1 out of 5 stars IF YOU LOVE COMMUNITY COOKBOOKS THIS IS NOT THE BOOK FOR YOU.......2005-09-29

I REGRET TO SAY THE UNIVERSITY OF MASSACHUSETTS DID US NO FAVOR WHEN THEY PUBLISHED THIS BOOK. I WAS EXPECTING A FINE NARRATIVE ON THE HISTORY OF COMMUNITY COOKBOOKS AND INSTEAD PLOWED THROUGH A DISSERTAION ON FEMINISM, PERSONAL CULTURAL ATTITUDES AND DOWN-RIGHT BORING TRIVIA MIXED IN WITH A FEW FACTS THAT WOULD BE WORTH YOUR TIME IF THEY WEREN'T BURIED IN THE THESIS STYLE OF WRITING. WHAT A PITY TO RUIN A GOOD BASIC SUBJECT WITH ACADEMIA DRIBBLE. DO NOT WASTE YOUR MONEY ON THIS ONE. IT WOULD BE BETTER SPENT ON A GOOD COMMUNITY COOKBOOK THAT BENEFITS YOUR FAVORITE OGANIZATION.

2 out of 5 stars Ostentatious analysis of an otherwise simple subject.......1998-10-30

If you are looking for enjoyable reading of or about community cookbooks, don't buy this book. If you are looking for ostentatious babble about analyzing community cookbooks this one is for you. The authors wordiness never quite gets to the point, however there are a few glimmers of. interest offered by some of the contributing essayists in the book. Unfortunately those sparks of historical information and excerpts really do not hold on to interest for the rest of the book.

The sweater patterns in this book are divided by type of knitting; Shetland lace, 'fisherman' (Aran) patterns, and Fairisle (complex color patterns). This is an older book, so patterns are presented 'row-by-row' (K2, inc 1, P2, etc) rather than in graphs. Clear color photos show the detail of each sweater and the instructions are well presented. I've referred to this book over and over; it's a constant source of inspiration.

Another great Debbie Bliss book...Some really beautiful patterns in this book...Just remember that the end results will come out lots bigger than you think...Very generous sizing...

5 out of 5 stars the Best Bliss Book.......2003-03-04

....and I mean it. This one is really good. Like many other knitters I have been burned by Bliss' designs often. Her designs do tend to repeat themselves from collection to collection and the pictures, while cute, never show the designs properly. Well, this collection has b&w pictures of the items next to the instructions after the color pictures which are huddled in the front of the book. (I'm talking about a hardcover copy and am assuming that the paperback is identical). The designs are charming and definitely classics. I am buying my own paperback copy and finally returning my library copy. I also recommend the book Knits for Kids by Lena Stengard. This one is a keeper

4 out of 5 stars Great example of knitter's "Bliss".......2000-03-28

I just counted, I have 7 books by Debbie Bliss. That is probably why I found this book to be a bit less enchanting than I had expected it to be.

I like her books - enjoy the layout and can always understand the instructions. However, within the body of her work, this set of designs just seemed a little too similar to some in her other books for me to get excited. As a stand alone book, it has charming styles.

I still give it a 4 for good instructions, photography and cute styles.

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful collection of kids sweaters.......1999-11-23

Bliss designed a great variety of styles, all attractive and all, sadly, only in children's sizing (many would make truly lovely adult sweaters). Difficulty level is not high -- some are fairly simple to make and the others are well worth the effort. Some are rugged sweaters, others decorative. Sweaters for boys and girls, too. The photography is nice and instructions are clear. Really a fabulous book.

5 out of 5 stars inspiring patterns, a bit difficult for new knitters........1998-04-27

My husband and I started knitting while expecting our first child. Ms. Bliss' books contain photos of beautiful sweaters, caps and dresses which are very inspiring. The most classically fashionable that I've ever seen, and surprisingly not impossible to make. We also own her "Kids Country Knits" which is great. My husband's first ever knitting project was a large stuffed sheep, and his second a beautiful sailor collar style sweater with a family of ducks knitted into the design. Both turned out great!!! These patterns are in the "Kids Country Knits". I made a cute hat and sweater set from the "Classic Knits for Kids". I recommend her books as the instructions are understandable, versatile and the small child sizes take a short time to make.

    Book Description

The turn of the spinning wheel, the harnessed horses pulling the plow, the knock of the cooper's hammer, the scything of the summer's corn—all these were once familiar sights and sounds in and around Irish homesteads. They echo the history of crafts that may go back 3,000 years into Ireland's past.

In this book, time stands still as we meet the skilled practitioners of more than forty traditional Irish crafts, from woodcarvers, thatchers, goldsmiths, and potters to glassblowers of the world-famous Waterford crystal, crios weavers from the Aran Islands, and the makers of items as varied as harps and quilts, baskets and curraghs, drystone walls and Irish lace.

David Shaw-Smith has traveled the length and breadth of Ireland and its islands to assemble this record, documenting the crafts in their natural surroundings before they disappear completely. His superb color photographs include both poetic images of the finished craft pieces and informative sequences explaining the production process. They are accompanied by Sally Shaw-Smith's evocative drawings and by texts from some of Ireland's finest historians and craft writers.

A magnificent testament to the centuries-old traditions of a vibrant land, the book is both a chronicle of times past and a celebration of an enduring culture, and will appeal to anyone connected with the Emerald Isle or who has ever visited it. It is the culmination of a forty-year project, the first fruits of which were seen in David Shaw-Smith's earlier book, Ireland's Traditional Crafts, published in the 1980s. 677 illustrations, 621 in color.

    5 out of 5 stars Gorgeous patterns.......2007-03-10

Alice Starmore is not the only designer who can write inspired traditional patterns from the British Isles. And note that this book is not hundreds of dollars!

5 out of 5 stars beautiful and timeless patterns.......2005-08-30

I've been knitting for about ten years and thought I had already seen all of the best books of traditional knitting patterns, and was delighted to discover this one several months ago. I don't know how this one escaped my notice for so long, but seeing that no one else has reviewed it here, I'm wondering if it is because this book never gained popularity amongst knitters. If so, that is a shame, because this book is loaded with stunningly beautiful traditional sweater patterns, some of the best I have seen.

Edited by Debbie Bliss, this is a collection of work by designers such as Lesley Stanfield, Pat Quiroga, Sheila Hollingsworth, T. M. Adie and Sons, Jaimieson Knitwear, Freya Hunter, Fiona McTague, Gladys Amedro, Janet Mcleod, Ina Irvine, Laura Williamson, and Kate Upcraft.

The outstanding photography (this book is beautiful enough to be a coffee table book) is done by Sandra Lousada. The actual setting does appear to be the Scottish and Irish Isles. The pictures all have a naturalistic or old fashioned kind of look---the settings are the shore, rocky cliffs, gardens, and indoor settings such as a furniture maker's workshop. Some of the models are the usual tall and slender picture-perfect people, but some of the adult sweaters are actually modelled by old people. For example, an elderly man with his donkey models an aran fishing shirt. An older woman knitting a fair isle on her porch models the lace and cable cardigan. To my eye, this adds greatly to the visual appeal of the book.

Every garment in this book is a classic which will transcend the test of time. Some are easier than others, but most are for the intermediate or advanced knitter. Many of them feature stitch patterns that are fairly complex (at least by contemporary standards) and are knitted at a fine gauge of 6-8 stitiches per inch. But because they are classics, they will still be in style next year and in many years to come. These are heirloom quality sweaters that can be passed down from one generation to the next. Virtually all of them feature traditional stitich patterns, but these are sometimes used in new ways.

There are 14 fair isle projects and most or all of them use standard jumper weight yarn.. For adults, there are two cardigans, three sweaters (long sleeved pullovers), three slipovers (sleeveless vests), one waistcoat (sleeveless cardigan), and one beret (matches one of the cardigans). For kids, there is one cardigan, one slipover, one sweater, and one beret (matches the cardigan). Many of these projects feature traditional natural tones, but there are some bright colors as well.

My favorite patterns in this book are the ganseys, of which there are six. One is knit with DK yarn at a gauge of about 5 and a half stitches per inch, but the others are all knit at a finer gauge of at least 6 and a half stitches per inch. Gansey yarn is used for four of them, and could be used for a fifth. These are absolutely gorgeous garments. One features the beautiful tree of life pattern. Several others are based on the famous Hebridean ganseys of Eriskay, with vertical panels of knit-purl textural patterns on the body, motifs of texture and openwork and the occasional cable in the yoke, and a horizontal band of contrasting texture separating yoke and body.

The seven aran projects are also very nice. They are knit with aran weight yarn and so are probably the quickest to knit of the projects in this book. The Family Aran (sized for the family) is a fairly standard aran cardigan, but some of the other designs are more original, such as the Aran Jacket With Lace Panels and the Aran Jacket With Blackberry Stitch (also features interesting openwork panels). The Twisted Rib Aran Sweater is one of the most beautiful aran designs I have seen. It's as nice or nicer than many of Alice Starmore's arans.

There are four lace projects---a Shetland Shoulder Shawl, Chevron Lace Sweater, Shetland Lace Sweater with Cables, and (my favorite) a Lace and Cable Cardigan.

Did anything about this book disappoint me? Well, yes, I have to admit. While the designers have embraced tradtional style and stitch pattern, they tend to avoid tradtional knittting techniques. No steeks are used in the fairl isle patterns. All of the fair isle cardigans are knit back and forth in one piece to the arm holes. Some of the other fair isle pieces are knit in the round to the arm holes and then front and back yokes are knit separately back and forth. Some are actually knit entirely back and forth in separate pieces. Because I find stranded knitting to go much faster in the round, I would have preferred steeked arm holes for sweaters and cardigans and steeked front openings for cardigans. Four of the six ganseys are knit back and forth in pieces. Of the two ganseys that are knit in the round, only one uses underarm gussets. I would love to have seen more traditional gansey techniques.

I think that the designers may have avoided tradtional techniques in order to make the patterns seem less intimidating to the average contemporary knitter, but it seems to me that if you have the patience and skill for these kinds of projects, you are the type who will want to use the traditonal techniques.

Despite the avoidance of traditonal techniques, I gave this book five stars because rarely have I seen so many beautiful and timeless sweater patterns in one book. I would enjoy making (though I'd modify the patterns and incorporate traditional techniques) and wearing almost all of these designs. That's more than I can say for almost any other book in my large knitting library.

I've been collecting books about making paper. Some are long and complex - more than a novice crafter even wants to know. Some books use terms or materials that are difficult or confusing. Some leave you with many questions. Polly's little book tackles teaching you to make paper the most directly of all the books I've read. She's got a photograph for every single step in the process and the materials are simple and accessible. The herb portion is interesting and will make you want to experiment. I was just so thrilled that this little book was so definitive enough that it could give me the confidence to really try papermaking.

      Book Description

Kevin McCloud has been acknowledged as one of the most innovative decorators working today. In this exciting book, he breaks new ground on the subject of paint and decorative techniques. From information on essential colors and the use of different paints, to an unequaled step-by-step section on a vast range of decorating techniques, Kevin McCloud's Complete Book of Paint and Decorative Techniques is a definitive guide to the subject, showing how to decorate any home with originality and style.

From the earthy hues of Italian farmhouses to the cool elegance of Scandinavian interiors, color has always played a crucial role in decorative schemes. In the first section of the book a unique cut-out color selector illustrates the eight essential earth colors on the decorator's palette and shows how to create and combine them successfully by clever intermixing of pigments. These essential colors, together with five secondary colors, are then used in the techniques throughout the book, so that all the stunning decorative effects can be easily recreated.

The techniques section that follows contains instructions and step-by-step photographs for more than 35 glorious decorative effects, plus countless variations. They range from more familiar techniques such as colorwashing and antiquing to exciting new effects such as cissing paint, which creates a play of light between a matte and a glossy surface by brushing an emulsion of acrylic paint over a dry coat of gloss. Each technique contains a list of essential ingredients, step-by-step photographs and a close-up of the finished surface or object. All elements of the home are covered, from walls, floors, and woodwork to furnishings and even individual objects such as lamp bases and picture frames. As well as the basic technique, further swatches illustrate a range of alternative colorways. Many of the effects featured in the book can be equally at home in contemporary or historical, sophisticated or informal settings, and to illustrate this versatility further, inspirational photographs show the techniques in different settings.

With more than 400 color photographs, Kevin McCloud's Complete Book of Paint and Decorative Techniques is an unrivaled reference. Whether you want to revamp a dull room, devise a striking color scheme, or restore your home in accurate period detail, this book has the information and inspiration you need.

      2 out of 5 stars This McCloud's no Highlander.......2001-01-30

This book was a pretty big disappointment. While McCloud does offer a strong presentation of color theory, he does not use realistic examples or materials in a way that someone could take advantage of his color knowledge. As an art historian he seems facinated with the techniques and materials that were used centuries ago. And while McCloud may have plenty of time to travel to France to purchase beautiful, pure, oxidized pigments and then mix them with homemade rabbit glue and curdled-milk concoctions to paint his wall, I for one and happy to have to folks at Lowes mix and shake for me. After all, most of us are just weekenders in this home improvement thing. All said and done, there's not much material about applying "regular" paint to a wall in such a way as to create interesting results. Great pictures, solid color theory (although color theory's been pretty well established for hundreds of years now), lots of info on how to mix paint like they did long ago -- not worth it.

3 out of 5 stars Interesting and informative.......2006-11-24

Carter's book gives a wide-ranging look at many aspects of decorative painting. He starts with a brief introduction, followed by a gallery covering just about every room in the house in his bold, dramatic painted treatments - the cover give just of his interior examples. Take that as an inspriation or warning, as you see fit.

Next, he gives brief descriptions of many basic techniques, including multilayered washes of color, spattering, dragging, marbling, woodgrain finishes and others. This could have been a great resource, but lacks the detail and clarity needed for a do-it-yourselfer to have much chance of success. The project section includes two samples of furniture decoration, but the large majority describe room decorations. Again, I found the directions improvable, especially because I already had reservations about the wisdom or practicality of a beginner tackling such large projects with unfamiliar materials and techniques. I really had to wonder, too, about whether I'd like to live in a room decorated in faux leopard fur by means of stamps cut from potatos.

The last sections present primers on paints, solvents, media, and surface preparation (primers included, if you'll pardon the pun). This is epsecially helpful for special problems, including metallic and masonry surfaces. In most other ways, though, other books are better for the fussy bits of technique, materials, and suggestions for approachable projects.

I checked this book out of the library to determine if it was one I would like to add to my collection.

The first half of the book "Inspirations" showed different rooms with various faux finishes and paint, none of which were detailed. The second half of the book was divided into "Technique and Effects", "Projects" and "Directory of paints and surfaces".

"Technique and Effects" addresses the various techniques, i.e. sponging, splattering, combing, strie and others. Generally there were 1-2 small (about 2" x 4-5") close-up photos of the specific technique. The instructions for the technique followed with a few illustrations, not photographs. Some sections did not have illustrations, just text instruction of the technique (antiquing, aging wood and trompe l'oeil).

      "Projects" included things like:
      - Crackle-glazed headboard (basic and brief)
      - Opulent hallway (some weird star-like spots that seemed more appropriate for a child's room or maybe a celestial theme)
      - Faux Fur Interior (walls painted in a leopard-print using potatos)
      - Theatrical Drawing Room (very amateurish looking).

There WERE several nice projects such as the:
      - Empire Style Salon which used Trompe l'oeil panels (no detailed instructions)
      - Townhouse Suite with Blue and white striped walls (again just brief steps)
      - Silhouetted Salon - very unusual technique and kind of a stylized art painting of a figure done in a navy color
      - Stone Blocked Bathroom - brief instructions but think I could follow this one without too much trouble

"Directory" discusses different type of finishes and how they are used; exterior and how to paint various objects (gutters, brick, doors); tiles/ceramic/glass and plastic. I found this section very informative, even though it did not go into a great amount of detail on each component but it was helpful information.

This book may be great for someone who already does faux-finishing, but I felt it lacked details for the beginner. I do think there are much better books out there for learning paint techniques which go into more detail. You might want to try Fresh Paint by Glenwood Sherry, Walls that Wow from Country Sampler Decorating Ideas (even though many of their techniques are not country) and Great Paint Finishes for a Gorgeous Home by Gary Lord

I have been a professional faux painter for over 5 years. This is the book I turn to when a client is looking for something unusual. The photos provide endless, timeless finishes and designs. I have spent countless hours poured over Mr. Carter's book and I always find a little something in the pictures that I can turn into a 'new' look. The current 'in-style' colors may change, but that is the beauty of paint! Change the colors and you have a new look. As I always say, the best ideas usually begin as someone else's!

        5 out of 5 stars Great Manual!.......2007-10-05

I actually found this in the bargain books section at Borders about a year ago for $2.99! It's fantastic! The beginning explains not only tools you'll need, but tools of the trade in general. It has photographs of every tool, and explains the uses. After every topic, there is a chart which sums up the uses, and how to's. For example, it has a chart on pretty much every surface you might consider painting, and explains the best ways to clean, and prep them. The recipes for the paint colors are clear, and the instructions to acheive the finished looks are also clear. As with any book, it is important to read it, not just look at the pictures, and as with any instruction manual, it is important to take a chance and actually try the project yourself. Overall, even if I had paid $20.00 or more, I would've been happy with this book. It's great for a personal project library.

My 8 year old granddaughter did very well with the drawing part. She still does not seem to be interested in the painting yet. I think 8 years old is a little young for most for this type of kit. They are still in the watercolor stage, which for them is easier.

5 out of 5 stars Great for Kids.......2003-05-25

Although I am 25 years old, I bought this book because I love Wyland's work and was curious about how he drew his sea creatures. It came with brushes, some acrylic paints, drawing paper, pencils, and a book giving instruction on how to draw and paint (all in a hard cover folder). It is definetly worth the price and would be a great start up book for kids interested in sea art.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent simplification of popular painting techniques........1997-12-01

Compared to other books on this subject, which are sometimes overly complex, this is great encouragement to the amateur decorator. Each type of paint treatment is covered step-by-step, with photographs.

There are numerous full-color photographs on every page, which help the reader visualize how each technique might apply to their decorating needs.

The only drawback is that most of the photographs are of professionally painted walls, not amateur results. Nonetheless, this book is very helpful to those interested in dressing up their boring walls.
