5 out of 5 stars From Boneshakers to BMX.......2001-09-27

In 1988, when living in China, I bought a Shanghai-built Yongjiu ("Forever") bicycle. Reputed to be a copy of a 1936 Raleigh, or a 1938 Legnano, depending on which expert it was, the Yongjiu is clearly from another era: massive steel tubing, rod-operated brakes, a wide, brown sort-of-leather saddle with lots of springs underneath, one speed. It was almost brand new and very inexpensive, so I thought I was buying a bit of history and a nifty souvenir. It looked great, with its deep black enamel finish and chrome flourishes. And it had a sturdy rack, suitable for carrying furniture, or ducks to the market.

After returning to Canada, I had the opportunity to ride the Yongjiu to work once when my regular commuter bike, an elderly Gitane ten-speed, required some major repairs. The five kilometer trip was interminable. The bicycle was awkward and ponderous. It was undergeared for load-carrying, meaning I had to spin at much too fast for comfort. But the bike was so heavy that even speed bumps took on Matterhorn dimensions. The brakes did not appear to slow what little forward progress there was, although I could hear them working. And I had to ride with my feet pointed outwards to prevent my knees from being whacked by the handlebars on every revolution of the crank. And everyone at the office who saw the Yongjiu was enchanted by it.

This fascination for old bicycles seized Pryor Dodge at an early age. His epiphany was seeing Cantinflas ride a high-wheeler in the film "Around the World in 80 Days" and the result has been many years of collecting old bicycles and related paraphernalia. And this wonderful book, which traces the development of the bicycle from Baron Karl Friedrich Drais von Sauerbronn's Laufmaschine ("Running Machine") of 1817 to the velocipede, with its cranked front wheel, to the elegant but precarious high-wheeler and, finally, the safety bicycle of 1886. The last thirty pages are devoted to the bicycle in the Age of the Automobile, but you can tell Mr. Dodge's heart is not really into relating the story of the BMX or mountain bike.

No, Pryor Dodge loves bicycles from before 1900, when an inventive madness swept the world and the bicycle took so many whimsical forms. One can savour the details of the 1884 Kangaroo geared high-wheeler, the steam-powered velocipede (!), the bamboo bicycle or the bizarre Coventry Rotary Tricycle, whose appearance defies description but which is beautifully illustrated in one of the many superb photos that grace this book. The text, which is somewhat overwhelmed by the quality of the images, is full of interesting facts, conveyed in a clear and attractive style. The photos of bicycles are supplemented by images of posters, medals, club uniforms and other amazing things.

For anyone with any feeling for bicycles (or gorgeous books), "The Bicycle," which has been published in at least three languages, is a must, and a steal at the price.

And on page 193 is a photo of people in Shanghai riding to work on their Yongjius.

5 out of 5 stars The most finely illustrated history of cycling ever produced.......1998-11-21

            What the critics say:

Derek Roberts, founding member of the Southern Veteran-Cycle Club (now Veteran-Cycle Club), England, editor and principal contributor of 'The Boneshaker' for its first 21 years ('The Boneshaker' is the first periodical to be devoted to cycling history):

"...you have produced a work that every student of cycling history must buy. It is the coffee-table book to end all coffee-table books, and it has the merit of being a work of art as well as a reference manual. I congratulate you on your fine achievement...I shall obviously have to have a special coffee-table made to hold it."

Les Bowerman, editor of 'The Boneshaker':

"It is a magisterial view of all aspects of cycle history, and I strongly recommend it to all interested in the general history of cycles and cycling. Forget the high price - you must have the book,....this is the cycle history publishing event of the decade."

Nick Clayton, Honorary editor of 'The Boneshaker':

"...the most comprehensive and correct treatment of the subject to date."

The Guardian, Manchester (UK), February 27, 1997:

"Pryor Dodge...has combined what is unquestionably the most finely illustrated history of cycling ever produced with a text which is both erudite and elegant. Dodge not only reminds us of the curious paths and byways the bicycle has travelled down; he points a way forward by documenting the bicycle renaissance of recent years."

London Review of Books, April 24, 1997:

"The Bicycle is full of delights....adds up to what used to be called a wonder book....close-ups of clean, shining mechanisms can have an elegance all their own..."

Bicycle Culture 11, York (UK), December 1996:

"This is the most sumptuous book ever on the history of cycling. The author borrows generously from his astonishing collection of historical illustrations: revealing images not previously known even to cycle historians.  That so many of them are in colour is particularly delightful. The many finely-lit studio photographs make old, worn machines look truly beautiful, from the pitted and scratched Levocyclette of 1905 on the front cover, to the two-page spreads devoted to a Velocipede pedal detail and to the Simpson lever chain."

            VELO, 1996 Fall/Winter Catalogue:

"This book is nothing short of the finest cycling history/picture book ever published...This book is a treasure for any cycling enthusiast....Outstanding color photographs."

This book is a must for anyone considering the restoration of an antique motorcycle. You will be shown strange motorcycle technology that you never thought existed! Jeff Clew does a great job in explaining what manufacturers chose to do why they did it to your bike. You have to give the author credit; explaining British Bike logic is hard to do!

Sometimes the logic is there, and sometimes the logic is lost, but the author makes that point too, and will tell you when and why something was better. If your own motorcycle has a particularly odd bit of technology integrated into a broken part, you're often stuck with what you've got. Jeff Clew explains how to go about setting it right, and points you in the right direction for a top-notch restoration.

The book does not cover any one project from start to finish, and rightly so. That is not the intent. Doing a step-by-step restoration of one bike would actually take away from this book. It would ignore other bikes out there and the reader would lose the great overview that this book describes so well.

So, go elsewhere if you want someone to tell you exactly how to restore your 1914 Douglas from basket to beauty. It will instead tell you what kind of trouble to expect during a restoration project, and help you get a clearer picture of what is necessary to rebuild a classic motorcycle. Sadly, some people just buy a set of Whitworth wrenches and think they can have at it! What they really need is a book like this to give them a dose of reality. Motorcycle restoration is extremely time consuming and takes a lot of patience. This book serves two purposes: It is a beautiful overview of the subject and it is also fair warning for what you might be getting yourself into.

5 out of 5 stars The Icon of Motorcycles and the dream of young men! .......2007-04-09

There are few brand names in the world that provoke such an image of power, rebellion, and individual freedom as does the name "Harley-Davidson." This book takes us on a reading journey with the big boys on Harley's to Sturgis, South Dakota and on the road across America. I was already imagining myself as this rebel in black leather riding into town as I looked at the photos of those bikers cruising down the main street. The truth is that today's bikers are regular folks and not much like those gangsters that Marlon Brando portrayed in "The Wild One" many long years ago.

There is a certain mystical quality to the lore and myth that surrounds Harley bikes and their riders. This book picks up on some of that powerful energy. The photos really capture the beauty and artistry of these machines. What is nice about this book for younger people is that it does not glorify "The Hell's Angels" image and delivers something much more family friendly and enriching. The text is good at getting the reader little pieces of information and history. It makes a great marriage to the colorful photos which are abundant inside the book.

A good read for young men of all ages. Should be of greatest interest to teenage boys but it appeals to the young at heart!

I personally recommend this book for all young male readers and old dreamers like myself! A must read book!

                1 out of 5 stars Panhead Maintenance.......2005-07-19

Solid manual , most detailed and precise one available, very good
for all kind of day to day maintenance as well as for complete rebuild.
Easy to use needs some basic technical understanding but you don't
                need to be a professional.

Excellent!! A must have book for anyone owning a panhead.

5 out of 5 stars YOU NEED IT.......2001-04-15

If you own an original, or if you're building a 1948-1965 Tedd Cycle (V-Twin) Replica, you'll need every piece of written material you can get your hands on. This service manual covers areas that our manual does not (i.e., Linkert carburetors, transmissions, forks, brakes, "mousetraps" and 1965 Electra-Glides), and more in depth maintenance procedures than the OEM 1959-69 Service Manual.

5 out of 5 stars This is a maintenance book!.......1999-01-29

This is a Clymer maintenace book for Harley Panheads. It is a very good book on care and feeding of panheads, but the Amazon description makes it look like the history of pans. One good good thing is that there is a section of the book which describes the proper paint and features for particular year pans. Useful for restores.

                5 out of 5 stars Beginning Success.......2002-05-05

I was surprised this book had such a low rating as I thought it was wonderful. I like the variety of designs, the size of the finished squares, and the hundreds of combinations that can be achieved. I made a small house quilt using the variety of houses and the members of my quilt guild loved it. I think book sales went up as a result. Try this book for simple and successful blocks. You are only limited by you imagination.

I bought this AFTER some of the others (such as, "Favorite Fundation Pieced Minis") and therefore I was disappointed. Since this was written, foundation techniques have improved. Money is better spend on Doak's later work or other, more recent books on foundation piecing. (If you haven't tried foundation piecing, though, do yourself a favor and so - it lets those of us with minimal talent look very good!)

                Book Description

This celebration of Victoriana invites readers to rediscover the sublime pleasures of that singularly opulent era. Lavish, ornate, and elegant, Victorian style was driven by the adage that “nothing should ever be done halfway.” Focusing on the details that characterize the Victorian aesthetic—from symmetrical arrangements to layered lace cover-ups—this beautifully illustrated guidebook encourages today’s decorators to embrace the bold stylings of a more extravagant age. Replete with suggestions for introducing royal touches to even the most modest home, the book includes directions for specific projects as well as a definitive directory of resources for Victorian decorating.

4 out of 5 stars Romantic and Victorian ..........2007-03-12

The photos in this book are lovely and the flower arrangements are glorious. I quickly realized that British Victorian style in my tropical climate would be too cluttered, too crowded and too full of heavy, upholstered furniture. It would be wonderful in a cold, blustery climate. Nevertheless, I got hundreds of images and ideas that I can tone down and lighten up for my home.

The "easy-to-make projects" however, are totally unrealistic - how many people still know how to crochet and do tatting and have the time? Maybe the next time I'm stranded on a desert island, but nowadays .....Cuting down a bureau to make a mantle? Making a Victorian picnic basket? The Christmas decorations and foods, however, were wonderful (even if you'd never have time to do them unless you started in late September ...)- the photos look like Ebenezer and Tiny Tim will be coming through the door momentarily. Beautiful book, especially if taken in small doses.
