As children we ate our vegetables grudgingly if mom or dad had the muscle to make us. Now bowing to the gospel of nutritional studies, many folks have been encouraged to seek out foods that would make any self-respecting child swoon. Chief among these for older women are soy products, wild yam, and flaxseed, which contain plant estrogens that can help stave off certain well-known menopausal symptoms like hot flashes. The Hot Flash Cookbook delivers appealing, flavorful, low-fat recipes packed with nutrients that help keep bodies of all ages healthy, such as antioxidants and fiber to fight several types of cancer and calcium for strong bones. Unlike Estrogen, The Natural Way, though, the book doesn't tell you how much of each dish must be eaten daily to deliver a medicinal punch. Fortunately, recipes like Orange-Fennel Refresco, Beans and Bitter Greens, Sea Bass Miso, and Calico Chicken with Ginger go beyond the hot flash patrol and into the larger realm of healthful, enjoyable eating. --Francesca Coltrera

    Book Description

This book is a must-have gift for anyone interested in skiing or in the art of the poster. Organized by country, it features the world's foremost winter sport by drawing on an unparalleled collection of 800 vintage posters and paintings. Amassed by Mason Beekley over a lifetime dedicated to the celebration of all things skiing, the collection is now housed at the Mammoth Ski Museum in California and open to the public. In the 1910s and 1920s, skiing became the "in" thing among the young and the fashionable, who made such glamorous resorts like St. Moritz, Chamonix, and Garmisch famous. Like car racing, skiing was one of the sports that defined the twentieth-century's notion of the modern. It combined fast-paced action with the need to appear in stylish, sporty yet appropriate attire. Since it took place away from everyday urban life in remote and breathtaking mountain locations, it also combined the romance of travel with the stylishness of après-ski social life and ski chalet rusticity. Even in the steamship era, skiing quickly jumped the Atlantic and spawned such now famous ski resorts such as Vermont's Stowe, Colorado's Aspen, and Canada's Banff and Whistler (all featured here in their pre-war glamour). The book is rounded out by chapters on the contemporary skiing scene and on skiing fashion.

    Book Description

The first history of surfboards is one of innovation---innovation that has in turn shaped the sport of surfing. The Surfboard follows this history, from the first "wave-riding" redwood planks crafted by ancient Hawai'ians to the vacuum-sealed, lightweight, "plastic fantastic" technological marvels of today. Beautifully illustrated with historical prints and engravings, as well as the latest surf photography and detailed closeups, this book documents the surfboard’s evolution as a perfect convergence of form and function.

It is obvious that surf style is not one of the authors' biggest attributes. This is an unknown. Surf books are hot, you don't have to be a hot surfer to put one together. This is a prime example. Posers looking back for coin. Coffee table book for flatlanders.

      Book Description

As early settlers to California, Oregon and Washington came around the Horn and sailed north from San Francisco, lumber for homes and industry went south by sea from the Northwest. And with nothing to guide them but the wind, compass, sextant, stars and a sixth sense, the sturdy little ships struggled through fog and gales; more than half of them foundering. This is the story of those ships and of the intrepid pioneers who built them. Through many old photographs and stirring true stories, an appreciation for the schooners, barkentines and other wind vessels and their crew is constructed to bring this golden age of wind ships to life. The Appendix presents lists of vessels over and under 100 tons made on the Pacific coast between 1850 and 1921, of all the skippers and all the ships specialized for the lumber and seal trades.

Great images from the often overlooked Surf Art category. I always wonder why Graffitti art seems to get more play in books & publications than surf art. Surf Art is a huge part of the surfing culture, a huge element of the lifestyle, depicting it, and making it more intriquing. I really enjoyed the book, and I like that it's a paperback, too.

          Book Description

Debby shows how the ebony connection communicates drama and rich texture, features ordinary items in unusual settings, and stimulates the eye by presenting the unexpected. No wonder black has been used successfully by quilters as far back as we have samples of surviving quilts! This book is dedicated to the premise that some of the traditional patterns can be sewn in quicker, more streamlined methods. Debby's innovative projects include a quick appliqu method that bypasses the use of freezer paper and a technique for using coffee filters for curved blocks. She proclaims the wonder of math with easy formulas for making any block with squares, triangles, and rectangles. AUTHORBIO: Debby Kratovil is a quilting teacher and prolific writer. She has been special projects editor for Quilt Magazine for ten years and says she enjoys teaching through the written word. Debby shares her patterns and techniques on her Web site, www.quilterbydesign.com, one of the oldest quilting sites on the Internet. Debby has been dubbed the 'power quilter' by her friends for the sheer number of quilts she makes. She is always motivated by the challenge of a new design and it execution in fabric.

          4 out of 5 stars Tableware collector's delight!.......2007-05-15

If you are an avid collector of all things for the fancy dining table, this is an excellent guide to take you back to the 10 course meals popular in Victorian days when a lady had a piece of silver for every purpose. Like tabletop trivia? This book will not disappoint. Inherit an odd piece of silver from Grandma that looks like an torture device from the Dark Ages and you have no idea what it could possibly have been used for? This lovely book reveals the purpose of the obscure and the antique. Beautiful illustrations and readable prose make this book a pleasure to read. The chapter on porcelain left a bit to be desired for the china lover but overall this is an excellent addition to the antique tableware enthusiast's library.

3 out of 5 stars Too expensive for the information given.......2007-01-29

This book was just too expensive for the information given. For the price, I had expected more photos and a wider variety of pieces.

The photos were nice and the descriptions seem to be accurate, but the title was so deceptive. This book is really not about "Laying an Elegant Table", as the title says. Rather, this book is a book that shows some very expensive pieces, most of which the average person will never (ever) see (aside from at a Museum). This book needed a better title, so as not to deceive the purchaser. I would never have bought this book, had I had a chance to preview a few more photos before-hand.

3 out of 5 stars A Wonderful Book for the Novice.......2007-01-18

I had really hoped to view some well put together settings using a variety of exquisite items. The focus is definitely French and English leaving out much of the truly beautiful German, Austrian and, yes, even American contributions to a beautiful table. The photography is minimal with sketches predominating.
It is a start however and should inspire further research on the part of a discerning reader. There also many helpful hints and explanations for the new collector or enthusiast.

5 out of 5 stars Elegance has Changed and for the Better.......2007-01-09

Perhaps it was those years in college of using mayonaise, jelly, and cheese bottles for glasses that has left me with an appreciation for good tableware, particularly for glassware.

So the first thing I turned to was the section on Gassware and Stemware. First the pictures in this section are beautiful (and clear glassware is very difficult to photograph). The descriptions, and the detail that she then covers in relatively few words is quite impressive.

Surprisingly the author suggests that the well set table of today need not have all matching sets of anything to be elegant. I really liked this idea because the stemware that I've purchased down through the years have followed a somewhat eclectic path. They've come to me through flea markets, thrift shops, antique stores, where ever I've found something I like. As she says, 'exhibiting a mixture of styles and epochs, and as such is playful and easy to manage.' Besides, you don't cry if you break a glass, and I happen to like each piece.

This is a very, very enjoyable, entertaining and educational book.

Who hasn't gazed out a window and pictured the sumptuous meals, past and future, set in their own garden? With a trio of top food experts--photographer, writer and chef--enter a country garden and chronicle its life in the course of a year. A pictorial account of the garden as dining room takes us on a tour that begins with the chill remnants of winter, with earthy pleasures like truffle for tagliatelle; into the promise of spring with a potato, asparagus, and celeraic terrine; the glory of summer and the bounty it delivers for a sumptuous vegetable quiche...into a late, lazy visit to the "apple and mint" garden; and, finally, the chill of bittersweet autumn, complete with pot-au-feu or pumpkin soup. With scores of stylish table settings, this visual feast and treasury of exquisite recipes is a visit to a "dining room" not soon forgotten.

            Book Description

In his newest book, silver expert Richard Osterberg guides readers on a colorful, yet practical tour of fine antique silver. The books first part deals with silver flatware made circa 1875-1885, with a broad representation of patterns and forms. Next, a myriad of serving pieces are displayed, with examples of each type and function. In the third part, place settings are covered in many different patterns, showing the wide variety of pieces that were used, from the common knives, forks, and spoons to more obscure forms like individual bird knives, bird forks, and cherry forks. Finally, individual place settings are shown, together with silver, china, linen, and crystal to suggest dining as a truly stimulating visual expereince. Throughout the text value ranges are given, making it easy to look up individual prices. Using this book can be both inspirational and educational. It is both a must for collectors wishing to identify pieces of old family silver and an essential aid to the modern host or hostess.

3 out of 5 stars Beautiful book, badly edited.......2003-04-28

The positives: This is a visually gorgeous book, jam-packed with photographs of silver flatware. Usual and unusual pieces are identified, and a range of patterns are illustrated. This was what I was looking for when I bought the book: A reference book to use to identify those weird utensils in the family silver collection. And, yes, "Yesterday's Silver" seems to serve that purpose well.

The negatives: Especially considering the cost of this book, the editing is shockingly bad! A page showing a range of ten different styles of forks, for example, will only have six of them labeled. A couple of captions are reversed. Luckily, the volume of photos and accurate captions are sufficient that a reader can compensate for editorial mistakes. But why, expecially at this price, should we have to?

It's also disappointing to find that some utensils are described in fairly minimal terms. What, for example, would a "Saratoga chip scoop" serve? Luckily I'd read some other silverware books recently, which explained the material more thoroughly. But, again, why would that information not be included here?

The cover states that the book includes a price guide. Well... that's stretching it a bit. Each illustration of silverware pieces lists a range of values for the items. But the values are rather vague, and judging from recent listings on ebay, quite exaggerated. The listings might make you feel good about the pieces you own, but they won't help with a realistic appraisal of the value of silver pieces.

All of that aside, I like this book. It really is beautiful, especially the opening pages that illustrate truly artistic pieces of silverware. I enjoyed reading it and think it will be a moderately useful reference over time. But it's disappointing to realize how much better it could have been, if only a little bit more editorial care had been taken.

5 out of 5 stars Oooohhhh! Neat book!.......2001-09-19

I don't know why I like this book so much, but I do.

It's a photo gallery of beautiful tables, with reasonably detailed instructions on how to make each of them. Some are very simple, others too complex for this weekend warrior, but all are fun to view and the different styles used in their construction.

Buy the book, it's worth it if for no other reason than sheer inspiration.

5 out of 5 stars Beautiful Vintage Linens.......2006-12-08

I love this book! This is THEE book on vintage Wilendur tablecloths and towels, some of the most beautiful vintage linens produced, as far back as the 1920's. Shows over 400 gorgeous pictures of tablecloths, towels, aprons, curtains and more, all produced by the Weil and Durrse company, the manufacturer of Wilendur and other brands. Lots of great information on the history of the company and information on all of their brand lines. Absolutely wonderful, very interesting book. Also recommended "Collectors Guide to Vintage Tablecloths" by Pamela Glasell.

5 out of 5 stars The Definitive Resource on Weil & Durrse Table Linen .......2005-04-25

The author provides a valuable resource for the collector, particularly for products of Weil & Durrse. Information on the companie's history is provided as well as current values based on condition. Fabrics, brands, colors and patterns are discussed and illustrated with the numerous photographs. Tablecloths are emphasised, but towels, aprons and other handicrafts are also covered. The author provides a useful chapter on storing and laundering linens as well. You will not be disappointed with the quality of the photographs, printing or insights offered in this volume. Highly recommended!

The recipes were original and not too hard to pull together. I especially loved those that featured regional cuisines, like mushrooms (Kennett Square Pa) and seafood from the Delaware and Maryland shore. It makes a wonderful gift - I have given it to hostesses, teachers and family members. Those that most appreciate it are those friends who have moved out of town, because, of the cooperation of the tourism offices from Delaware and historic Southern Pennsylvania the pictures and stories of the local attractions are like taking a mini-trip back home.

Nominated for the prestigious Tabasco award...this book offers fun and easy recipes which have been hits everywhere I have taken them!!! The professional photographs of the area were a nice addition - and I especially loved the pictures of the Wyeth and duPont homes - The sidebars are entertaining and read like a travel guide. You will love this book! I also enjoy supporting a non-profit dedicated to raising funds to promote literacy.

              Customer Reviews:

2 out of 5 stars An OK Book.......2005-12-22

This book is good but not great. The author simply builds 9 different tables. There is no discussion regarding how to manage wracking forces, no discussion on appropriate sizes (how big should a dining table be to seat eight?) or heights (how tall should a dining table be, how much clearance under the top should be allowed for legs?). There is no discussion of coffee tables or side tables.

the tables are fairly straight forward and most intermediate woodworkers would feel confident attempting any of these. So, consequently, the style of all of the tables is rather mainstream--none of the tables are remarkable or exceptionally beautiful. The designs are generally angular/orthoganal, some of them very much so.

There are a lot of photos of the construction process, about 30 for each table. In addition to the 9 pieces shown in detail, there are phoros of six other tables.

I suggest that you be more careful than the author. There are several operations that are much too risky. For example, before inlaying stringing on the glass-topped conference table, the author cuts a small bevel on the router table on a piece that is 3/8" square. His fingers are a quarter inch from the router bit! Definitely not OSHA approved. I suggest you build a sled to hold the workpiece.

Also, his tenoning jig has no way to attach the workpiece to it. All of the commercial tenoning jigs have a way to attach the workpiece, which is much safer. Holding a 40" tall table apron against a sliding jig is a recipe for kickback.
