Valuable reprint of pre-Vatican II Church Documents.......2007-08-27
It is always difficult to quickly lay hands on Church Documents in English translation when doing research or for historical comparison - or just curiosity. Here we have a very handy compendium of the development of doctrine. Nothing is perfect and as the editors point out the book is for students primarily who can expect their professors to widen the horizons of reference and research. One simple example of value is the laying out of all the Creeds, seen usually only in the two "official" Apostles and Nicean Creeds. The work is dated 1954 so a word of caution: it is pre-Vatican II and must be viewed in light of documents that are from 1954 onwards; e.g., the documents of Vatican II and the official Catechism of the Catholic Church. One slight irritation is that the margin references are not explained at the beginning of the book. Another caution: in academic circles it is now normal to use the NRSV translation for study and not those used in the book. It is what is says it is , a source book for many Church documents; as such it is valuable and recommended to students and priests and deacons.
A Handy Reference Book for Students of Theology.......2001-08-09
This book is intended for college students who would like to make frequent reference to the teachings of the Church in their class room as well as private study and it serves the purpose well. Important documents of the Church are arranged under different topics of Catholic doctrine and are very easy to refer to. I have found this book more helpful than going to Densinger and most of the relevant and important documents are here. The documents are beautifully indexed with a topical index as well as a general index. There is also a table of reference to Denzinger's Enchiridion Symbolorum. It is indeed a very good contribution to the students of theology by the Jesuit Fathers of St Mary's College, Kansas.
Review from the Publisher.......2001-03-08
THE CHURCH TEACHES--Documents of the Church. 354 pages of famous dogmatic Church pronouncements: The Anthanasian Creed, Oath against Modernism, Interpretation of Sacred Scripture, Condemnation of the Modernists, Papal Infallibility, etc. Fully indexed; excellent reference!
I think the correct title is "The Church Teaches:...".......1998-03-09
This (if it is the same) book was first published before Vatican II. It is well indexed, and the Jesuit Fathers of St Mary's have done an excelent job of letting the Church speak for herself. This book should be on every Catholic's study shelf along with the Bible, the new Catechism set, and the Jerome Bible Commentary. My dog-eared copy has served me well by demonstrating the consistency of Catholic doctrine through history. I hope it comes back into print soon!

doll collecting with tina classic dolls from 1860 to 1960.......2003-05-01
I have collected dolls for many years, but always shyed away from antique dolls. I don't know much about them and felt I wouldn't know if I was recieving a fair price. This book has helped me see some of the antique dolls I find appealing are not so out of my price range. Although I cannot afford to buy a single doll at $1000.00 I can still find great looking antique dolls from $200-$500. Magazine listings, books, websites, clubs and doll doctors are included and I feel these are references I can trust. This book has sparked a fire in me to aquire some new antique doll for my collection. It was a great start to a learning process.

This Book & Cynthia Mattison are the BEST.......2002-07-04
I am a handicapped person and I just started collecting autographs via mail. I was using 2 other books at first and had about a 20 to 30 percent return using their addresses and techniques. I started using Cynthia's book and I am now around 70 to 80 percent. I receive 5 to 10 autographs per day and with her technique, I received a lot of photo's and personal notes from the celebrities. The turn around time was great and I can't believe the results I've been receiving. I sent Cynthia an email about some addresses that were wrong and she personally wrote me back to thank me(She also has her own Web Site). She is a very nice person and she really knows her autograph business. I would highly recommend this book to anyone who wants to collect autographs through the mail. Thanks Again Cynthia!

Principles of Judaism clearly explained .......2004-12-05
Rabbi Steinsaltz is one of the great Jewish teachers of this generation. His translation first to Hebrew and now in English of the Talmud have given many access to the Jewish traditional sources that they otherwise would not have had. In this book he essentially outlines the principles of the Jewish faith. The word 'Teshuvah' means ' to return ' and this process in Judaism is taken to be a lifelong and continual one. The Jewish person no matter how advanced in learning , or not is continually required to be striving to come closer to G-d. Rabbi Steinsaltz outlines here in a clear and effective way some of the ways by which this can be done. This book can be a great help to anyone who wishes to deepen in their practice of Judaism.
Adults Only.......2002-03-02
Although presented as a guide for the newly observant Jew, this is the one book that I recommend to non-Jews who ask for a book about Judaism. Rabbi Steinsaltz' very insightful and yet succinct work on authentic Judaism is written for adults who expect their theology and religious practices to be on a level commensurate with their secular education.
Intriguing.......2001-12-20
Some very contradictions indeed. Judiasm does welcome those who want to be more observant. However the laws of the sabbath, dress, social relations, and keeping kosher are very strict.
The All or Nothing and Where To Start Chapters are very helpful. Rabbi Steinsaltz has a patient tone that one should not make the jump too vigorously to become observant. Start with lighting sabbath candles and maybe wearing tefilin is a good suggestion.
This book contains some very good information on some of the laws and their meanings. The kashering process is especially captivating. Some of the contradicitions are a bit confusing for those whom are not too informed. However, many can strike up interesting discussions. The glossary is quite helpful. A nice book for those who are considering taking the step to becomming more observant jews.
Excellent book!!!.......2001-03-07
This book is an excellent book. It is well-written and flows smoothly. Like the title says, it is a guide for the newly observant jew. This book really bridges the gap from non-practicing to practicing. It explains why and how in an easy to read and understand format...I really enjoyed this book and have put it in my permanent library.
A practical guide to changing your life........2000-09-01
As a former Jew, I didn't think this book would have much to offer me, but I read it anyway. I'm glad I did. Much of the advice in this book can be applied to any religion or to any self-improvement goal. Its focus is, of course, on Judaism; and even here, I was surprised by what I learned. For example, newly observant Jews and former Jews actually have a lot in common. Both sought to experience religion more intensely. Former Jews did this by leaving a religion that is ridiculously burdensome and superstitious. Newly observant Jews did this by commiting themselves to a very exacting and demanding way of life. I must state that, in princlple, the cons of Judaism far outway the pros. Sabbath peace and festival joy do not compensate for the many demands or the unreasonable burdens and superstitions placed on the observer. Moreover, one can experience peace and joy without observing the thousands of picayune details of these "holy" days. Yet Steinsaltz showed me that Judaism can be fulfilling for some people.

This new edition of the prize-winning Encyclopaedia of Judaism is nearly double the size of the original three-volume edition. It features 52 new entries and includes the two separately published supplementary volumes and bibliographic updates.
This second edition offers an authoritative, comprehensive, and systematic presentation of the current state of scholarship on fundamental issues of Judaism, both past and present. While heavy emphasis is placed on the classical literature of Judaism and its history, this edition also includes principal entries on circumcision, genetic engineering, homosexuality, intermarriage in American Judaism, and other acutely contemporary issues.
Articles are written in essay form, and many are illustrated for further emphasis. The elaborate index facilitates ready access to significant people, places, and other factual information. This invaluable reference work is written for an audience from all backgrounds, scholars and general readers alike.
The Encyclopaedia of Judaism is an essential resource for those interested in learning more about Jewish life.

Jesus as a Feminist?.......2000-02-05
Leonard Swidler's Yeshua: A Model for Moderns is a long overdue examination of both the Jewishness of Jesus and its implications for modern Christianity. Swidler notes how Jesus' sayings were interpreted by His Jewish followers and how the full meaning of these sayings have sometimes been lost among Christians. This work is an instrument for further dialogue and understanding between Jews and Christians regarding their common history and teachings.
Yeshua : A Model for Moderns is also a landmark and long overdue study of Jesus' love for and desire to include women in His ministry. Swidler supplies multiple biblical examples of Jesus' breaking of taboos in order to teach others about the equality of women and His desire to preach to them. Not only does Swidler provide these examples, but he also places them within the historical and cultural context in which they occured. This gives the reader a greater understanding of Jesus' radical and loving approach to women and His desire to teach others to follow His example.

Book Description
Bittersweet Legacy is a collection of poetry, short stories and art inspired by the Holocaust. It is a book born of paradox, evoking remembrances of the darkest moments known to humankind by utilizing the power and beauty of the creative force. The writers and artists represented in this book are individuals who were driven to respond to the extremities that define the Holocaust. Some are accomplished in their fields, others have created in an attempt to understand and give form to their sorrow and quest for meaning. Each voice expresses a singular reprise. Together they forge a resounding voice in response to the six million voices that were silenced.

Excellent Review by Shofar Magazine.......2005-09-16
"Our mothers snipped along the ribs/ of the truth, with room, with room to let out/ in a year or so, since children grow." This particular stanza of "Sparing the Children" by Barbara Unger caused me to recall the deep, dark secret that was present in my own household as a child of the 50s. My mother was the keeper of this family mystery with my World War II veteran father as her accomplice. Many of these tragic "secrets" would not be revealed to me in their entirety until I was an adult and searching for ways to explain to my children and students what often seemed so unexplainable. In Bittersweet Legacy: Creative Responses to the Holocaust, authors and artists help us begin to comprehend the incomprehensible as they share their Holocaust experiences. Multiple perspectives are one of the keys to the power of this collection; paintings, sculptures, and sketches mingle with poems, short stories, journal entries, and personal narrative. Thematic chapter headings like "Through the Eyes of a Child" and "Speaking to the Enemy" take the reader on a journey crowded with words and images. This journey of and about the Shoah gains momentum as it guides the reader from chapter to chapter, from one perception to another, establishing a personal link between contributors and the readers.
The organization of Bittersweet Legacy conducts the reader from decade to decade through the unique perceptions of individual artists. The opening chapter, "The American Experience of the Holocaust," examines the many ways in which news of the Holocaust entered or was kept out of our lives. It speaks of denial, first-hand experiences, and attempts to understand from afar. Vera Schwartz's free-verse poem, "The Jewish Experience," describes a visit to Yad Vashem through the eyes of the American child, while "Our Bones Don't Belong to Us," a painting by Leah Korica, suggests our lack of control over our destiny. In Chapter 2, "Through the Eyes of a Child," the reader encounters a myriad of childhood experiences. The Hidden Child by Susan Terris describes the memories of a mother and child hidden by a Dutch family; a linocut entitled Auschwitz #6 combines words with images to describe a child who survived the gas chambers yet remembers the experiments of Mengele close to her workplace in the camp. The third chapter, "Survival," offers a crescendo of horrific images and words that must be seen and read in order to be fully appreciated. One of the more elaborate works of art in this section is the six-panel oil painting by Chaim Goldberg. While presented here in miniature, the symbolism is no less poignant as the artist represents the trains that moved victims to the death camps alongside images of the Warsaw Ghetto uprising.
The final three chapters carry the reader into the present and the aftershocks of survival. The chapter entitled "Inheritance" shares many tales of children of survivors. In the free verse peice entitled Belated Kaddish, Cynthia Moskowitz Brody memorializes both those murdered and those who attempted to save them. This moving dedication concludes: "We both carry the torch/ to be passed down/ to our children/ and their children/ so that they will learn/ the true menaning of hero." Also quite striking in this section are several pieces written by young adolescents during the Holocaust. In My Weeping Willow Laura Zusman shares the feelings of a twelve-year-old girl dealing with the horror of the Holocaust. The tree is strong like her parents, and she writes, "I see Daddy in the leaves./ Each leaf is one of us/ protecting me from Them."
The complex attitudes of survivors and the children of survivors toward their persecutors form the theme of the fifth chapter, "Facing the Enemy." Authors and artists struggle to understand why this happened and in some cases examine the possibility of forgiveness. In Speaking to One of Germany's Sons, poet Elizabeth Rosner experiences modern-day Germany as "familiar ghosts hover/ at both our shoulders/ whispering in the voices of/ our parents/ and the dead." Bonnie Salomon, the child of survivors, describes a visit to Dachau, which she made after completing medical school in Europe in the journal excerpt, Munich. May, 1987. As she tours the camp grounds, explores the walls of the gas chamber, and examines the barracks where so many suffered, she must also come to terms with her own anger. She closes her visit with this thought: "I took one last photo-the subway stop sign "Dachau." I wanted to remember that this is 1987, and that Dachau is a subway stop, and children call it home."
In the final chapter, "Chosen," the contributors deal with the continuation of faith, how survivors define themselves as Jews following the Holocaust, and the concept of heroism. Poet Roald Hoffman, writing in memory of Primo Levi, asks the always-present question, "Who shall speak for the dead?" in his work entitled Speaker for the Dead. The final contribution in the book is a collage by Elly Simmons entitled My Mother, My Daughter-A Tree of Life. Using natural and religious symbols, the artist shares her conception of the cycle of eternity through the women of the family. Her work is a very fitting way to end the journey through this deeply personal collection of Holocaust experiences.
One cannot help being deeply moved by the profound and often intimate expressions offered in Bittersweet Legacy. Only the use of color and enlargement of the photographs of the artwork could enhance the emotional power of this collection. As is so often the case, art makes available to us events, emotions, and experiences that would be otherwise impossible to share. As readers we should thank all of those who collaborated in the creation of this collection for giving us this new and moving path toward understanding.

the healing power of art.......2001-12-05
This is an important and powerful book that responds with passionate complexity to a very difficult subject. Clearly the Holocaust has been addressed many times and in many different ways through the media over the past 50 years, but this approach is unique. The artists represented in this volume have chosen to write and make art as the best means for expressing both pain and hope, anguish and redemption. It's inspiring to see how creativity and self-expression can offer possibilities for healing, and this is a message that is particularly relevant in the face of ever-continuing forms of darkness and despair. Anyone who appreciates eloquent writing and meaningful visual art will find work to be moved and enlightened by in this collection.

Book Description
In ancient Israelite sacrifice as represented in the Hebrew Bible, the handling and use of the blood of sacrificed animals took many forms and served different functions. The Hebrew Bible refers to tossing sacrificial blood onto an altar or an assembly of people, daubing it on the altar's horns or parts of the human body, and sprinkling it on or in front of sacred objects.
William Gilders investigates the significance of these blood rituals. Offering a close reading of Leviticus 17:11, Gilders emphasizes the secondary and innovative character of this biblical text, which has often been treated as a key for understanding biblical blood ritual.
Focusing on the analysis of practice, Gilders finds that blood manipulation is regularly marked as elite activity, serving as an index of social relationships and hierarchies. Blood rituals also regulate access to sacred spaces and define the limits of such spaces. Drawing on recent theoretical approaches to ritual practices, this study offers a sophisticated new understanding of ancient rites.

Book Description
This unique reference is a comprehensive guide to modern theological thought. In 48 self-contained articles, an international team of theologians and practitioners of the Christian and Jewish faiths investigate and consider aspects of theology. They strive to be practical, but not partisan as they explore the applications of modern theology in the light of Christianity's place in the modern world. The Companion Encyclopedia of Theology is divided into six parts. The first three deal with major foundational aspects of Western theological reflection: the Hebrew and Christian Bible, the Tradition, and the contribution of Philosophy. The second half of the Companion is concerned with applications in relation to spirituality, contemporary ethics, and issues of present-day theological construction.
The 48 essays are descriptive, informative, and analytical. They cover a wide range of contemporary topics including Feminism in the Philosophy of Religion, The Idea of Christian Ethics, Violence, Warfare and Peace, and many more. At the end of each article, there are suggestions for further reading and the work is concluded with a comprehensive index.
The Companion is a valuable reference for students and professors and both lay and clerical practitioners of Christian and Jewish theology.
