5 out of 5 stars Excellent edible plants teaching book!.......2001-08-18

This was the book that started it all for me...and I've been researching and eating edible plants for about 10 years now. This by far the best book for children to learn about wild edibles that I've ever seen. It's also great for "expeditions" into the outdoors, and crafts, too. There's so much this book has to offer!

5 out of 5 stars Easy Edible Wild Foods.......2000-07-23

This book is wonderful for everyone interested in edible wild plants, even if you don't have children at home with whom to share to fun. The instructions are clear. The recipes are better than I've found in any other book. Whether you are in the city or in the country, you'll find this book helpful. Only a few plants are featured but these are ones anyone can find and use.

5 out of 5 stars Field guide for gathering and cooking wild foods with kids.......1998-11-02

As a parent, I am always looking for neat things to do out doors with my toddlers, 2 and 4. Since we live in the country, playgrounds and best friends are out of the picture. We depend on nature for fun. This book is thoughtfully and carefully writte, presenting clear directions on how to identify wild foods (colour pictures included), gather, process and cook. Enjoy cat-tail corn on the cob, or use acorn flour to make pancakes. this book combines my children's favorite activities - hiking and eating.

A longtime collector of corkscrews, author Donald A. Bull first displayed the breadth of his collection in The Ultimate Corkscrew Book, an extensive volume spanning the diversity and creativity of corkscrew production over the last several hundred years. Now with the companion guide, Bull's Pocket Guide to Corkscrews, collectors and dealers are once again invited to explore remarkable examples of corkscrews. From figurals and eclectic corkscrews to corkscrew knives, rare and novelty varieties are well represented. For easy reference, all corkscrews are classified categorically along with their current market values.

Bull's books on corkscrews are simply the best for describing the types, patents and prices of these facinating little devices. Bull is a passionate collector as well as being an irreverent and hilarious man. For a thoroughly pleasant diversion, visit his web site to learn and laugh. Wonderful.

5 out of 5 stars Types, prices, patents, all in one with pictures........1999-03-08

This book is a must for the corkscrew collector, and for the wine enthusiast as well. It presents in a user friendly fashion the major types of corkscrews, with pictures and patent details, all one wants to know about this screwy subject. The pictures are great, and it is a good reference book.

              Book Description

Robert Rauschenberg (b. 1925) began to investigate the boundaries between painting and sculpture in the 1950s, working with a variety of found objects in his Combine paintings and freestanding Combines. Later, in his Cardboard series (1971--72), he confined himself to the use of cardboard boxes, eliminating virtually all imagery, reducing the palette to a near monochrome, and commenting in subtle ways on the materialism and disposability of modern life. This book is the first to focus exclusively on Rauschenberg’s rarely seen Cardboards, along with related works from his Made in Tampa Clay, Cardbirds, Egyptian, and Venetian series.
Approximately eighty-eight Cardboards and related sculptural pieces, many from the artist’s personal collection, are reproduced in the book. Full provenance and exhibition history are provided for each work, along with a complete bibliography. In addition, distinguished scholar Yve-Alain Bois offers an insightful essay that discusses the Cardboards and situates these lesser-known but critical pieces within the context of Rauschenberg’s long and creative career.

Now The Cardboard Box Book celebrates that spirit by showing Junior (and his parents) exactly how to turn cardboard boxes of all sizes into amazing craft projects, toys, and games. Make an airplane, a tepee, a climbing wall for your action figure, a magnetic fishing game, a coat of arms, or a drum kit. With a little more time, Junior and an adult friend can create their own zoo, playhouse, or aquarium. Amusing text and practical directions make thinking outside the box a breeze!

I dated the author for a short time 5 years ago. Before I read Stacy's book I was aware of some of her terrible life experiences, but had no idea the severity of them. I hope that "The Cardboard Box" might have some positive impact on people that read it, and realize that there is always a way out, maybe you don't have it as bad as you think, and you can overcome adversity if you have enough heart. To Stacy...you touched my heart and I cried for you after reading this, I'm sorry that things went the way they did, but I am glad that you have persevered, let god guide you, and turned things around the best that you can. God Bless....

                      Book Description

Self-proclaimed genius inventor Alex is convinced that his little brother Jonathan is evil. The kid never shuts up. He's a klutz, and he drools on his pillow when he sleeps. Jonathan's specialty, though, is sticking to Alex like glue -- and sticking his nose into his big brother's business. That's why Alex has to leave Planet Earth and fly so far away that no one will ever be able to find him. Using cardboard, duct tape, old odds and ends and his amazing scientific imagination, Alex builds Star Jumper, a spaceship that will deliver him from his rotten little brother forever! It's a plan only a cardboard genius could ever hope to pull off. But Jonathan has other ideas -- and a secret that ultimately brings forth Alex's most brilliant creation ever!

Alex got 10 boxes of cardbord. He started to build a star jumper. then he went into the atic and got himself a space suit. then he got into his sta-r jumper and blasted off!

I like this book because it was about space. I would recommend this book to a 7 year old who is an advanced reader. Anyone who is interested in science and space will like this book. review written by a 7 year old boy

5 out of 5 stars boys book club choice.......2006-05-12

I am a teacher who thought my boys book club for 3rd, 4th, and 5th graders would like "Star Jumper". They loved the book from page 1, even the boys who are usually reluctant readers!!! Their parents commented on how eagerly their children read this book. By the way, we were inspired to build our own cardboard spaceship. A real winner!!

5 out of 5 stars Invention and Sibling Rivalry - What More Could a Boy Ask for?.......2006-04-03

Today I read Star Jumper: Journal of a Cardboard Genius, by Frank Asch. This is a quick and accessible read, which I would put at about a third grade reading level. Alternatively, it could suit older reluctant readers, especially boys.

The book is about a boy named Alex who has a keen interest in scientific invention, a healthy ego, and a pesky six-year-old brother named Jonathan. In order to get away from Jonathan, the bane of his existence, Alex decides to build a spaceship out of cardboard boxes, and travel across the universe. Using odds and ends from around his house, he invents all of the necessary trappings for space travel: the ship, the space suit, the oxygen generator, the atom slider, and the micro blaster (you'll have to read the book for the details). But before Alex can leave town (yes, the spaceship really does fly), Jonathan reveals his own capacity for invention, and throws a wrench into the works.

I think that this book will have considerable appeal for young boys, thanks to the details of the spaceship and the other inventions. I think that for boys who have annoying younger brothers, the book may be irresistible. The sibling rivalry is realistically depicted, as are the caring psychologist parents. I personally found Alex's ego a bit off-putting (he keeps going on about what a genius he is), but I think that the book's target audience will be able to relate to this.

What I love about this book are the illustrations. This is a chapter book, but scattered throughout the text are small black and white illustrations, drawings from Alex's journal. My favorite is a map of the universe, labeled "me" at one end, and "Jonathan" at the other end. Anyone who has ever had a younger sibling will immediately relate to this drawing. There's also a drawing of Jonathan as a baby, saying his first words: "I'll tell Mom". Oh, the joy of younger brothers!

As you might expect in a children's book that addresses sibling rivalry, the book does conclude with some resolution of the conflict between Alex and Jonathan. But it's far from heavy handed, and seemed to me realistic rather than overdone.

So, if you have a child who is fascinated by space travel, or who likes to invent things from ordinary household objects, or who is driven to distraction by a younger sibling, you should give Star Jumper: Journal of a Cardboard Genius a try. You won't regret it.

4 out of 5 stars Star Jumper Journal of a Cardboard Genius.......2006-03-02

After reading this book, you'll want to go buy a roll of duct tape and get a few boxes. Young genius Alex can tackle any challenge with a little cardboard and that famous tape. A lively story of two brothers: One genius, the other obnoxious. Or is he? Big brother Alex, a math whiz kid, will soon remove himself from the dread of little brother Jonathan, as his Star Jumper spaceship leaps him to another corner of the galaxy. But Jonathan has ideas of his own, and reveals HIS inventive side.

5 out of 5 stars A wonderful book for anyone redecorating or renovating an older home or any home!.......2007-02-02

I read the reviews and purchased this book, and it quickly became one of my favorites. This book is full of wonderful ideas and is photographed room by room. This southern plantation was built in the mid 1800's and has an original historical photograph, as well as, a before and after shot in the magnificent entry hall...what a transformation. Not only was the interior fabulous, but it also has gorgeous photographs of the grounds, as well. Have recommended to friends who love it as much as I, but could make one a little pea-green with envy...Carolyn is living my life! Would like to know if anyone knows of an antique shop that looks like this fabulous home because I have never seen one and my girlfriends and I would love to go there!!!
My advice, if you love decorating books this is a must have because every page is inspirational.

3 out of 5 stars Put the things you love in improbable places.......2007-01-18

Yet another collection of photographic vignettes. A table pushed in front of a door and piled high with odds and ends. A bed with five or six fabrics randomly tossed over it sitting in front of a kitchen cabinet. Not what most would consider practical design. These photos could have been taken in any antique shop--except for the chicken coop. Add some homey little titles like: "The dining room is for sharing" or "in the bedroom I surround myself with things I love". If you enjoy bedroom items in the kitchen or vice versa, this book is a must have.

5 out of 5 stars Carolyn Westbrook Home is one of my favorites!.......2006-07-31

I have a huge collection of home decorating books and Carolyn Westbrook Home is my favorite. Shot at her wonderful plantation, this book is full of glorious photography and fabulous inspiration. Her look is so diverse there is something for everyone! From the sophisticated Country-French style to her urban kitchen with black cabinets, this book is for anyone who loves great style. Nothing stale here...this is a fresh innovative approach to decorating and plus it is a good read. I heard she is also the cover for the "Where Women Create" book. I would highly recommend!

3 out of 5 stars NIce but not my style.......2006-07-05

I went by the online recommendations and while her style is nice...well its a lot of white which to me isn't practical. And more cottage meets victorian? I am more into clean lines because, well it takes a lot of work to keep up this kind of design. Great for a bed and breakfast style - would love to visit there.

Just wanted to let people know that it might not be the style they are interested in.

                        5 out of 5 stars Beautiful Images!.......2005-12-19

This is a big, beautiful, classy, timeless decorating book and one of my very favorites. What a gorgeous gift this book would make for a dear friend.

Take this book up to bed with you and settle yourself under comfy covers and with a warm soothing cup of tea. This delight will soothe your senses. Each photo is a masterpiece with beautiful details on every page. Every time I open this book I find something new and marvelous.

If I could recommend one home decorating book, "Carolyn Westbrook Home" would be the one. Can't wait for her next venture!
