      4 out of 5 stars A good overview.......2005-08-07

I'm no avid garage saler or flea marketer, but I picked this book up from the library to see what some of my stuff might be worth.

The author first gives some tips on how to buy and sell goods, what to look for condition-wise, and how to learn more about a certain type of goods. Then the book lists types of collectibles in alphabetical order, giving a short history of the company or collectible, with values of some of the more valuable examples of each type listed.

Of course, such a book can't be completely comprehensive, but this one does give lots of resources (both books and individuals) for further study in each type of collectible. It seemed very heavy on pottery and dinnerware companies, but did have a good mix of other items (toys, Coca-Cola items, political buttons...). It's not really the type of book you should browse through from front to back, as I did, because it's just so overwhelming! But I did learn a little that probably stuck with me.

The word nerd in me had to smile at all the misspellings and bad grammar throughout the book, but it's a minor point.

If you're into the collectible scene, but just starting out, this would be a good starting point for you.

This must be the ultimate book for bargain collecta'billies, it has so many things that are worth scratching through the markets and greasing through the garages for. It's aim is subtle and its punch is vital, this book highlights some amazing things that "not many people know" about. For example, the amount of money that can actually be made from this itchingly glorious of all pastimes.

4 out of 5 stars Garage Sale and Flea Market Annual.......2000-10-26

The Garage Sale and Flea Market Annual contains an interesting assortment of items. Did you know that there are collectors for items such as bubble bath containers, used playing cards, cereal boxes, children's lunch boxes, and sheet music? This book lists collectibles not mentioned in other price guides. Sources for additional information in each category as well as experts are included.

5 out of 5 stars Wide variety of collectible covered.......2000-07-28

This book covers a tremendous variety of collectibles and will be very useful for the collector, established or aspiring dealer. If focuses on items made from the 1940's on, those things that most often turn up at garage sales and flea markets. Certainly the idea behind the book is to inform you of current price trends so you can spot bargains, whether for your own collection or resale. The introduction gives some generally helpful advice on sources and marketing. The impact of the internet is recognized but there are still many hands-on buying opportunities and the information here is equally useful in internet shopping. The prices listed are what are considered to be average dealer retail and do not take into account the huge premiums that some items have achieved in internet sales.

Thousands of items are listed in nearly 500 pages. The categories are too numerous to mention in detail but as you would expect, glassware, pottery and porcelain are extensively covered with many styles and manufacturers listed. A few highlights are pictured from each category and the listings are cross-sections of what is available and not intended to be complete lists of everything ever made. A brief background and sources of additional information are included for each category. This may include an expert, collector's club, newsletter or book on the subject.

Some of the other sections I found interesting are advertising character collectibles, children's books, Beatles & Elvis collectibles, cameras, cookie jars, dolls, costume jewelry, kitchen items, salt shakers, toys, and yes, even Barbie dolls and Beanie Babies. Also included are items that are just attaining collectible status with unknown potential such as calculators and transistor radios.

This is the 7th edition of the popular collectibles and antique annual. It contains over 500 pages of every type of collectible imaginable. Many items are pictured, and estimated values are included. It tells where to shop, how much to pay, holding garage sales, what's hot in today's market. A very useful guide for the novice or "expert." Each category of item is briefly described. It's arranged alphabetically, from advertising items to World's Fairs. A handy list of the names and addresses of clubs and newsletters is provided as is a listing of dealers in special interest collectibles. The dealer's address is shown, and in many cases their e-mail address. The number of collectibles included is huge. Well worth the price.

5 out of 5 stars M. Carole Waters, Alberta, Canada.......2006-03-16

I haven't used the book yet, but I have seen some of the patterns made up by other quilters and they are delightful. Also, I was pleasantly surprised to find out that the authors are from the Canadian Prairies as I am as well. I am looking forward to making up several of the patterns this summer

2 out of 5 stars Great designs BUT...................2004-05-19

I enjoy the designs in this book a lot. These are some of the most original houses and cottages I have seen . I do, however, have one serious beef with this book. The patterns that require different sections to be joined are presented as one piece only. That means you have to make several copies of the whole unit to get the various pieces to put together. This may be a bit confusing to understand in print so I'll explain further . If you've read "Quilts with Style" magazine, you'll notice that the quilts/wallhangings have individual piece patterns for you to copy and begin piecing. This book has a format much different than that.

I teach paper piecing and I know that it would be very confusing for non advanced piecers to know how to replicate the pieces. I believe "That Patchwork Place" was just trying to save more money on printing this book. They sacrificed ease of use to have less pages.

If the patterns had been presented appropriately, I would have given it 5 stars.

4 out of 5 stars A *great* Canadian book :).......2003-10-27

I fully agree with the wonderful comments made by the other two reviewers. This is a magnificent book, and I very much enjoyed reading it and drooling over all of the projects (and there are a LOT of gorgeous color photos in this book).

The only thing I didn't like about this book, was that the patterns had no seam allowances included. It's not hard to add the 1/4" s.a. to the one piece patterns, although it is an extra step that I don't think should be necessary. But consider the multi-piece patterns - having to cut the patterns into their separate pieces and then add the seam allowances to all parts ... NOT FUN!!! For example - the One-Room Schoolhouse pattern (on page 57) has 11 parts that need to be cut apart and have seam allowances added. I'd rather spend the time sewing than using my see-through ruler and pencil :)

                5 out of 5 stars Best Paper-pieced book ever!.......2001-10-23

This book clearly illustrates how to create the most beautiful, whimsical quilts quickly and easily. I am not an expert quilter, but people are amazed when they see the quilts I have created using this book. All projects are beautiful...I promise, you'll want to make every one of them! The possibilities are endless because all blocks are interchangable. If you want to look like you know what you are doing, buy this book!

5 out of 5 stars Simple Crafters Dream.......2001-05-08

Finally, a quilt design book that is simple enough for a beginner to learn, yet challenging for the experienced. I had never paper pieced before I got this book, it was so easy to understand the instructions. I love the country style houses and trees. They really give the designs a down home feeling. The churches and cottage scenes remind me of the countryside where I grew up. I think that the authors did a great job of making the patterns in the book flexible to each person making the quilts. Each pattern block can be substituted in different projects, making each pillow or wallhanging yours personally. I recommend this book to anyone who has never paper pieced before and would like to learn.

                  Book Description

The World of Ibn Tufayl consists of ten essays by scholars in different fields in Arab-Islamic studies on Ibn Tufayl's Hayy ibn Yaqzan, one of the most extraordinary works of medieval Arabic literature, and a text with important dimensions in social and intellectual history, literature, mysticism, philosophy, medicine and science. Most of the essays were presented at a groundbreaking conference at the Wellcome Institute in London, which marked the first attempt at a critical assessment of any medieval Arabic text by drawing together scholars from widely varying fields. The studies cast light on numerous aspects of social and intellectual life in North Africa and Spain in medieval Islamic times, and explore important aspects of the textual intercommunication between author and audience.
