This book was full of off-the-wall recipes. Being a Betty Crocker cookbook and advertised as the Complete Thanksgiving Cookbook, I figured the recipes would be more traditional. I was disappointed.
A good book for using for cooking your first thanksgiving.......2006-09-22
Lots of good recipes especially for someone attempting to fix their first thanksgiving meal. Most are easy to make, lots of both traditional and updated holiday recipes. The instructions are easy to follow. Not so many recipes to choose from but makes it easier to plan a meal.
An On Target Cookbook!.......2004-11-17
The trouble with a lot of Thanksgiving cookbooks is that they throw so many new and quite exotic dishes at the reader. I think most people still prefer their Thanksgiving with all of the traditional dishes.
Betty Crocker's book does just that while still giving you some new things to try, without making them too intimidating for the novice cook. Add to that the best sections of the book may be the sections on planning your dinner from shopping to all the make-aheads to getting the turkey ready for the oven.
You'll find all of the great traditional fare in this book with straight forward and easy to follow recipes no matter what the size of your gathering.
If your a traditionalist like me, then this is the book for you.

A compilation of more than 200 recipes devised by cookbook author Joanne Weir, the large-scale book provides stylish recipes featuring seasonal ingredients plus color photos of the dishes and the bounty they highlight. While the book's organizing principle seems threadbare, the recipes are worthwhile and would work equally well for entertaining as well as for cooks seeking such prescribed inspiration for year-round meal planning. Each of the four seasonally themed chapters is divided into openers, soups, salads, side dishes, main courses, and desserts. "Spring," for example, offers such dishes as Artichoke and Lemon Fritters, Sorrel Soup, Peppered Salmon with Snow Peas and Ginger, and Rhubarb and Strawberry Crisp. More standouts, from across the seasonal board, include Nut-Crusted Trout with Romesco Sauce, Mushroom and Stilton Galette, Lamb Chops with Prune Chutney, and Pappardelle with Red-Wine Stewed Duck. Desserts such as Chocolate Hazelnut Torte and Cranberry Upside-Down Cake, two "winter" offerings, would be hard to turn down. Beautiful cookbook with great seasonal recipes.......2000-09-16
This book has a lot of beautiful pictures and wonderful recipes. It has a great guide on seasonal fruits and vegetables, their availabilty, and certain techniques on preparing fruits and vegetables which is very helpful. Though these are not recipes I would use everyday there are great recipes to use when you have dinner guests or just want to have a nice meal.

Obscure Ingredients but Wonderful Dishes.......2004-02-20
I probably would not recommend this book for a beginning cook unless they wanted to decorate with it. However, for the advanced cook I think that this would be a very nice gift. You can count on William's Sonoma to not only create a beautiful meal but also one to make one that is delightful to the taste.
Recently I have been expanding my knowledge of cooking fowl and the book had an excellent recipe for Cornish Game Hens that would please anyone at a nice dinner party. Although the book is broken into seasons and many of the dishes are definitely more for a hearty winter than a hot summer, you do not necessarily need to be limited to cooking the recipes at those seasons. I would caution the cook to have a good grocery resource however as some of their ingredients are a bit difficult to find; hence the four and not five stars.
Almost perfect, but definitely worth buying.......2003-10-31
Yes, almost perfect. I do have one complaint which I will get to in a second. First things first, the recipes are to die for. Williams-Sonoma has captured the seasons splendidly with this hardcover book, providing multiple recipes for all four seasons. What is wonderful is the breakup in the book of the various courses. Each season starts with starters (naturally), moves on to soups and salads, then entrees, next vegetable and side dishes, and finally to desserts. It's a great way to organize your own Fall, Spring, Winter, or Summer dinner party.
The recipes are well-written with easy to understand directions and measurements. The recipes are for the most part easy to make, with only a few of them requiring much expertise. This is a great book for beginners as well as pros.
The pictures are colorful and inviting and accurately display the recipes with visual suggestions for serving the dish. My one complaint (as promised), though, is that not every recipe has a picture and there is only one photo per recipe. Perhaps I'm too used to multiple staging photos for recipes, but I found that it's always helpful to have at least one shot of the finished product per dish. If that's not a bother for you, then you're in good hands. I might be pickier than others.
Overall, a tremendous buy, truly worth adding to your culinary library. Again, very close in my mind to 5 stars, but just not quite there yet.

Focus On Autumn.......2001-11-01
This cookbook tackles perhaps the most difficult challenge vegetarians face. While there is a wide range of produce that comes into its own in the Autumn, and the Thanksgiving table usually holds an array of plant-based foodstuffs, there is nevertheless no other gathering in U.S. culture that brings expectations of a certain dish. And flesh-based it is. Without the turkey, how do vegetarians host Thanksgiving? Vegetarian Times addresses the problem in this cookbook. There is an attempt to provide several impressive-looking dishes that can take the central place of the poultry. A number of roulades, tangines, and deep dish recipes make the effort.
The focus on Fall dishes makes the book a good resource, especially for those people who reluctantly let go of the summer bounty of tomatoes, peppers, zucchini, etc. The dishes apply not only to the holiday meal but to all late year suppers. There are a number of appetizers and first course recipes that allow for any entertaining. In fact, the chapters include Appetizers, Beverages, Soups, Salads, Entrees, Sides, Gravies/Table Sauces, Breads, and Desserts. There a number of vegan options, including vegan pumpkin pie.
At times the recipes are complicated or use perhaps too many ingredients considering alternative preparation methods I've used. Also, there are a few dishes that fall on the bland side when prepared as directed. However, there are some stand-outs: Endive Spears with Goat Cheese and Roasted Garlic; Herbed White Bean Pate; Cider; Mock Champagne; Roasted Red Pepper and Sweet Potato Soup; Pear Salad With Raspberry Vinaigrette; Roasted Asparagus Salad; Vegetable Pancakes with Roasted Plum Sauce; Squash and Spinach Risotto; Baked Pumpkin Stuffed With Vegetable Pilaf; Shiitake and Potato Pot Pie with Polenta Crust; Glazed Shallots and Walnuts; Sweet Potato Stuffing; Great Winter Bread Pudding; and of course the Pumpkin Pie.

I love this book it caters for the beginner straight up to advance crochet patterns. I have no problems recommending this book for someone who loves pineapple patterns. Just great.
Beautiful doilies!!.......2007-10-01
The doilies are really beautiful. All of them. Range in size from approx. 8" to 29". The photos are beautiful but the instructions can be difficult. They have some written instructions which, quite frankly, I don't understand at all. Either they are a style I don't understand or they are a poor translation. But they are also in that diagram style so you have to learn to read the symbols. Which is easier than I thought, so I don't mind. I've run in to a couple places I still couldn't figure out but I'm not an expert. I think the book is worth the money I paid. I look at it over and over and have started 5 doilies already because they are so so pretty! I should also say that most of the patterns are for round doilies but there is a triangle, a rectangle, a couple ovals and a pillow cover. I rated the book a 4 because it is so beautiful but the instructions can be sketchy. I really do recommend this book.

I used to get Magic Crochet pattern books years ago, that only had doilies. Later on they added other crochet patterns, scarves, sweaters, etc. which steered me away from them. I have not been able to find a doily pattern book with a visual pattern until Pineapple Lace: with complete diagrams. I would recommend to anyone who crochets, beginner or expert. It is so much easier to look at the pattern instead of having to read it.

Helped Me Tremendously.......2002-12-31
I used this book to plan my own kitchen and it helped me avoid mistakes. I was very tight on space in my kitchen/dining area, therefore every inch counted. It gives great guidelines for minimum space requirements. For example, it tells you how much space is needed between a wall and a table; how much space is necessary for each person at a table; how much countertop space should be left by the refrigerator or near the cooktop; how wide an island should be; how much space is necessary for the aisle in a kitchen so 2 people can work, etc.
Also included is assessing your needs and taking an inventory of your current kitchen which I found useful.
Other sections such as choosing fixtures and appliances or selecting materials weren't as beneficial to me personally, but overall I would highly recommend this book to someone planning their own kitchen - it gives some good solid guidelines and things to consider when planning a kitchen.
Great Basic Design Book.......2000-08-05
If you are beginning to think about remodeling your kitchen, read this book first! This book takes you through the basic steps of redesigning your kitchen, covering options for design, layout, storage, and appliances. The kitchens pictured are stunning, and run the gamut from Parade of Homes/celebrity level to actually affordable.
I was able to see some wonderful options that are realistic, along with a couple dream items I may splurge on. While I have bought other design books and magazines since, this is still my favorite. It made me excited about remodeling!

This must be the best value kitchen design on the market. It looks at basic design concepts, the work triangle, lighting, color and storage. It compares well with some considerably more expensive texts. It provides an overview suitable for anyone designing or changing their kitchen. It does not cover constructional aspects in any depth but, there are other books which cover this. Buy this book first!
