Book Description
Enormous demands are placed on the control and manual dexterity of the contemporary drum set player, particularly in the Jazz idiom. Today's drummer is expected to have developed limb coordination to a degree that would have been thought unachievable a few short years ago. This text presents an effective method of dealing with the mastery of drum set coordination by breaking it down into four sections: 1) Ride Cymbal - Right hand; 2) Snare Drum - Left foot; 3) Bass Drum - Right foot; 4) High hat - Left foot.
Customer Reviews:
Excellent jazz coordination cookbook.......2005-12-27
I recently received this book and I've been working on it for more than a week. It's somehow surprising that this book is not widely known in the drumming community (at least here in Italy).
I find this book excellent. It contains many coordination exercises on 1, 2 and 3 voices (all combinations of snare drum, bass drum and hi-hat), both on swung eighths and triplets, against the jazz ride pattern. The exercises are of gradually increasing difficulty so the book would be perfect both for the beginner or the advanced jazz drummer. The review solos at the end of each chapter are musically pleasant.
Excellent!.......2004-09-28
An easy to follow progression of fundamentals leading to solos, this is a great book for staring your jazz studies. It does follow the one primary basic ride sound, but by the end I would think one would be able to improvise fairly well around that pattern.

Customer Reviews:
Good for older school agers.......2007-01-12
I bought this for my 8 year old son for Christmas. He ablsolutely LOVES the animal and bug books in Ames collection. However, this book is a bit more complicated in the drawings as far as shading and finishing touches that didn't seem to translate well in this format.
I think he may pick up something about drawing the human form through this, but right now its to complicated for him. Maybe in a few years he'll pick it up again and try some of these.
Not a bad book just not my favorite in the series. I think this might be more useful to someone older who wants to create thier own clip art like drawings maybe.
A great learning tool........2000-04-04
My compliments to Lee Ames and Creig Flessel for producing this "DRAW 50 PEOPLE" book. The step-by-step application to Mr. Flessel's wonderful drawings are an inspiration to the future artists in this world. Anyone wishing to improve their artistic skills (beginner or accomplished) would do well by following the examples in this book,(as well as the rest of the draw 50 series). I always say "There's nothing like learning from the BEST"!
Draw 50 People.......1999-12-28
Draw 50 People is a great book. The book, like others in the series, has the would-be artist drawing right away. The drawings/directions are clear, well done and easy to follow, with excellent results. It's great for kids and I even took a couple of ideas myself. I highly reccomend this book. Creig Flessel and Lee Ames did beautiful work in this book. Two thumbs up!
Only for kids.......1999-07-27
I thought this book would be a little creative. I was wrong. The book is weak for a couple of reasons: first, instead of teaching how to draw specific elements that make these characters it shows how to draw individual entries. So if your child wants to learn how to draw a viking, (s)he will only see one perspective and nothing more. No technique on how to draw the helmet, the garb etc.. Second, the book doesn't follow basic techniques to learn how to draw. In my opinion this book should be for 5 year olds in the house that are tired of coloring books. Buy a Jack Hamm book if you want to learn how to draw!

Mexican Indian Folk Designs: 200 Motifs from Textiles (Dover Pictorial Archive Series)

Book Description
When, in the sixteenth century, the Spanish conquistadors defeated the Aztec empire in Mexico and the Inca empire in Peru, their dreams of finding treasure in the New World were amply fulfilled. What they also found was that the Aztecs and the Incas were the latest in a long line of highly civilized peoples to have occupied Mesoamerica and the Andes. In this engaging book, Esther Pasztory describes the very different cultural traditions of these two areas, placing them within their historical and social contexts. Pasztory draws on a vast range of material finds, including monumental sculpture, woven textiles, pottery portrait heads, gold masks, and illustrated codices. She reveals the effects of colonialism on the art, as well as the curious power that Pre-Columbian art has in turn exerted upon Western art, both in the development of art theory and the creation of art works.
Customer Reviews:
well-written, thoughtful survey.......2001-06-22
This is a very easy to read yet comprehensive survey of Pre-Columbian art. Pasztory has the rare gift of conveying complex ideas clearly and concisely in a style that is a pleasure to read. The book is a general survey of Pre-Columbian art as a whole, with separate sections on Mesoamerican and Andean art, further broken down into chapters on each of the major components in both traditions. I know Mesoamerican art very well, and found her writeups to represent the current state of knowledge, while still providing insights into newer interpretations. This book is a pleasure, and ranks with her study of Teotihuacan (Experiment in Living).
Thorough, colorful, and fascinating.......2000-05-30
Professor Pasztory is a wonderful lecturer with an in-depth knowledge of the subject material. This comes through in her fine book, simply entitled Pre-Columbian Art. The pictures and the comments and descriptions that follow them clearly explain the information in a way that anyone can understand, whether one is a long-time student of pre-columbian art or the first-time viewer of the incredible works. Easy-to-read without being oversimplified, this work is a must-read for anyone with an interest in indigenous lifestyles.
