Customer Reviews:
Fantastic book!.......2003-01-19
I know Martha Stewart has had bad press lately but her ideas are still pretty cool (plus this book was from a few years ago). I'm having a blast with this book because I love to go antiquing and looking for stuff to make things with. Granted, you may not find the extact items she uses but you can certainly find the same general items (e.g. egg cups, button covers, vintage fabrics). I really like how the book is laid out in terms of glass, textiles, etc. Also, she has tips for caring and cleaning different types of items which is great since you generally need to clean things that you find at flea markets etc. The ideas are all really neat and really they are easy to do. Five stars all around from me. The ideas I've gotten from this book have really spawned my creativity to make other sorts of things too. Lots of fun!
Very thin & not very helpful.......2003-01-10
Try Second-Hand Style: Finding and Renewing Antique Treasures or Decorating With Flea Market Finds or Flea Market Decorating (Better Homes and Gardens Books). I love these three books.
Pretty good if this is your thing.......2002-12-24
I have never seen some of those things available when I've done some scrounging, but the ideas to use them are pretty interesting. My favorite is the linen cabinet made from the shutter doors; you'd have to see it to understand what I mean. Having met a man who is into collecting, I thought we could use it, but so far, not. Thumb through it, see if it's for you.

Customer Reviews:
A good overview.......2005-08-07
I'm no avid garage saler or flea marketer, but I picked this book up from the library to see what some of my stuff might be worth.
The author first gives some tips on how to buy and sell goods, what to look for condition-wise, and how to learn more about a certain type of goods. Then the book lists types of collectibles in alphabetical order, giving a short history of the company or collectible, with values of some of the more valuable examples of each type listed.
Of course, such a book can't be completely comprehensive, but this one does give lots of resources (both books and individuals) for further study in each type of collectible. It seemed very heavy on pottery and dinnerware companies, but did have a good mix of other items (toys, Coca-Cola items, political buttons...). It's not really the type of book you should browse through from front to back, as I did, because it's just so overwhelming! But I did learn a little that probably stuck with me.
The word nerd in me had to smile at all the misspellings and bad grammar throughout the book, but it's a minor point.
If you're into the collectible scene, but just starting out, this would be a good starting point for you.

Garage flea bags look no further.......2001-02-27
This must be the ultimate book for bargain collecta'billies, it has so many things that are worth scratching through the markets and greasing through the garages for. It's aim is subtle and its punch is vital, this book highlights some amazing things that "not many people know" about. For example, the amount of money that can actually be made from this itchingly glorious of all pastimes.
regards,
Martyn Jones
Garage Sale and Flea Market Annual.......2000-10-26
The Garage Sale and Flea Market Annual contains an interesting assortment of items. Did you know that there are collectors for items such as bubble bath containers, used playing cards, cereal boxes, children's lunch boxes, and sheet music? This book lists collectibles not mentioned in other price guides. Sources for additional information in each category as well as experts are included.
Wide variety of collectible covered.......2000-07-28
This book covers a tremendous variety of collectibles and will be very useful for the collector, established or aspiring dealer. If focuses on items made from the 1940's on, those things that most often turn up at garage sales and flea markets. Certainly the idea behind the book is to inform you of current price trends so you can spot bargains, whether for your own collection or resale. The introduction gives some generally helpful advice on sources and marketing. The impact of the internet is recognized but there are still many hands-on buying opportunities and the information here is equally useful in internet shopping. The prices listed are what are considered to be average dealer retail and do not take into account the huge premiums that some items have achieved in internet sales.
Thousands of items are listed in nearly 500 pages. The categories are too numerous to mention in detail but as you would expect, glassware, pottery and porcelain are extensively covered with many styles and manufacturers listed. A few highlights are pictured from each category and the listings are cross-sections of what is available and not intended to be complete lists of everything ever made. A brief background and sources of additional information are included for each category. This may include an expert, collector's club, newsletter or book on the subject.
Some of the other sections I found interesting are advertising character collectibles, children's books, Beatles & Elvis collectibles, cameras, cookie jars, dolls, costume jewelry, kitchen items, salt shakers, toys, and yes, even Barbie dolls and Beanie Babies. Also included are items that are just attaining collectible status with unknown potential such as calculators and transistor radios.
An indispensable, invaluable, authoritative guide........2000-04-06
Garage Sale & Flea Market Annual, 8th Edition provides no color photos but extensive current values on collectibles, antiques, and items likely to be found at flea markets and garage sales make for an invaluable guide.

Can I tag along???.......2007-05-15
Mention a garage sale or a flea market, my hands are on the keys and I am moving at the speed of light. I love to scour sales for great finds and Martha has ideas to put your treasures to work in your home. As with any suggestion books, some will not be your cup of tea. But I use these ideas to bounce off into other creative areas. Don't forget thrift stores. Hey, rich people have to drop off their items somewhere! I love my St. Vinny's and Goodwill stores. When I win the lottery, I am going to just cruise all week long trooling for treasures. Just don't tell my husband, he hasn't been able to get the car in the garage for years.

Customer Reviews:
Easy and Fun Read! I couldn't put it down!!.......2007-10-07
My husband and I have been selling on ebay for about three years now, and we're always looking for new information to help improve our business. This book gave us a lot of great ideas which we put into action the first week after reading. It's an easy book to read and understand, and we both couldn't put it down until we were finished reading. If you're not into ebay, it also gives great advise on other avenues for selling your goods. Buy this book, you'll be pleased!
Worked Like MAGIC.......2007-09-10
This is a great book that I recommend. I purchased the book for the guide but it provided so much more. I have been selling on eBay part time but was always in need of things to sell - NO MORE. Thanks to this book, my husband and I went to our first storage shed auction (recommended by the authors) and we purchased one full of great things. Inside the shed we purchased are some great antiques, some very nice china, some English porcelain figurines, tools but the best was a jewelry box. The jewelry box had 2 14kt gold necklaces and a 14kt gold ring with a beautiful ruby. It also was filled with tons of very nice costume jewelry! We are going to make a ton of money off this one purchase - thank you Daren and Nancy for this wonderful book - I Bought it - I'm selling it - and I am MAKING MONEY -- YA
Very Good Book - Recommended.......2007-07-26
Very good book - informative and interesting - provides useful information - I reccomend it.
Already paid for itself !.......2007-07-24
I am very excited about this book - I have only had it for two weeks and I have already made back three times the money of what I paid for the book! The advice is straightforward and the Good, Better, Best guide in the back helps me find the right items to buy so I don't make mistakes or miss opportunities. This is not one of those get-rich-quick books -that tells people to invest in real estate or the stock market. This is a great book about reselling (or Being a Flipster) everyday items and luxury items -that can be found at auctions, garage sales and flea-markets. I started out with just $10.00 on my first trip and was able to buy great stuff for resale. ! It is very exciting to be able to buy something and then resell it for a profit. It is like going to Las Vegas and pulling down the arm on a winning slot machine - but you win EVERYTIME
Insightful and Informative.......2007-07-22
I really enjoyed reading this book - it provides useful information on how to buy smartly and invest in your purchases instead of just buying things because some ad on TV tells you to do so. I think any person who buys things to resell or is planning on trying that business must have this book! However, you do not have to be an eBay seller to get beneficial tips from this book. I do not plan to buy items for resell - yet, I found their information practical and helpful for my everyday life. The information is presented in an easy to read and understand format - conversational and actually very entertaining.

Ultimate Lighting Design (Ultimate)
ASIN: 1592532470 |
Book Description
No matter how beautifully decorated a room is, it doesn't matter if no one can see it. Interior designers know the importance of good lighting placement, because it is the key that can literally transform a home. Although correct lighting placement is this book's central theme, it goes much further to discuss everything from basic lighting principles and practices to new technologies, issues of energy efficiency, and new trends in computer automation, followed by a practical guide for analysis and planning, execution, and installation, offering creative solutions to a wide range of illumination issues.
While the information is oriented to a professional design audience, the practical information and advice is just as useful to do-it-yourselfers and homeowners who take on their own lighting projects.
Each topic includes a visual guide and the author even includes room-by-room lighting strategies. Full-color photographs of interiors and drawings illustrate detail and specifics of placements and design features.
Customer Reviews:
Basic Principles... Advanced Application.......2007-01-15
While this book is less How-To and more Inspiration, it is a great book for both the home owner and the home planner. It focuses on basic lighting principles (which are useful for anyone trying to properly light their home) illustrated through advanced lighting applications (architectural elements and features incorporated during the planning, building, or renovating of a home).
It illustrates lighting techniques for each room in the home with emphasis on different areas of the room that require different kinds of lighting. Lighting for both day and night, and a special section on exteriors, are explored.
The examples and illustrations in this book are from homes where lighting design was considered in the initial construction, and money and resources were apparently not an object. While unattainable, they are inspirational.
For those of us who don't own our home, or cannot remodel (due to financial, zoning or other restrictions) this book provides some basic lighting principles that are still useful and applicable when lighting a home. In general, there are three levels of lighting to complete any room:
1. Ambient lighting-an indirect light that provides overall illumination
2. Task Lighting-focused light for work spaces (ie-kitchen counters, desk-tops, bedsides, reading chairs, etc.)
3. Accent lighting-any light used to draw attention to a featured object (art, sculpture, architectural elements)
Thought the examples are not really anything you could achieve in your own home, it gives you ideas on how to incorporate these types of lighting for both day and night, and interior and exterior.
The book title really says it all.......2007-01-06
With this book, there is truth in advertising. I'm an architect and I do a lot of resdential design. I've found this book to be quite useful and would recommend it to archtects and contractors that build on spec.
