In the original Joy of Cooking, Irma Rombauer wrote, "The chicken is a world citizen." Those words of wisdom have certainly withstood the test of time. They may even be truer today than they were in 1931. The draw of chicken is obvious: it's low fat, inexpensive, and easy to prepare--yet it can also be so... dull. As the star of its own volume in Joy's All About series, it truly shines.
Adapted from The Joy of Cooking and coauthored by Rombauer, her daughter Marion Rombauer Becker, and her grandson Ethan Becker, this volume upholds Joy's long-standing tradition of teaching generations of Americans to cook. In the same conversational yet instructional tone that made the original Joy such a favorite, the authors cover everything a cook needs to know to become a master of chicken.
Like the other editions of Joy, this one provides plenty of time-tested recipes for classic standbys as well as an inspirational array of recipes for more exotic fare to encourage readers to experiment and find new favorites. For a casual family supper, you can't go wrong with Baked Chicken with Onions, Garlic, and Rosemary or Chicken and Dumplings. For more elegant occasions, the flavorful Gorgonzola-Stuffed Chicken Breasts or buttery Chicken Kiev fit the bill. Those who are calorie-conscious will revel in dishes like the succulent Sautéed Boneless, Skinless Chicken Breasts with Tomatoes, Capers, and Basil or the delightfully tangy Sautéed Boneless, Skinless Chicken Breast with Balsamic Citrus Sauce. More adventurous eaters will find satisfaction in dishes like Doro Wat (Ethiopian-style chicken in red pepper sauce), Spicy Chicken Hobo Pack with Lime and Chili Peppers, and Baked Chicken with Chili-Garlic Spice Paste. Full-color photographs depict finished dishes and offer step-by-step illustrations.
A section on stuffings, a chapter on flavor enhancers--marinades, sauces, and spice rubs--and tips on buying, storing, and freezing chicken make this book is an indispensable guide for serving chicken for every occasion. --Robin Donovan

Some pretty pictures, but that's all........2006-04-03
Collecting the full spectrum of non-glass marbles is collecting the history of toy marbles. It should have been impossible to produce a book on non-glass marbles without mentioning details of their history and production, but this has now been accomplished, unfortunately.
The hundreds of individual marble pictures vary greatly in interest. Many are redundant and the inferior pictures detract from the few excellent examples illustrated.
Antique agate marbles are interspersed with modern mineral marbles. There is very little or nothing mentioned of wooden, hollow brass, limestone, alabaster, stoneware, sewer-tile or ivory toy marbles.
Any ceramic marble coated with a colored glaze is called a "bennington", which is not helpful.
There is no mention of the largest US agate marble factory which cut and ground Mexican onyx in the 1920s and 1930 in Los Angeles, California.
No contemporary marble makers are named, although their marbles are illustrated profusely.
No distinction is made between earthen ware, red ware, stone ware (very old German as well as 100 year old Akron), yellow ware (generally from the US) white ware or porcelain (usually German).
Any marble with surface lines is arbitrarily called "line pottery" or "line crockery" or "lined china".
Unfortunately, since rarity does not greatly influence price (value) amongst many ordinary ceramic toy marbles, it appears there was no incentive for the author to accurately categorize them.
I'm not looking for a treatise on ceramics, but at a list price of $50, some attempt should have been made to progress from the folksy and sloppy jargon of the past to well established classification used by ceramic collectors. Such impaired communication inhibits progress; ceramic marble collectors will have to wait for a better book, which is long overdue.
save your money.......2006-02-27
This book is mostly a collection of pictures of individual marbles, seven to a page, supposedly marketed as an identification and price guide. It turns out to be a terrible waste of time and money for everyone.
Promulgation of confusing and inaccurate terminology should have ceased long ago, with the publication of more factual marble books such as Gartley and Carskadden's "Colonial Period and Early 18th Century Children's Toy Marbles" and Paul Baumann's "Collecting Antique Marbles".
There is a minimum of text, probably because of a scarcity of knowledge on the author's part. An obvious lack of appreciation of the origins and manufacturing techniques of these marbles creates some major errors and omissions. For example, a variety of distinctly different marbles are lumped together as either "lined pottery" or "lined crockery" or both. Painted clay marbles, variegated porcelain marbles as well as decorated American stoneware marbles are all called "lined pottery". The same photograph is sometimes repeatedly used with a different caption. The term "sponge ware" is used so frequently and inaccurately as to be meaningless. No mention is made of the ubiquitous limestone marble, nor the uncommon marble cut and ground from red veined marble, which probably gave toy marbles their name. No distinction is made between modern machine ground, semi-precious stone marbles, (cheaper by the pound at rock shops) and expensive hand cut German agates from the 19th century. We don't need seven individual pictures of blue "Bennington" marbles (a misnomer by the way) on a single page! Cane handles are lumped together with distinctly different painted china marbles, and the artists responsible for modern painted china marbles are not acknowledged. There is not a single reference to any of the numerous and often inaccurate statements, and the short bibliography is useless. A lack of an index is not surprising, as I doubt the author could ever come up with one, given the disorganization of the book. This is a book any experienced collector would find useless and to which no new collector should ever be exposed.

I bought the Sew Fast Sew Easy book for my girlfriend and she's been making all sorts of stuff. On the company website they have online classes. She took the men's underwear class and now I'll never run out of briefs. She also did the lacy tanga panty video for herself. Thank you Sew Fast Sew Easy! So I got her this book to move onto. I hit a home run with it. She now watches project runway with a new appreciation.

I love this book. I'm totally stoked on the projects I've created with it. I've learned a lot from this book unlike another boring sewing book my mom gave me, "Sewing for dummies". This is a rad beginner book as well as alterations and fittings. Any level of sewing should be able to get something from it. I also think the Sew Fast Sew Easy book is a great book to have first.

I got the Sew Fast Sew Easy book and loved it so I bought this book also. It was cheaper than some of the others and well worth it. I had a really good time doing the projects in this book and learned some more on tailoring and heming. This would be a great gift for anyone who likes to get creative and mess around.

Book Description
When he was 26, Chip Conley broke the two cardinal rules of starting a business: he invested in an industry about which he knew nothing and he ignored the mantra "location, location, location." He bought a notorious "pay-by-the-hour" motel in a seedy San Francisco neighborhood.
A dozen years later, Chip is the "boy wonder" of the American travel industry, famous for his entrepreneurial genius, creativity, and sense of fun.
In The Rebel Rules, Conley shares his success secrets. He focuses on the primary traits -- vision, passion, instinct, and agility -- that characterize today's fast company leaders. His guidebook doubles as a toolbox for anyone -- whether a virgin entrepreneur or a corporate manager -- who wants to walk in step with today's business innovators.
The Rebel Rules will show you how to:
- Tap into your natural talents and focus on what you can control
- Build a fanatical customer base and create great buzz
- Engage employees and encourage them to break the rules
- Kick butt in business and still have a life
With exercises and activities that will develop these and other business skills, The Rebel Rules will transform the way you approach your career.
Customer Reviews:
Why companies need more rebels..........2007-08-31
This is a book that would deserve much more attention by media and readers than it has gotten since it was published in 2001. The reason for this?
It is quite simple; the book goes to the core of a key issue: succeeding in what you do with your professional life while being yourself.
Too many times we seem to be bound to live a life in which compromises are unavoidable in order to make it in our work: there is a "system" and we need to rapidly understand it and find ways to fit in even if this fitting in does not bring to us much pleasure nor pride.
Chip Conley is a successful entrepreneur in the hospitality and entertainment business. He has found success by being a rebel according to his definition of the concept: expressing the best of yourself in order to create value and not caring too much about what the rules of the "system" and "standard practices" are. From his perspective being a rebel does not mean to simply systematically fight what is conventional, it means to find out who you really are and put your talents and ideas to work in order to generate concrete value added within ever changing market dynamics. He also points out that "the rebels who make a difference in the long run are those with integrity" and Conley defines integrity in a very practical way "knowing what to do, saying you are doing it and then doing it".
Vision, passion, instincts and agility (and their balancing act)
Vision, passion, instincts and agility: these are the four key aptitudes that any rebel should discover within, cultivate with method and express in a determined yet balanced and resourceful way. Conley summarizes the concept with an image: your eyes fuel the vision; your hearth the passion; your gut the instincts and your feet the agility.
Vision is what gives us a sense of direction, a way to channel our energy and ideas in order to make a better future for us and other people; passion is the fuel that keeps us going, in order to never run on empty it is essential to focus on the concept of integrity above mentioned and to synchronize who you are, what your values are, and what you do; instincts are represented by the ability to swiftly catch and create opportunities in order to fulfill your vision (Conley makes and interesting point here: while traditional managers are resource-driven - they do what they can with the resources at hand; the rebel managers are opportunity-driven - they don't let themselves be trapped in their thinking by the boundaries of their resources and this helps them to constantly find opportunities for development and improvement); finally agility concerns our ability to keep our material and immaterial (thoughts, assumptions, certainties) baggage light in order to move rapidly at the pace required by the changes happening around us.
This is the theoretical framework, it flows and it makes sense. The tough practical issue is how to integrate all of these four aptitudes by balancing them, Conley points out: "Few people - rebels or not - posses all four qualities in full measure. Great eyes (vision) but awkward feet (agility) will lead to embarrassing organizational moments. A big heart (passion) but a confused gut (instinct) means a lovable but indecisive leader. A rebel out of alignment can create dis-ease not only in the rebel's body but also throughout the organization. Just like any athlete, the rebel may favor certain body parts. But she can also develop her abilities, and when she combines al of four aptitudes in choreographed manner, the result is pure poetry".
"The rebel's job is to make the complex simple"
This sentence captures the essence of Conley's message. The balancing act of the rebel's four core aptitudes should be geared towards this greater all encompassing goal: simplify! Make things that appear impossible and complex reachable and achievable; do that by working on your perceptions, on identifying, refocusing and channeling your sense of fear and uncertainty. Being a rebel means, above all, to have the courage to know oneself, what we really care for and value beyond all what society defines as important and relevant. Learning to recognize the own values and putting them into practice at work becomes the fuel of the rebel's energy. The rebel faces with focus and determination the barriers that she comes to recognize either slow down or block the expression of the mix of vision, passion, instincts and agility.
Conley makes a very interesting connection by relating all of this to a key finding by James Collins and Jerry Porras that studied several American companies for their book `Built to Last: Successful Habits of Visionary Companies' "It is better to understand who you are than where you're going in today's unpredictable world - for where you are going will almost certainly change... The crucial variable is not the content of a company's ideology, but how deeply it believes and expresses it in all that it does".The book is rich of practical ideas and examples on how to achieve this. Action, real action "rebels work hard and play hard" is the common denominator of the rebel's aptitudes.
Do companies need rebels?
This question comes to mind while reading this book. Companies need rebels if they start to realize that they are struggling to keep up with the changes happening in markets and society and mostly if they come to realize that the competitive edge is not simply in keeping up with the changes but trying to lead them! Fostering a culture of rebels, according to Conley's ideas and practices, requires a strong determination to truly engage in a positive and constructive way the experiences, thoughts, passions and observations of the people. Managing a company made of rebels it is certainly much tougher than managing a company made of people whom main goal is just to fit in within the "system" at keep it running; at the same time it can very well be the only long term way forward to survival and success.
Insight to better your business........2006-02-15
Bought this book in 2001 and refereed to it on many occasions in my endeavours. I thought the vision and how to be able to apply it was really insightful. At the time I think you can use this book relatively easily although now it might not be as easy to implement all the author is writing about. Using this book as a guideline to help and get your vision together would be good.
Implementation wise it would be a little more difficult.
Enjoy!
Great Rebel Book!.......2001-11-28
I bought this book when I was traveling in New Mexico.
It is full of spirit and joy! Read this book!
To be a rebel means to be true to your vision. Chip gives
many examples in his book. Chip is very conscious of how important vision is. Vision gives your life full-throttle power!!! Chip gives you the tools to craft your
vision magnificiently!
Read this book, and you will be a rebel in life, wherever you are- New Mexico or Maine or Iowa! I think this book applies to
you whether you running a biz, investing, or thinking about starting a very visionary biz! Yes!!!
Today you have to be a rebel!.......2001-10-11
It seems like the world has turned upside down. No wonder business rebels are succeeding like never before - they break with the conventional wisdom and create a whole new paradigm. THE REBEL RULES does a good job explaining who these people are, like Southwest Airlines' Herb Kelleher and Charles Schwab, but more importantly, it helps get inside the head of an entrepreneur. Most business books are written by consultants, so this book is a breath of fresh air as it gives specific tools and strategies that you can immediately use in your company. My only criticism is that the book tries to cover a little too much ground...I would have preferred to see more in-depth discussions in the area of "how to create buzz" or "creating corporate culture" as those seem to be the areas where Mr. Conley excels the most. I highly recommend this book for anyone trying to understand where the world of business is going.
How about the real rebels?.......2001-06-01
I have worked for myself for the last nine years and believe that any true rebels would and should through this book out the window.

Customer Reviews:
I like Alexandra Stoddard a lot, but I'd skip this one........2003-01-08
This book was okay, but not great. Stoddard's books on interior design are her true forte, and I will stick to reading those in the future.
The Best of the Best.......2002-03-01
Alexandra Stoddard is one of my favorite authors and over the last four years since I dicovered her I have been able to collect and enjoy 20 of her books. This one continues to be a favorite. It talks about having the courage to be yourself in aspects from decorating to travel to gift giving. Every chapter is beautifully written and includes Alexandra's tradmark -favorite quotes by some of her favorite authors. (this one made me smile, "Beware of all enterprises that require new clothes." -Henry David Thoreau) This is a book that is so helpful and wonderful to have that I can't believe it is out of print and difficult to get. Luckily, Amazon offers Zshops and auctions. If you love, flowers, travel, decorating, gift giving, hosting parties, or clothes and would like to hear valuable insight on all of these topics - this is a book your library shouldn't be without.
close encounter with thyself.......2001-02-28
I think Alexandra Stoddard is one of the best writers! She discovers little things and small details that we don't even take the time to perceive!!!!!! Her books make us feel connected with us and the world and give us a sense of belonging.
How to find your own style........2000-05-26
Of the thirteen books I've read by Ms. Stoddard, this is my favorite (although I've loved them all). When you read this book get a notebook and answer the questions she asks and when you are finished you will understand YOUR personal style. This book encourages readers to find out what they love as opposed to what is popular or trendy at the time. Have you ever gone into a friends home that perfectly expresses the lifestyle, hobbies, interests and loves of that person? This book is about having what you want with the help of the best decorator ever and the fee is very reasonable! I used to think that the title was kind of cheesy until I talked with several friends who decorate in beige because it's safe-even though they really love purple, lime or raspberry. If you are a purple loving, beige sofa-ed chicken, you really need this book!
Irritating, pretentious, and too precious for words.......1998-04-09
Stoddard's work is a mess of contradictions. In advocating "paring down" to get to what is really important to us, she encourages more buying! Her suggestions and examples are drawn from her life and the lives of her friends - extremely wealthy and very similar to her. If you're looking to find yourself in a way that's inexpensive, non-elitest, and grounded in reality, this isn't the way.
