SIMPLY FABULOUS.......2006-07-01
There are several things about this book that puts it in a superior catagory. It's not only the photography, which is stunning, but the in depth information throughout the entire book. Different plastics were always a source of confusion for me but the explaination of just what the plastic was with a photo next to it taught me so much.
I agree with John's (reviewer below) assessment of pricing. I believe he was referring to self-serving pricing of which some authors are guilty. These prices are realistic and from what I see in the market place, prices that people are paying. This book has taught me to do my research.
The book is beautiful, well thought out and extremely well written. A must in the library of any serious bakelite or vintage plastic collector.
Beautiful and useful.......2006-06-29
I bought this book because I wanted to know something more about bangles, which I love and have been collecting for a while. I always wonder if I am being over-charged or "told a tale" about a bracelet from dealers at flea markets I go to or in antique stores. After reading this book, I can ask intelligent questions and have found that I am treated with so much more respect. In addition, the pictures are gorgeous. I actually leave the book out as a coffee table book when I am not using it.
FANTASTIC PLASTIC.......2006-05-02
Finally, a concise book on the identification of all the plastic bangles out there. As a dealer, I am always trying to explain to my customers how to differentiate between one bangle and another. Now I just tell them to buy the book. The pictures alone speak a thousand words.
Would I agree that there is an area of subjectiveness regarding pricing? Absolutely. But there is also a realistic price or perception as to what people see in a piece. In my experience, people are only willing to pay what they believe is a piece's value. Anyone can put a $500 price tag on a Diane Von Furstenberg bracelet, but that doesn't mean that it will sell.
As a dealer, I'd rather my customers have a realistic price guide as opposed to a self-serving "off the charts" price. All in all, I found the book to be helpful, exceptionally well layed out, beautiful in presentation, and worth every penny.

Bakelite Bangle: Price & Identification Guide.......2005-09-15
This is absolutely the most comprehensive book about Bakelite bangles. The photographs are gorgeous and it tells you all about the history of Bakelite, how to test for authenticity, and care for your bangles. I just look at the pictures for pleasure. I feel I am a more informed consumer when I look at estate and antique sales.
THE DEFINITIVE GUIDE TO GREAT VINTAGE PLASTICS!.......2004-07-12
I have recently amassed quite a collection of bakelite, having started collecting lucites, and branching out to the more sought after famed vintage phenolic plastic we all know and love as Bakelite, and all the other manufacturer sub-names it was produced under. I bought a few references recently, but none have compared to Karima Parry's wonderful "Bakelite Bangle Price and ID Guide".
First thing you will do is eat up all the eye candy this nice large and attractive volume has to offer, and after you finish drooling and wishing, you can read all about the different types of plastics, their history, chronology, and how they differ. Ways to identify the difference between Bakelite, Celluloid, Lucite and how to spot newly worked "fakelite" as well. The author is very knowledgeable and is also willing to share her knowledge with other collectors of this engrossing hobby. I look through this book so often, and find myself reading a different section each time, and sometimes just admiring all the wonderful shots of some of the most gorgeous coveted pieces in the bakelite realm. Karima also shows a nice section on lucites as well as celluloid, so you can get a good idea of these pieces when you might be lucky enough to find one, or consider buying.
I have had the personal pleasure of talking to this author, and she is a wonderful insightful person who took the time to answer all my questions and share her knowledge with me, and I am that much wiser for that, and buying her book. I currently have 3 plastic jewelry references, and hers is by far the best.
For anyone interested in collecting bakelite bangles, other vintage plastics, and gaining a nice working knowledge of them as well as a chance to see the most gorgeous pieces as examples, this book is indispensible. The only thing I would change is the price guide, since it is unfortunately hard to use this to price. I would like to see the dimensions and all the other pertinent information, on the page with the items and not in appendix form at the back. Otherwise, I highly recommend it as a must have for your bakelite reference library.
great bakelite bangle guide.......2001-08-23
absolutely loved the huge volume of beautifully photographed bangles. wonderfully written, definitive guide. i was amazed at the loveliness of the photos considering this is a paperback book. i really couldn't expect better quality in a hardback book. a great buy and a must-have for collectors of all levels. karima parry really knows her stuff and it shows. and the price guide really helps. some of the other books i've looked at overinflate the value. she gives a realistic range, from what i've seen in buying vintage bakelite over the years.
A must for all bakelite lovers!.......2000-02-27
I gave this book as a gift to my sister (and fellow bakelite lover.) It was the hardest thing to do! I wanted to keep it for myself. Karima has filled a niche in the bakelite market with her web-site and book. Easy to read, great pictures and VERY imformative! I highly recommend this book to all bakelite lovers. You will refer to this book over and over in your quest for the next great bakelite treasure.
The Best Bakelite Book Yet.......1999-11-29
This is by far the best book on Bakelite that I own. (I own every Bakelite book that is currently in print, and several that are out of print.) The hundreds of photographs of Bakelite and other plastic bracelets are colorfully crisp and clear, and the captions are informative and well-written. The text is intelligently organized, and covers quite a bit of information that has either never been addressed or has been incorrect in other books (a hot pin DOES penetrate genuine Bakelite, thank you Karima! ) The sections on Bakelite lexicon, including color names, are especially welcome. The author knows everything on this subject and has presented it wonderfully. If you will own only one Bakelite book, this is the one.

Book Description
With just a little inspiration from Country Living’s successful series, anyone can turn a small and awkward space into an appealing, cozy corner.
Every home has its tiny room, oddly shaped hallway, empty landing, or other difficult-to-decorate area—but these innovative and quick approaches are the first step in turning neglected spaces into models of decorative style. The topics covered range from Themes and Collections to Perfecting Your Palette; some of the ideas are as simple as varying the sizes of objects in a display to create visual interest. Other concepts—such as creatively mixing formal and informal elements—will free home decorators from tired and dull design tenets and bring “fresh air” into any décor. Smart tips and easy, enjoyable projects help jump-start the transformation, while detailed captions for the photos and many sidebars reveal exactly how the job was accomplished.

Haven brings together unique homes in which the dream of retreat has been made a reality. Each of these twenty hideaways offers something for every taste from a rustic barn to a desert oasis, from a modest tent cabin to an architecturally significant modern masterpiece. Cutting Edge Home Design.......2007-04-04
Create a getaway that's environmentally friendly and completely you. Learn how to live with nature instead of clambering all over it.
Beautiful Book, Environmentally Friendly Getaways and a Cool Tree House!.......2007-02-11
I got this book as a gift from my wishlist here at Amazon. I was thrilled with it, not only for the fact that it's a really nice book, pretty cover, very heavy pages & beautiful photography. I wanted it mainly for decorating purposes and I did get alot of unique decorating idea's from it, but it is much more than a decorating book.. 20 different homes, vacation retreats and wilderness camps are featured.. Each one displays a gorgeous getaway spot that has been created to blend in with it's surroundings while still offering the luxury and comfort of home. Many have optioned environmentally conscious methods and offer ideas for using recycled or repurposed materials in their construction. Most of the beautiful, comfortable, romantic, scenic getaways are created to co-habitate with nature without causing further harm to it..
This is a book on the cutting edge of home design. Many of the homes and getaways shown are designed for nature enthusiasts and with popular past times in mind, such as camping, hiking, bird watching & the beach. Many different styles are represented as well, from spare minamalism to the eccentric whimsy as illustrated in an adult treehouse paradise that looks rustic on the outside but is a luxurious showplace on the inside.
Really wonderful book. An absolute gem. I don't think the description here on amazon properly conveys how useful this book is for creating homes or getaways that are environmentally friendly. I highly recommend this it to anyone concerned with the environment, even if not in the market for building a new home, there are a lot of great ideas for conservation in remodeling and just everyday living. It's also just a beautifully crafted book and makes a great conversation piece as a coffee table book. I have had sitting out for months and many friends have enjoyed it, commenting on it's beauty & unique-ness.
Haven.......2006-06-29
The book arrived in pristine order and very quickly. I am very happy with it.

The author has looked for those places that are different from where we live. This charming book presents an interesting variety of small boutique hotels whose main feature is comfort without luxury-a simple and cozy atmosphere-that transmits to the reader a relaxing feeling, very far from the big hotels and resorts, that are often cold and impersonal.

pleasant photos - little supporting info.......2006-02-07
This is the sort of book which seems to have been compiled from photos of rooms the author never visited. Text is extemely vague. Bedrooms themselves appear from internal evidence (like plugs)to be in Europe. They are restful and achieveable looks but might not appeal to the person to whom "cozy" means busy fabric and twee clutter.
Like several similar books and magazines I've seen recently, this seems have had an incomplete final editorial review-- photos were duplicated.

Bright and inspiring!.......2001-07-05
I am enjoying the huge bright photos! All of the photos are sharp and show details amazingly well. Many are larger-than-life and remind me of the wonderful photography in the Singer (c) books. This is just the kind of traditional look I like, but with a few fresh twists, like color surprises. There is a darling quilt titled 'Squirrel Quilt' that is offered as for a boy's room and I'm imagining it as a wall hanging in my living room. I hadn't seen the pattern for the 'The Cat's Basket' before I bought the book, it immediately looked like something perfect for my tiny dog!
I very much appreciate the full-size patterns in the back, I don't have time for graph paper!
Published in 1997 or 1977?.......1999-08-09
This book was very nicely illustrated and the directions were well written. Unfortunately, I probably won't make a single project from this book. It was not what I expected. In my opinion, the projects in this book seem very out-dated and very out of style.

I received the book as a Christmas gift and truly love it! I am often looking into it and getting new ideas every time.

Great.......2007-08-25
This book was very well put together it was a nice read. You could finish it front to back in a single day and prbably will becuase u will not be able to put it down.
Disappointing.......2007-07-30
I couldn't ever get into this book because the main characters were so unlikeable. Why on earth does Mary stay friends with Jean? Jean is so rude to her on a daily basis. Jean does nothing but constantly nag her about her weight. JR has definitely learned her personality from her mother since she is just as rude as her mom.
I agree with a previous reviewer that the mention of a previous mytery that Jean had supposedly solved had me looking for a prior novel only to find that there is not one. I guess this was supposed to give Jean some legitimacy for butting her nose into police business but it didn't work.
This book is poorly written, jumps around way too much to follow and has a lot of holes that are impossible to ignore. I won't be reading any more of this series and would recommend to anyone considering this book to by all means skip it.

I love mysteries. I was recovering from surgery and was looking for something to read. I wanted something that was light and easy to read but enjoyable and fun to read too. This hit that target. I loved the little Indiana town. I really like the character Jean (the mother). She seemed real and a very down to earth person. I think this would make a nice series of books. I will be looking for another book from Ms. Marberg.
Awful.......2007-05-27
This is one of the worst books I've ever read.
Around page 40, I put it down and hopped onto Amazon thinking I had surely missed the first book in the series when Jean started talking about her previous amateur sleuthing case in detail. However, surprisingly, this was the first in the series. I found that to be a very questionable decision by the author.
The main character, Jean, was completely unlikeable, as was her daughter Jean Jr. Charlie was annoying, and Mary was just plain stupid. There were far too many characters to keep track of, and I found it annoying and trying to keep straight so many characters with similar names (Harmon and Harrison, Mac and Matt, Jean and Jean Jr.), or trying to figure out someone's gender (I was on page 150 of a 200-page book before finding out that the twins, Kelly and Kerry, were a boy and girl and not two girls). It made for a confusing story.
I also hated the fact that so many things happened "off-page." The reader is given vague hints as to what's going on ("She gave me the information I requested. Then I went out to make some phone calls. After the calls were made, I got in the van and drove to the next stop in the plan."). When I'm reading a book, I want to know what's going on -- I don't want vague references as we progress, only to be hit over the head with a bunch of fill-in-the-blanks as the author tries to wrap up the story.
Overall, the book was just bad, and if there were an option for 0 stars, I would've chosen that. I definitely won't be looking for anything else by this author, and will be dropping this one off at the local used bookstore, rather than even passing it on to anyone else.
Faux Finished: An Interior Design Mystery .......2007-05-22
I picked up a copy of Faux Finished not only because I am a mystery fan but I also have to admit I needed something to read on the plane when I flew to California and it looked like something I could finish on a cross country flight. A lot of times I have bought a book at the airport and discovered it was boring. This book was a "fun read" that held my attention literally from coast to coast. I will look for more from this writer.
