No More bland recipes.......2003-02-07
This book was given to me in paperback, and I literally wore the pages out of it's binder. I love "Southern Living" and "Junior Leage" type cookbooks, but this book by far gives more recipes that are unsolicited requests from friends who have tried it's secrets. These dishes are "different" and extremely "tasty". Not Bland! Try it's Poultry and vegetable sections for dishes that are uncommon and full of flavor. The only room for improvement this book has, is that it needs photo's to help entise it's readers.
If you can read, you'll be a gourmet chef with this one!.......2002-11-22
As a bride, this one saved my cooking life 30 years ago! Easy to read, great introduction into the use of spices and seasonings, and the results were and still are always superb. If only the publisher had had the binding made as well as the contents. Mine, too, is falling apart but is, apparently, irreplaceable. I'll never give it up!
Duct Tape and an Elastic band.......2000-06-09
This book is outstanding. My dad has used it every night for as long as I can remember. I am here today to try and replace it with a newer maybe more modern version, for ours is a bit lets say, "weathered". The spine has been taped three times. Right now it is being held together with an elastic band. The pages are torn and yellow and smell of oregano and allspice. I am trying to acquire another one for father's day, sadly it is out of print. I hope it's replacement has not changed since 1984. I recommend this book (if you can get your hands on one) to every cuisiniere. Wish me luck.
Most comprehensive use of a variety of spices!.......1999-09-15
I have loved this cookbook for decades! It was one of the first cookbooks I bought as a newlywed in 1970. My first copy was a paperback that soon fell apart at the spine. Nevertheless, a good friend was anxious to take this tattered copy after I bought the new improved version, a spiral book that in turn needs to be replaced. The recipes endure, but the binding does not. I regret that I never bought the regular hardbound copy and hope that I can find one somewhere, somehow. I want to add another copy of this cherished cookbook, preferably hardbound, to my collection of several hundred culinary volumes. Two of my three sons have moved out and would also like their own copies. Family favorites from this cookbook include Dill Macaroni Salad, Paprika Chicken, Macaroni and Cheese.
The most excellent cookbook available!.......1998-08-23
As a gourmet chef, I have seen, read and used thousands of cookbooks however, none compare to this little gem. I received this cookbook from my mother who first bought this edition in 1969, and used it with our family as we grew. Now that I have my own family, I reference this book constantly for good, wholesome, solid dishes. If you can find a good copy, buy it at any cost and hold it in your family for as many generations as possible!!
Customer Reviews:
kind of a cheat.......2007-08-10
I like the recipes in this book for being realistic for the average kitchen and fairly unpretentious. There's nothing too exotic here, just good solid combinations of flavors. However there's little in the way of soups or sides or salads, mostly just different ways of handling protein. Also, if you are hoping to reproduce the meal you had at the restaurant, abandon that hope, because these have either been dumbed-down or changed slightly from what the house actually serves.
Mccormick & Schmick's Seafood Restaurant Cookbook.......2007-07-16
McCormick & Schmick's Seafood Restaurant Cookbook is a sort of seafood encyclopaedia of recipes. This book contains everything appetizers, soup, and salads through sandwiches, pastas, and seafood classic dishes to recipes for fish, specialties, and grilled dishes. This book even includes dessert recipes.
Though not likely a cookbook that you will want to pull out to prepare the average family meal, this book will be an extremely valuable addition to anyone who loves a little seafood every now and then. Surprisingly, the recipes are pretty simple to make with the instructions being very easy to follow. However, these recipes do require fresh ingredients. Therefore, these dishes are probably best made for special occasions, a romantic meal, or just because you deserve a delicious treat when you have access to fresh seafood or fish. Alternately, go to McCormick & Schmick's Seafood Restaurant.
Seafood Lovers Rejoyce!.......2006-01-12
If you are a lover of seafood this is the book for you. Absolutely brimming over with detailed information about seafood, how to cook it, keep yourself safe eating it and just plain enjoying it. Chef King shares with the reader his recipes of seafood that are used in the famous "McCormick & Schmick's Seafood Restaurants," perhaps now you can enjoy these delicious meals at home.
We are given many recipes such as, Seafood Cocktails, Spenger's Fish Tacos, Apple Halibut and Grilled Rainbow Trout, to name only a few. This book is not stingy with its recipes and you will be amazed how many are shared with you and the concise and easy to following instructions for you to make these dishes.
You will also find a section on some mouth-watering deserts, such as, "Three Berry Cobbles," and "Deep-Dish Apple Pie." Hungry yet? The photos that I saw were bright and clear and certainly brought the food to light in a very visual way. All in all, for the seafood lover who would like to enjoy these wonderful meals at home, this cookbook is for you. Very well done.

Rare, out of print.......2007-01-18
From back cover: This is a cookbook with romance. It traces the colorful story of spices -- pepper, mustard, cloves, nutmeg, mace, and the rest -- from the dawn of history to modern times. And it shows you how to use spices in your cooking for new taste and variety. Includes: How to use spices; special helps; recipes; spice index.
Highly recommended.

I said it in the title.
If you can get this book- and you are any kind of craftsman- you will love it. I wated a month or so- and it was worth the wait.

Not for the novice!.......2007-06-27
A very concise and detailed book, with many simple graphics but no photographs and certainly not of use to the novice who just wants to clean up and maintain a collection of old clocks.
you need this book.......2007-05-25
Excellent book!! Very detailed. It will require study, but is easily understood. And it's ALL in there- ftom nubie to expert. I've purchased 5 books, and this is the last one. I'll never need another.
hard to understand.......2005-12-17
Very difficult book to comprehend. Just about useless as an aid to repairing clocks. I think a lot of it has to do with the language gap between American English and what the people in Britain speak. I am sorry I wasted my money on this book.
Save your money.......2005-11-20
This book was a total waste of money for me. The UK English is nearly impossible to decipher at times. It is very difficult reading. This mihgt be a good book for experts but is worthless to the beginner. The author describes repair in detail, but assumes the reader knows all the technical terms being used without explaining them. The drawings are difficult to decipher. Photos would have been better. If you are a beginner looking for a good book to get started in clock repair, this isn't it!
Laurie who ?.......2002-04-12
I have to say I was impressed with this book. The opening chapter describes how to find clock faults; this might seem trivial until you come across a clock that has no obvious fault. Laurie takes you though some great practises for isolating a problem. Whilst (yes I'm a fellow Englishman) not a particularly entertaining book it covers many topics of clock theory in great depth. I would recommend this book for the enthusiastic novice thru to the hardened collector. For the casual clock novice, unless you have a sleeping problem, I would suggest finding some easier reading.
I hope this helps you in your decision ...

Book Description
All of the precise and delicate gears and levers in a clock can appear dizzying to the amateur, but this guide, with its wonderfully detailed diagrams, can clear things up. It covers the theory behind clock movement and design, including the particulars of escapements, pendulums, balance wheels, and even the sheet music for popular chimes. The American striking clock, the 400-day clock, and the alarm clock receive special attention. The in-depth information, including explanations of clock repairing terminology and details on the tools, materials, and supplies that are needed for success, will benefit even skilled enthusiasts.

Book Description
“Covers the fundamentals of shoemaking, including pictures, sidebars with flair...and great instructions for techniques. One after another, the approximately 30 patterns proceed—each one more appealing than the last—from an apple pie-color sandal to a Sante Fe-like desert sunrise moccasin. Templates appended.”—Booklist. “Excellent book.”—Quick & Easy Crafts.
Customer Reviews:
Worth buying directly from the author.......2007-09-09
From the book you learn to make simple flat to low-heeled shoes. Each shoe comes with a pattern and exact description how to enlarge it for your shoe size. The instructions are basic and not always easy to understand, but the book is a good primer. The book is out-of-print but available for $25 directly from the author over the Internet simpleshoemaking.com. The book is black and white, with color photographs on the cover and worth its price. It is in no way worth the ridiculous price asked by second-hand dealers.
I also recommend "Make Your Own Shoes" by Mary Wales Loomis, which shows how to make higher-heel elegant ladies' shoes from fabric on your sewing machine. And "Handmade Shoes for Men" by Laszlo Vass, which shows shoemaking in great color photographs, but has no patterns.
Looks good- impossible to follow.......2006-04-19
This book contains some very pretty pictures and cute useless information but when it come to actually using it the instructions that are provided on how to create a basic pattern and size the shoes you are making are almost impossible to follow! The instructions sometimes even refer you to further instructions ("see page 116" for example) that are not actually there! The book is well presented so it looks like everything should be in order but when you actually really try to put it into practice as I have tried to do (for two days of my holidays!) it just doesn't add up. I have read some other reviews that actually commend the book; the only explainations that I can think of for this is that: 1. the reviewers haven't actually tried following the instructions to make shoes, 2. they are relatives of the author and are trying to promote the book, 3. they have a completely different copy to the one I have.
An interesting and informative book!.......2003-06-25
I came across this book quite by accident, and what a happy accident it was! I haven't yet made any of the shoe projects in the book, but I have read through everything, and do feel that I will be able to achieve some good results with Sharon Raymond's instructions.
The tidbits of shoe trivia scattered throughout the book are truly delightful!
Surprising!.......2003-01-13
I bought this book thinking it would be a useful tool when creating shoes for stage productions. I didn't really think the end result would be "good enough" for everyday wear. But I was wrong.
This book is really pretty amazing. I would have thought a host of expensive and hard-to-find tools and materials would have been necessary to create "real" shoes, but that's not necessarily true, as laid out in this book. Sure, if you want leather shoes (as opposed to fabric), it will cost a little, but you can make one of the more simple designs in this book and not have to invest a lot of dough. The author even suggests taking the finished upper portion of your shoe to a shoe repair shop to have soles put on it...Sound wonderful to me, although I haven't tried to find a shop locally to see if that's really do-able.
At any rate, if you want to make serious shoes, this book is definitely for you. And if you just want costume shoes, you can take the basic principles found in this book and do that, too.
An updated book on an ancient craft.......2001-10-17
Go ahead - just TRY to find a book on hand-crafting sandals and shoes on a small scale that wasn't written before 1973. This is the first updated book I have found on the subject.
The book lays out in logical order the basics of leather, working with it, construction techniques and variety of projects that use those techniques in modular fashion.
The book is easy to follow, the project instructions are not cluttered with commentary, and are concise. This book is excellent for a beginner who has had no experience in making shoes and sandals at home, and does not assume a great knowledge in any one craft. Instructions as to what tools are needed, how to buy leather and findings, and finishing are all included. Willingness to try something new and a little time is all that is needed on your part. (plus a trip to the craft and leather stores!)
The kind of shoes and sandals presented in this book are suitable for most casual wear. The style of construction used doesn't lend itself well to what most people would consider business-like or formal shoes. They will be sturdy and if you construct them well, I see no reason why they wouldn't last as long as any commercially available shoe.
Although it is not stated in the book - all the projects are clearly designed for women. But the book shows you the basics of creating your own patterns. After all - feet are feet - no matter who they are on, so with a little creativity you can design your own patterns (and choose materials) that would compliment a man's outfit, with the instructions in this book.
One minor disapointment, the book does not have a project for strap sandals. However the author has a thoughtful website and sells several additional patterns (to be used with the techniques in this book) for sale at very minimal cost.
The author also includes some colorful trivia and history on shoes, througout the book.
Book Description
With more than 150 color photographs, comprehensive text, and extensive resource lists of recommended products, manufacturers, and retailers, Good Green Kitchens is a must-have-whether taking small steps to a green kitchen, or planning a thorough remodel. This newest book from green living advocate, Jennifer Roberts, is loaded with inspiration and information for creating a dream green kitchen. What makes a kitchen green? Good Green Kitchens shows that eco-friendly design is a continuum that's shaded from light to dark green. At the light green end are easy-to-do steps such as choosing less polluting paints or selecting energy-efficient appliances. At the darker green end are strategies like using certified or reclaimed wood, consciously choosing to simplify or downsize, or using the kitchen project as a launching point for greening the whole house. Good Green Kitchens gives the low-down on what's green and what's not when it comes to kitchen design. It includes: up-close profiles of beautiful, green kitchens and the people who created them; tips for environmentally responsible redecorating, remodeling, and building from the ground up; in-depth chapters on greener alternatives for floors, cabinets, countertops, and appliances; strategies for greening the whole house; tips for keeping costs in check; and much more.
Customer Reviews:
Best green kitchen resource.......2007-09-21
I found Good Green Kitchens to be an excellent resource. The information is comprehensive, unbiased, and clearly presented. It's also a great read and beautifully put together. The mix of reference information, case studies, and design tips works very well. I think that the quality of content is far better than most other home design books.
Good Green Kitchens.......2007-05-07
Anyone planning a "green" kitchen remodel will find this book very helpful.
Green or greenwash?.......2007-03-17
This book is not worth much of a review. Far from being "green" it's what I'd call "greenwash". It's for people with a spare $20,000 - $50,000 who want to feel good by what they BUY, but there is precious little to indicate that the kitchens pictured actually lead to living a green life. You can't buy more stuff to become green - that's an oxymoron. The first thing to DO to have a green kitchen is to reduce your ecological footprint by what you do and then build a kitchen around your genuinely green lifestyle. This book is based on the unstated assumption that you first dream of living a green life, then you drool over plans and then you buy lots of stuff and that somehow makes you green. Sorry - this might fool your friends, it might even fool yoursdelf, but it won't fool the planet. Almost anyone can reduce their ecological footprint by a change in behaviour far more than they could by following the examples here. Any book on green design that features pictures of buildings, rooms and kitchens without people in them living a green lifestyle is - by my reckoning - just another example of greenwash. I give it two stars rather than one because there are a few ideas here that you might be able to adapt to support a green life. But you'll need to go elsewhere to learn about ecological footprint, environmental load and living green. There is one-third of a page on "environmental costs" when such a book should feature this at its core and the rest of the book should be about building a life and a kitchen around this principle.
Green, but top of the line, Kitchens.......2006-09-30
What? Yet another book on kitchens? And what does GREEN mean in terms of a kitchen, certainly not the color?
San Francisco based writer Jennifer Roberts has developed a philosophy that discusses the remodelling of a kitchen in terms of its impact on the world.
Key to her philosophies are reuse, recycle, salvage, and when buying new avoiding old-growth or tropical woods, particleboard or plywood made with urea formaldehyde-based glues (that can out-gas bad things into your house). Green includes appliances that use less energy, less water, and cost little more (if any more) than un-green equipment.
The book is a heavily illustrated study of several green kitchens that clearly illustrate that being green does not have a penalty in design, style or utility. Nor do they have to be cheaply made. Here are green kitchens with professional grade appliances.
