Book Description

The Arts and Crafts Movement is probably best known for the furniture that came from it. Indeed, many claim that the furniture from this period was the one truly great product of the era. Now, enthusiasts of this popular furniture style can follow the rise of the design movement from its beginnings in mid-19th century England to the major American manufacturers of the 20th century.

Warman's Arts & Crafts Furniture covers the giants of the designers and manufacturers of Arts and Crafts furniture: John Ruskin, Charles Rennie Mackintosh, William Morris, the Stickley Brothers, designer Harvey Ellis, Charles Limbert, Elbert Hubbard and the Roycrofters, Charles Rohlfs, and more. Over 1,500 listings include detailed descriptions and pricing for each piece, and more than 1,000 vibrant full-color photos convey the functional beauty of the era's furniture.

4 out of 5 stars Just like a lot of "price guides", but great reference material.......2007-04-14

This book has some fantastic examples of Craftsman and Arts & Crafts furnishings. Great to look at for reference material or styles that you may wish to emulate as a designer, furniture maker, or decorator. If you are a fan of the arts and crafts or Craftsman style, this book has plenty to drool over. The book has excellent photography and lots of examples of many different furnishings.

Why this book doesn't get 5 stars: Like many "price guides", much of what is contained in this book are period pieces in excellent condition and will rarely, if ever, be seen by the average person at an auction or flea market. The prices generally have the feel of the highest estimate available. On the low end are simple, framed mirrors for $500 to the high end Harvey Ellis bookcase/desk for $115,000. Don't buy this for a price guide unless you like paying for your furniture what the most expensive antiques dealer would like to charge you.

            Book Description

This is the popular, one-stop, starting-from-scratch, fully illustrated furniture-making sourcebook that novice woodworkers want. There’s no need to have loads of experience and expensive lumber to make attractive furniture: just a few 2x4 boards will do to make pieces as good as anything on the market, and these no-nonsense instructions outline the techniques so clearly that even beginners will follow the instructions easily. They’ll learn how to select lumber, work with it once they get it home, make the cuts and simple joints required, and create cabinets, shelves, desks, tables, chests, and more. Over twenty projects range from an elegant armoire to a practical kitchen cabinet. There are complete materials lists, numbered illustrations, and full-color photos of each finished project.

            1 out of 5 stars What 2x4s?.......2005-08-27

I really was looking for a book on furniture made of 2x4s...a bunkbed frame in particular. This book didn't have it and didn't have much else made from 2x4s after a quick look.

5 out of 5 stars A nice simple book about nice simple furniture.......2002-06-12

As a beginning woodworker, I thought this book might be a good place to start, and I was right. It begins with a discussion of tools you'll need, with a picture of and writeup about each. It gives options about differing tools you could use and explains their pros and cons. Next it discusses wood, explaining how wood is sized and graded, and discussing how to select and purchase wood, nails, glues, screws, and nails.

The projects are simple and I feel they are well documented, with lots of drawings depicting key techniques of construction. They do a good job of using simple shapes and pre-made parts to simplify construction.

In all, I recommend this book to beginning woodworkers or anyone looking to make relatively simple furniture.

            3 out of 5 stars Certainly not her best . . . try "2 x 4 Furniture" instead.......1999-03-03

I was disappointed with many of the designs in this book. I think the pasted on fabric was tacky and extra-homemade looking. The colors she chose for the painted pieces are hard to look beyond. There is a great buffet and an interesting kitchen cabinet piece in here, though. I would recommend her previous book entitled "2 x 4 Furniture - Simple, Inexpensive & Great-Looking Projects You Can Make" over this selection.

5 out of 5 stars Good looking furniture that's fun to make!.......1998-11-27

This is a fine book for people (women and men!) on a budget who want nice furniture and are willing to put some sweat equity into their decorating. I am a beginner at woodworking and I learned a lot about the basics. Plus, I have some good looking furniture that was inexpensive and fun to make.

2 out of 5 stars Mostly craft projects, not furniture.......1998-05-12

Unfortunately, this is not a book of plans for building solid, simple 2x4 furniture. A more accurate title would be: "21 Home Woodcraft Projects for Women". The first half is an overview of woodworking tools, and the second half describes 21 projects. Only two of the projects use actual "2x4" lumber, many are not "furniture", and "great-looking" depends on your taste.

“Numerous woodworking books claim to teach the beginner how to make easy and useful projects with cheap materials. While many fail to live up to these claims, this excellent book does. A variety of projects are covered. The material on tools and techniques is straight-forward. This book will interest woodworkers of all skill levels.”—Library Journal

5 out of 5 stars Handy and simple intructions.......2005-09-26

The instructions were plain and simple handy for the most amature woodworker seeking to save a buck on some basic furniture. Good guides on selecting wood, tools and hardware.
I can't wait to build a decorative box to hold my wood pellets! Nice seats and benches and great easy cabinets and chest o drawers. Loved it!
Warning...does not really just use 2X4's. There are different size boards.

1 out of 5 stars These projects may self-destruct.......2003-05-15

Anyone who has ever had to mess with a stuck door has confronted a troublesome fact of life: Wood moves. Write that down on a 3x5 card: "Wood moves." Hold this card in your hand and look at it from time to time as you thumb through Stevie Henderson's enormously successful 2x4 Furniture. Because Stevie seems to forget occasionally.

Take the first project in the book, for example. It is a coffee table with an edge-glued wood top almost four feet wide, screwed and glued to a frame running cross-grain to the top. Actually, the top is glued to some trim pieces which are in turn screwed and glued to the supporting frame, but it's pretty much the same deal. You can't do this, folks. A four foot width of pine is going to swell and shrink as much as 1/4" with the changing of the seasons, and it does so across the grain. Gluing it to a piece of long grain (which doesn't move) is like sticking it in a vice and repeatedly closing and opening the vice by 1/4".

That's the theory, anyway, and if it's right, then something has to give. I would guess the miter joints in the trim would open up, or the table top would warp and split, or both. Indeed, something bad is definitely happening: In the photograph, you can see a big gap opening up between the tabletop trim and the supporting framework to which it is glued and screwed. Since this is a big full-color photo of a project for a woodworking book, you'd think they'd turn the piece's best face to the camera. The scary thing is, this may be the piece's best face.

Have a look at some table plans from respectable woodworking magazines. Have a look at a table that's been around a long time. You won't see broad pieces of solid wood effectively welded to anything running cross-grain. You'll see things like slotted screw holes or tabletop clips that permit the top to move. Otherwise, the piece will explode like a bomb.

Just kidding. But it will become a horrible crippled thing that you will want to blow up with a bomb. There are simple ways around this problem. For example, why not use plywood for the top? You're already trimming the edges all around. Or if you just have a thing for solid wood, trim the ends with "breadboards." Or just round them over and consider them trimmed. But don't glue them into a frame!

This book is full of stuff like this. Solid wood panels with battens or cleats glued and screwed across the width. Why do you suppose your cabinet doors aren't made this way? Or your house doors for that matter? Because wood moves. Thus the genius of frame-and-panel doors.

And the outdoor furniture. Have a look at the chairs on page 122. See the gap? You like your joints open to the weather? That's what happens when you build outdoor furniture with these huge face miters. How about the bench on the back cover? There's an easy and sturdy way to build a thing like this, but Stevie's piece relies mainly on screws going into endgrain, which is about the weakest thing there is. That bench is going to rack over like a beer carton the first time a fat guy jumps up on it and dances.

People say this book's strength is the simplicity of the projects, but I find some of the stuff to be overbuilt for what it is. Look at the "rustic chest." That's a heck of a lot of wood and measuring and cutting and fastening to do what a 6-board chest does in, well, 6 boards.

This is a good book for sharpening your critical eye, but it's not for a weekend warrior who just wants some plans to knock together. Perversely, you have to know what you're doing to get ideas from this book, and I think the opposite was intended.

5 out of 5 stars A good book for short projects and for beginners ........2003-05-03

I have never done any woodworking outside of 8th grade shop class where we made a napkin holder. I wanted to do some woodworking and I thought this book would be a good start. It was. I am very happy with this book. They lead you through step by step, which if you do not know how to read a woodworking "plan", makes it comprehendible. This book uses very few actual 2x4's, but rather 1x2's, 2x2's and other easy to get lumber. You need very few tools and they don't cost much. Be sure to use clamps! First project I didn't and results are unimpressive. I love this book and highly recommend it.

            3 out of 5 stars Interesting projects.......2002-12-21

This book has some nice projects, but don't let the name fool you. There isn't one 2x4 used on any of the furniture pieces.

4 out of 5 stars 2x4 Furniture: Simple, Inexpensive and great looking project.......2001-09-22

I must take exception to Johnthebarkeep's characterization that making raised panel doors on a table saw is dangerous. Any time you use a table saw, there is the possibility of injury, but making raised panel doors can and has been performed safely by many amateur woodworkers. I find his statement uninformed and needlessly alarming.

3 out of 5 stars good complementary book on Frank Lloyd Wright.......2001-01-28

This book explored the origin, the life of Frank Lloyd Wright. The author didn't discuss FLW's other works as such but did explain the nature why Taliesin & its other counterpart were built, & unbeknown to the architect would one day become 2 of the most important buildings in the States. The book contained many pictures (good quality) of the communes participating in many subsistence activities, FKW giving guidance to his disciples, lavish parties & performances that were held there, many aspects of those buildings. On the sideline, the book also displayed the graphics that were utilised by the Taliesin Foundation, Asian art works that were collected by FKW during his trip to Japan (in particular). For the benefit of the readers, building plans were enclosed to relate to the pictures provided.

5 out of 5 stars Visually stunning treatment of FLW's East West homesteads........1998-09-22

The endlessly creative mind of FLW took two wildly different locales and managed to create important landmarks of twentieth-century architecture in both -- Spring Green, WI, and Scottsdale, AZ. Following a historical glimpse into Wright's origins, this beautiful volume traces the multiple purposes of Taliesin and Taliesin West. The book closes with a unique look at Wright's collect of Asian art, an important influence on his life and work. A definite treat for Wright fans, the book helps show why these two vastly different architectural gems stand as "his autobiography in wood and stone."

                      Book Description

These new titles in the Building Blocks series showcase four more icons of modern architecture, as portrayed by renowned architectural photographer Ezra Stoller. Two buildings by Frank Lloyd Wright, Fallingwater and Taliesin West, Louis Kahn's Salk Institute, and Mies van der Rohe's Seagram Building are shown in original condition, with original furnishings, as the architects intended them to be seen. Wright's integration of architecture and landscape, Kahn's dramatic yet humane monumentality, and Mies's austere elegance are revealed and preserved in Stoller's classic compositions. Small, elegant, and affordable, each volume presents the photo-graphs that made these structures famous. With 60 rich duotone plates (and 16 color plates for Taliesin West), a brief introduction, and newly drawn plans, sections, and elevations, these books constitute the essential photographic histories of the most important works of modernism.

5 out of 5 stars Review on Audio Book.......2006-05-02

I heard about this Audio Book and bought it to understand the actual environment of Taliesin West. I could hear in the audio the actual story about how life in their shelters are. With the actual voice of Frank Lloyd Wright integrated with Lira Luis's voice, the story and theory came to me as a very REAL story. I learned a lot about sustainable building and the idea of organic architecture. It is very educational and fun to listen to the adventures of the actual life of living in a Desert environment. I specially enjoyed listening to the personal journal by the author.
