It's not just what you write, it's what you write it with. In a world where e-mailing and word processing are the new norm, nostalgia for fountain pens, inkwells, and other erstwhile desk accessories is on the rise. What's more satisfactory--signing a letter with a Bic or a black rubber gold-nibbed 1950s Parker Duofold? For lovers of pen and ink, The Write Stuff is an informative book on the history of ink and ink containers, pen making, and collecting.
Filled with black-and-white photographs and illustrated advertisements (plus a 31-page full-color section), The Write Stuff takes us through the advent of the writing trade up to the rediscovery of the fountain pen in the 1980s. Beginning with Egyptian scribes and lasting until the Middle Ages, inkwells were plain and serviceable and pens made from reeds or feathers. With the Renaissance, inkwells became ornate and were often made of precious metals or delicate porcelain (for the most part, only the wealthy could read and write). The steel pen debuted in the mid-1700s, and not until the 20th century did fountain pens, which are now sought-after collectibles, appear. Inkwells and desk accessories are often of more value than fountain pens, but the pens invoke a fond sentiment for less-hurried times--and these days, represent style, prestige, and power.
Written by Ray and Bevy Jaegers, longtime pen and inkwell collectors, The Write Stuff tends to focus more on the history of the inkwells, pens, and their makers than on how to collect or on the going rate for these collectibles. But they do make you want to push that keyboard aside and reach for a thick sheet of combed cotton paper, a cut crystal inkwell, and a white goose quill. --Dana Van Nest
Customer Reviews:
A very good introduction, but no more than that.......2003-02-19
This large and attractive book is a 199-page (not including table of contents, etc.) history of everything that covers the desk: from pens and inkwells to paperclips, paperweights and bookends. The highpoint of the book is definitely chapter 9, which gives tips on the repair and restoration of such items for the collector. Along the way, the reader is treated to numerous black-and-white pictures, and even 32 pages of color pictures!
This book is an excellent gift for someone who is interested in taking up the hobby of collecting desk accessories. However, as it is only intended as an introduction, it does not have any real depth. If you are hoping to use this book to help you understand the items you already have, then you will be disappointed (as I was). But, if you want this book for the introduction that it is, you will enjoy it.
Delightful Reference For "Writing Stuff" Collectors !.......2000-08-16
This brand new (2000) 208 page softbound volume contains more than 200 full color and 300 black and white very large, sharp photos of every type of writing tool and desk accessory. In addition to the great photos, there is plenty of detailed information about the various collectibles. Topics range from: history of ink and ink containers; stone to shell-inkwell materials; inkwell designs and motifs; history of pens; to collecting pens; advertisintg item;, and restoration and repair tips. Plenty of valuable data for the collector. There are pen ads, and year 2000 values. Pen collectors will be interested in the history provided, which takes you from quill pens to the ballpoint, and back to the old nib-style pens. There is an interesting chapter on the major fountain pen makers. Well worth adding to your collectibles library.

Book Description
This deluxe second edition has been expanded and reformatted to be almost one third larger than the first edition, a book that is already regarded as one of the most authoritative and entertaining books on the subject of pen collecting. Outlining eight major manufacturers and their classic model pens, the book is colorfully illustrated with photos and advertisements. You will find current collector values; new photographs including hundreds of additional vintage and contemporary writing instruments; new tips on buying, selling, and trading; and a new 'Collectibility Status Chart' identifying over 100 brands and models of fountain pens and their relative values. In addition, there are new sections on individual artisans and their unique creations and a revised section on contemporary manufacturers, double the size of the first edition. Discussions are included on building your collections, storage and display, refurbishing and repair, paper and inks, and valuing your pens. 2004 values. REVIEW: This book is a revised edition with current collector values and new photographs and catalog reprints. It contains valuable facts and insight from Frank Fenton himself. This book looks in-depth at the regular line production of Fenton's major patterns over four decades. It is divided alphabetically into four major chapters covering the specific patterns - Coin Dot, Crests, Hobnail, and Spiral Optic. Each chapter is also divided into the various colors in which the pattern was produced.

interesting & of moderate quality.......2007-08-20
This book does help identify pens to some extent. It often takes extensive looking to find information the reader doesn't already know.
good for beginners.......2007-01-28
As a beginner collector I found the book very usefull. It helps you organize and plan your collection. But also don't miss Fountain pens of the World by Andreas Lambrou. It's is expensive but it's a "must have".
Make this your First Pen Book........2007-01-11
This is a very informative book and a must have for collectors. It provides a sound foundation on a wide variety of fountain pens, their value and is an invaluable general reference for any collector. I find myself opening it at lease weekly.
I am glad this book exists!.......2005-10-18
This is the book for you, if you are fascinated by fountain pens and all their beauty, and would like to know them better, but did not know where to start. It is very clearly written, thoroughly documented and well-organized, and profusely illustrated. The photographs are excellent and there is a lot of practical information for would-be collectors.
Great Reference and Table book combined........2005-09-07
The history, photos, illustrations, and other content were great - the only deficiency was the lack of estimated prices for the pens.

Collectible Fountain Pens : Parker Sheaffer Wahl-Eversharp Waterman(1018)
ASIN: 0764309803 |
Book Description
This wonderful book has become the standard pocket guide in the field. It is just what collectors need for quick and easy reference...and its newly updated prices make it invaluable. Both handy and beautiful, it shows over 500 pens and pencils in nearly full-size color photos and provides short histories of nineteen main manufacturing companies. Concise, helpful information with each photo includes a guide to the price of each pen and pencil.
Customer Reviews:
The best fountain pen book for the size.......2006-12-20
This is by far the best book on the subject for the size. It has great pictures (all colored), concise information, and very informative price guides. It covers lots of different pens from major companies, such as Parker, Sheaffer, Waterman, Wahl-Eversharp, Conklin. It also has some useful information on some obscured old US pen companies (all gone now). I don't understand why people are so excited about the big book "Fountain Pens of the World" by Lambrou. It does have more company information and time-line of products and covers more international companies, but that big book has no price guide at all, and is about 8 times more expensive than this little book. In terms of the coverage of the types of pens in major US companies, the big Lambrou book is quite much inferior to this little book. I just love this little one. But admittedly, you need to have more than one books to do some cross-reference.
Beginner's Guide.......2006-03-11
A small and handy book. There are brief history of the pen companies and short description on pen collecting. The illustrations are nicely done, though the descriptions accompanying them sometimes too short. Good book for beginners. But for serious collcetors, better off with the big version by the same authors.
A valuable guide to carry with you........2002-04-18
This is a valuable and handy pocket (briefcase, etc.) guide to take on a pen expedition. It's a bit big for anything but a large overcoat pocket but is handy when carried in a case. It is mostly a guide to the identification of some of the pens to be found at pen shows and elsewhere. There are brief histories of 18 fountain pen manufacturers but they are short to rudimentary. There is a short but to the point and valuable guide to how to grade a pen.
The rest of the book is devoted to colored photos of various fountain pens. The pictures are very good and the selection of pens shown is very good. The values shown are, like all prices shown in such books, progressively out of date. They are good though to give a relative value for pens.
This is an excellent book for its purpose - to help identify, grade and price used fountain pens. It does its specified purpose well. It's not meant to be an encyclopedia. Such a book would have to be a many volumn set.
Deeply recommended!.......2001-06-18
An outstanding effort. The photographs are superb. Written in an easy language, makes it enjoyable to read to both novice and connoisseur collectors. However, the authors didn't mention some important pens (eg: Parker #14, Parker Duofold mandarin yellow, Parker Duofold Lapis Lazuli). ( My book is the Revised & Expanded 3rd edition, 2000).
The single finest reference on the subject available today........2000-06-06
Now in a completely revised, updated and expanded third edition, Stuart Schneider and George Fischler's The Illustrated Guide To Antique Writing Instruments continues to be the finest single volume identification and reference guide to pens and other writing instruments for collectors and dealers. Beautifully illustrated on every page with full color photographs of antique pens of all makes and categories, this uniquely beautiful and informative price guide is an indispensable reference that is an essential and enthusiastically recommended addition to any personal, professional, or community library antiques/collectibles reference book collection.

Escellent reference source.......2001-07-14
Excellent reference source for the beginning/intermediate collector. Good value.
Good for 1988 Prices Only!.......2001-02-13
Unlike most books on this subect, this edition has very few color photos and print quality is that of a copy machine. Its only redeming quality is its price listings that are already three years old.
GREAT HISTORY OF PEN COMPANIES ,BUT WEAK IN ORGANIZATION........1999-04-25
GREAT HISTORY OF FOUR PEN COMPANIES AND THEIR PRODUCT DEVELOPMENTS. I FIND THE BOOK TO BE DIFFICULT IN TRYING TO FIND THE PRICE . PRICES ARE LISTED IN ABOUT FIVE DIFFERENT PLACES THROUGH OUT THE BOOK, SOME LISTED AFTER THE COMPANY SECTION. SOME BY PAGE, NOT NAME. THE COLOR SECTION IS BEAUTIFUL, BUT TRY TO FIND THE MANUFACTURE AND THE PRICE GUIDE--- IT TAKES ALOT OF FLIP-FLOPPIN' BACK AND FORWARD TO FIND ALL THE INFORMATION I NEED. ALOT OF OVER KILL ON ALL THOSE "OLD" ADDS. FROM A CONKLIN TO A EPENCO I RATE THIS A 66.
Useful as a guide as to what is collectable and what is not........1999-01-27
I find this book to be very helpful as one of serveral reference books for buying and selling pens. As with everything, you must learn to use information to your benefit. More color pictures would be nice.
Large in size -- much of it fluff........1998-08-25
Considering the size of this volume, it is amazingly devoid of substance or content. Althought the author has done a creditable job of collecting photos (mostly B&W), and reprinting vintage advertisements, no additional information, which might have added perspective or insight, is provided. How can you date a Parker Vacumatic? What years are indicated by three bands versus one? Which colors or model variations are most common or rarest? These are the types of information that would have made this book useful to both beginning and experienced collectors. Unfortunately, the author provides none of this, and what results is a virtually useless hodgepodge of recycled advertisements.
Average customer rating:
- Sometimes a pen is just a pen. (But not every time....)
- A useful guide for serious fountain pen collectors.

Customer Reviews:
Sometimes a pen is just a pen. (But not every time....).......2000-10-20
Anyone who enjoys the beauty and mechanics of fine fountain pens will enjoy this volume. The book contains dozens of beautifully photographed pens, most from 1900-1940, a golden age for fountain pens. The intricately engraved and filigreed metals and hand-painted plastics are well presented, with brief descriptions of each pen. Most of the pens are beyond the budget of anyone but the most serious collector, but their allure is captured well.
The emphasis on collecting rare pens limits its scope and appeal: Interesting (but less valuable) pens of the post-World War II period are largely ignored. However, this is one of the few book s on pens, and the beautiful merging of form, function, and fanciful embellishment is evident on every page. There is a brief history of fountain pens, focusing mainly on mechanical advances. Some of this description is too dense, and the inclusion of diagrams from the period is interesting but not very instructive for the non-collector. Includes names of dealers (and even fountain pen clubs), a guide to what is repairable in a used pen, and histories of pen manufacturers. Recommended especially for collectors, and generally for people interested in how design and craft can elevate the aesthetics of an everyday object.
A useful guide for serious fountain pen collectors........1997-11-10
I have been collected fountain pens for 7 years, and I always would like to find some books which can improve my knowledge and skill of collecting. This book is compendious, but contains every basic concepts that a pen collector must have. It is usuful and beautiful. Some firends of mine want to buy this book, but it is out of stock for a while. I hope it can back to stock soon.

Small hardback book contains some description of fountain pens made by some companies. I was surprised that Conway Stewart pens were left out. Personally, I believe that Conway Stewart pens were very important in fountain pen history. It is a good book for amateurs collecting fountain pens, but not so great for people with more knowledge in the field. Warmly recommend.

The Best Miniature Bear Making Book on the market!.......1999-12-03
This is the best book on miniature bear making I've encountered. The author leads you thru the easiest to the most difficult with ease. You don't have to buy this book for one or two favorite patterns, all of them will be your favorite. I highly recommend this book to anyone wanting to make miniatures.
This book sets a new standard for craftspeople........1997-11-21
Debbie Kesling's book has given me hope that even I could make a miniature teddy bear. After seeing her work up close, I was certain I could never manage the mastery evident in each bear she creates. During the years I taught crafts, I never ran across a more clearly written how-to book, especially with such detailed photographs and a willingness to share secrets to success learned from years of experience. Her book is typical of her work... precise, well-composed and full of substance.
This is an enchanting and informative book.......1997-11-11
Filled with a wealth of information and beautifully photographed, Debbie Kesling's book is an absolute neccessity for the beginner as well as the more experienced bear maker. Every bear lover should have a copy. It is a wonderful coffee table book as well!
Perfection!.......1997-11-10
How to Make Enchanting Miniature Teddy Bears by Debbie Kesling is as perfect a book as the tiny teddies she makes. Just as each bear is executed with thought, planning, and skill, so is this book. The text provides not only an excellent guide to the world of miniature bears, their design, and creation, but is a very enjoyable read. The photos are sharp and detailed and give the user an excellent picture of each step in the process. This book is absolutely number one!

Book Description
The area along the Lawa River, the border river between Surinam and French Guiana, is presently inhabited by about 2,000 Maroons who call themselves Aluku or Boni. They are the descendants of Surinamese slaves who escaped from plantations during the period of slavery. After protracted fighting on Surinamese territory, they finally fled to French Guiana. This is a fascinating account of the genesis of the Boni- Maroons and their continuous warfare against the white planters and their colonial armies. The works that have been published on the Boni-Maroons, for instance John Gabriel Stedman's famous `Narrative' from 1796, represent only fragments of the Boni-history. Wim Hoogbergen's book is a successful attempt to paint an overall picture of this interesting Maroon-history. The author combed the archives of The Netherlands, France and Surinam in search of data referring to the Boni-Maroons from their origins until 1860, with astonishing results.
