Everyone loves potluck parties. Recognizing this, Tamara Weiss offers Potluck at Midnight Farm, a collection of 130 potluck recipes contributed by her friends and neighbors in Martha's Vineyard, Massachusetts. The island is home not only to Midnight Farm, the gift shop Weiss owns with Carly Simon, but also to cooks whose recipes strike just the right relaxed yet sophisticated note. Their dishes, from Lighthouse Lasagna and Grilled Striped Bass with Wasabi and Ginger to Roasted Pecan Coffee Cake and Diane Sawyer's Cherry Pie, are easy-to-do crowd pleasers. Cooks interested in recipes for a wide range of informal gatherings--from backyard dinners to bring-your-own picnics--will find the book a valuable culinary resource.

"I am an organizer," says Weiss, and to prove it she offers useful tips for successful potluck events. (Pick a main course to give to food-bringing guests; direction is an obvious but often overlooked example.) The recipes are arranged by season and include menus like the one featuring Coriander Chicken, Beetroot Salad, Grilled Striped Bass with Papaya-Lime Sauce, and Fresh Fruit Tart, among other dishes. Other menus are equally appealing. With 190 color photos of the gatherings in various island locales, tips, and a foreword by Carly Simon, the book is a can't-miss guide to informal entertaining. --Arthur Boehm

Book Description

Potlucks are the friendliest of gatherings. As guests take part in the festivities, sharing their contributions—a dish of pasta, a bottle of wine, a bunch of wildflowers—they share a bit of themselves. Author Tamara Weiss knows this well. A self-described “organizer, assembler, and table setter,” she has all the qualities of the consummate host, as well as years of experience attending and planning potlucks. In Potluck at Midnight Farm, Tamara has captured a year of potlucks on Martha’s Vineyard, from brunches in a backyard garden to grill fests at twilight beside the sea. Each season brings together new faces, old friends, beautiful settings, and great food.

Collected here are more than a hundred recipes from Tamara and her guests, plus gorgeous photographs of the parties, so you too can share in the celebrations and garner ideas to create your own inspired gatherings. These dishes, at once lovely and hearty, are offered by people from all walks of life, from the island teacher to the world-famous celebrity. Each recipe is personalized with a brief anecdote of how the dish came about or why it has become such a party staple. All are wonderfully delicious. There are foods for every season and occasion: Mary Steenburgen’s Corn Spoon Pudding, Daphne’s Fried Chicken (which Bill Styron has served to Bill Clinton), and Grilled Corn Guacamole. Plus superb salads, like Tamara’s Summer Salad, with greens, sugar snap peas, mangoes, and sunflower seeds, and desserts to rave about: Lambert’s Cove Lemon Tea Cake, Judy Belushi Pisano’s Georgia Peaches with Raspberry Sauce, and the ultimate Butterscotch Brownies.

Potluck at Midnight Farm celebrates with charm and class the perfect companionship of food and entertaining, and welcomes readers just as if they were guests. And Tamara gives you all the advice and inspiration you need to send you running to organize your own spectacular potlucks.

5 out of 5 stars Why buy a martha's vineyard book if you don't get martha's vineyard??!!.......2005-08-22

I read the reviews and had to grin. Martha's vineyard has a groove,..a flow all it's own,..and it is what it is. If you don't get Martha's Vineyard,..then I can understand why alot of people don't get the book. I was bothered by the celebrity comments,..because on the island everyone mixes with everyone,...leather faced fisherman,..the town bar fixtures and awesome characters and yes even the celebrities. Good book for those who love the island, and get the mind set.

4 out of 5 stars Simply a beautiful book!.......2002-09-28

This book was given to me as a hostess gift during our first cocktail party (Ina Garten and Barefoot Contessa inspired) from a friend who knows that I love all things New England, especially Cape Cod and the Islands.

The photographs are delicious in and of themselves, even inspiring a few unusual bouquets of flowers and eclectic ideas for table settings. There are a few recipes that seem unappealing to me, but that is true of any book. An author simply cannot please everyone! For the most part I have found these recipes to have different and creative twists on many favorite flavors.

I recommend this book to anyone who has an interest in the "magical" element of the Vineyard as well as its' celebrity life. This is certainly not a book for those who want to throw hot dogs on the grill behind a split -evel home - not that there is anything wrong with that! It is for those who want to add an element of style to their backyard picnic behind that same split-level home. Potluck at Midnight Farm is about doing things with grace, that is, a Vineyard-style grace.

1 out of 5 stars This is not the Vineyard.......2002-09-24

The New York Times was right: This book makes the Vineyard look like "a minimal-security prison for the criminally self-absorbed". There are so many better Vineyard-based cookbooks (like The Martha's Vineyard Cookbook--out now in its 3rd edition!)

The recipes are so-so but the text you have to wade through to get to them will ruin your appetite.

3 out of 5 stars fun to own but you dont need to have.......2002-07-29

i bought the book because i have spent 25 years going to martha's vineyard--the book is inspiring because it makes you want to have a potluck party at your own home--but dont buy it simply for the recipes--they are fine--buy it because its a fun addition to your collection and inspires you to celebrate family and friends-- and martha's vineyard--
the author's friends (whom she touts as a very eclectic group) happen to include all of the island's celebs---which does make it fun to look at the pics and read their recipes--

5 out of 5 stars What started it all.......2007-02-16

I was 11 when I was given this book by my parents. That was all it took for me to become completely obsessed with creating these little worlds of tiny people. Granted, this isn't the most sophisticated of all books on the subject, but it is extremely accessible. Now, 14 years later, I still have most, if not all, of the furniture I made by using patterns from this book. The materials are inexpensive and very easy to find - on a child's allowance I was able to do a lot. This is still, hands down, my sentimental favorite.

3 out of 5 stars Quality of projects not too great, but very good photos.......2002-08-16

I was disappointed over the quality of the minatures featured in this book. They seemed way too amateur-ish and uninventive. I feel the author could have tried a little harder in making more creative and sophisticated designs rather than boring, suburban-lazy type she displayed in this book. The designs reminded me of those ugly crocheted blankets you see in the typical housewife or granny's home. It's a great hobby with alot of potential; unfortunately, the only people who take it up have no sense whatsoever of aesthetics.

The up side of this book is that it includes alot of color photos and detailed instructions, if you are inclined to make these dull pieces at home.

5 out of 5 stars a book full of wonderful and creative ideas.......2000-02-10

i found this book by chance in waldens. i have always had a fascination with miniatures and dollhouses, maybe because of my modest childhood. however, my interest in miniatures was sparked by the discovery of this book. boulton does an excellent job with explaining the miniture making process. as always, the DK company provides clear and colorful illustrations on making miniatures. i love this book and would recommend it to anyone who is an advanced miniaturist or novice.

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful book for children and adults. Great How-To !.......1999-03-15

My Mother gave her copy of the book to my granddaughter who is 8 yrs old. Now she can't wait to get home from school to work on her latest project for her dolls or doll house. Sometimes it is a Mother-Daughter project but not always.

3 out of 5 stars Beautiful photos, but *NOT* a sourcebook.......2002-03-12

This book is filled with gorgeous photos of exquisite dollhouse rooms. However, I would hardly call it a sourcebook, since it doesn't mention the sources for any of the items or materials. Had it contained directions for making the projects, and/or information on where to buy them, I would have loved it. Instead, I'll use the photos for inspiration -- but certainly not as a sourcebook, since no sources are mentioned.

5 out of 5 stars Great Source Book.......2000-11-07

If you are looking for inspriation, this is a wonderful book. There are many full page photos, all in color, of some of the finest miniatures ever produced. The chapters start with the house itself, then examines each major room found in most houses. This is a must-have coffee table book for all miniaturists.

The book has alot of period houses and interiors to look at. The picture detailing is great but the book lacks alot of instruction. What instruction it has is informative but is inconsistant. I only recommend this if you are very artistic and creative already and can figure out how to create these lovely houses.

                  Book Description

Peter Eisenman has been an innovative presence in the field of architecture and architectural theory for more than thirty years. Architect, educator, founder and director of the Institute for Architecture and Urbanism, he has given definition to the principal debates on the architecture of our past, present, and future. In this remarkable collection, nineteen of his most important essays are presented together for the first time. Generously illustrated and with a new introduction by the author, these writings assemble the ideas that both set and provoked contemporary architectural practice and theory. This collection ranges from comprehensive theoretical analyses to close readings of Eisenman's own work and that of such architects as Andrea Palladio, Ludwig Mies van der Rohe, Le Corbusier, Alison and Peter Smithson, James Stirling, Philip Johnson, and John Hedjuk. Providing new perspectives on these architects and on Eisenman's own methodologies, these writings present an insider's appraisal of the polemics that have defined architecture over the past half century and that continue as one of the major ongoing forces in the discourse today.

One of the first steps in garden design is finding an appropriate match of gardening and architectural styles. If you happen to love English cottage gardens and live in a sleek, modern house, this blending can be especially difficult. Inside Out presents plenty of positive inspiration for people struggling with this stylistic dilemma and may provide you with the just the ideas you've been searching for. Over a dozen different homes and gardens have been included here, each with a totally unique style. Ranging from a weathered summer house in Connecticut to an ultramodern desert retreat, each home has achieved an amazing blending of indoor and outdoor living space. Lush photos emphasize the particular areas of each house where this blending is at its most delightful, with an equal amount of views taken from inside and outside of the actual home. One small garage of a turn-of-the-century mansion is surrounded by old stone walls, lush terraces, and surprising spaces for sitting. The transformation the owners accomplished in creating this space from a debris-filled pit is tremendous, and the result is a serene escape from city life. The tropical-island space created in Miami is an altogether different story, crowded as it is with varieties of palm trees, vibrant flowers, and a spring-fed pool. The pool was transformed from its original rectangular shape and chlorinated water to a natural-looking blue-green pond framed with ferns, irregular decking, and a small waterfall. No matter what your taste or style, here you'll find gorgeous landscapes that showcase the best of the art of indoor-outdoor living. --Jill Lightner

The artist-blacksmith's world comes to life in a survey of those who shape iron into lovely works of art as well as useful objects. No longer is the blacksmith regulated to horseshoes and repairs: today they produce architectural embellishments and public art and here over four hundred color photos illustrate such objects, which appear both in public and in the home. A lovely set of inspirational ironwork pieces makes for a winning survey.

11 years after the publication of "Painted Ladies," Elizabeth Pomada returned to San Francisco to gaze anew upon its Victorians, and found a new concern for authenticity, subtlety, and sophistication in what she now calls the "Colorist Movement." The examples she shows here, while still splendidly detailed and richly pigmented, are for the most part less gaudy than those in the first book, reflecting the emergence of yuppies onto the preservationist stage earlier occupied by hippies and radicals. Almost the best part of the book, however, is the many interiors she has included, often by houseowners with a keen interest in authentic restoration. Architecture and interior-decorating buffs alike will want to own this volume.

If ever you want to be inspired, transformed, bowled over or "wowwed" by the possibilities of an old house... Read the Pomada/Larsen series. The pictures are breathtakenly beautiful and the text is quite informative. Lots of 'pearls of wisdom' there. Before you buy that victorian, read this book for some informative information. After you buy--keep reading (like a litany) to keep the vision alive amidst the rubble and asbestos. You won't be sorry ---you will be renewed. Book Description

"A house is an idea, a house is a thing, a house is you, a tangible embodiment of your dreams and desires and interests. Your house has its own personality and continuity and unity. Its parts come together as your home."

And so Mariette Himes Gomez introduces us to the philosophy and aesthetic of Houses, the stunning follow–up to her phenomenal design debut, Rooms. As the award–winning interior designer explains, a house becomes a home only when it is infused with personal touches; when its individual parts flow together logically; and when it assumes a warm and welcoming character.

Gomez begins by inviting us to consider the many elements that unify a house. We watch as she unfolds every detail–from the doors, fireplaces, and staircase, to the more conceptual elements of balance, color, and movement– revealing how each factor contributes to a home's overall aesthetic, and how each can be controlled to create a certain effect. She then provides practical guidelines for building, buying, or renovating the perfect home for you.

                          Houses illustrates:

                        • The natural order of houses: how space, hierarchies, geography, and scale work together

                        • The relation of rooms to house: how to create movement and harmony in your overall design

                        • Stories, treasures, and memorabilia: how to place art, mirrors, and other personal touches for best results

                        • Conceal and reveal: control privacy and light through the effects of windows, doors, architecture, and lighting

                        • The character of rooms and their place in the house: how to choose a suitable layout for a new kitchen or children's room

                        • Amenities: how to include those necessary extras, from the family room to the luxurious home theater

                        • The plan: how to craft a budget that works for you

Complementing Gomez's invaluable advice are stunning photographs of the interiors, exteriors, and details of breathtaking homes. The definitive guide for every design–minded home buyer, builder, or renovator, Houses illuminates the world of possiblity that opens up to you when you create your own home.

                          Book Description

The popular language of status-conscious architecture is explored in this account of the notorious do-it-yourself remodels clustered on the fringe of Beverly Hills in West Hollywood. These former stucco bungalows have been transformed by their owners into distinctive visual statements. As if they were stage sets, the exteriors of these houses have been treated as interiors, with urns and finials placed on rooftops like bibelots on a mantel, and windows and panels of trellis arranged as though they were pictures on a wall. The result is a lively architectural vernacular, well documented with "before and after" photos, interviews, and construction details.

                            Book Description

Putting people first--an integrated approach to architecture and psychology that opens up a fresh landscape of design alternatives Introducing a different architectural approach that transcends fixed notions of style, this book emphasizes seeing and enhancing the close connections that link both architect and occupant as well as the material, symbolic, and human aspects of designed spaces. It draws from the rich realm of archetypal psychology to show how in moving from inside out--from people's activities, dreams, and desires to the creation of space--architecture can be truly transformative.

Norman McGrath's PHOTOGRAPHING BUILDINGS INSIDE AND OUT (2ND EDITITON) is an excellent source for information. While view cameras are the way to go, they are not always the most convienient. McGrath discusses equipment selection - camera, lenses, tripods, heads, meters, filters and film. His case studies (taken from his portfolio) show a body of work and what was done to due to the existing conditions: tight spaces, different light temperatures, auxiliary lighting, etc. He also discussed different perspectives of the same room/building, as well as prop suggestions to complement the subject.

It has been said that "Architecture is in the details" so, too, is it with photography. His "numerous case studies to illustrate his methods and techniques... clearly explains his objectives for each shoot and demonstrates how, with attention to the smallest deatails, he achieves successful results every time." (Excerpt taken from the back cover.)

As a designer, I found it very helpful in photographing my own work for my portfolio as well as capturing the spirit of the place. I highly recommend it to anyone interested in photographing architecture and/or interiors for fun or profit.

McGrath is one of the most well-published architectural photographers of recent memory, and this book does a great job of highlighting his work in a variety of situations. Unfortunately, this book tends at times to become more of McGrath's portfolio and less a guide to the art and technique of architectural photography. Worth getting just to look at the photos, but also get either Gerry Kopelow's or Michael Harris's books for another perspective.
