Book Description
Generously sized and beautifully illustrated, African Textiles is an authoritative survey of textile arts - unique and collectible rugs, tapestries, garments, and much more - from across the continent. Author John Gillow traveled extensively throughout Africa, uncovering the dazzling range of traditional hand-crafted textiles from each region. Five sections detail the textile history and traditions within Africa's major geographical areas, examining materials, dyes, decorations, patterns, and techniques. From the stripweave cloth of the Ashanti in the West to Ethiopian embroidery in the East, from Berber rugs in the North to the Madagascan silk of the South - and everything in between - the breadth of coverage in African Textiles is peerless. Robustly illustrated with over 500 color photographs and drawings, this is an exciting new sourcebook for those interested in textile design and the traditional arts of Africa.

Astounding creativity captured in a book.......2006-05-08
John Gillow's African Textiles is an inspiring review of the diverse creativity of textiles in Africa. I read this book before I travelled in south and south-eastern Africa and it helped me identify what I was seeing and its quality. A fantastic and well written resourse.
African Textiles in an Amazing Source.......2004-06-22
This book is a wonderful source of material for anyone doing historical research on African and subgroup textiles. It has sections from Ghana, Niger, Nigeria, Eastern African, etc. It goes in a good depth on the process and cultural influence of each textile and their signifigance. The illustrations are also an amazing quality with good size picture. As a Theatre Studies major, I had to research material for Nigerian costuming and this book was a nice resource to get a feel of the fabric in this region. Although this book doesn't go too much in depth about the attire Africans wore, it does go about telling what fabrics are used. This is definitely a must buy.
Customer Reviews:
Disappointing design and layout.......2003-09-05
While the content of this book is, for the most part, informative and interesting (although limited in its geographical reach within Africa), the production side leaves a lot to be desired. The bold, heavy typeface is ugly and hard to read and rivers of white space running down the columns give the typesetting an unprofessional look - this is the kind of basic typesetting error one expects in a cheap flyer, not in a glossy coffee table book. There are several typing errors, which are annoying, and the book could also have done with a good edit. For example, the author declines to explain various weaving processes because they are apparently too technical, but stating this at least three times in one book suggests that either the author doesn't understand the processes himself, or he has a rather low opinion of his readers' capacity to understand them. Either way, a good edit could have ironed out the repetition of this problem, or found a way to explain these technical processes - for example, simple line illustrations could have been used to show graphically what the author was not able to put into words. While the photos are generally good and make one really want to see the textiles in the flesh, as it were, those that are meant to show more detail are often not sufficiently close up to really provide much more information. They come across as repetition or as gap-fillers rather than serving any more useful function. There are several examples in the section on raffia cloths of Zaire, and a glaring example on pages 68/69. A more successful example is on pages 76/77, where the detail does in fact show more detail.
Good Introductory Book on African textiles........2000-11-07
This is a very interesting and informative book on this subject. It makes one appreciate the workmanship and artistic style of these fabrics. This book, first, describes the main materials and techniques of African cloth production and decoration and, then, explores in detail a few of the more popular of the African textiles. These include Raffia cloths of Zaire, Kente(Royal Cloth of the Ashanti), Bogolan (Mud-Dyed Cloth of Mali),Aso Oke (Ceremonial Cloth of the Yoruba), and African Wax -Printed Cloths. Detailed descriptions and full-color photographs not onlly glorifies the art but makes one understand the real African textiles from the African influenced copies.
Excellent.......1999-01-01
Great photos, well researched, unstuffy, accessible, respectful and more or less contemporary. The notes on futhur reading could have been expanded and an index would have been helpful.
Book Description
The fabrics here are African designs, made primarily in Africa, commercially, rather than by traditional methods. Most are contemporary, made of cotton; though varieties of rayon, wool, a blend, or synthetic also are present, as well as fabric with metallic thread or surface embellishment. Many examples are printed adaptations of traditional woven textiles, because the pattern and color and their effect are the essential qualities. This volume, arranged visually with a focus on design, color, and pattern, is a pictorial survey, which includes examples of simple, bold two and three-color designs, stripes, grid formats, and overall geometric patterns. The pictures serve as reference and inspiration to artists, designers, and all involved with fashion and fabric. The companion volume, African Prints, complements the designs featured in this book.

Book Description
To go to any market in West Africa, where the women are swathed in brightly patterned wraps, is to experience an assault on your visual senses. This book, too, is a visual feast, illustrating the richness and diversity of the African textile tradition, and providing designers at all levels with inspiration for their own work. Over 30 textiles from the British Museum's renowned collection are explored in detail: magnificent blue-and-white, indigo-resist-dyed cloths from West Africa; "mud cloths" from Mali; the unique warp-striped weaves and ikats from Madagascar; "adinkra" blockprints and painted "calligraphy" cloths from Ghana and the "adire" cloths from Yorubaland. In his enlightening text John Gillow provides the background information to bring the pieces to life and clearly explains the full range of principle techniques employed. In addition, brief commentaries highlight the design features and a technical glossary supports the main text so you can rely on the book for eye-catching patterns as well as refer to it for specific information.

Customer Reviews:
From A Very Satisfied Reader!.......2002-01-18
This is a story all young men and women should read...it is truly the story of "the American Dream" come to life...it demonstrates what tenacity and chutzpah can accomplish in the very competetive fashion world.
I'm fortunate enough to own several of Mr. Hankins' designs, and knowing the story behind the clothing is wonderful.
I was very pleased with this book.
An amazing story of success.......2000-05-04
This book is outstanding! I reccomend this book to anyone who can get their hands on it. It is a true story of hard work, determination, strongness, and much more. This book is written in such a way that you feel as if you know Anthony Mark Hankins personally. I loved it!
Speak for Yourself Kirkus!.......1999-04-24
In response to Kirkus Reviews, why wouldn't consumers want to know about a designer of such determination and talent? It's like your saying because AMH is young and not yet as common a household name as Calvin Klein that his life and accomplishments don't deserve recognition. His story has given many aspiring designers, myself included the confidence to reach for their dreams.
A sincere story that expresses success is from the heart!.......1999-04-01
With today's society, it often seems that we have little to do with our destiny. In this book, Hankins descibes a clear interpretation of his life. He also shares his commitment to success without compromising his integrity. This is a rare find in the world of business!!! The book is written from a sincere and personal aspect which allows the reader to feel as if the opportunity to know Hankins is contained in these pages. Delightful and inspiring describe the overall feel of the text. Highly recommend to read if you desire to make a career of design your goal. Hankins set the goal and achieved it, thus proving his participation in creating his destiny. He continues to 'raise the bar' in his career from what I have seen. Look forward to the sequel!!!!
A rare and remarkable story of ambition and success!!.......1998-11-24
A remarkable story of success in the ever competitive fashion and corporate world. Anthony is a definite inspiration and envy of many young and struggling. Follow your heart and your dreams seems to be the theme of this book. We all need that fabric of dreams talk every so often in our lives. I could not help but conclude this book with a big old smile!!!!
Book Description
For centuries, the people of Morocco have been producing magnificent embroideries, pile rugs, and flatweaves. The Fabric of Moroccan Life showcases rare embroideries, hangings, and rugs that reflect the broad range of traditions and cultural influences active in Morocco during the 18th, 19th, and 20th centuries. The book explores the artistic importance of these superb weavings as well as their central role in Moroccan culture.
Approximately 150 pieces -- and numerous details -- are illustrated in color, and additional photographs (including many that were taken in the 1930s) show how they were once used in everyday life in Morocco. The book includes essays on Moroccan embroidery and its origins, traditional costumes of the cities and rural areas, the weavings of the Berbers and other ethnic groups, and the distinctive characteristics of items made by particular ethnic sub-groups. The contributing writers are eminent scholars and experts in a variety of fields, including Moroccan history and culture; Moroccan rugs, textiles, and clothing; and natural dyes. A wealth of information is included that has never before been available in one volume.

Amazing Designs, So-So Instructions.......2006-05-09
I own both the 1st and 2nd book from these authors. I've made 4 different leis from the first book, and am starting to get a feel for the techniques. The instructions really could be better, but they've been adequate for my needs. It would be nice if the authors could have included more step-by-step close-up photographs, and as already suggested in another review, more sources for the supplies and materials. (In my case, I've just substituted regular needles and nylon fishing line for the special needles and thread). I was able to find the recommended brand of ribbon from an online source (www.jkmribbon.com), for anyone who's having trouble locating the stuff. Since the book doesn't include difficulty ratings for each design, I can only suggest that the reader look closely at the instructions, and choose his/her first project carefully. I'm not a serious crafter, but I've been able to create really impressive leis on my first attempts. Since these books are about the only ones dealing with this type of project, I feel they're worth the reasonable purchase price.
Great instruction - but impossible to find supplies!.......2005-10-31
I bought both books 1 & 2 and I really love them the instruction is uncomplicated & easy to follow. However finding the supplies you need (if you don't live in Hawaii) is not easy!
I was very frustrated searching online, I went to craft store after craft store & couldn't find beeding needles that looked like what they had a picture of, with a magnifying glass I was able to get the number off the package in the picture. I only found one place that sold these needles online (but was thrilled!)
I still am unable to locate the Aoyama Tape (all purpose double sided tape used to join ribbons) my searches for "Aoyama" don't come up with any kind of tape.... it would be great to know if any 2 sided tape will work?
Same with the nylon beeding thread again I'm not able to locate what is in the picture I'm assuming size matters as it must fit though the eye of the beeding needle but no size is listed.
I'm also having a hard time finding the specific embroidery needles in the sizes listed...
It would have been EXTREMELY HELPFUL to have more information about the supplies listed. The only store listed is in Hawaii you can't order online but you can mail order. The address is listed but not the phone number.
The only other help was call you craft stores???? yeah have fun with that one I visited craft stores & they had no idea what I was talking about.
I really can't wait to start making lei's & hope that someday in the next few months I can finally find & receive all the supplies I need!
The books though are beautiful & the Leis magnificent!!!!
Great book for those interested in this craft!.......2004-11-25
I belong to a hula halau and recently we were each required to make ribbon leis for a fundraiser. I thought this book was very useful in instructing me on how to make more unique kinds of leis versus the most simple and common technique. The designs included in this book are wonderful and made my leis bestsellers! Using your creativity, you can use different types of ribbons to create interesting textures and looks. Great pictures, easy instructions, all around good book!
