The Paintings of Tucker Smith
ASIN: 189462209X |
Book Description
During his lifetime, artist Carl Rungius (1869-1959) enjoyed a reputation similar to that of well-known western painter Frederic Remington. Though interest in his depictions of the wildlife and awesome landscapes of the west declines after his death, growing fascination with our wilderness heritage is bringing Rungius back into the public eye.Rungius tended toward realism in his depiction of wildlife, he did some commercial illustration work for the magazine Field and Stream and paintings for the New York Zoological Society, but he also experimented with contemporary brushwork. Though his training was European, Rungius worked to develop a palette that would better convey the striking contrasts of light and color peculiar to the mountains and praries of North America. The publication of this book coincides with a travelling exhibit created by the Glenbow Museum of Calgary, Alberta.

This was OK........2007-09-15
I love Charles Wysocki's art and I got this book for less than $7.00. At that price it's worth it--it's only 48 pages. I wasn't overly crazy about the verse and prose, but the pictures are wonderful. If you love Charles Wysocki's art and you can pick this up for a good price then get it.

Incredibly useful. I believe Flacks has written the most accurate and convenient pricing guide available for Maxfield Parrish collectors and anyone else who wants to figure out what a Parrish item is worth. If you're looking for a great coffee table book, I suggest Alma Gilbert's The Masterworks. -- James Halperin, sf novelist (The Truth Machine & The First Immortal) and Parrish collector.

My Purrfect Friend: I Could Live 9 Lives and Not Find a Better Friend Than You
ASIN: 1885183054 |
Book Description
Heartland is the bright and beautiful chronicle of Charles Wysocki's love affair with life and with Americana. Bursting with his distinctive, highly detailed, full-color paintings, drawings, sketches, and photographs from his own collection--and embellished by his own verse--Heartland will be a true source of joy and inspiration to his many fans.
Like An American Celebration, his best-selling 1985 book, Heartland presents a warm and romantic view of the hard work and quiet pleasures of nineteenth-century American life. But Heartland goes beyond that volume in presenting the artist's creative world--the sources of his inspiration.
"There is a simple message in my work," Charles Wysocki has always said, "and it is love." As shown within the pages of Heartland, that love infuses all his work. More than an art book, Heartland is the personal chronicle of Wysocki's unique vision. It is a treasure to cherish and appreciate for generations.

A TRIBUTE TO OUR COUNTRY.......2004-04-11
As Amnerican as apple pie, artist Charles Wysocki's "Heartland" is a tribute to our country.
While his visions exist only in his imagination, his images are true-historic Boston in midwinter with bundled skaters circling a pond, a sun-filed beach in Nantucket, a New England pumpkin patch, and a White House Fourth of July picnic.
Wysocki says, "There is a country in my mind, a landscape in my heart, a place that does not appear on any map but is so clear and sharply detailed that to paint it, I have only to look within."
How fortunate we are that he did.

Book Description
Perhaps no other American painting is at once so familiar and so little understood as Winslow Homer's The Gulf Stream (1899). For more than a century, scholars have praised the artist and yet puzzled over this harrowing scene of a black man adrift in the open sea, in a derelict boat surrounded by sharks. Critical commentary, when it has departed at all from the painting's composition and coloring, has generally viewed The Gulf Stream as a universal parable on the human condition or as an anecdotal image of a coastal storm.
There is more to this stark masterpiece, says Peter H. Wood, a historian and an authority on images of blacks in Homer's work. To understand the painting in less noticed but more meaningful ways, says Wood, we must dive more deeply into Homer's past as an artist and our own past as a nation. Looking at The Gulf Stream and the development of Homer's social conscience in ways that traditional art history and criticism do not allow, Wood places the picture within the tumultuous legacy of slavery and colonialism at the end of the nineteenth century.
Viewed in light of such events as the Spanish American War, the emergence of Jim Crow practices in the South, and the publication of Rudyard Kipling's epochal poem "The White Man's Burden," The Gulf Stream takes on deeper layers of meaning. The storm on the horizon, the sharks and flying fish in the water, the sugarcane stalks protruding from the boat's hold-these are just some of the elements in what Wood reveals to be a richly symbolic tableau of the Black Atlantic world, linking the histories of Africa, the Caribbean, and the United States.
By examining the "present" that shaped The Gulf Stream more than a century ago, and by resurrecting half-forgotten elements of the "past" that sustain the painting's abiding mystery and power, Wood suggests a promising way to use history to comprehend art and art to fathom history.
