The air in your automobile tires exerts a pressure of 28 to 36 pounds per square inch. The bubbles in a bottle of Champagne exert 95 psi. The next time you're feeling stressed, will you go for a drive or pop a cork? If you answered the latter, you're sure to enjoy Champagne Cocktails by Anistatia Miller, Jared Brown, and Don Gatterdam. No strangers to the chronicling of the good life, Idaho-based Miller and Brown are the authors of Shaken Not Stirred: A Celebration of the Martini; Gatterdam is the Manhattan-based director of custom publishing for the Wine Spectator and Cigar Aficionado folks. In 114 splashily colorful pages effervescently topped with sparkling quotes and liquid lore, readers and sippers will discover more than 100 recipes combining that jewel of the vintner's art with the craft of the mixologist.

Whether you fancy the purity of the Classic Champagne Cocktail--that alliance of sparkling wine and bitters that Esquire called one of the Ten Best Cocktails of 1934--or lean to the adventurous Mrs. Beeton's Champagne Cup--the one with the fresh borage sprigs--you'll be won over by this breezy treatise. Garnishing the pages of recipes and bartender's advice (citrus twists dropped in the glass tend to dissipate the bubbles quicker; ingredients should go into the drink in ascending order of expense) are wine wisdom and witticism from such diverse sources as Thackeray and Austin Powers, Babette's Feast and Absolutely Fabulous. To be fair, some of the potions are pretty funky--one of the ingredients in a Red Ambrosia is Hawaiian Punch, and mixing up a Gloria should allow you to use up that bottle of lychee liqueur you've been saving for just the right occasion. And while there is a short chapter featuring lists of the top sparkling producers worldwide, a concoction such as the "Diabolitan" featuring anisette, gin, and liqueurs of strawberry and pear might be budgetarily better-suited to Cooks than Krug. Yet where else could one discover the difference between a Mimosa and a Buck's Fizz while learning how to shear the neck off a bottle with a cutlass? No matter whether you're pouring a Spanish cava, a German sekt, or something French, you'll find it in the pages of Champagne Cocktails. --Tony Mason

Book Description

Upon tasting Champagne for the first time, Dom Perignon called out to his assistants,"Come Quickly, I'm Drinking Stars!"

So if Champagne is heaven in a glass, why mix it in a cocktail? It's simple: Champagne is the pinnacle of the winemaker's art, while the cocktail is the crowning jewel of the mixologist's craft. When combined, the result is a beverage unrivaled in decadence, pleasure, and inspiration.

Champagne Cocktails proudly presents more than 100 traditional and nouveau concoctions--from Bellini to the Southern Belle to the Mambo King--plus toasts, jokes, and celebrity lore. Also featured are party tips, recipes for complementary foods, a listing of Champagne and sparkling wine producers, and a directory of the world's posphest Champagne lounges.

The Champagne connoisseur will toast these finer points of culture and fizziology, while the novice will delight in adding a new sparkle to the day.

Book Description

This is a construction manual intended for both budding novices and experienced bird breeders alike. Comprehensively written and professionally illustrated, the book is loaded with construction details, diagrams and pictures, material lists, insulating and finishing techniques and tips, environmental concerns, simple step by step instructions and, essentially, everything you need to know about building everything you need for your birds.

Every plan and construction detail is compiled from years of hands on experience by the author in the raising and breeding of birds ranging from finches, canaries and larger softbills to most of the hardbills including (but not limited to) parakeets, budgies, and cockatiels, on up to amazons, cockatoos, macaws, and so on. There are projects ranging from simple houses, cages, breeding and nesting quarters to small, medium, large and grand scale aviaries, all designed and detailed with both the beginning hobbyist and serious fancier, alike, in mind.

Because many of the aviary designs are based on modular construction, they contain the flexibility to start small and expand or start big and go even bigger. The material & costs have been considered carefully, and the information contained in the book will allow anyone to calculate exactly what is needed before starting actual construction. This makes it possible for the builder to contact material suppliers in his/her local area, obtain prices, and, if necessary, scale back the design to meet the current budget (and make plans to expand in the future). The designs require inexpensive, non-specialized, easy to obtain materials assembled in a straight-forward manner with the minimum tools, and give you strong, durable housing that you can be tailor-made for a specific breed of bird or modified as needed. Included also are construction plans for feeders, waterers, nesting humidifiers, hospital quarters, shipping and carrying cages, electrical wiring, plumbing and ventilation plans for the aviary, plus a host of other ideas, construction tips and general information seldom found in other bird publications.

Copyrighted and published by the author in 1973, the book has sold over 20,000 copies worldwide through the years. Although the materials were reviewed and updated in 1996 to ensure up-to-date information, the content has remained the same. While the book was written for aviculturists, permission was granted in 1990 to an instructor at University of California Berkeley to use excerpts from the book in a class on general construction.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Practical, easy and brilliant!.......2005-06-28

I waited a long time to get this book and it was worth every moment. The designs are well thought out and easy for even the mechanically challenged to understand. The author has devised an aviary/cage system that can be increased or decreased at will, by adding or subtracting carefully yet simply designed panels. Each panel fulfills a particular function of the whole to form the basic unit and you can add unlimited units to form your ideal facility. This information is timeless and I am very pleased.

5 out of 5 stars Good plans for modular building.......2005-02-01

This book lays out a good set of plans for starting small and working your way up to as large a breeding operation as you like. I am adept at building small animal pens, and I've been doing so for several decades, on a hobby basis. I was still impressed with the simple brilliance of this book.

2 out of 5 stars Not for the average suburban hobbyist.......2003-08-07

Potential purchasers of this booklet should be aware that the author is very serious about his birds. What he considers a "quite small" aviary, "for the aviculturist who has only restricted land area for his hobby", measures 11 by 16 feet. A "fairly large" one is 38 by 24 feet, complete with concrete foundation, plumbing, heating, electric lights, and 12 foot ceilings.
If, like me, you are looking for ideas for a small backyard aviary for a few canaries, you should look elsewhere. This publication contains plans for only 6 aviaries. Four are far too large for the average suburban lot, unless you are willing to knock down your house first, and the other two are so rudimentary that plans are hardly necessary.

5 out of 5 stars Exceptional plans, better than what I expected........2003-02-22

I needed a means by which to build aviaries for my birds. I have built one out of the book, and it is great. I'm most impressed with the bird "hospital" cage.. It works exactly as described. My first impression when I received the book was not that great. The drawings were clear, directions clear, but I guess on some level I expected something more than what looked like a college study packet from Kinko's. The designs in this book and the subsequent modifications I've made to them to fit my needs have been outstanding. One needs only a modicum of building expertise, a knucklehead can put the designes together. Highly recommended... again, this is coming from someone who has actually built items off the plans in the book. It's not a glitzy book, but doggon functional.

5 out of 5 stars Back to Basics or Simplicity Plus for the birds........2002-11-15

Considering the first printing was in 1973, revised in 1996, and its now 2002, this book still holds firm for the basic needs of birds. From the housing needs to the transportation needs. It is as complete as a book can be without being overwhelming for the beginner hobbyist. One aviary near me was built from this book. It covers all the birds needs from spring to winter. Its well constructed and easy access to clean. The other needs of the birds are also covered so you get the complete program in one book. Size and style changes for different birds is covered.
After reading the editorial reviews, the author was based in N America and the metric system was not used much in the 1970's, so I appreciate the simple measurement charts and layouts for building what is needed. I have one book to keep, one to share, and one to mark my progress in. Thank you Don LaRosa for such a great job of writing a Simplicity Plus Book !!

3 out of 5 stars great information, dated houses though ........2004-03-09

This book is large on information regarding feeding birds, and is packed full with great suggestions, I was pleased to find a food chart for different birds etc, and a few of the bird houses are nice, however I was so shocked to see this book was published in the 1990's, as some of the plans are so dated, and SO 70s looking! Very hokey. I would recommend this book at a good price just to read the info and get the couple of good plans, definetly wouldnt pay full price.

                5 out of 5 stars Great book........2007-01-22

I found this book is great for someone who wants to start-up in patchwork quilting.

Highly recommend this one. Very easy to follow.

                5 out of 5 stars Muito Bom.......2006-11-10

                3 out of 5 stars cute projects.......2003-07-25

I checked this book out from the library enough times that I decided it would be best to own it! I love the cute animal quilt projects. I've just made the sheep quilt so far. All the pattern/quilt strip pieces didn't fit together as well as I would've liked, but if you're an experienced seamstress, you can still make it/them work for you. I think the author could've done a better job with making the original cutting measurements work together without having to stretch pieces to make them fit. As I said, you can still make it work for you. These projects are all sewn in large strips, sewn together, then cut down to smaller sizes; then sewn together. So, in the end, you haven't had to cut a bunch of tiny squares; its a time saving way to sew quilts. And, everyone likes to save time. The quilt designs are adorable and true to Debbie Mum's style. If you've ever seen her calendar's, you know what I mean.

5 out of 5 stars Very Easy Quilting.......2001-10-23

This book makes an excellent addition to any quilting library. It covers applique', tea dying, fabric selection, rotary cutting, and provides 10 tried and true quilting timesavers. Helpful hints for projects are sprinkled throughout the book.

All of the projects include clear, concise instructions and illustrations. The projects provide exact amounts of fabric to pre-buy. The illustrations in the book are very helpful and really motivate one to experiment.

This book truly takes the fear out of quiltmaking and you can easily do this as a beginner. All you need is the desire to sew the multitude of provided projects. I've made four of the projects out of the book with no difficulties and in a very short period of time.

Honestly, my greatest challenge with the book has been selecting the project to start on. There's just so darn many good ones.

5 out of 5 stars A fun and easy way of quilting.......2001-09-06

This book is fabulous not only for the experimented quilter but also for the beginner. The instructions are easy to follow and the photographs of the finish product as well as the setting are inspirational. Debbie Mumm took advantage of her background as a designer resulting in quilts that are perfects in every sense. Her suggested color combinations are suitable for every taste. Since I bought this book I am always looking for her books. This book should be on every quilter's library.
