Beware! Alot of the recipes have milk and cheese in them. Birds are lactose intolerant so those recipes can make them very ill.

Bad high fat human recipes for your birds...........2001-12-09

This recipe book was written by three vegetarians, who like many vegetarians need to supplement their diet with large amounts of cheese to get their proteins. These are not bird recipes - but people recipes, that use lots of oil, butter, cream and cheese. One recipe that started off well: "Pasta Salad" p.44, ends up with 16 oz of Italian dressing.

Things like "Tortellini in cream sauce" or "Rotelle and cheezy vegetables" or "Garlic-buttered vermicelli" should not be part of your bird`s diet or even yours if you are health concious.

Potatoes, Pilaf and Pretzels for Your Parrot.......2001-08-18

What first caught my eye was a statement on the back of the book, "If your bird is a member of the parrot family, did you know that your bird has a palate nearly as sophisticated as that of a human?" Those of us who own birds and already know this now have a place to come to.

There are a couple of sections at the beginning of the book that are just overall information, "A Well-Balanced Diet for Your Bird," "Preparing Your Home (Nest) for Life With a Bird," "Baby Bird's Travel Checklist," and one that will tear your heart out, "The Beginning of the Joshua Foundation."

The "Entrees and Side Dishes for You and Your Bird" section looked fun. A lot of the recipes call for cheese, fat, and sugars. Although, I don't think our birds, especially the smaller ones, should have much of this, the recipes could be modified so you are comfortable with them and otherwise might be great as a sometimes treat. Other recipe sections include "Breads and Pastries," "Vegetable and Fruit Dishes," "Potatoes and Eggs," the entrees section, and "Treats."

Sprinkled (pun intended) throughout are a few birdie stories, each of which you will need to have a box of tissues close by to read. An index in the back allows you to look up recipes by main ingredients or recipe title.

The authors have no veterinary background. In fact, all of them are partners in a CPA firm. But they have a love for parrots, especially those in need, and I think have done a good job of putting together a variety of recipes for our birdies with discriminating palates.

Marbles.......2007-09-21

Everett Grist's Big Book of Marbles is very comprehensive and extremely well illustrated. It will be a great reference for both hand-made and machine-made marbles. The price estimates given for the illustrations are realistic in my opinion and will be helpful in valuing my collection.

Some nice pictures, but woefully inadequate.......2007-06-17

I decided after attending a national collector-run marble show in my area to get this updated Third Edition of Grist's book, because it looked like it would have enough new pictures to make identifying all those troublesome common marbles a possibility. And the pictures in the book are nice, being clear and color-accurate, and showing multiple marbles so one can see the range of designs/colors that fall within a category. However, I've always considered Grist to be a lazy author, and this just confirms it. Yes, it takes some work to get the pictures of so many marbles, but that is something almost anyone could eventually do. This is sub-titled a 'comprehensive' ID book, so I expected Grist to deliver. He does not even come close to delivering on that promise! First of all, many marbles are left out and many more poorly dealt with. As new as I am to marbles, even I know that there are subtle differences that help one to differentiate between marble companies. Yet Grist has virtually NO TEXT explaining how to ID various types of marbles. It is simply pictures and an occassional comment, and as we all know, pictures of certain marbles, such as cateyes, do not do justice in showing the differences. Those need to be EXPLAINED (how many vanes, shape, etc) because the differences usually do not show well in pictures. None of this happens. Many of the Peltier marbles are simply lumped together as 'Champion Jrs.' with none of the common names used in the trade included. And as far as being a comprehensive value guide, only ranges are given with no differention for size or condition given. That is hardly a comprehensive price guide! On top of that, most prices on common marbles (under $10 each) appear to be grossly inflated over what is actually happening in the marketplace today. I wish I could get those prices for my commons - I'd be rich! The final insult is the poor editing done in the book. "Peltier" is spelled "Pelitier" half the time. There are pictures where the heading states "row 1" when it means "column 1." Just plain sloppy. Most pictures of the rarities have no prices at all and only general category IDs for the entire group shown. In general, a nice picture book but nothing about it is 'comprehensive' - just more false advertising. Why can't anyone put out a book with the quality and extent of pictures Grist does and the helpful, detailed text and variety listings such as Block attempts? Then we would be approaching a 'comprehensive ID and value guide.' So far, I've found nothing close.

Good marble identification book.......2005-08-29

Excellent book for identification of marble types and values, and for general history of marble manufacture and select manufacturers. Grist details characteristics of marbles to identify the manufacturing method and general production dates, but you cannot identify marbles to manufacturer or more specific production dates by this book. Excellent pictures and selection of marbles. Overall, this is a good quality marble book.

Really Great Book on Marbles.......2005-01-06

As a serious marble collector, I think this book is invaluable. It's informative and very well put together. I believe it could also work well for non-marble collectors. Marbles are pretty universally fascinating and this book can inform anyone about the worth and characteristics of marbles.

Second Edition of a Beautiful Volume on Marbles !.......2000-04-08

This second edition is updated for 2,000. 190 pages with hundreds of large, full color, sharp photos. Major topics include: Who Can You Trust?, Manufacturers, Antique and Machine Mades, Rarities, Marble Boxes, Christmas Cards, Clubs, Paper Items, etc, etc. A great reference for marble fans.

Wow! Great for the novice matchbook collector!.......2001-11-23

Let's see, I have matchbooks with matches and matchbooks without matches. Some have front strikes some have back strikes. Some of the matches have a design on them when the cover is opened. Some have 20 matches some have 30 matches...what to do? Well, I ordered this book and quickly, some 900 matchbooks of different sizes, shapes,ages and colors all began to come together with order. I even had some of the exact matchbooks described and pictured in the book. I recommend for the novice who finds him/herself with a sudden collection of firestarters from yesteryear.

Cool pix, but where's the beef?.......2000-07-11

Lots of cool pictures. I've spent hours looking at them, but I really wanted more info like how I can place a value on matchcovers. Also looked for tips on how to take care of matchcovers, but I didn't see much. I think this stuff is important, so I had to buy another book by someone else. To bad this book doesn't cover that stuff. If you don't care much about reading and just want the pix, the book is OK.

Disappointment.......2000-07-06

I've spent a lot of time in this industry, and I was disappointed to see the lack of accuracy with many basic details. Clearly the guy has a lot of experience with this subject area, but his manner of encapsulating his knowledge should have been done more at arm's length, rather than attempting to come across as a one-size-fits-all solution, again, because it looks like it took a serious toll on accuracy. If you're looking for pictures and tidbits, then go for it, but what about the bigger picture? Perhaps his next release will cover this. One other thing: I found lots of typos and grammatical errors. Again, perhaps the next releast will fix these too. I would wait until then.

This book is beyond belief. It is authoritative

and accurate to the extreame. It includes

histories of the main medicine companies of the

nineteenth century, bottle and medicine histories,

in-depth classification and description

(color, height, shape, neck type, embossing, etc.),

and clear pictures or helpful drawings

of the specimen. A definite must-have for

Beautiful photographs of fine hotels........1998-11-07

I scaned this book in a bookstore, and will be purchasing it not for its architectural content--I know little about that field, per se--but because it is filled with beautiful photographs--both exterior and interior--of fine, interesting hotels. Unlike some books with photos of hotels that I looked at, this one was spacious, well laid out, and pleasant to look at. I will be sending it as a gift to someone who is studying hotel management overseas, and does not read English well--as I said, I'm buying it for the photos.
