Book Description
Pinpoint the major settlements around the Gulf of Mexico and you’ve got a road map to good times and great food. Start light in the Floribbean cafés of Key West, then it’s on to Tampa Bay for the Cuban nightlife of Ybor City and the Greek tavernas of Tarpon Springs. Old South fish fries and porch suppers fill lazy days from the Florida Panhandle through Alabama and Mississippi. A few miles and a world away, Louisiana is famous for its Creole and Cajun cuisines and pagan work ethic. Tex-Mex goes uptown in the cosmopolitan restaurants of Houston, while covering the waterfront in freewheeling cantinas and crab shacks from Galveston to South Padre Island. Go even deeper and you’ll taste its sophisticated tropical roots along the Mexican coast.
Gulf Coast Kitchens is your culinary guide to these incredible places. Here is true fusion cooking—French, Cajun, Spanish, Mexican, Asian, African, Italian—centuries in the making, where jambes and paellas morphed into jambalayas. Author Constance Snow gathers together the vast array of flavors this wide-reaching landscape offers, making for a collection of recipes so fresh, exciting, and diverse that your taste buds will be aquiver as you turn the pages, which are filled with all the Ya Ya energy and Creole color you would expect from such a melting pot of people and cultures.
Never before has the Gulf Coast received this kind of attention as a distinct culinary region. Like Southwestern cuisine and California style, the Gulf Coast’s blend of earthy seasonings, indigenous produce, and eclectic mix of flavors put it at the forefront of cooking trends. But forget trends—this food simply tastes great.
Gulf Coast Kitchens offers more than 200 recipes, including Pensacola Gaspachee Salad, Chilled Avocado and Crabmeat Soup, Calabaza con Pollo (Mexican Squash with Chicken), bayou standards like Creole Filé Gumbo and Jambalaya, and even drinks like the Blue Margarita and Louisiana Strawberry Lemonade. There are tips and tricks as well—from “Oyster Shucking 101” to “A Guide to Chiles” to “The Ins and Outs of Beer Tasting”—and beautiful photographs.
Snow’s writing is fresh and engaging and this book marks the appearance of a major new voice on the culinary scene. Join her tour in
Gulf Coast Kitchens, one of the most interesting, lively, and tasty places on the planet.

Taste of the South..........2003-06-05
As a New Englander, I need what sunshine I can get and this book has it with its marvelous range of the Gulf's Cuban/Italian/Creole/Mexican/Vietnamese flavors. I particularly love that the recipes are adaptable to what I can find here, and the beautiful photos are a plus (and an inspiration) as well.
I Tried It and I Loved It!.......2003-05-23
I love to read cookbooks as well as use them. Gulf Coast Kitchens is engaging and fun to read. It is well researched with lots of interesting vignettes. The writing is colorful and lively. The recipes are a good mix of down-home and exotic dishes.
Easy fixings are a priority for me. Gulf Costs Kitchen's simple instructions with tips for advance preparation makes each recipe a dream.
I have already given several books as gifts. If you try it, you will love it, too!

Good guide........2007-10-01
I would have liked more color photos. Several of the color photos had poor lighting and made it difficult to fully appreciate the pictures.

Great Guide!.......2001-03-09
This is an excellent source for Muffy bear collectors of all ages. The pictures and tips provide excellent resources to determine edition, completion, and price status. Ann offers a modest price guide in the back of the book that sets reasonable expectations for today's value of the bears. I would like to have seen documentation of all of the accessories. Most bears have pictures, but there are a few that do not--and many of the accessories and club pieces are not pictured or priced. Overall, a great source of information. Well-written!
Product Description
Porcupine quillwork is an art form that is unique to the Indians of North America and, before the introduction of seed beads by Europeans, was the method of decoration that was most common. After the Indians were given beads this craft all but disappeared, except in the most ceremonial kinds of adornment. Still, the craft was handed down from generation to generation and recently there has been a renewed interest in this craft among Indians and non-Indians alike. The modern-day "mountain man" and the traditionally-oriented Indian share a desire to possess and create articles decorated with the quills of the porcupine.
In 1917, William C. Orchard (Heye Foundation) wrote his classic, The Technique of Porcupine Quill Decoration Among the Indians of North America, and this book became the definitive work on porcupine quillwork. Since that time very few books have been published about this unique American art form, but none have gone beyond Orchard and attempted to explain exactly how quillwork is done, how to master the necessary techniques or what the secrets are that are needed to do quality craftwork. Jean Heinbuch has now written an excellent book that does just that.
This book starts with the basics of finding and preparing the quills. The author even presents a technique (not recommended) for obtaining quills from live porcupines; she, of course, explores more conventional ways as well. A good explanation of the necessary tools follows with photographs.
Her chapter on General Work Instructions and Basic Stitches is designed to help the reader understand the basic steps upon which the more difficult techniques are built. She is liberal with her advice in keeping things simple and divulges many of the secrets she has discovered over the past eighteen years. With Orchard as a starting point, she has examined numerous museum pieces in her search for the proper techniques.
The reader is encouraged to master the techniques in the Basic Quilling Techniques Chapter and the book is designed so that each step builds upon the next. Of general interest are the diverse techniques that Native Americans used (use) to create rosettes. The book also includes a fine explanation of the steps used to make brain tanned rawhide and leather, and has a much needed disclosure of how to prepare and use natural dyes on quills. Advanced techniques are explained in text, illustrations and photographs.
This exciting book of ninety-two pages contains 53 black and white photographs, 4 full pages in four color, 39 figures, 2 tables and 115 illustrations.
A text that should be of interest to anyone who enjoys traditional arts and crafts, the culture of the American Indian and the early lifestyle of Native Americans. It may well be the new definitive source of this beautiful art form.

This should be one of the first books you purchase on the subject. The instructions are clear and concise. The photos help.
Noted quill worker "gives up the shop" & tells the real deal.......1997-01-22
Ms. Heinbusch does all re-creators of indigenous American culture a great service with the publication of her book. The basic techniques of porcupine quill work embroidery have long been available in various published forms. Much of the old techniques have been lost forever and we the modern crafters need to do our best to re-learn , recreate or create new techniques. Ms. Heinbusch, very early in her book, reveals a treasure trove of her personal experimentation in the dying of the quills. She has been able through trial and error to get a beautiful simulation of the "old time" colors using modern fabric dyes. She spells out the eaxct formulas in almost foolproof recipes. The book included photos of the completed techinques as well as illustrations in the working of the particular technique. A useful chapter in making buckskin had been included and here too, Ms.Heinbusch is free with tricks and tips. I have a few quilling tricks up my sleeve that are not revealed here, but the quillworkers that taught them to me have sworn me to secrecy. I have never met Ms. Heinbusch, yet she has given freely of what she knows to those that learn it, Thank You

Worth it for the illustrations alone.......2007-09-06
This is a Rowan-published book, so naturally all the patterns call for Rowan yarn, primarily Cashsoft DK and Cashsoft Baby DK. I like Rowan yarns, so that's no big deal, but I didn't see anything to suggest they couldn't easily be substituted for something else. The intro says, "These 24 projects should make bedtime fun for any two- to five-year-old child!" and I expect that's true. There are blankets, toys (plus accessories!), bathrobes, slippers and bed socks, cardigans, tanks, vests, and hot water bottle covers all aimed at the pre-school crowd. The book contains no how-to section except for a short appendix of tips at the end. The appendix will be a must for me, as about 20 of the 24 designs use intarsia, crochet, embroidery, or some combination of the three. This is not a collection for those who don't have and aren't willing to learn these skills. What makes this book truly amazing, though, are the illustrations. I'm just in love with them. Instead of using models, each item is photographed and inserted into a hand-drawn illustration (e.g., the cover--the bathrobe, slippers, and doll are all actual handknits; the little girl is strictly two-dimensional.). The book is worth the price of admission for the pictures alone.
Queue-worthy: 4 toys and accessories, 2 cardigans, 2 pairs of bed socks, a tank, etc. I'm not into blankets, but pretty much everything else.
Why bother?: the hot water bottle covers. What is this, Victorian London? They're cute, but not useful for 21st-century America. Viva la central heating!
Conclusion: A winner, even if I never knit a thing out of it.
BUY IT! DO NOT PASS GO, DO NOT COLLECT $200............2007-02-08
Unlike so many other knitting books for babies and kids, this has creative, attractive patterns. No ugly pastels, no useless cutsie booties, no hideous hats, nothing that will embarrass the poor child in 15 years. None of that garbage. I make the stuffed toys and they are universally a hit. Buy this and Handknits for Kids. You will wear them out with use.
Cutest thing!.......2007-01-03
Such a lovely book. Old fashion and romantic. I did miss though some more patterns for kids clothing.
Colorful photos throughout insure interest and polished results........2006-11-07
AND SO TO BED... takes the theme of bedtime and provides handknits for girls and boys ages 2-5 in this sequel to HANDKNITS FOR KIDS. Full-page patterns and easy directions assume prior knitting experience and provide fun socks, a bathrobe for boys, toys, and more for this age range. Colorful photos throughout insure interest and polished results.

My favorite knitting book!.......2006-08-29
I have been wanting to knit bed time items for a long time. When I first heard about this book I knew I had to have it. The design and the beautiful pictures make it my very favorite knitting book to look at. I am almost done knitting the bathrobe in the cover. I love the fact that the items are so easy to make and yet very pretty. I want to make almost everything in this book. The main yarn used is ROWAN Cashsoft which is a little pricy but worth your money. Cashsoft is truly the softest yarn I have work with and it is very elastic and cosy. My only two suggestions for this book are: 1- Sizes go up to 5 years old (I wish it went up to 8 years old) I had to modify the pattern to create a bigger size for my daugther. And 2- This book does not have schematics. I can't believe they missed that. Nowadays, this is almost a requirement in all knitting patterns.
Besides that, I LOVE IT!, my daugther and I love to look at it in bed before going to sleep. We love to make up stories based on the beautiful pictures...
For the next edition; add little stories to it, schematics and bigger sizes, and this will be the most wonderful children knitting book ever!

Excellent overall how-to.......2007-09-25

Must-read for aspiring innkeepers, though dated.......2007-07-09
This is a must-read for aspiring innkeepings, written by leaders in the industry, with a good balance of experiences. When reading, bear in mind that it was written before the Internet became the prime source of reservations for innkeepers, so all the computer related marketing and operations info is not current.
Best on B&Bs.......2005-10-04
This was the best of several books on B&Bs that I looked at from the library.
Best Information on Innkeeping out side of PAII.......2005-07-27

On my shelf for 10 years.......2002-07-11
I read this wonderful book 10 years ago while planning to become an innkeeper. Now that I am a successful innkeeper, I refer to it constantly and am incredibly grateful to the authors. I credit the information learned in this book as a reason for our success. It helped us ask the right questions, particularly about whether or not we had the personalities to make it in this diffficult business. Also, it was invaluable in creating our business plan. Don't open a B & B before reading this.

So - You want to be an innkeeper?.......2001-05-24
You betcha!!! My middle name is Innes (no joke!!!!!) but it might as well be "inns"(!!!!!), that's how much I wanted to be an innkeeper, and Mary Davies' book is "inn" (!!!!!!) the right place "inn" (!!!) my bookshelf. No, but seriously, with my sense of humour and my wife Marjorie's overly solicitous manner and ability to project her prurient judgmentalism and dissaproval wordlessly, we had a headstart in that we were the perfect couple to run a Bed-and-Breakfast. Even the best need a hand though, and this book is a must-read for those who don't want to make a dog's dinner of this rewarding career.
Best financial advice in a short book!.......1999-04-26
As an accountant, I really appreciated the financial planning section of the book. It has helped us to realistically assess different properties in making our investment decision. This book is a must for anyone seriously considering a bed and breakfast or a small inn. Being able to estimate costs and revenues up front is imperative for success.
Great book for potential inn-keepers.......1998-07-23
This book separated the romantic notions of owning a B&B from the business end. It was eye opening and very informative.
Fabulous and comprehensive from all aspects.......1998-04-14
Very comprehensive. Is better for those considering an "inn" vs. renting the spare bedroom.

IF GOD IS MY LOVER...WHY IS MY BED SO COLD?.......2007-07-05
I FOUND THIS BOOK TO BE VERY INFORMATIVE AS TO WHY WE HAVE TO HAVE THE RIGHT RELATIONSHIPS IN OUR LIVES AND HOW TO GO ABOUT GETTING THEM. EVEN THOUGH IT DID HAVE SOME TYPOS IN THE BOOK IT IS A VERY EASY READ. WHOEVER WILL READ THIS WILL BE GREATLY BLESSED.
A New Voice.......2007-06-19
If God is my lover, why is my bed so cold? Many saved single women have asked that question. Staying on God's path while trying to find a mate is not an easy task but it can definitely be done - and the rewards are immense. With candid and uplifting words debut author Olivia Stith combines short chapters, motivational quotes, and exercises that offer to strengthen your relationship with God, yourself and your mate. In an honest and sincere voice Olivia clearly breaks down each bible verse she references, leaving no room for confusion in the intended message.
Lighthearted yet unafraid to voice what some of us have thought about at one point or another, "If God is My Lover..." covers everything from mental preparation and maintaining beauty to open communication and keeping the intimacy alive with Him and him. The non-preachy, realistic tone of the book engulfed me, and before I knew it I was on the last page. This is one of those books that after I finished reading it I was not only glad I did, but knew I was going to purchase it as a gift for someone who would appreciate it as much as I do.

EXCELLENT RESOURCE.......2007-05-13
This book is an excellence resource for singles particularly older singles (over 35). It is a quick read but full of honesty that makes the reader feel that they're not alone. It is also humerous as Ms. Stith says the things that many singles think but may never say publicly. It is an excellent investment into your library - not overly churchy but still clearly Bible based.
Good Read.......2007-04-04
This book is very inspirational and up lifting. Many times we do get tired of waiting for God. He may not come when we call him but his always on time.

MY REVIEW
Let me first say AMEN and thank you Jesus for bringing such a prophetic woman into my life. She blesses me everyday by her teachings and writings.
Let me say Ladies this book is the bomb. As a single woman we always struggle with are we gonna find the right man, as a Christian single woman we want to not only find the right man but a man who loves the Lord as much as we do. This book is not only for single women it is for married women as well. Livi keeps it real while sticking with the word of God. For me I could follow the scriptures and read and POOF I understood. Sometimes I just need to hear the word on my level.
Livi brings the word forward in this keep it real book about women and their search for Mr. Right. That instead of looking build your faith, build you and the Lord will show you when the time is right. In this book you find discussion about "church going men" vs "men of the Lord" someone you can fast with, praise with and live with for all eternity. How to keep OUR house in order to be able to garner that perfect man and keep him.
I am proud to know Ms. Olivia and just as proud of her success. She did all the work, kept it real and in the end created a great book and study guide. You will laugh and learn Gods will for finding that perfect man.
