Book Description

For twenty-five years Recipes from Miss Daisy's has been the cookbook of choice for the thousands of people who have enjoyed the warm hospitality and delicious food that were the hallmarks of Miss Daisy's Tearoom in Franklin and in the Green Hills area of Nashville, Tennessee. Now, in response to popular demand, a new edition of the "wonderful little yellow cookbook" has been lovingly prepared for those who have nearly worn out their well-thumbed copies as well as generations of Middle Tennesseans who will continue to enjoy it for years to come.

The story of Miss Daisy's Tearoom is as interesting as the food served there. When Carter's Court in Franklin was still on the drawing board, the developers recognized the need for a place where ladies could come for lunch. When a turn-of-the-century house was moved there, people exclaimed, "That's got to be a tearoom," and so it was. The restaurant moved to Green Hills in 1982, expanding to a full-service restaurant, and returning to Franklin in 1986 as Daisy's of Carter's Court.

The food in Recipes from Miss Daisy's is the same food that was served at the restaurants plus some more wonderful dishes that no proper Southerner could resist. Turkey Divan, Buttermilk Pie, Congealed Cucumber Salad, Sally Lunn Muffins, Creamed Chicken, Festive Cranberry Salad, Marinated Carrots, Fudge Pie, Garden Tomato Stuffed with Tearoom Tuna Salad, Miss Daisy's Beef Casserole (a favorite!), and Tomato Aspic are among the Tearoom favorites that have become classic fare for Middle Tennesseans and across the South.

Updated to include serving amounts and to clarify some of the original instructions, this 25th anniversary edition of Recipes from Miss Daisy's will earn a well-deserved place in kitchens and on cookbook shelves everywhere.

5 out of 5 stars Recipes from my Nashville childhood, found at last!.......2001-07-02

This cookbook is a real treasure of good Southern cooking. These are the very dishes that made Miss Daisy's Tearoom a Nashville landmark. Miss Daisy's Tearoom has been such a pervasive influence on cooking in Nashville that my mother and all her friends must have been cooking from this cookbook back when I was growing up in Nashville. Amazingly to me, here are the very recipes my mother cooked from before her recipes got lost in a move! Until I picked up this book, I had given up hope of being able to duplicate certain beloved dishes, like the Christmas Ribbon Salad that used to grace our buffet table in its red-green-and-white glory whenever we had a party, as well as the Fresh Apple Cake that I used to help make by grating the Granny Smith apples. This book is chock-full of delectable recipes, and I highly recommend it to all who want to have a taste of Nashville's culinary heritage. My gratitude to Miss Daisy herself, for sharing her recipes with us!

2 out of 5 stars This book is missing pages........2007-01-23

Just received my second copy (replacement copy) of "300 Years of Kitchen Collectibles" and it also is missing pages 401-432 and has duplicate pages 433-464. That makes two books missing the same pages.
Otherwise the book has a lot of information.

5 out of 5 stars most comprehensive book on kitchen collectibles.......2006-09-17

I bought this book about a year ago, I saw a lady using it at an auction bidding on kitchen items. The next day I ordered this book and it has been my guide ever since, with so many kitchen items out there, fakes and repros, it's good to have a helper to guide you thru a maze of online auctions and fleamarket finds.
The description are accurate, there are plenty of pictures, the index and glossaries are very well organized, it also gives marks, how the items have changed over the years, who made them, where when and how they were used. I love it.

            5 out of 5 stars A Packrat's Delight!.......2005-01-11

This is packrat Linda Campbell Franklin's fifth edition...for many good reasons!

What first seems like a hodgepodge of items to a beginner-collector or student, has a certain logic or shorthand to those in the know, and to those getting acquainted with kitchen collectibles, it's an eye opening education! All sorts of pointers, reproduction alerts and historical notes are placed throughout the book, to avoid being duped by many fakes.

Yes as one reviewer noted, there is scant information on items less than 75 years old, and that's just fine with me..these 890 pages are going to keep me interested and learning for quite a while! The little color section isn't terribly helpful...more smaller photos of items could have been placed in these expensive pages. Still for most of these mechanical items, color is not the key in identification. I'm just tickled to be able to recognize what a peculiar gadget is/was used for! So if someone realistically wants more black and white pictures/drawings, bring them on..and yes there could be sharper photos of some blurry items taken for better clarity in a future edition-it's not a problem for me!

She lists many references for those seeking more information, and addresses to contact specialized collectors or clubs. Well worth the price of admission, alone!

This is a delightful "must have" for the "kitchen curious" and beginning collectors!

5 out of 5 stars I liked it so much I gave it away.......2002-06-06

Seldom is a reference book an entertaining read. Seldom is a good read easy to reference and find information quickly. This book does an excellent job of bridging both worlds. For the casual auction hound or dealer this book is invaluable.

I liked the book so much I was wondering what to give my mother for mother's day. She's one of those people who either has everything she needs or goes and gets what she needs when she wants it. The idea of giving her this book struck me as a good one. Reluctantly I gave her my copy. She clearly has enjoyed it, she allows me to look at it when I'm visiting. She hasn't been willing to loan to me though.

2 out of 5 stars Not worth the price........2002-04-17

The 300 years of Kitchen Collectibles is sorely lacking in information about the last 75 years of kitchen collectibles. The majority of the book covers what I would call primitive kitchen items. The photos are grainy and lack detail. If you have a kitchen item that you need to identify..this book might prove useful.

5 out of 5 stars The Bible of Griswold collecting.......2001-08-31

Being a collector, dealer and trader with my own online cast iron business..., this the what most collectors call the Bible of Griswold or the BLUE book. It is well laid out with great pictures. The author, Dave Smith, is friendly and easy to approach with questions and is very knowledgeable. It is the first book I go to.

5 out of 5 stars Consider it the Bible of Cast Iron.......1998-09-18

Finding the author online and then finding his book. What a great book for the first time collector, the continuing collector or the expert. Precise information presented in and easy to read format. Great pictures and lots of neat little notes. A sample of the pricing of any and all. Includes a short history of most of the companies that have made cast iron cookware, and other items in cast iron.

5 out of 5 stars Another Good Reference Book on Old Electric Appliances..........2000-08-23

I was not surprised at the abundance of toasters, since the title leads one to expect that. In addition to toasters, it contains a good assortment of other common and not-so-common electrical appliances of yesteryear and is therefore valuable as an identification guide. Values probably have changed a lot since the publication date, but the reader can still obtain a good feel for relative values. I did find one toaster whose information contradicted Helen Greguire's book on the subject (Sunbeam Model T-20) but was able to forgive the author who has provided another good resource.

                4 out of 5 stars Great selection. Low-fi Pictures.......1997-12-08

Excellent selection of material, but a few too many toasters! However, I even found my waffle iron and egg cooker in here. The prices are a lot lower than my local dealers are asking.

My favorite bookstore was closed by a power outage, so I was forced to go to a nearby "big box" media store.

It was destiny! I found this book on a bargain rack.

Graham Blackburn provides precise descriptions regarding the history, form, function and use of all the old tools. He applies this wonderfully researched information to today's world of noisy, expensive power tools - showing many benefits to doing things "the old" and often better way. He doesn't suggest that you trash your tablesaw, drillpress or router, but offers effective alternatives that have increased my enjoyment of woodworking as a hobby. I've spent hundreds on woodworking titles, but none have had such a profound influence as this.

Very readable and intelligent - entertaining dry wit. It's like having an old timer, with old time wisdom in the shop.

It will pay for itself in a week, and maybe change your methods of work for life! Negatives? I have bandages on two fingers and my thumb, but I'm having a ball!

For speed and production, power tools are the norm in many woodshops, professional and amateur. But a growing number of woodworkers are developing a renewed interest in the use of traditional hand tools for personal satisfaction, the pleasure of hands-on work, and a more leisurely, contemplative approach to woodworking.

Blackburn has assembled a virtual encyclopedia of traditional woodworking tools, setting-out tools, sawing tools, planes, edge tools, striking tools, and boring tools. He entertains as well as instructs the reader with anecdotes from his many years of personal experience as a master woodworker. More than a manual for woodworkers, this is also a reference guide for people who collect beautiful, historic hand tools, and the hundreds of line drawings of hand tools are a delight. --Mark A. Hetts

                Book Description

Graham Blackburn's new encyclopedia covers every aspect of choosing, rehabilitating, and getting the most out of traditional handtools for woodworking. In this age of machines, handtools remain the best way, and are often the only way, of creating beautiful details, perfect fit, and final finish. Handtools liberate the furnituremaker, builder, and general woodworker from the limited artistic vocabulary of machinery. With handtools, there are no technical limits.

Traditional Woodworking Handtools explains how to set up and use each tool, and puts the tool in the context of the complete woodworking process. Blackburn includes interesting historical information as well as telling anecdotes drawn from his forty-year career at the bench. Readers will come away with not only the knowledge they need to improve their own woodworking, but also a deeper appreciation of their craft and its role in the construction of civilization. I found blackburn's book to be extremely helpful in my woodworking, most of which I do with hand tools. The book is well organized and covers more info than most will ever use. His description of sharpening handsaws simplified the process exponentially for me, and now I follow his advice to sharpen my own saws. Blackburn's book reflects his extensive background in woodoworking and his simple writing style makes the book a pleasure to read and one you will go back to time and time again. Highly recommended as a basis for a woodworking library.

For the decorating dud, a book with lots of pictures is a godsend. Someone else has gone through the bother of choosing tone, furniture, fabric, and accessories and put them together for a cohesive look, not once but hundreds of times. You pick and choose components that seem like they could be you, if the you that you already are were a little more organized, focused, and stylish. Martha Stewart might disdain the technique, but men and women with a full life and a disjointed salon will applaud.

2 out of 5 stars not very creative.......2002-12-15

With the word creative in the title I was expecting a more original style of decorating, or at least a broader range of styles. Instead, the style of this book is primarily tradional/cosmopolitan. I do not like that style, so that is probably why I don't like this book. I found it rather boring. The photos are not too bad, but nothing special. I have to admit I was too turned off by the photos to bother reading much of the text, so perhaps the written information would be more useful to people, but I doubt it. Two other definitely more useful books would be The Kitchen Planner and Better Homes and Gardens Complete Kitchens. I reccomend that you skip this book.

5 out of 5 stars Creative Home Design: Rooms for Everyday Living.......2000-06-27

This book is a wonderful design book. The photos are inspiring and show a broad range of modern and welcoming styles. The text accompanying them is very straightforward and details what limitations or problems the design overcame. It is difficult to imagine that the rooms will become dated - they appear to be very fresh, sensuous and appealing. I was able to take some ideas from various rooms and incorporate into my place. This book is very inspirational and allows one to view work of top designers and architects not readily accessible to the public.
