With Duffy as your guide you’ll be turning out soups, salads, entrées, desserts, and more—all without breaking a sweat or setting foot in a fancy-pants gourmet grocery. So if you’re finally ready to put down that takeout menu, toss the frozen entrées, and pick up a wooden spoon, take heart: A Slob in the Kitchen is the culinary Rosetta stone you’ve been waiting for, an empowering and entertaining introduction to the pleasures of presenting homemade fare without the angst.

If you see her and then read this cook book, you will not want to eat food again. If the cover does not turn your stomach, the five year old mind writing will.

4 out of 5 stars An every day help!.......2004-12-25

I'll admit - I'm a good cook. I can grind my own meats, make my own jams and even make my own potsticker wrapers from scratch.

But geez, I don't want to do that EVERYDAY!

This book, while not for professional chefs, gets kudos from me as it addresses a huge fact of life - you need to feed people everyday, sometimes three times day, while doing things other than cooking. You need easy tasty recipes. This book has 'em.

So for the reviewers who are concerned it's not "haute" enough - it's not. That's not it's job. But it will get you through life and kids and husbands and work without resorting to mixes or prefab junk. It's real. Nuff said!

she's funny. no, really. and the recipes are easy to make and delicious. I'm eating the guacamole as we speak. The only thing I really like to make is a phone call for restaurant reservations or delivery service. the tone makes it less intimidating to try the dishes, and the book is fun to read. i have about eleven high end cookbooks in my kitchen collecting dust. highly recommend.

4 out of 5 stars Ibsen: feminist or insurgent?.......2000-02-15

Although many have cited the play's feminist qualities as the play's main purpose, what many do not realise is that Ibsen was also commenting on society, deriding not only the female position, but also the male one. Torvald is confined in the tortuous world of business, where reputation comes before truth. When Nora admits her fraudulent activities Helmer appears only to be concerned with how the affair will appear. Yet faced with losing Nora in the late stages of the last scene Ibsen's Torvald is a character that we pity. Krogstad can also be seen as a tragic character, although initial impressions are not favourable. During his bribery of Nora, Krogstad's motives come to the fore and similarly to Torvald the cause of his malcontent is his reputation. Krogstad's desperation for keeping his 'humble post' is due to alleged disreputable acts which he is cleared of in the eyes of the law, but which society does not yet forgive. Ibsen therefore, in my opinion, created much more than a feminist play, he created a subversive exclamation.

4 out of 5 stars Trovald and Nora's marriage is like "A Dolls House"........1998-12-16

Is forgery really that bad? To Trovald, it is ALMOST unforgiveable. This book is very good and keeps you in suspense. Trovald character has a problem with treating his wife like a little girl. Not only that but he is also a "power freak". Power is the main source of Trovald and Nora's relationship. Trovald's little 'skylark' is smarter than he thinks. She saved his life and he repays her by getting very upset....at first. I feel that Trovald should treat his wife as an equal, not an inferrior. Mrs. Linde is a character who decives Nora. She is portrayed as her friend and she is, but I think she was wrong in telling Krogstad not to take the letter out of the mail box. It is none of her business if Trovald never finds out Nora forged her father's name. I give this play four stars. You should read this play if you like mysteries. The chilling ending had me wondering... why did Nora say, "The most wonderful thing of all-...."

5 out of 5 stars Divorce - Past and present. Moral laws still at hand?.......1998-09-10

The end of the play had to be modified before it was set up for an american audience. The way women was treated in Norway at that time was nothing like how they were treated in the US. The play broke all the moral rules of US citizens at that time, so the end was made less controversial. Worth reading to get a sense of morality at that time.

      4 out of 5 stars A dolls house: a political commentary.......1997-10-31

I give this book a 7 because it does takle an issue that has been part of society since the start but it is also demening towards women is some instances The play is making a statement about the way that women are treated in Norway at the time when it was written. Nora was Torvald's doll. She was a possesion. The were not in love with each other but instead, with the idea of each other. Do I recamend this book, only if you are boored, it'll only take an hour or two anyways

3 out of 5 stars "Feld Hure - Pleasure Maidens for Nazi's".......2005-10-09

      "House of Dolls" by Ka-Tzetnik 1355633, New York, Lion Library, 1957 (PB), 4 1/4" x 7", 222 pgs.

Translated from Hebrew, this novel describes the 1942 plight of Daniella Preleshnik, 17-year-old Jewess forced by Nazi's into a women's labor camp with motto: Labor Via Joy". Between her breasts she was shamefully emblazoned & tattooed as "Feld Hure" (field whore) with SN A135633. The camp had both Labor & Joy Divisions where she was forced to watch "Public Chastisement" in Execution Square where 20 nude girls, strapped onto chairs, were bludgeoned to death upon order of Master (Mistress) Kalefactress, a criminal prison releasee overseer for Nazis.

Daniella is transferred to Joy Division, sterilized & used as sex slave or Pleasure Maiden in the "Doll House" which holds 50 inmates. These girls are required to provide sex to Nazi soldiers before their departure to the Russian front. During "Enjoyment Duty" they are instructed to smile and act happy - if not, & they accrue 3 bad reports, they are beaten & executed. The 50 inmates are depicted as being arranged into 2 rows of 25 girls each, back to back, & awaiting the ingress of German Nazi soldiers who then arrive & assemble with agonizing fevor at distinctly 2:00 PM daily. Throughout, the Master Kalefactress observes lewd acts.

There is a perfunctory introduction & an inglorious conclusion which is scummy, unsuccessfully written and/or poorly translated, but even if meant to merely mimic a depraved person's thoughts -- it absolutely falls short. Totally lacking is some level of explanatory preface to indicate fantasy, fiction or a level of genuineness or authenticity where "names & places were changed to...", etc.

3 out of 5 stars Slow start, but half-decent........2004-04-23

Ka-Tzetnik 135633, House of Dolls (Simon and Schuster, 1955)

Ka-Tzetnik 135633, Nazi-assigned pen name of an Auschwitz survivor (oddly, there seems to be some controversy as to who Ka-Tzetnik 135633 was; some say it was Yehiel De-Nir, others Karol Cetynski), here gives an account of life in a Nazi prison camp, but in the most roundabout of ways. This seemingly autobiographical novel (viz. Shvitti: A Vision, where he speaks of his own sister in Daniella's role) deals mostly with the stories of Harry and Daniella, a brother and sister living in the Jewish quarters of an unnamed town on the border of Germany and Poland. Roughly the first half of the book is a simple depiction of trying to get along day to day in the Jewish quarters, told mostly from Daniella's viewpoint. To be blunt, it's slow as molasses. The book picks up (and becomes the highly-recommended-by-the-underground book it is) when Daniella, not long after Harry, is taken to a concentration camp and ends up working in the House of Dolls, a camp brothel. Harry, in the next camp over, has been made the camp medic for no reason anyone can discern. There is little plot to the latter half of the novel; instead, Ka-Tzetnik 135633 infuses the whole mess with a painful sense of irony. Imagine an O.Henry story that runs 250 pages and has a far, far darker cast to it than anything O.Henry ever wrote.

There is much to be gained from reading this book beyond the prurient; don't get me wrong. However, I'm guessing that its audience is going to be an exceptionally narrow one; those who both revel in (or are horrified by, but cannot turn their eyes from) degradation (Daniella, I should mention, is fourteen when the novel takes place; this is the dark and ugly flip side of Duras' wonderful novel The Lover) and are willing to put up with the diction that one had thought went extinct with the death of Henry James. Still, it is the literary equivalent of, say, Shoah, the excellent and painful nine and a half hour film that still stands as the be-all and end-all of concentration camp documentaries. It is brutal and unflinching, for all its slowness, and deserves a wider audience than that which it has already captured. ** ½

      3 out of 5 stars I Wanted More Information.......2002-04-17

I was rather disappointed with this book. The author is describing her time during he holocaust and in the camps. She was made to become a prostitute. I know that stating that I was disappointed in the book is probably not politically correct, but it is honest. Sure the book is full of heart breaking stories of what she and millions more went through. There are some details of here personal experiences. I just felt that the author was scratching the surface, I wanted a richer, more detailed account of her time there. Overall I thought it was an average book, but about 100 pages too short.

5 out of 5 stars An essential & compelling piece Holocaust literature.......1998-11-27

An essential & compelling piece Holocaust literature, but not much value for JD/NO fanatics.

This book is hard to find, and is also a hard read. If you have come this far then your search is just beginning. Most booksellers list it as delated or out-of-print. I found a copy at my local library, of all places. But if you persevere, then you will be rewarded with a book that tells you everything you every wanted to know (and probably didn't) about life in a German concentration camp. It recounts the true story of a fourteen year-old Polish Jew schoolgirl who eventually arrived at the infamous "Joy Divsion", which was part of a camp that housed prositutes for the pleasure of German officers.

It ranks alongside "A Clockwork Orange" as one of the two most graphic and haunting books I've ever read. I think some of the imagery will remain with me a long time. There are also many allusions to Orwell's world of "1984", and there are recurrent (and sadly true) references to the Germans' twisted terminology. Even the concept of a barrack of prositutes being a "Joy Division" seems a perfect example of Orwell's "doublespeak".

I had hoped to ascertain a bit more knowledge about Joy Division's influences, but apart from the title, there is little relevance. So by that criteria, there was not much gained by reading the book, but the book became compelling in its own right, and I am glad to have read it, and might read more of his work and the genre. But note, that if your crazy about the band, and don't have the broader interest or think you could stomach this sort of thing, then there might not be much point in reading it in the first place.

Ka-Tzetnik's books are novels, in that they draw on the author's experiences and those of other inmates, but do not necessarily depict actual events and actual people. However, regardless of the context, House of Dolls is not for the faint-hearted; it makes Anne Frank's confinement seem like a Sunday School picnic.

The first link (listed below) is the best if you want info on Ka-Tzetnik & the House of Dolls. It's written as apart of an academic essay, but still quite informative and readable. My major query concerned how the author fitted into the picture, so to speak. The essay explains that it is his sister whom is the central character in the book, which is based on her diary. His character in the book is known as "Harry". The book also mentions his younger brother, Moni. Ka-Tzetnik has also written, seperately, about Moni's miserable and tortured life at Auschwitz. Ka-Tzetnik covers his own story in his book "Atrocity", apparently.

Harry Oakham worked as a middle-grade Civil Servant for twenty-eight years. His dismissal from the Service at fifty-two was due to the end of the Cold War. Strongly embittered, he ventures upon setting up training facilities for Lybian terrorists and the IRA at a red-brick Tudor mansion called Doll's House Manor Hotel. Harry recruits several people for the job: Hermann Rilke, former head of the East German Security, Vassily Zarubin, a KGB tactician, Monika Van Heflin, member of the Red Brigade, Georg Werner and others.
But operations won't run as smoothly as Harry Oakham wishes them to...

3 out of 5 stars No One Wants To Live In A Doll's House........2005-08-03

Henrik Ibsen wrote a play, A DOLL HOUSE in which the central character, Nora, rejects a marriage and life in "a doll's house." He wrote masterfully about women's rights; HEDDA GABLER was another of his strong-willed female characters. Did she or did she not shoot her husband? Or did he kill himself? It's all in the game.

Evelyn Anthony of England calls her novel about international terrorism THE DOLL'S HOUSE. "They call it the Doll's House, this idyllic country estate, acres of lawn, fine dining, and -- at the top of a sweeping staircase -- an antique child's playhouse built into the wall. But something is wrong at the Doll's House what with odd acres being off-limits to guests of the manor. Is the Doll's House the swank hotel it seems, or is it something very different, even sinister?"

Harry Oakham has been put out to pasture in the spy business so he sets up a school to train terrorists in a lovely old hotel called the Doll's House Manor. There Rosa finds former Polish, German, and Russian spies teaching others how to be assassins. There she finds the love of her life -- for one day and night-- Mr. Harry Oakham.

Evelyn Anthony also wrote SLEEPING WITH THE ENEMY which was made into a movie starring the 'Pretty Woman' Julia Roberts. It was about spies and cruelty, too.

This little book contains two short stories by M.R. James and one by R.L. Stevenson. All are ghost tales of one sort or another. James' stories are and . Stevenson's story is . All the tales could be called 'classics' written by 'master story-tellers.' The writing is not boring and certainly flows easily for the modern reader. This is not like reading Shakespeare. is definetly the most interesting and original in its' details.

The longest story is 26 pages so the book can be taken up when you have half an hour to an hour to spare. The book is pocket size so it is ideal for reading on a bus or train.

I must warn the reader that these tales are not particularly horrifying or bloodthirsty, so if you are used to Stephen King or even scarier authors this book may be a disappointment to you.

4 out of 5 stars Houseful of aging women in 1960s London.......2002-01-06

This is an interesting read from an earlier era. Basically, a woman named Amy Doll keeps boarders upstairs, and when she raises the rent, they resort to prostitution. The boarders are four middle-aged to post-menopausal women - one is almost wholesome, one is exotically foreign, and two are active alcoholics.

The novel explores many life situations, romance, poverty, domestic work, etc. A policeman comes to spy on the old tarts (or so Amy guesses), but ends up being a love-interest and an anchor which enables Amy Doll to demand an end to the unsavory activities upstairs.

The author might have made a stronger statement about the working wage, women in poverty, etc., but instead the writing is very plain and lacking in condemnation. The reader is left to draw their own conclusions. The situations are realistic, and this might be called "realism," although the sexual activity is mainly alluded to and not detailed.

It's a readable book, a product of its era. The contemporary reader might be surprised that such a topic could be dealt with in such a _clean_ manner.

Although only one of the four chapters in The Art of Framing focuses on the actual craft of decorating frames, serious crafters and anyone interested in the use of framable objects in home decor should consider investing in this deluxe volume. More than 250 color photos document the history and art of framing, wonderful ways to create effective displays of framed items in the home, and how to decorate frames and mats with specialized treatments (faux finishes, gilding, craquelure, veneers) and decorative effects (stenciling, combing, painted motifs). The section on framing objects and ephemera offers unique ideas that crafters can adapt to show off their other creations.
