Book Description
Flook has drawn on 20 years of collecting experience to create this comprehensive guide to knives used by British and Commonwealth military personnel over the past 150 years. Pieces from the Victorian era, WWI, WWII, and those used by today's forces in Australia, India, Canada, and New Zealand are covered. Many items, such as the RAF commando knife and previously unrecorded patterns of Robbins of Dudley knives, are correctly identified or illustrated for the first time.
Customer Reviews:
Excellent book about British knives.......2003-08-29
Very good review of all military knives of the British empire 1800-today.
Cover F-S Fighting knives in a good way.
Plenty of pictures.
It is something you must buy!
Comprehensive Cutlery Compendium.......1999-07-18
This is a highly impressive work. Every individual item discussed is keyed to an individual text and is often accompanied by multi-views and enlargements. In many cases, there is documentation, many of which are letters from manufacturers and government procurement agencies. There is very little referencing to previous works. This is not an omnium-gatherum nor a synthesis of existing works. It is a new beginning.
The only thing remotely as detailed or as useful is Robert Baeurlein's thorough work "Allied Fighting Knives" which is mainly about fighting knives and gives short schrift to working blades, plus most of it is about U.S. patterns and includes much more textual descriptions plus many first hand accounts.
This work divides many types of blades and edged tools up by the major Commonwealth nations wherein they were produced, beginning in the 1880s and continuing up till the present decade.
The major countries and nations covered are Great Britain, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, and India. The amount of items covered lessens the further one gets from Britain, but that is understandable. Everything including commercial knives sold to officers and explorers is covered.
There is no coverage of items produced in other Far Eastern areas for Empire and Commonwealth Forces nor anything produced in Africa, thus omitting those formerly white-ruled countries of the former Rhodesia (now Zimbablwe) and South Africa, though both are known to have local cutlery industries.
This may have been due to the lack of contacts consequent to the former political situation of sanctions, whixh precluded both commercial and social contact between Britain and those lands. Or perhapa they just did not make anything there for their forces.
As in any work of this monumentality, it is not perfect. No matter how long one works, there will always be something omitted. It is the nature of the endeavour. The author has added a chapter of last minute discoveries in his attempt to be as encyclopedic as possible. I learned much from this book and I will refer to it again in my own writings.
But, a few minor quibbles. The author fails to distinguish between the use of the two synonyms--matchet and machete. The latter being the original Spanish term and used in North America also, and the former, the official British term. Both are pronounced identically except for the e on the end--the t being silent. Because of his use of the American spelling throughout, he missed the significance of the derivation of the term for a famoous short bladed fighting instrument of WW II, the smatchet, usually pronounced to rhyme with hatchet, but again the t is silent. Smatchet is a contraction of small + matchet just as Bren is a contraction.
He also fails to recognize the tool-weapon issued to native troops of northern Burma by its true name of dah and lumps it in with machetes. He has found a few more patterns of dahs than I have. Of course, these crudely finished implements are so badly marked that moat are unreadable. And he may have included some similar tools made in southern China for local use. These are much better finished than British or Indian issued patterns.
And finally he missed a rather unusual and strange machete made in Australia in WW II. But, with those few exceptions, one with any interest in this material should buy this book. I will just give it an A not an A+. You can throw away that old copy of Stephens now.

Showcasing a wide array of works by a multitude of needle artists, this colorful volume provides quilters with wonderful inspiration, as well as an interesting dose of the history of pictorial quilts. Created to tell a story, commemorate an event, or evoke a sense of place, pictorial quilts combine traditional quilting techniques and representational images to become highly personal statements. Gordon presents an excellent overview of what it takes to design and produce such a quilt, from finding source material, choosing fabrics and colors, and adding embellishments, to understanding the specific methods (piecing, various applique types, decorative stitching). The book's second half is a detailed exploration of specific themes, including landscapes, garden scenes, fauna, and portraits, told in relation to a gallery of exquisite works by numerous artists. This is not a book for beginners or traditionalists; it is meant for experienced quilters looking to expand their horizons. There are no full-fledged step-by-step projects. Readers are instead treated to terrific analyses of what makes these quilts work, and they learn what they need to know to begin designing and making their own. --Amy Handy
Book Description
This thorough workbook shows needle artists and crafters everything they need to know about the gracious art of pictorial quilting, from how to select subject matter, fabrics, and color scheme to how to choose and carry out the right techniques.
Background information on the rich history of pictorial quilts opens the book, then subsequent chapters take the reader through all the essential stages step-by-step, from deciding on the subject to the final work of designing and finishing the quilt. Included is information about adapting photos and paintings, making sketches, laying out designs, and preparing fabrics. Piecing techniques, turned-edged and cut-and-sew appliqu, decorative and quilting stitches, 3-D effects, textural effects, and other embellishments are demonstrated. A gallery of finished quilts by contemporary artists shows a variety of styles and techniques, along with some trace-off methods and step-by-step instructions. Pictorial themes include clouds and skies, leaves and flowers, people, birds and animals, travel and transportation, and other popular motifs.
Customer Reviews:
Pretty Good Book.......2001-07-11
This book was pretty good. But I liked Free-Style Quilts by Susan E. Carlson better. I didn't think that this book went into enough details on "how to's". Although it has some nice information on things like prespective.
Nice Addition to Your Art Quilt Library.......2001-07-10
This book covers basic techniques and tools for making pictorial quilts. Great photos show different applique and quilting techniques, with lots of close-ups that give you a nice feel for the types of fabrics, stitching and embellishments used to create various effects. These are particulary helpful. But its biggest contribution is its ability to inspire by example. A wide range of pictorial quilting styles is shown, offering many ideas for how to represent flowers, leaves, water, sky, and more. I also like the quotes from various quiltmakers that provide background information on their inspiration and techniques. A must-have for any quilter who enjoys looking at or aspires to create pictorial quilts!
Pictorial Quilting.......2000-06-22
This book is a fascinating read and offers practical advice, (especially for the novice quilter like myself). Being a new person to the world of quilting, I was looking for something that was slightly different. This book offers that and more. Pictorial Quilting differs from the traditional modes of quilting, offering a new and innovative way for an individuals to transform ideas into a final pictorial quilt. Along the way readers will be able to pick up practical advice for combining colours, fabric types and how to change a picture or idea into a quilt. In addtion to the practical information, there a number of completed quilts that will inspire all levels of quilters to larger and greater heights.
Great Illustrations.......2000-06-20
The best part of this book is the illustrations of the pictorial quilts. Each illustration has a description of the technique used, with arrows pointing to specifc areas being discussed. I don't think a beginner level quilter would be able to read this book and then go out and make a pictorial quilt, but it does provide a lot of great tips and techniques for a quilter with some experience. The book briefly covers many topics. For example, there are 2 pages on choosing colors for pictorial quilts, when there are entire books devoted to choosing colors. So each topic ends up being broadly defined, but clear examples (and pictures!) are given. Overall I enjoyed the book and am looking forward to making my first pictorial quilt!

Customer Reviews:
HOW WOMEN SPOKE THROUGH THEIR QUILTS TO CHANGE THE WORLD.......2003-09-14
My husband purchased this book for me and WOW! It is packed with information regarding the common bond that women had in fellowshipping, politicking, raising money for war efforts, changing society, gaining strength to have a voice, comforting others ...all through their domestic art of quilting. A must for quilters and for anyone who has a tendency to believe that domesticity disables one from being active to change society for the good of everyone!
Interesting for all - not just women or quilters.......2002-06-21
Before I bought the book I saw the video three times. When I was watching it at home, one by one my family sat down and joined me. The panoramic view of American history through the quilts the women made from the Revolutionary War up through the 1800s was fascinating and touching. An excellent video and an excellent book.
Hearts and Hands.......2001-09-13
I used the accompanying video in a workshop I taught at the University level. What a heartwarming and accurate trip through womens' history, linking us to them through a common craft. The book successfully informs us of their political and social challenges as we view the gorgeous creations of their hands. The music score is vital to portraying the feeling, as well, and is perfect to the subject.
I recommend viewing the video for any who are interested in womens' history or in the folkart of quilting.
American Women "Revealed" through their Quilting.......1999-07-08
The story of how women used quilts not only as bedcoverings, but as mementos of their friends, artistic expressions in bleak lives, political commentary when they didn't have the vote, fundraising, slogan flags--more ways than imagined! Quilts were even considered a symbol of women's repression at one time! An interesting slant on the role of women in American history (the keepers of morality!). Excellent pictures, great inspirations, and lots of fun! This book was the reference basis for the book and movie "How to Make an American Quilt."
Book Description
Abundantly illustrated index to traditional quilting patterns, with designs organized according to most prominent geometric configuration — star (Blazing Sun), triangle (Birds in Air), circle (Pickle Dish), square (Stained Glass), many combinations. Includes 139 new quilt patterns. Indispensable to quilters, collectors, folk art lovers.
Customer Reviews:
PATTERNS?.......2007-09-04
I AM QUITE DISAPPOINTED IN THIS BOOK. WHEN THE TITLE SAYS PATTERNS, THAT'S WHAT I EXPECTED. THERE IS NO RHYME OR REASON TO THE SIZES OF THE SQUARES, THERE ARE NO PATTERNS OR INSTRUCTIONS, ONLY PICTURES.
Great reference for quilt blocks.......2005-09-01
This book is not for beginners because it doesn't have any directions, just blocks. But if you need new quilting ideas, this is a great book. The blocks are not in grid format (like "It's Okay if You Sit on My Quilt" by Mary Ellen Hopkins) but I like it just as well. Good source to look at if you have quilting software, like "Quilt-Pro" or "Electric Quilt" and want to design your own quilt.
Beautiful designs but no instructions.......2004-10-05
I love the variety in block designs, however, I'm not all that ingenious with calculations to figure out what I need for a 12inch finished piece. I'll eventually figure out how to make some of my favorites-with trial and error I'm sure- Instructions would save me a lot of time and fabric. In all I'm sure there are better books out there for someone like me who's not a math wiz.
Great Book, Great Price.......2002-09-19
Leave it to Dover Books to print this beautiful book! It is very affordable, and is a compendium of a huge assortment of quilt blocks, indexed by theme or name. Love this book and I am a beginning quilter.
a good reference for "theme" block (No instructions).......2002-05-18
LOVED this book! though only illustrated in BLACK and WHITE. Used its INDEX to find something "themed". ie. several wedding related blocks for a wedding block sampler quilt. Then went on the web, to find instructions on that pattern, now that it had a name.
Also, since it is drafted 5 squares to the inch graph paper as the book recommends. It is easy to trace and color, made my own blocks 12" square.
Also it is a good place to start if you're looking for some inspirational design. The great thing about this book is that it is black and white, so there is no judgment on personal choice of color. My goal is to make one block from every illustration. So far I made 8.

Book Description
The Mule Train, about 150 people in twenty mule-drawn wagons from Marks, Mississippi, was determined to make the nation aware of the plight of America's poor. The Mule Train is commemorated in this collection of photographs by Roland Freeman and others accompanied by excerpts from local and national newspapers.
Customer Reviews:
It captured the peoples dreams and hopes for equality........1998-10-28
I was impressed at the magnificent way that this book brought to light the struggle and dreams of the Mule Train participants. Their beleifs that what was transpiring would make a difference, not just for them, but for all of America. The committment of Mr. Willie Bolden, tasked with the responsibility to see that all went well. His determination and others that dispite several roadblocks insured all travelers were taken care of. The reporting by Jean Pond-Smith showed the realness of this movement without being bias or prejudicial. Her capture of the spirit of the travelers were enligntening and heartwrenching. This book brought home to me many memories that I had long ago moved to the back of mind. That I, along with with mother and three of my sisters were a part of this moment in history.
Book Description
Rich selection of album quilt designs known as Baltimore Bride's designs, ideal not only for quilting but for a variety of arts and crafts purposes. This book contains designs, mostly florals, for 81 different quilt blocks and borders, offering quilters, artists and craftspeople a dazzling selection of motifs.
Customer Reviews:
Good depending on your use.......2004-04-06
I was hopeful that this book might add a different aspect to my other quilting books. There are no instructions for the patterns...though any quilter with any experience could easily put the designs together. Also, the patterns are not to size, that is unless you prefere miniature quilts. All of the designs are sketched on a page, some have 2 to a page, and are all in black and white. There are no pictures of any of the completed designs. If you plan to use this book for quilting it would make for a complicated quilting motif.
Here is what I will probably do with it:
1. Make a copy of a design so that I can use colored pencils to help me visualize the pattern I want to make. (Keep the book clean!)
2. Make an enlarged copy (or 2) to make freezer paper templates to use in the applique design.
Someone only interested in the designs could also use them to make cards, embroidery, quilting motifs, and possibly decorate other artful crafts.
Having said that, had I seen this book in the store I would most likely NOT have purchased it but since I have I will make the most out of it. This is definitely not for a beginner quilter who would need and appreciate directions and guidance on putting the designs together. However, I think that it will be a helpful aid in the future.
Great addition to Baltimore patterns.......2000-06-22
This book is a great addition to the Baltimore Album style patterns you already have. There are no instructions just blocks showing the patterns. I enlarged them to fit my block size and many of them I have not seen any where else. There are also border ideas shown toward the back. I think this is a good book and a wonderful asset to any quilter's library.

A "to die for" book for quilters.......1997-02-18
This book is by far the most beautiful and informative book I have ever owned. It is also the biggest and heaviest book I have ever carried out of a store. It is full of wonderful prints of quilts of all kinds and from history as well as today. The text is fascinating as you read about the truth of the history of quilting, about quilts done by the people of different modern cultures and about the trends and exciting things happening in quilting today. I am sure this book will bring hundreds of hours of enjoyment both in the reading and in the gazing again and again at the prints

misleading title.......2000-03-08
I had typed quilt into the search and this title was among those listed. Being from NY I was curious and asked for more info. At the top of the Table of Contents is the phrase "piecing the quilt" - followed by chapters that I thought were quilt block names. Although there is beautiful photography thru out the book and in hard cover version - it would make a great coffee table book - I had thought I was ordering a book featuring quilt block patterns about the Adirondacks!
