Book Description
Book Description How to make beer, wine, liqueurs, cider and moonshine whiskey. The author dusts off over 30 years of experience to tell you how it's done. He not only tells how to make darned near any kind of beer, wine, liqueur and whiskey you can imagine, he also tells you how to make the equipment to do it with. Ever wondered how a still is made? There are 8 types illustrated in this book and though it's illegal to build or possess a still, the illustrations are so complete, you could easily do it! This book includes plans and operating instructions from underground moonshiner manuals used in Mid East oil fields. Some are built with components found in most home kitchens. From moonshine, homebrew, wine and liqueur recipes, to stills, make your own cappers, kegs, scales and even a malt factory from an old freezer, it's all here!
Easy to read and humorous, this book entertains you with Alaskan tales and bootlegger's lore while you learn to make everything from beer and blossom wines, to horse turd whiskey and bathtub gin. If you could buy only one "make your own" book for the rest of your life, this is it. It's like getting a whole shelf of books for the price of one!

Beer, Wine and booze book.......2007-09-13
I wanted to like this bokk and I have used it's content many times over and it works. I was a bit dissapointed in the fact the book refers to something like "You can easily make your own yest culture to save money and we will show you how later in the book" forget it you will never find it.
When it comes to recipes on beer even how to malt and make your own gear it is great. For the wine section a lot of very interesting receipes there. For the moonshine, well let's put it like that, there is very few receipes on moonshine, there is a lot of still ideas and they are a good starting point. If you want to just give it a try you should search for "the amazing still" on google and built that first, it takes you 5 minutes to set up and dismantled to no incriminating parts in two minutes, There is little about carbonizing but instead they go the distill 4 times approach, which might be good but it is very time consuming so the most common approach which is carbonizing is not covered at all. So all in all it is a good book on the subject but is lacking a bit information to be a bible really.
ok,,, but title is misleading.......2007-08-06
this is a good resource for a beginner beer or wine maker,,, but is very light on construction and operation of a still for "ethanol".
Fantastic book!.......2007-06-18
This is absolutely the best homebrew, winemaking, and distilling book I've ever read. You can easily tell that the writer has many years of practical experience, from living in remote parts of Alaska, where making your own is the difference between have and have not.
The recipes are simple, cheap, and natural. You'll save so much money and time. I highly, highly recommend this book.
Great Book.......2007-01-18
What a great book - easy to read but very informative. While I would recommend reading Papazian for beer, the wine and liquor sections are very useful. Unfortunately, primarily covers "thin mash" liquors, which are made with sugar, and is a bit lacking on all-grain. Still, it helps you learn the procedures and concepts behind brewing and distillation from which you can experiment. Contains many recipes for beer, wine, whisky. A good read and introduction to distillation.
Great read, all-around fun.......2007-01-16
On a lark, my wife purchased for me a home brewing kit. Wanting to learn more about the subject, I decided to do some reading. The book's title is what brought me to it, but the content is what kept me reading it. It is funny and practical. It is by no means the decisive authority on home-brew, but its all around nature from real-life experiences makes it a good read. Despite the name, most of the book focuses on home beer and wine making (both legal) with just a little devoted to the theory and possible practical side of home distilling (illegal in the U.S.). As I continue to try out new things in home brewing, I find myself referring back to this book time and time again. If you have a few hours free one afternoon, and are every slightly interested in the subject, I suggest this as a great place to start.
Customer Reviews:
Yeah, I loved it too.......2007-08-31
I want to express my deep thanks and love to all who wrote nice things about this book. I was the acquiring editor of it, and the concept was my idea. Three months after making a pitch to Universal Studios, a massive box filled with all the NX scripts arrived at my office. From those came this book. With the invaluable participation of author Ellis Weiner and my two favorite cookbook authors (who could not, for contractual reasons, be identified, but who created all the recipes), a fun idea I had for a book about one of my favorite shows came to fruition. Seriously, in my fifteen years of working in publishing, this project was the most fun I ever had. I'm so thrilled to know that you guys liked it as much as I did. (I also did Chris-in-the-Morning, which I also love, but, you know, that was a no brainer--anybody could have figured that'd be a success!).
Fun ... and tasty.......2006-03-31
If you loved the show, this is a must. Allegedly written by Ruth-Anne Miller, Cicely's sage and owner of the general store, the book contains wry observations on the folks and life in Cicely, memories of the show and the food served and discussed on it. Surprisingly, the recipes are good - very good ... at least the ones I'd tried. I'm especially fond of the eggplant parmegian recipe. Guess I'll have to take better care of the book now that it's collectible!!
Fabulous........2005-10-26
I must say, I bought this because I thought it seemed like a fun gimmick and I liked the show, but the recipes are outstanding. I grew up in test kitchens and I can say that the lamb stew is the best I've ever had-- great borscht, too. Lightfeather Duncan's mashed potatoes are the hit of Thanksgiving... but heed their warning about not using the red horseradish, as pink potatoes clash with holiday decor. Eggs Florentine recipe is also noteworthy; love the pungency of the gruyere.
A must have for northern exposure fans.......2004-08-30
This cookbook is so much fun and a must for any northern exposure fan. All the recipes you heard mentioned from Adam and the zabaglione he whipped up for Eve on their first date to the Cassoulet Chris had at the monastery. It has a little intro to each recipe done in character by the character. There are simple funny recipes like Joel's Jell-O and Marilynn's potatoes and more detailed ones like Adam's and Maurice's. A fun read and walk down memory lane for any northern exposure fan.
The best cookbook.......2003-09-19
I'm a really big NX fan, and this cookbook was great- interesting recipies, and ever better quotes! I loved the stories behind each recipie and the comments Ruth-Anne makes. This is a great book, even for people who don't like NX.
Book Description
A classic collection of over 1,400 Alaskan recipes to delight those who love the North's traditional fare.

helpful and relevant.......2006-11-05
As a lifelong Alaskan, this book contained recipes that I've been searching for, but have never found. Yay!! It covers a variety of recipes - from blueberries to Walrus - and it would make a great gift for friends in and out of Alaska.
Cooking Alaskan.......2005-10-17
Bought this for my daughter and she loved it. I've gone to her home unexpectedly and there it was propped open on her coffee table with markers in pages, so I know she is reading it.
Best Fish Cookbook Ever.......2003-10-18
This cookbook was a gift, and what a gift. My husband is an avid outdoorsman and the great, no fuss recipes in this book are delicious. Buy it and enjoy!
Simply The Best!!.......2002-08-17
I have owned more than one copy of this amazingly informative and very complete book! (I typically have had to replace it after friends and family from the lower 48 have visited my Alaska home.) This book provides an excellent selection of tradtional and non-traditional recipes as well as fascinating information on Alaska.
A must have for anyone who lives in Alaska, dreams of Alaska or collects cookbooks.
A must-have for every Alaskan!.......2001-10-23
As a new Alaska resident, I am so glad I stumbled upon this cookbook. My husband is an avid hunter and fisherman, and I love to garden and pick berries. Cooking Alaskan has recipes for all of our wild game, water foul, fish, seafood, herbs, vegetables, berries, and more! If you can hunt it, catch it, grow it, or pick it, there is a recipe in this cookbook for you. A majority of the recipes (if not all) are submitted by tried-and-true Alaskans, not fancy chefs, so they are easy to follow and use ingredients that can be found in any supermarket.
The best feature of Cooking Alaskan is perhaps not the recipes, but all of the extra information contained inbetween. Tips on harvesting, butchering, cleaning, and storing Alaska foods; lessons on identifying poisonous plants and berries; and antecdotes and stories of Alaskan culture are practical, useful, and most of all, entertaining. Cooking Alaskan is much more than just a cookbook!
Book Description
A delicious mix of recipes and vignettes from one of Alaska's internationally famous wilderness lodges.

Delicious!.......2000-12-08
Living in Alaska I am drawn to try various Alaska cook books and this one is outstanding. There is an awesome recipe for "Pepper Relish" that my husband and his friends beg me to make. In fact friends have bought there own copies of the book becouse I wont loan it out. I've got sticky notes all throught the book with my own reviews and temtations! Its Simple to read and easy to understand recipes. These arent the copied versions of foods you have had before, and she writes a jounal throughout the book to make you feel as if your a guest at her lodge. I hope to find more of her recipes! You will love this very interesting and well written cook book!
An excellent read and a good cookbook........1999-01-15
A friend of mine gave me this cookbook when she came back from Alaska and it is one of the best cookbooks that I have read. The recipes are all very good but the stories of Chef Dixon and her life in Alaska is wonderful. Even if you don't cook you will love this book. Kirsten Dixon seems to me as being a cross between Julia Child and Jack London. She is someone you should watch for.
Customer Reviews:
Creative ways to serve halibut!.......2006-05-28
No longer will I be at a loss for what to do with my halibut! This cookbook serves up over 200 recipes that prove fish does not equal boring! The recipes are organized by type of dish: Soups and appetizers, and main courses. You'll find all the standard fare like halibut chowder, halibut in beer batter, halibut cutlets, broiled halibut with vegetables, etc., but you'll also find exotic tastes from around the globe, such as halibut kedgeree, halibut hawaii, halibut with Banana, spicy halibut creole, easy cioppino, thai halibut pudding, japanese skewered halibut, and even something called muchli moolu, which features coconut milk. While I can't vouch for the absolute authenticity of the recipes from other places, I can say that the recipes I've tried are delicious and feasible for the home cook.
I took off one star because the recipes could be better organized, and one of the recipes I made was a bit bland. However, the spiral binding is a great feature that allows the book to lay open.

This book was quite helpful. It had a variety of information and touched on a lot of subjects and areas depending on your quest.
A Great Resource.......2007-03-09
This book is really well written and practical. It is one of the most specific guides I have read just for starting a scrapbooking business. It answered a lot of questions for me!
fluff.......2006-01-24
I read this book cover to cover in under an hour. It had a few good ideas. But save your hour researching online instead where you'll find the same info and then some. The table of contents is useful for brainstorming, but this is not a comprehensive book for a serious entrepreneur.
Clear and Concise.......2002-03-27

From the retail store to teacher Steligo gives you information on how to choose the right scrapbooking opportunity for you.
