Not at all what I expected - very, very disappointed.......2004-12-04
I bought this cookbook thinking it was persian cooking. I certainly did not expect to see recipes for Italian dishes and dumbed down american dishes. I wouldn't even say these are recipes - things like dumping a can of cream of mushroom soup with other things is not cooking in my mind. This is neither persian cooking or american cooking - it's a disgrace to people who enjoy the art of either. I'm returning the book. I'd give this 0 stars, but unfortunately, Amazon doesn't have that option.
A feast for the eye and the mouth.......2001-01-03
I highly recommend this international cookbook whether you are a sophisticated cook or an enthusiastic beginner. I made the walnut and veal stew with the upside-down rice to complement my Christmas dinner. The golden crust of the rice was awesome. The star meringue made an impressive and easy dessert. I've made the salmon tart both as an appetizer and as a light lucheon meal. The step-by-step instructions make cooking simple. The end result for every recipe I tried was both a feast for the eye and the mouth.

This is a great reference book for Shelley china collectors. It shows pattern shapes, pattern numbers and color photos of the hundreds of Shelley tea sets. Great for a beginning collector or for someone who wants
to catalog their collection. Also,it gives the history of the Shelley company from 1860 to its end in 1966. I like this reference book the best of all the Shelley books I have collected.

Book Description
The seventeenth century was a time of great social and political upheaval in China. In Crisis and Transformation in Seventeenth-Century China, Chun-shu Chang and Shelley Hsueh-lun Chang offer a detailed and engaging analysis of society, culture, and the state in China during this critical period.
The main thread of the book follows the life and works of a remarkable figure of the period, Li Yü (1611-80), whose vast array of accomplishments and experiences mirror seventeenth-century China in all its complexity and excitement. Li Yü's China was a world of unprecedented changes in almost all spheres of life. A thriving commercial and industrial economy, stupendous population growth, and the emergence of a new age of science and technology were accompanied by intense urbanization, radical views on money, wealth, and luxury, liberal attitudes toward sexuality, and developments that would change the nature of the literary and intellectual world. The Changs' exhaustive exploration of Chinese historical and literary sources of the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries is combined with a selective application of interpretive insights and analytic techniques from the major theoretical schools.
An important resource for scholars in history, literature, and Asian studies, Crisis and Transformation extends its appeal to those interested in the history of science, issues of gender and social transformation, and popular culture movements.
Chun-shu Chang is Professor of History, University of Michigan, and Honorary Professor of Chinese History, China. Shelley Hsueh-lun Chang is Visiting Associate Professor of History and Research Associate, Center for Chinese Studies, University of Michigan.

Chronicles the Rise of the DPP.......2004-05-13
President and DPP Chairman Chen Shui-bian's successful re-election bid in Taiwan's presidential election earlier this year, against a unified opposition, has solidified his party's hold on power. With legislative elections later this year, and the political momentum turning its way, the DPP has a chance to make a clean sweep of the Nationalist Party from the main halls of power. Having shown it is a serious political party, and not just the fortunate benefactor of a divided opposition, as it was in 2000, understanding the DPP has become a necessity for those serious students of Asia interested not just in Taiwan politics but in cross-strait issues as well.
This book, which details the rise of the DPP from a scattered and unorganized set of factions during the Martial Law Era to the surprising prominent national force it became with Chen's first election as Taiwan's president in 2000, is the best introduction of the party I've read in English. The author Shelley Rigger tells the history of the DPP, outlines its organization, describes how it makes decisions, shows the importance of factions to its makeup, and demonstrates how the Taiwanese public views the party. The book also discusses the DPP's policies, and how the history of the party's opposition to the ruling KMT left it with little of a sustainable and broad-based ideology beyond pushing for greater democratization.
Much has happened in Taiwan politics since this work was first published in 2001, dating some of Rigger's observations in the book. For example, she thought the DPP still faced enormous obstacles in becoming a permanent balancing force in the island's politics. Chen's recent re-election against a united Pan-Blue opposition appears to be proof that whatever obstacles existed, they have been overcome. Even had Chen lost the election (and it was a controversial election, decided by a very narrow margin), that he could have run such a competitive race, after what even many supporters considered a lackluster four years governing the island, shows the large political gains his party has made during his tenure in office.
Rigger is a serious scholar and is fairly objective throughout the book. However, she is sympathetic to the DPP and occasionally tries too hard, in my opinion, to justify the party to her English-reading audience. An example of this is on the issue of independence. She writes about the DPP dropping its policy of a formal declaration of independence as an example of heart-felt moderation, rather than political maneuvering. But the party's steady focus on several policies associated with independence (passports, constitution, referenda, educational content, etc.) suggests the party is dedicated to a strategy that will make the country ripe for independence. There's nothing wrong with that, of course, but Rigger downplays the point, perhaps fearing it might be misconstrued by her readers and reinforce the already widespread belief outside Taiwan that the DPP is reckless on the issue.
Excellent overview of the DPP.......2002-10-26
This is a great book for those unfamiliar with Taiwan's Democratic Progressive Party. It presents an objective analysis of the DPP's history, prospects, and role in a democratic Taiwan. Those who respect democratic values will be inspired by the DPP's fight to overcome martial law and influence Taiwan's democratic developments. Perhaps one day the Western world will realize that it is Taiwan's government that is truly legitimate, while China's oppressive regime is the real enemy to human rights and decency.
A major contribution, but more needs to be done.......2001-09-23
Shelley Rigger's book about the Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) is the first academic book exclusively dedicated to Taiwan's most succesful opposition party of the 1980s and 1990s. Taiwan-expert Rigger sheds some light on the party's development since its foundation 1986 up until after the succesful presidential election in March 2000, when DPP-candidate Chen Shui-bian won the presidency. This well-written book is thus poised to become a standard book of reference when talking about the often misunderstood DPP. But here also lies the problem of Rigger's most recent work: She tries to defend the DPP against widespread criticism (that the party's moderation throughout the 1990s was only tactical and not substantial) while downplaying the fact that the DPP's party machine up until the present day is still controlled by hardliners who favor Taiwan Independence (TI) over anything else. This misunderstanding has much to do with her underconceptualization of factionalism within the party. Rigger claims that the DPP's factions are institutionalized and should be envisaged as quasi-autonomous actors vis-a-vis party institutions. Taiwanese factionalism-experts however have convincingly argued that factionalism within the DPP encompasses all administrative levels and penetrates all party institutions. The party is also mainly controlled by the New Tide faction, which can be more accurately described as a party within a party. This faction is furtive as it doesn't name its 100 or more followers and its island-wide faction branches are loyal only to the faction and not to the party in general. The New Tide's control of the party machine thus calls into question the party's overall moderation. Also, while the DPP should be praised for its contributions to Taiwan's democratization the downsides resulting from the party's internal development should not be downplayed either, namely the emergence of strong Taiwan chauvinism and nationalism. Both clearly originated from within the DPP's New Tide faction. The book thus is a good start for all those who would like to learn more about the DPP, but it might not satisfy all those who are already familiar with the party's overall development.
Book Description
The great noh actor, theorist, and playwright Zeami Motokiyo (ca. 1363-1443) is one of the major figures of world drama. His critical treatises have attracted international attention ever since their publication in the early 1900s. His corpus of work and ideas continues to offer a wealth of insights on issues ranging from the nature of dramatic illusion and audience interest to tactics for composing successful plays to issues of somaticity and bodily training. Shelley Fenno Quinn's impressive interpretive examination of Zeami's treatises addresses all of these areas as it outlines the development of the playwright's ideas on how best to cultivate attunement between performer and audience.
Quinn begins by tracing Zeami's transformation of the largely mimetic stage art of his father's troupe into a theater of poiesis in which the playwright and actors aim for performances wherein dance and chant are re-keyed to the evocative power of literary memory. Synthesizing this remembered language of stories, poems, phrases, and their prosodies and associated auras with the flow of dance and chant led to the creation of a dramatic prototype that engaged and depended on the audience as never before. Zeami developed this dramatic prototype in his one treatise on composing, Sandô, (The three techniques) and in his play Takasago, both of which are discussed at length here, with annotated translations appended. His precepts on composing are also explored in relation to the poetic tradition, in particular the theories of the court poet Nijô Yoshimoto. Later chapters examine a performance configuration created by Zeami (the nikyoku santai) as articulated in his mature theories on the training of the performer. Drawing on possible reference points from Buddhist and Daoist thought, the author argues that Zeami came to treat the nikyoku santai as a set of guidelines for bracketing the subjectivity of the novice actor, thereby allowing the actor to reach a certain skill level or threshold from which his freedom as an artist might begin.
Eminently readable and accessible, Developing Zeami is a thorough treatment of the evolution of Zeami's thought in the broad context of his work as a performer and playwright. It makes an important contribution to the understanding of his intellectual and artistic formulations while helping to clarify areas of noh studies, such as the understanding of yugen, that have long been debated among students of Japanese drama. It will be welcomed not only by scholars of Japanese theater and literature, but also by actors, playwrights, and others interested in uncovering the work of one of the most innovative thinkers in the history of the stage.
Book Description
Politics of Taiwan is an accessible and highly readable survey of the Taiwanese political situation spanning from 1949 to the present. With a focus on the issue of democratization, Shelley Rigger covers Taiwan's complicated and unique political history, and tells the story of how Taiwanese, demanding a stonger voice in politics, drove their government to reinvent itself on a democratic blueprint.
This book shows that Taiwan, unlike other countries, avoided serious economic disruption and social conflict, and arrived at its goal of multi-party competition with little bloodshed.

Superb.......2000-03-26
Professor Rigger's inaugural work shows a great deal of talent and promise. She argues convincingly that it was the very institution of local elections, conducted even in the darkest days of the Chiang Kai-Shek era, that made a crucial contribution to the island's later peaceful transition to democracy. Very insightful and informative.
A Must-Read.......2000-01-29
'Politics in Taiwan' is an extraordinarily well researched, elegantly argued and very readable book. It concisely contends that Taiwan's 'democratic miracle' is a result of a long history of local elections that have taken place on the island, inculcating democratic skills and nurturing a viable opposition to the authoritarian regime. The book comprises an equal blend of theoretical reasoning and empirical richness. Professor Rigger nicely captures both the dynamics of historical development and the contingencies of real-life politics. A must-read for those interested in contemporary Taiwan and/or democratization, and very suitable for the college classroom.
Politics in Taiwan.......2000-01-19
An outstanding contribution to understanding the current status of the political scene in this part of Asia and its implications for the greater world community. It is comprehensive, well organized, and very readable, even for the relative novice to the field.

Book Description
Democratic Development in East Asia explores an important but neglected topic in the literature on democratization in East Asia: the international dimension of democratization. It presents a coherent and comprehensive analysis of the impact of external political, economic and cultural factors on China, South Korea and Taiwan's political development since World War II. The author analyzes the circumstances under which the international context affects domestic actors' choice of political institutions and actions and concentrates on a selection of key international structures and actors that make up this complex picture. Shelley also examines the international political economy, aspects of the United Nations system, diffuse cultural factors and processes, democracy movements, and a number of international non-government organizations.

"Gorgeous!" said The Anti-Crafter........2005-04-30
I dare you to open this book and not get sucked in by the creativity and beauty of these ideas. Forget Martha Stewart! Ellen Spector Platt came up with pages of unique, stunning, and simple projects that leap off the page. My mother and I have done several of the projects, our favorite being the floral loom, which now hangs above the bed in her newly redecorated bedroom. The pictures are so beautiful, you almost don't want to try to recreate the projects on your own (for fear they won't turn out as good), but the directions are comprehensive and clear, making all of the projects possible for anyone. I call myself "The Anti-Crafter," but I couldn't resist trying some of this stuff. It's too beautiful and too clever to resist.

Book Description
This important book critically examines the traditional interpretation of riba (translated as usury of interest) and the attempts of modern Islamic banks to put that interpretation into practice. The first part of the book examines the prohibition and interpretation of riba in Islam, as well as the controversies surrounding it. The second part examines the alternatives to interest-based financing utilised in Islamic banking and the problems associated with such alternatives with particular focus on mudaraba, musharaka and marabaha. The book questions the legalistic approach to the interpretation of riba and argues for a moral understanding of the issue in the light of the authoritative texts of Islam and the lessons learnt from the Islamic banking experiment.
