Snack Attack.......2007-03-09
A great book. Lots of healthy alternative snack choices for all occasions. I love it.
Great Book.......2007-02-23
This book had a lot of fun and easy ways to stay healthy and still be able to enjoy certain foods we crave!
Great book.......2007-02-22
Ruth Glick has put together a book of great ideas for a healthy snack. Some are so simple, can't believe I haven't tried them before. Many can serve as a meal in themselves. Yes, some take a little more effort than you feel like some days for a snack, but they are well worth it. Can't wait to make more of the recipes.
Recommended both for health libraries and diabetics........2007-02-09
The problem with snacks which are good for you is they seldom taste good as those not so good, and are usually more time-consuming to prepare. That's why SNACK ATTACK helps on so many levels: it offers speedy tasty snacks for adults and kids alike, pairing recipes with nutritional analysis for quick choices. From pumpkin pie-spiced Hawaiian Meatballs to Bean and Pasta Soup with Sausage, dishes have been modified for healthy results and offer plenty of easy alternatives to less desirable foods. Recommended both for health libraries and diabetics.

Decent collection of simple recipes.......2004-06-10
This book offers a decent collection of recipes that are pretty simple to prepare, which is convenient if you have some guests over for something casual and feel like "noshing." But after going through it, only about 30% of the recipes ended up appealing to me (out of 175). Everyone has different tastes though, so you can't necessarily go by that.
Some of the recipes are just a little bit too simple (like the "nachos" recipe that pretty much just melts cheese on fat-free chips and serves it with salsa and sour cream). I really didn't need a cookbook for that one. She does use a lot of pre-packaged, canned, and frozen food mixes (like frozen veggie stir-fry mixes) so you really can toss some of the recipes together in a hurry for an impromptu get-together.
Some of the recipes were a bit high in sugars for me, upwards of 22 and 23 grams of sugars per serving, but there are some desserts that use sweeteners like Splenda that were appropriate.
If you're looking for recipes you can get on the table quick, then this might be what you're looking for. If you're looking for something extravagant, then you may not find a whole lot in here.
Approved by diabetes and dietitians experts.......2003-11-14
Now in an expanded second edition, Ruth Glick's The Diabetes Snack Munch Nibble Nosh Book enables people with diabetes to have nutritious, delicious, "diabetes friendly" snacks between mealtimes and at celebratory occasions. With twenty-five new and flavorful recipes added to those of the ground breaking first edition, The Diabetes Snack Munch Nible Nosh Book features recipes for one or two people (as well as for parties and crowds); snack ideas for hard to please kids and adults; nutritional analyses, prep times, and exchanges for each showcased recipes. As is appropriate for a diabetes diet, all of the recipes are low in both fat and sodium and are kitchen-tested, portion sized to aid blood sugar control and weight loss, and approved by diabetes and dietitians experts. If you or a family member is having to deal with diabetes or seeking to prevent the onset of diabetes, then The Diabetes Snack Munch Nible Nosh Book will prove a welcome addition to your personal and/or family cookbook collection!
One of My Favorite Cookbooks.......2003-09-16
The previous edition of this book is one of my favorite cookbooks. Before I got it, I was in a real snack rut. But Ruth certainly widened my appreciation of snacking. One thing I like is the way she gives you options. You can buy a crust for her Barbecued Chicken Pizza or make your own, if you're in the mood. It was fun to find out I could make things at home that I thought I could only get in a restaurant, like Egg Rolls and Pesto. There are even a couple of healthy versions of "Egg 'N Muffins." Some recipes are for things you eat right away. Others make bigger quantities, so you can eat some now and then have something yummy to pull out of the refrigerator-or enjoy snacking with friends.
One chapter is devoted to food for kids. And there are all sorts of neat recipes designed to make it fun for them to eat healthy snacks. Two of the recipes are named "Celery Man" and "Aladdin's Pizza." And there are directions for turning canned pear halves into cute little mice.
I also like the chapter on appetizers for grownups, like cocktail meatballs and chili con queso. When I bring them to parties, everybody loves them, and I don't have to worry about what I can nosh on, because these dishes are not only delicious but healthy.
The new version adds some great recipes to the book. There's a cranberry orange tart that's going to be a standard at our family Thanksgiving dinners. Another new favorite is the sweet potato pie with a really easy low-fat crust. And I love the New York style cheesecake and the teriyaki chicken bites.
Not worth it.......2003-09-07
Most of the recipes are redundant. Mistakes occur: Guacamole nutrition states 42 mg Cholesterol. How can 42 mg of Cholesterol exist in a recipe where the only possible animal fat results from 1 tablespoon of reduced-fat mayonnaise? Very disappointing!

Customer Reviews:
Great Pictures.......2003-03-27
The book has no index and the table of contents is only pattern names and not manufacturers. Although this book has great pictures, unless you specifically know what you are looking for; it is difficult to find things in it.
Great resource.......2002-03-02
Very pleased with this book. Many large, clear color photographs. Great variety of china and glassware included.
Gene Florence/glassware 40's 50's & 60's.......2001-09-24
The information in the book is interesting but not specific enough. Pages of pictures but do not name the pieces and sometimes it is difficult to know which piece is which. Also, can't really see the patterns very well; maybe so he can sell the book that just has patterns.
Another Winner.......2001-08-18
Gene Florence is the premier expert on vintage glassware. He does the collectibles industry a great service by having clear pictures of glassware that's often very difficult to photograph. Each edition differs enough in content to warrant a second look. He tries to add a few new patterns every time. For those he repeats, he adds different pieces and new finds. The nest part is that he has a lot of knowledge about the glassware companies and reproductions that he shares with the readers.

Customer Reviews:
A must-have guide for collectors and sellers alike........2003-11-16
This is another important addition to my library of collectible, kitchenware and depression glass books.
More than 40 new patterns are included and pricing and many pictures have been updated. I like the alphabetical listing because it is easy to find the patterns I'm looking for.
As an avid collector, I find this book invaluable in helping me pay reasonable prices for my collectible glassware.
I would give this book a 5 star rating if it had more information on Fenton's Hobnail pattern. This pattern is often wrongly identified with other similar hobnail glass pieces and it would help me immensely if the pictured pieces showed the manufacturer's number.
I heartily recommend this book to collectors and dealers.

Good Overview.......2001-11-23
This book is a great start and a nice overview of glassware from this era. Anyone collecting glass from these three decades knows that one book just cannot possibly capture it all, but this reference offers a great sweeping presentation. For collectors with large volumes of glassware, you won't go wrong with this book.
disappointed buyer.......2001-07-24
I bought this book without going to a bookstore to preview it. The only reason I wanted the book was for the peanut butter glasses on the cover. Only after searching through the book did I check inside the cover to find out that the Big Top peanut butter water tumblers were not featured in this book. I felt this was very deceiving of the author and although there are a lot of pictures of glassware, those pictures can be found in many other books.
collector's choice.......2001-03-20
the book is very helpful in reconizing and the value of many collector's dreams it has a lot of photo's that is also very helpful.the price was very reasonable,oh and i recived it in 2 day's.not bad...
glassware 40's,50's 0's.......2000-08-01
I just bought this book and the pictures are great and very detail. Gave a good amount of info about the company. Only thing I would like to see done is I have a problem knowing what the pieces are. It would be helpful if the were numbered so you could identify them easier. Would buy more book from this author.
Another home run for Gene Florence.......1999-12-22
Numerous glass companies from the "good old days" are represented in this edition and this IS another "must have" for the serious Anchor-Hocking, Fire-King and EAPC collectors to carry around with them in the car! Most importantly the photography is, as with all of Florence's books, beautiful and extremely color accurate. Price guidelines are updated and in tune with prices at the auctions. You don't even have to be a glassware collector to enjoy this book, it would make an excellent gift to someone's mom!
Book Description
Forty different hand-embroidery stitches, plus a host of creative ideas for using them, generate a range of amazing textures that will delight anyone who enjoys needlework. In what will clearly become a classic of the craft, Jan Beaney analyzes in detail the eye-catching effects that an embroiderer can achieve through the use of different background fabrics, unusual threads, and various needles. She asks questions such as “Can the stitch be worked in circles?” and “Can it be worked upside down?” and illustrates some of the possible answers. All the orthodox methods of working a canvas are discarded; unique, original techniques reign, and the colorful photos show the wonderful results.
Customer Reviews:
An embroidery book with NO color photos?.......2005-03-20
First of all, this is a reprint of a 1985 book, which should be clearly stated in its description. Secondly, have you ever seen an embroidery book without a single color photo? And with hardly any explanation of stitches? The entire book consists of black-and-white photos of different embroidery stitches in use in finished works. The book has scant text, most of it descriptions such as "Blocks of detached buttonhole worked in thick, thin, shiny and matt threads," which might be helpful if the photos were in color and you could see the difference. The book also has such "useful" suggestions as "Try working the stitch very tightly or in a loose manner."
Jan Beaney is a master but this 20-year-old book is an anachronistic dinosaur compared to the newer books available, including Jan Beaney's own Stitch Magic and her series of booklets published by Gemini Press.
I'm going to return this book, as I find it of no use at all.
An interesting design book.......2004-07-26
Stitches: New Approaches is a reprint of a book published in 1985. It is not intended to be a comprehensive stitch dictionary, but rather, a guide to what can be done with a stitch and some imagination. Each stitch has a large number of photographs, all in black and white. I would have loved to have seen the original works in color, but the black and white images focus on the stitch as well as the texture.
There is also advice on developing a design, starting from sketching. This is intended as a design text, so there are no patterns included. The goal of this book seems to be to provide a solid base on which to develop a stitched design.

Customer Reviews:
Contrasts and highlights a variety of elegant homes, from restored Mexican adobes to Victorian farmhouses.......2005-10-12
Author Kathryn Masson is a native Californian with access to some of the finest private homes and gardens in the area: Sonoma Valley Style: At Home In California's Wine Country pairs lovely color photos by Steven Brooke of both exteriors and interiors with Masson's feature of wine country homes and weekend retreats. Each home receives descriptions of the homeowner's goals, collaborations between architects and builders, and review of unique design attributes and challenges. From a historic Craftsman farmhouse to a 21st century interpretation of Arts and Crafts style, Sonoma Valley Style contrasts and highlights a variety of elegant homes, from restored Mexican adobes to Victorian farmhouses.
High Quality Writing/Photography/Printing.......2005-08-26
Sonoma Valley is not far from it's better known neighbor Napa Valley. What that really means is that it's not nearly as crowded with tourists. Still prime wine growing country the first vinyards date from the middle 1800's. It also seems that wine people tend to not be poor. The houses from the old vinyards are classical and elegant. The houses from the new vinyards are not bad either.
In this book you'll see a lot of kitchens with Viking type stovetops. There aren't many stoves from Sears purchased second hand. The book is a description of some of the more elegant houses in Sonoma Valley. It is profusely photographed by Steven Brooke an architectural photographer of reknown. His works include books on Rome, Jerusalem, Savannah, Napa and others. His pictures have a warm, creamy look that I find very inviting. The description that goes with the houses combines descriptive information with history and tales of the people who buile/remodeled them.
The book is about what you would expect of a coffee table book on a region: high quality pictures, high quality writing, high quality printing.
Book Description

Customer Reviews:
Very dissapointing.......2006-07-19
I read every book relating to Interior Design, 2nd homes, country homes and cottages. The photos in this book were way too dark and the type was way too small.
You need to have this book.......2001-07-16
You need to have this book if you need to take mini-vacations away from your stressful routine. This is a wonderful book. Beautiful design, beautiful photos, excellent narrative. Of my 100+ design/decorating books, this is in my top 5 favorites, a position it has held for over 2 years. Like another reviewer, I also appreciate knowing the homeowners' names. Sometimes I see their homes showcased in other books published after this one, with different photo angles, or perhaps updated accessories, and I feel like I'm keeping in touch with old friends.
Wonderfully eclectic.......2000-04-08
This is perhaps my favorite interior design book. Each space featured has a warm, unique and personal style that is not usually seen in the typical glossy interior coffee table books. Many of the homes are vacation or weekend cottages but they all share a feeling of great comfort and individual charm. I not only enjoy the beautiful photographs but the text reveals the personality of the owners and how the spaces reflect their lives. "California Cottages" brings a refreshing view of eclectic, somewhat bohemian living spaces that feel intimate and real. It's also nice to have a West coast perspective among the many interior design/style books that tend to favor East coast locales.
great book with beautiful photography.......1999-08-12
I highly recommend this book if you like the relaxed, and simply elegant cottage look.
A BOOK TO LOOK AT OVER AND OVER AGAIN!.......1999-02-25
I bought this book on a whim about two years ago and thought it would be like most of the decorating books I own. I would skim through it, read it, then put it away to take up space on my bookshelf. Not so! The book sits on my coffee table in my small, adorable NYC apartment, which I rented after being inspired by the homes in this book. I have read every word in this book at least three times and feel like I know the owners of each of the homes pictured. My favorites surprisingly change from time to time as I spot things I never noticed before. I recommend this book for anyone to whom his home is his cottage. It's wonderful.
Amazon.com
True to the sense of bounty and calm that the California wine regions convey, Diane Dorrans Saeks writes, "Wine Country life is private, peaceful, undisturbed. Rural bliss soothes the mind. The Wine Country encourages simple wonder and gratitude." The inhabitants of the idyllic properties presented in California Wine Country must feel grateful indeed. This unbelievably seductive book of heavenly hideaways is divided into five sections: "Classic," "Poetic," "Rustic," "Collectors," and "Weekends." The Santa Ynez, Russian River, and Alexander Valley regions are explored, as well as the more well-known Napa and Sonoma areas.
Saeks sought out creative people--artists and art dealers, designers, restaurateurs--whose houses range from a splendid Venetian villa near Calistoga to a 12-by-16-foot tent (furnished with antiques) on the edge of a peaceful Sonoma lake. The interiors are magazine-perfect (not a cell phone or fax machine in sight) and true to the prevailing architecture, whether angular and austere or funky adobe. There is a Mediterranean-inspired lusciousness in every photograph: grapes spill from the vines covering a patio, rambler roses cover a wooden gate, and doorways invariably open onto hillside vistas complete with blue sky. The directory at the book's end includes design and furnishings stores, as well as bookstores with good design sections, kitchen equipment stores, and restaurant, hotel, and winery recommendations.
Book Description
The first book to celebrate Wine Country lifestyle and interiors, California Wine Country offers an intimate tour of the ease and elegance that prospers amidst the vineyards and lush hillsides of the California wine-growing regions. Best-selling style writer Diane Dorrans Saeks walks the personal, memorable, and inspiring homes and hideaways of more than twenty-five Wine Country homeowners -- including an apple orchardist, a painter, a chef, an architect, and a gardener -- as they enjoy the seasonal splendor of outdoor dining, vine-covered vistas, sun-dappled interiors, and the spectacular surroundings of a region where lifestyle marries landscape. One of the most popular travel destinations on the West Coast, the Sonoma-Napa countryside is esteemed for its natural beauty and casually luxurious way of life. Throughout the region, and from the Anderson Valley to the vineyards of Santa Barbara, uniquely decorated homes are treasured for their architecture, seclusion, and unparalleled setting. Saeks visits nearly thirty such houses, including a renovated farmhouse and barn; a rustic family home amidst a walnut orchard; and a dreamy lakeside "tent" home in Sonoma. With more than two hundred beautiful color photographs, California Wine Country brilliantly captures the spirit and flavor of the Wine Country way of life.
Customer Reviews:
Nice start - but barely a beginning.......2003-09-06
Ms. Saeks did a reasonable job, but the book is close to worthless if you want to design your house in a recognizable California Wine Country style. Katya and I suggest developing a color palette from the book, but after tens of hours of studying it we can not determine a quantifiable style. Consider this book as a raw first start; a survey of modest importance. The interiors are all over the map. The only commonality is their location in California. Worth buying - yes, but only to understand the diversity possible. Is a more serious study necessary - yes. California wine country is a combination of Tuscan, Provencal, and Spanish Colonial/Early California, with Asian influences. Themes and moods vary. Pretty much freestyle designing. However, certain rules will give you a recognizable style. We're working on it.
- Jim and Katya Preston
Beautiful.......2001-07-29
I collect decorating books (I'm obsessed with them!) and this is my absolute favorite! It's sitting on my coffee table and I look at it again and again; I wish I could find more like it. We have recently purchased/remodled another house and this book was the inspiration for many of the things I incorporated into this house.
An architect's opinion of this book.......2000-05-05
This book is a beautiful presentation of Interior (and outdoor) Design, but little true architecture. Most of the profiled homes appear as sets in a film and seem unrealistic as full time residences. As an architect, I will admit that most are wonderful, humanly scaled spaces. I'm not sure why the wine country is profiled-- other than the budgets are fat there. Overall, the book is worth the price.
IMAGINE LIVING IN THE WINE COUNTRY.......1999-08-03
Hi, I am the author. The Napa Valley, Sonoma, Santa Barbara, Santa Ynez...they are hot now. Everyone dreams of living in the Wine Country. The pages of this book will set you dreaming more...and imagining a trip to relax, go wine tasting, perhaps look at real estate...and certainly to dine at The French Laundry. (See Chef Thomas Keller's kitchen in this book.)
Book Description
With over 30,000 copies in print in hardcover, this lavishly illustrated volume is now available in a beautiful paperback edition. Over 200 full-color photographs showcase the work of such acclaimed architects and interior designers as Joseph Esherick, Frank Gehry, Michael Taylor, and Ellinor McGuire, all accompanied by historical commentary and detailed descriptions of 31 of California's most exquisite residences. Entertaining, informative, and inspirational California Country is a superb resource for designers and homeowners, or anyone who appreciates gracious living in country setting.
Customer Reviews:
Worthless Reading and Information.......2006-03-19
I was highly disappointed in the content of this book. I was expecting so much more. About the only interesting portion of the book was the section on the Mondavi home. Other than that, it stinks. This is not even worthy of coffee table book status. My suggestion: Save your money and don't purchase it; instead treat yourself to a coffee at the bookstore.
A Classic look at California Country.......2000-05-12
This is an updated paperback version of one of the first decorating books I ever purchased. Cool California rooms with styles that range from contemporary to more classic looks. Even though this book is several years old I still go back to it and use it as a resource. Overall I would call the main look shown... Casual Elegance.

Book Description
In 1775 Prince Marcantonio Borghese IV and the architect Antonio Asprucci embarked upon a decorative renovation of the Villa Borghese. Initially their attention focused on the Casino, the principal building at the villa, which had always been a semi-public museum. By 1625 it housed much of
the Borghese's outstanding collection of sculpture. Integrating this statuary with vast baroque ceiling paintings and richly ornamented surfaces, Asprucci created a dazzling and unified homage to the Borghese family, portraying its legendary ancestors as well as its newly born heir.
In this book, Carole Paul reads the inventive decorative program as a set of exemplary scenes for the education of the ideal Borghese prince. Her wide-ranging essay also situates the Villa Borghese among the sumptuous palaces and suburban villas of Rome's collectors of antiquities and outlines the
renovated Casino's pivotal role in the historic transition from the princely collection to the public museum. Rounding out this volume is a catalog of the Getty Research Institute's fifty-nine drawings for the refurbishing of the Villa Borghese and Alberta Campitelli's discussion of sketches for
the short-lived Museo di Gabii, the Villa's other antiquities museum.
