The best introduction to wine available.......2006-01-17
This book is intended for people who have an interest in wine but don't know where to begin. Just as listening is essential to music, tasting is essential to wine; if you don't have a clue what you're listening to or tasting your experience can be quite enjoyable but limited. The author very clearly guides you around how and why different wines taste the way they do. It's simply a great way to learn about wine if you can't (or don't want to) attend a winetasting class. I recommend it over some stiff competition: it's better that both the excellent Windows on the World book and Jancis Robinson's How to Taste.
Take this book to dinner with you...Really!.......2001-10-03
This is a great book to take to dinner with you. It is small enough to fit in a 3-ring binder.
At dinner you can make notes as to the vintage, winery, type, etc. of the bottle that you selected, then use the book to write an 'official' taste report.
It is really fun to go over your notes weeks/months later, and really remember the flavor. I also include notes about the dishes that were served.
I also bring a Perfect Sommelier with me, that ages the wine in 30 minutes. It is a fun item. I found it on Google.

This has got to be the book to get (or give)this year. No surprise that it's winning major wine writing prizes everywhere you look (3 so far this year I read somewhere). Fresh, practical & easy to follow steps to winetasting with no hint of the patronising or the pretentious. The style is straightforward and uncomplicated, the hints and tips given throughout are invaluable. Utterly different from any other wine tasting book on the market, and streets ahead.

I have just started collecting Heywood-Wakefield furniture. I began after seeing a show on Home and Garden TV Network on the reissued Heywood-Wakefield line currently being manufactured. I ordered a catalog from them, visited their web site, then started looking for dealers here in Dallas. Long story short, I found a gentleman here in Dallas who buys and sells antique Heywood-Wakefield pieces. I looked at what he had to offer, and ended up spending a small fortune on several pieces for my bedroom and living room. He swore by this book. This is the Heywood-Wakefield collector's Bible. It has a comprehensive list of nigh every piece Heywood-Wakefield made from about the '20s on. It has pictures of all the pieces, comments on the piece's designer(s), history, and most importantly, an updated (1999) pricing list. Buy this, and you and your dealers will always "be on the same page," literally, when it comes to discussing pieces. This is especially helpful to those who are buying from dealers cross-country. A definite must-have!!!

I'm not knocking the text, because it's informative, but the photos are the reason I bought the book. Rouland's book may be more complete, but you just don't get the same feel when the photos are black & white (not his fault; he was working from company literature in order to be complete). Gertz concentrated on the more popular pieces -- which are likely more easy to find in order to photograph, if they weren't in his inventory already -- and then did them up proud in this extremely high-quality book. To me, it qualifies as a coffee-table art book that should be on display in the living room... preferably on a Heywood Wakefield coffee table. The book is also useful as a reference for the pieces displayed, but the price guide reflects the market of 2000-2001. (Perhaps a 2nd edition will be forthcoming?)
WARNING: Looking at this book may cause severe furniture envy, resulting in the expenditure of large amounts of money with the various Hey-Wake dealers, such as Gertz himself, the folks at Springdale Furnishings, or Strictly HeyWake.

Excellent, but the other Heywood books are worth owning, too.......2007-06-24
On first glance, this looked like a near copy of the green Rouland & Rouland Heywood Wakefield book. It does not have the history of Heywood Wakefield like the green R&R HW book, which makes that book also worth owning. It is the same size as the green R&R HW book and includes many of the same catalog photos. This contains some nice original color catalog photos that were not in the green R&R HW book.
This is the ONLY Heywood Wakefield book with accurate prices for mint and refinished pieces. The green R&R HW book is way off and Harris Gertz's Heywood Wakefield book contains values for furniture found in well used condition. Harris's book has the best photos of Heywood Wakefield furniture.
Buy the books. Buy the furniture. You'll love it.

This is a copy of a catalog full of wicker furniture. If that is what your looking for then by all means get a copy and enjoy all the B/W illustrations of some very finely crafted wicker.
Beautiful Wicker Furniture Illustrations from the Golden Era.......2000-10-22
I was given a copy of this book many years ago my by Mother-in-Law, who was the one that started me on my career of wicker restoration and seat weaving.
Over the years, I have restored many chairs that were listed in this book. I used the Heywood Brothers manufacturer's catalog as a guide for repairing chairs and could visualize what the weave was to be, if some of it was missing from the chair I was working on, because of the excellent line drawings. It was also fun to see what names they assigned to each particular piece of furniture.
Through the use of this book, I was also able to date the wicker pieces that I repaired and in so doing, was able to give my customer a bit of historical information, which they truely loved.
My original copy is very dog-eared and worn, so I will probably buy a new copy soon! Kudos to Richard Saunders for compiling all this information and doing so much research to enable the book to be on the market.

My 11 and 8 year old daughters and I really enjoyed this story. By adding in my own special inflections during the reading... my girls responded with... "What a great story. What a great Kids book. We love Pookie and Tushka (the characters)". Good story, very pleasant and appealing illustrations. I hope that the author continues writing these type of stories.

I like the idea of them being from diffrent parts of the world and getting together. I think tushka is adorable. I went to the website and saw that its available as a stuffed animal, I got to get one, (uh for my niece, yes thats it). The contrast between Pookie and Tushka is great, it shows that two beings from extream parts of the world getting together a nice friendship.

This is the story of a little penguin and his best friend a little polar bear.
The story is tender, sad, happy, and funny ... a lot to fit in a picture book.
The backgrounds are beautifully rendered, and the characters are extremely appealing and full of life.
The book also has 4 pages with information about the north and south pole.
This hardcover version comes with a CD with fun games and bouncy songs.

The first thing that attracted me to this book was the beautiful pictures. But the story had more depth than I expected (for a picture book, anyway).
The characters are very caring for each other and the story, which is a bit melancholic, has a sweet and happy ending. The bonus CD is a very nice addition to the book, since you get to hear Pookie's song, which is what the story revolves around.
