpronounceable names for things and goofy deus-ex-machina "technologies." Most of these stories have neither of those elements. They are considered, accessible contemporary fiction, some of the best being written in any "genre" in the world today.
The excerpt from Matt Ruff's HOUSE OF SOULS excited me tremendously, and I'm now reading that book.
A good collection..........2005-05-14
James Tiptree, Jr. was one of my favorite SF authors back when I first was reading SF as a kid. Since I mostly read older books from the library, I wasn't "in" on the "big secret"--that James Tiptree was really "James Tiptree" aka Alice Sheldon. An award named after the author's nom de plume was created a few years ago and this is the first volume to fete the winners.
The award goes, it seems, to stories that explore gender roles. It is kind of a weird thing to build an award around, if you think about it. It isn't "stories that prominently feature women", for example: instead it is about stories in which gender or gender roles play a prominent part.
The stories presented here are uniformly excellent (which you would expect: the award winners are not in chronological order, so you'd expect them to pick the very best for the first volume).
The essays are less effective; a couple of them are familiar from other places (the Le Guin entry, for example, feels like pure filler--why didn't they just excerpt Disposessed for cryin' out loud?!?). The letter from Tiptree, reprinted here, is glorious, although, oddly it did make me wonder what she would have thought of the award. The introduction is slightly goofy. Suzy Charnas's essay is good, if a bit more inside baseball than I really needed.
Still and all: you're unlikely to pick up a better anthology this year. And the broader, quirky scope of the award keeps the volume from being tedious: there are lots of interesting gender roles to explore in SF and there is nothing mawkishly politically correct about the award winners (which one might reasonably fear going in).
Highly recommended.
An anthropological account of a woman linguist .......2004-12-12
The Tiptree Awards honor fiction which explore and expand gender - and the award winners chosen for this first anthology reflect such notable masters of the art as Tiptree herself, Joanna Russ, Ursula LeGuin and other notable writers of science fiction and fantasy. From boys stolen from their homes to lead new wild lives in a strange world to an anthropological account of a woman linguist on another world, anticipate involving, gender-breaking stories which always offer the unexpected in plot and twist of action.
groundbreaking, provocative, and hot.......2004-12-08
The Tiptree Award is given to speculative fiction (fantasy and science fiction) that pushes the boundaries of gender. The award was named for a writer (James Tiptree, Jr.) extolled for masculine writing, who was later revealed to be a woman (Alice Sheldon). The Tiptree bake sales were created to be an ironic source of funding for the award. Hence the tag line of this subversive anthology: "Sex, the Future, and Chocolate Chip Cookies."
In "Birth Days" by Geoff Ryman, a geneticist trying to cure homosexuality discovers reproductive freedom. It's a sweet, surpising and pointed story. Richard Calder's "The Catgirl Manifesto," is a faux-academic piece in which Lolita-like catgirls cause social havoc with their deadly allure -- sexy and creepy as hell. Ursula K. Le Guin weighs in with a characteristically wry essay, "Genre: A Word Only a Frenchman Could Love." She points out that Margaret Atwood's THE HANDMAID'S TALE is actually a science fiction novel, but that Atwood's publishers were terrified to bill it as such, given the reputation of the genre.
In a clever juxtaposition, three versions of the "The Snow Queen" fairy tale are included, inlcuding the original Hans Christian Andersen version in a new translation (not at all as you remember it!); "Lady of the Ice Garden" by Kara Dalkey, set in feudal Japan; and Kelly Link's "Travels with the Ice Queen," which has a distinctly modern (ok, postmodern) spin, and may be one of the best fairy-tale retellings I've ever read.
These excellent stories and essays are from the 2003 winner of the Tiptree Award (Matt Ruff for SET THIS HOUSE IN ORDER), and the short-listed selections (which are announced at the same time as the winner, and given almost equal billing). Other contributors include Karen Joy Fowler, Joanna Russ, Suzy McKee Charnas, and Pat Murphy.
This is a thoughtful, entertaining, and frankly long-overdue anthology. If you like sexy, challeging, and utterly captivating writing, this is the book for you.

Book Description
Following the successful debut of the series, this second serving of innovative storytelling continues to celebrate thought-provoking and provocative speculative fiction. Touching on the most fundamental of human desires—sex, love, and the need for acceptance—Tiptree Award–winning authors continually challenge and redefine social identities, simultaneously exploring and expanding gender. James Tiptree, Jr. was the pseudonym of Alice Bradley Sheldon, whose lasting contributions to the genre are honored every year with the award. This collection gathers short fiction and essays that were chosen by the Tiptree Award judges in 2004, as well as additional selections from previous years. Contributors include Raphael Carter, L. Timmel Duchamp, Carol Emshwiller, Eileen Gunn, Joe Haldeman, Nalo Hopkinson, Gwyneth Jones, Jaye Lawrence, Ursula K. Le Guin, Jonathan Lethem, Debbie Notkin, Julie Phillips, Johanna Sinsalo, and Leslie What.
Customer Reviews:
issues of gender roles.......2006-08-05
It's not your typical science fiction anthology. Rather, you might treat it as sitting on the fringes between SF and maybe sociology. The book is inspired by Tiptree's memorable fiction of the 70s and 80s. It looks at issues of gender roles and the expectations of these by a society.
Several of the contributors are very prominent, like Ursula le Guin, and Joe Haldemann. The editors' choice of Haldemann's work as the best is probably correct. But guess what? You of course should then read his full story, and not confine yourself to the excerpt in this anthology.

Book Description
Capture your thoughts in this beautifully designed lined journal.
160 pages (lined), 6 x 8 inches, with concealed wire-O binding
Book Description
Life is full of ups and downs. And while keeping your chin up may hide a double chin, it won’t improve your mood. Looking on the bright side will make you squint, which will lead to crow’s feet, and there is nothing cheerful about crow’s feet.
Listen, if you’re feeling down, it’s going to take a lot more to set things right than insipid platitudes about a cloud with a silver lining. (What is that anyway? Acid rain, or what?) In When You Need a Lift, comedienne Joy Behar and a host of her friends share the simple, silly, profound, and personal things they turn to for comfort when life gets hard.
For Joy, it’s her sense of humor and handbags. Not surprisingly, music legend Burt Bacharach turns to songwriting and performing. Kaye Ballard indulges with a big bowl of pasta. Beau Bridges counts his blessings. Former First Lady Barbara Bush finds solace in the work of Jane Austen. Tony Danza plays the ukulele. Larry King recommends laughter—tell a joke, read a funny book; every time you laugh, a little sadness slips away.
And that’s some advice you can actually use.
Customer Reviews:
add a little Joy to your lives.......2007-09-21
This is a very cute book written by the last original View hostess, Joy Behar (not counting her majesty, Barbara Walters, of course.) This is actually a collection of stories from celebrities that discuss what makes them happiest and what cheers them up. Who can't add a little extra joy to their lives? It's a very funny and original book that will surely put a smile on your face. And isn't the cover picture such a great shot of Joy? She looks so happy, red is really her color! If you liked this book, I also recommend Celebrity Detox: (the fame game) by Rosie.

It's about chocolate. About sibling rivalry.About resilience.......2001-11-01
Louie kid loves chocolate so much that his brother bets him he can't go without it -- and promises Choco Louie a new skateboard if he can resist his beloved chocolate.
It's a simple book, but you'll enjoy reading it to the kiddies because it satirizes marketing and branding (with all the faux chocolate-based products) and another side benefit: It playfully tweaks sibling rivalry and teasing. Read it to siblings -- they'll giggle with recognition as one kid antagonizes the other by tempting him with chocolate in scenarios that are wacky as Clouseau in the Pink Panther films. Finally, it's about a little boy named Louie who faces temptation with resilience and sticks to his vow to resist it.
It's about chocolate. It's about sibling rivalry. It's about time.
This book is wondeful. The pictures were colorful and fun........1999-10-12

I see bitterweet stars in the sky!.......2005-07-08
Chocolate Astrology is a collection of whimsical illustrations, interesting chocolate quotes and facts, really tasty recipes and descriptions of astrological signs. I am a Fire sign and love bittersweet chocolate, though sometimes i hanker for a piece of white chocolate, perhaps it's because my moon is in Libra. I have purchased several copies for birthday gifts. Who would have ever thought to marry two of my favorite interests, chocolate & astrology! What fun!
Art, Astrology and Chocolate!.......2005-07-06
A beautiful book for folks who like art, astrology and chocolate. The drawings are delightful, the stories charming, and the information and ideas about chocolate will send to right out to the store to buy....chocolate! Buy for friends, for birthdays, Valentine's Day or just to have for yourself. Enjoy it.
Besides being a little creepy..........2004-11-29
this is plain wrong. Neither I nor any of my Fire-sign friends enjoy bittersweet chocolate. This is ridiculous and strange.

best reference and idea book ever.......2003-10-03
I recieved this as my first book on the subject, from my husband. While I have purchased and previewed several others, none compares to the depth of techniques, layouts and helpful hints in this book. The cover is tattered and torn from so much use. It covers all kinds of pages, from babies to family hisory to whimsy and spectacular layouts for one of a kind looks. If you buy only one book on the subject, make it this one!
This book is great. Lots of clip art to copy........1999-06-18
I enjoyed this book because it was easy to copy the art work in the back and use it in my own scrapbooks. I got so many good ideas to get my pictures out of boxes and into safe scrapbook albums. This book is great for any level.

Book Description
The first author in which the traditions of Judaic thought and Greek philosophy flow together in a significant way is Philo of Alexandria. This study presents a detailed and comprehensive examination of Philo's knowledge and utilization of the most popular philosophical work of his day, the Timaeus of Plato. A kind of "commentary" is given on all passages in Philo's oeuvre in which the Timaeus is used or referred to, followed by a "synthetic" account of the influence that it had on Philo's thought.
