Waiting 'Til the Midnight Hour: A Narrative History of Black Power in America
ASIN: 0822334496 |
Book Description
Perhaps more than any other Supreme Court ruling, Brown v. Board of Education, the 1954 decision declaring the segregation of public schools unconstitutional, highlighted both the possibilities and the limitations of American democracy. This collection of sixteen original essays by historians and legal scholars takes the occasion of the fiftieth anniversary of Brown to reconsider the history and legacy of that landmark decision. From the Grassroots to the Supreme Court juxtaposes oral histories and legal analysis to provide a nuanced look at how men and women understood Brown and sought to make the decision meaningful in their own lives.
The contributors illuminate the breadth of developments that led to Brown, from the parallel struggles for social justice among African Americans in the South and Mexican, Asian, and Native Americans in the West during the late nineteenth century to the political and legal strategies implemented by the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (naacp) in the twentieth century. Describing the decision’s impact on local communities, essayists explore the conflict among African Americans over the implementation of Brown in Atlanta’s public schools as well as understandings of the ruling and its relevance among Puerto Rican migrants in New York City. Assessing the legacy of Brown today, contributors analyze its influence on contemporary law, African American thought, and educational opportunities for minority children.

Book Description
Today, Bob Greene is a celebrated, nationally-syndicated columnist. In 1964, he was a seventeen-year-old Ohio high school kid. And he kept a diary.
It's all here. The teenage girl who got away. The twenty-seven-year-old woman who didn't. The first beer. The first job. A series of bad haircuts. Friendship and betrayal, griping and groping, a daily account of one boy's struggle -- and all of our struggles -- to forge his way into adulthood with dignity intact, virginity a bad memory, and the day-to-day knowledge that it's not going to get any easier.
"A delightful book, and like the song Greene cruised to that summer, fun, fun, fun." -- Los Angeles Times Book Review
"Everyone who was ever seventeen will love it!" -- Ann Landers
Customer Reviews:
I envy his motivation!.......2005-09-13
I read this book in one sitting at age 17. I was babysitting and remember sitting on the couch dazedly fanning the kids away as I plowed through this thoroughly engaging book, which began as a journal that Greene began keeping in hopes that the constant attention to the daily detail of life would improve his journalism skills. Perhaps my own scholastic career in journalism through high school and college, or my love of the Beatles, or my 17-year-old ability to relate to another 17-year-old, no matter how many decades he'd preceded me by, made me partial to this book. Whatever the reason, Greene's honest, untempered account reminds you not to glorify your high school years. Now 25, I have finally sought to own the book that has remained one of the best works I've ever read -- not for its uniqueness, but for its account of a wholly universal experience. One of my own life goals ever since has been to have the determination to write in my own journal every day for a year. Someday, perhaps, I'll actually do it!
Great book!!!!!!!!!!!!!!.......2004-07-08
Read this book in 1989 and I can still remember the difficulty I had putting it down. Tempted to buy another copy and read it again. This book will take you back to your youth regardless of your age or generation.
early 60's diary.......2003-04-11
a diary of the early 60's from a teenager's point of view--not bad
The Bull Starts Here.......2002-10-02
"Today, Bob Greene is a celebrated, nationally-syndicated columnist. In 1964, he was a seventeen-year-old Ohio high school kid. And he kept a diary.
"It's all here. The teenage girl who got away..."
Snicker, snort.
Be True to your School.......2002-01-11
Be True to your School. By Bob Greene, is one of the best books I've ever read. "I couldn't put it down." Every time the teacher told us to stop reading,I just had to keep on going. And the thing is I don't like to read! Every thing in it, is in young adults age group. "Bob shares with us his thoughts and every aspect of his teenage day to day life." There hasn't been anything in this book that I don't like. From getting the girls to going to the parties. But I don't agree with the drinking that went on in his teenage life, but I guess it has to happen sometime. I think its neat how Bob Greene's life went, and how it ended up. Its hard to believe that the things he did really happened, but it did! Like getting the girls, bad times with life and friends, parties and cruising. "Bob is unbelievable." From here on out anything that Bob Greene writes, I will read it. And if you are a highschool student with day to day problems and also some very great days this book is for you.
Customer Reviews:
I loved this cookbook.......2006-03-07
I must cordially disagree with the previous 2 reviewers who thought the recipes too rich. I made polenta with leeks and loved it! Good recipes for quinoa. A lot to choose from and not all of them had cream in the ingredients.
I did my usual drill of borrowing from library, trying a few recipes and then deciding whether to buy. I bought!
Tasty food if you are trying to kill yourself.......2004-05-21
I would guess anyone looking for a cookbook on grains would be thinking of healthy recipes that are also tasty. Well, you have come to the wrong cookbook. Make no mistake about it, the recipes are pretty delicious, but if I made a regular habit out of serving these butter & cream laden artery-cloggers at dinner, I would be slowly eating myself to death. To echo the earlier reviewer, look elsewhere for healthy recipes.
The 3 stars represent a combined rating. Because the recipes are tasty & pretty easy to prepare, I give the book 5 stars. Because of the utter lack of healthy recipes, despite the title leading you to believe otherwise, I give it 1 star.
Forewarned is forearmed. Enjoy these recipes, but don't overdo it.
Tasty and creative, but not very healthy........1999-05-20
This book has a wealth of creative recipes for grains, and the ones I tried were delicious. The "Four Seasons Olympic Bran Muffins" are so good, you could easily forget they're bran muffins, but like many recipes in the book, they have a very high sugar content. Low fat is definitely not a priority in this book either. In many of the recipes, the whole grain is a very minor ingredient. The book provides excellent general information about each grain and is useful for creative inspiration, but if you want healthy recipes, look elsewhere.
Customer Reviews:
One of the best cookbooks for flavorful cuisine!.......2000-12-30
I love Bert's cookbooks! They contain some of the most interesting and savory recipes I've encountered. From "Tagine Aid El Kebir" (Moroccan Lamb Stew), in the Couscous section, to "Georgian Yogurt and Barley Soup" to "Triple-Threat Onion Pilaf" with Bulgur, I always know where to go for a tasty meal.
As an added bonus, Bert includes personal stories and anecdotes that are sure to peak your interest or have you rolling on the floor (be sure to read the introduction to the chapter on bulgur where Bert describes his first sampling in a bordello in Paris).
Many of the recipes are quite healthy, such as "Sally's Crazy Health Bread" and "Healthy Farmer's Wife's Pot-Roasted Chicken" (with wheat berries). Many others are just plain good! The health-conscious may want to consider substituting healthier ingredients for some of the ones listed in the cookbook. I use Jane Brody's excellent "Good Food Gourmet" for ideas about healthy eating and ingredient substitution. Then again, many of the recipes in "The Grains Cookbook" are Mediterranean in origin. I've read many articles delineating how this is the healthiest cuisine of all. It is the typical American fare that is unhealthy, full of processed foods and saturated fats that are the real killers. Personally, I like Bert's recipes just the way they are.
This book may be out of print. It is certainly worth tracking down and purchasing.
For those who like this book, I would also recommend "Flatbreads and Flavors" by Jeffrey Alford and Naomi Dugid. This cookbook takes one on culinary odyssey from central Asia, through Europe to North America in quest of flatbreads and the flavorful dishes that accompany them.

A tribute to the more than 30 vegetables dear to veteran cookbook author Bert Greene's heart, Greene on Greens is a treasure trove of uninhibited recipes mixed with colorful anecdotes and tidbits of vegetable history and trivia. With recipes such as Boozy Celery (brandied cream is the secret), Cajun Artichoke and Spinach (anise liqueur is the unexpected ingredient) and Tomato Devil's Food Cake with Tomato Butter Cream Frosting, Greene creates unexpected textures and flavors while enticing even the most stubborn meat and potatoes types to eat their vegetables. The book won the 1994 James Beard Cookbook Award.
Customer Reviews:
Makes Veggies Unhealthy!.......2007-09-17
These recipes are loaded with cheese, bacon, cream and other heavy ingredients. If you are looking for recipes for vegetables that will enhance your health you are looking in the wrong place! Now I am all about fats that are healthy, but these I am afraid are not.
The only redeeming factor are his introductions where he discusses the vegetable.
Excellent cookbook that has stood the test of time.......2006-06-21
A passionate home cook that has been honing her cooking skills for the last 25 years writes this review. My favorite cookbooks are "The Professional Chef" by the Culinary Institute and "Culinary Artistry". With more than 500 cookbooks in my collection I am usually disappointed in my recent cookbook acquisitions. This book is a wonderful addition to any cookbook library. This book is NOT vegetarian. There are many vegetarian recipes and some vegan recipes, but there are also recipes that include meat.
The book is subdivided the vegetable those included are as follows:
Artichokes
Asparagus
Avocados
Beets
Broccoli
Brussels Sprouts
Cabbage
Carrots
Cauliflower
Celery and Celery Root
Corn
Cucumbers
Eggplants
Fennel
Greens
Kale
Kohlrabi
Okra
Onions and Leeks
Parsnips
Peas
Peppers
Potatoes
Spinach
Squash
String Beans
Sweet Potatoes
Tomatoes
Turnips and Rutabagas
Zucchini
At the beginning of each new vegetable section the author covers a little history, nutritional facts, what to look for, and how to prepare the vegetable.
This book contains a variety of ethnic recipes. There are many French, and Italian recipes. But the author has also included recipes from the Netherlands, Basque region and the Southern USA.
There are many delicious recipes in this book. I think that my favorite is the sautéed peas with walnuts or maybe the baked potato-stuffed cucumbers. It is hard to choose a favorite recipe from this book since so many of them are winners.
I would recommend this book to anyone that is interested in adding new vegetable preparations to their culinary repertoire.
A fantastic book i have used for 20 years........2005-05-28
I received this cookbook 20 years ago for a wedding present. I love it! Each vegetable is talked about as to what to look for in buying, what its historical uses have been(either worldwide or in his family), and what the author's favorite way of cooking it is. The recipes that follow are gleaned from many different sources. Not low fat, but high taste. I was given some fennel last year and had no clue what to do with it. Got out Greene on Greens and made some fabulous fennel bread.
Outstanding Veggie Coverage + Creativity.......2002-01-31
Want to enhance your vegetable dishes with some new variety and spice? This is great resource to help.
Having sought our at times just these goals, this book has always delivered. For instance, winter squash blaws? Try Winter Squash Creme Brulee or or Spaghetti Squash Tetrazzini. Amazingly is the richness of flavor in a parsnip based dish called Pike's Peak Souffle.
Just examples to wet your interest to find and try this. Over 450 recipes, each clearly detailed to follow. Not exceptional ingredients of the hard to find category. From Artichokes to Zucchini, this is handy reference to follow.
If chance, pick up his volume, one of my favorite cookbooks, Bert Greene's Kitchen Bouquets. He's a great cook and writer!
Engaging and informative text; superb recipes........1999-10-02
Bert Greene's books are all terrific, but this one is my favorite. It never disappoints me; Greene himself had a warm, wise personality and a love of good food. The directions on vegetable preparation are exceptionally good. The recipes themselves are fantastic. Buy this one!

Customer Reviews:
coin collector's bible.......2006-04-03
it really is the best "little" book for anyone interested in collecting coins or watching the value of owned coins go up. very reliable prices.
Useful Information but not pricing..........2005-09-24
The Redbook is a great reference for coin collecting. It has color pictures of almost every coin. It also illustrates die varities and other rare errors like double dies. The pictures are enlarged so you can see if your coins have a feature that makes them much more valuable. It tells you the mintage for each coin. Also, with each coin series there is a short history about the coin series. Included is a section about error coins.
The one bad thing is the pricing. It really is not much inline. If you want this book just for pricing I would not reccommend it. However, if you want it as a reference, I would highly reccommend it. Some prices are too high, and others too low. So if you want a good coin reference book, this is one of the best out there!
The best start for any coin collector.......2005-04-13
The Redbook is the US coin collector's bible. Every collector MUST have this book if they are collecting US coins. The Redbook lists every coin ever minted in the United States. It also tells you which mints have produced them (there have been many over the years) and how many where made at each mint. This is valuable information because the value of any given US coin will depend on its date, mint mark & condition.
The prices in the Redbook are representative of the full retail price of a coin. The vast majority of the coins listed can be had for considerably less though from any reputable dealer. In most cases, if a dealer tries to get the Redbook price for a coin, run, do not walk, to the nearest exit.
Try searching on Google for a "reputable coin dealer" (include quotes) to locate a reputable coin dealer in your area. Every coin dealers advertises the quality, value and convenience of shopping with them but how many advertise their integrity? Try googling for "integrity, quality, value & convenience" (include quotes) and just see how many coin dealers are willing to ride on their reputation!
If you are looking to sell some coins, do NOT base the price you want for them on what is shown in the Redbook. The price a dealer will offer you for you coins will be a dealer-to-dealer price (i.e. a wholesale price). You certainly don't want to be one of those naive collectors who walk into a coin shop and try to sell your coins for anywhere near the price shown in the Redbook. Most dealers would simply laugh at you and move on to the next customer (as rude as that be).
Again, if you are thinking about collecting coins, the Redbook had better be the first book you buy.
Still the Authority.......2005-01-15
I became fascinated with coins as a youth a zillion years ago. I worked on the Lincoln cents series, memorizing the valuable dates and prices before finally completing the entire set. Since that time I have returned to coins again and again, drawn by their allure on many levels. They serve as cultural icons - an encapsulated national history lesson. They are also beautiful works of art...one cannot help but be reminded of the great sculptor Augustus Saint-Gauden who designed, according to President Teddy Roosevelt, the "most beautiful coin ever minted" - the famous and breathtaking St. Gauden's $20 gold coin. Last, but certainly not least, coins serve as an anchor in bad economic times and as excellent (the best) investments. Even in this age of technology, savvy investors know that gold and silver are "for the ages".
Throughout it all the Redbook has been a faithful companion. It succeeds where others do not for several reasons - each edition builds on prior works, research is ongoing, latest findings are presetn but most important, it remains THE repository for fair pricing. I note that it still contains the reminder, "Well-struck, uncirculated pieces demand higher prices than shown". Some things never change.
The listings are accompanied by numerous photographs including a multitude of "close-ups". The warnings are also present - Be aware of washed coins or altered dates or forgeries. But it is the grading system that forms the core of the book. Despite the non-stop battles over grading methodolgy (I prefer the 70 point system since it seems the most objective) many experts still refer to the Redbook and its language concerning feathers, stars, "LIBERTY" and hair details. As long as there are silver and gold coins there will be a Redbook.
