Millie Owen was a New Yorker transplanted to rural Vermont. She arrived in the country knowing little about growing things but dug into the subject with enthusiastic dedication, teaching herself all about gardening and edible plants through reading and by trial and error. Her ultimate goal was to enjoy cultivating and harvesting from the wild the widest possible assortment of edible botanicals, including greens, herbs, and aromatics such as garlic, onions, and horseradish.

A Cook's Guide to Growing Herbs, Greens & Aromatics, written in 1997, is now part of The Cooks Classic Library, that growing collection of eternal culinary works from Lyons Press. In this book, Owen shares her enthusiasm and dispenses advice with warmth and intelligence. She reminds you that convenience should be your first thought when planning a garden. Eager for you to have home-grown edible plants at hand, she tells how even apartment dwellers can raise herbs. Typical of her quirky practicality, she suggests using grow-lights in a closet or under the bathroom sink, so you can devote the space on sunny window sills for more visually attractive flora.

Most of A Cook's Guide consists of 47 enchanting sections on individual edibles, from asparagus to wormwood. Among them, Owen's take on lamb's quarters--"Free spinach!"--is typically crammed with poetic images, detailed information on when to pick this versatile wild green, a precise inventory of its rich nutritional value, and a simple, appealing recipe for eggs baked in ramekins lined with blanched greens deliciously blended with grated Gruyère cheese. The sections on most plants include one or more recipes. From Seafood Grilled on a Bed of Basil--as simple as it sounds--to her unique Green Chicken Tandoori Grilled with Potatoes, a dish loaded with fresh coriander, Owen makes your mouth water at the prospect of clear, fresh flavors.

Spend an afternoon with Owen and your view of everything, from utilitarian onions to purslane, a weed "uncannily tuned to the sound of soil being cultivated," will change. Following her lead, and spurred on by Karl Stuecklen's friendly drawings, you may add mildly peppery violet leaves to salads and start tinting your Arroz con Pollo, the Spanish chicken and rice stew, with golden marigold petals. Keep this book in mind for anyone you know who gardens, as well as for cooks. --Dana Jacobi

5 out of 5 stars Tons of great information under one cover.......2007-02-17

I created my first scale R/C plane recently and found this book invaluable. It covers techniques like panel lines, rivets, hatches, landing gear doors and finishing techniques very clearly and logically. The lack of color pictures was not an issue for me at all. Since the book is a collection of articles, in some cases similar techniques are covered more than once -- for example, there are three articles on "covering with fabric". I liked that, since each dealt with using slightly different materials, and allowed me to choose the approach that I was most comfortable with. I learned to mold fiberglass parts using this book, and have had great success with it. If you're building scale R/C models, this is a great addition to your library. I somehow lost my original and just bought another copy.

            3 out of 5 stars A Collection of Articles.......2001-11-02

This book is a collection of how-to articles from different
authors. The articles are well organized but my biggest complaint is
that there are not any color photos it's all black and white. If you are
looking for how to ideas on painting etc it would be more helpful if the
            pictures were in color.

Of all the elements in nature, none is more life affirming than water. WeÂ're born into this wonderful world after swimming in the mysterious elixir for nine months, and then we spend the rest of our days seeking out its sustaining powers. When you consider that two-thirds of our bodies are comprised of water, itÂ's no wonder we are so drawn to it. And when nature doesnÂ't place water where we can easily access it, we have no problem bringing water to us in the form of luxurious swimming pools and hot tubs.

            5 out of 5 stars Inspirational Ideas.......2004-07-12

The projects in this book are out of the reach of most budgets, but the ideas are incredibly inspirational. It's like looking through Architectural Digest for pool designers. I found incredible ideas for my new pool and spa installation -- many things I never new existed and that the contractors I talked with never mentioned. A pool and spa is a major investment. For me, this book was insurance that guaranteed I would get the aquatic paradise and related amenities me and my family wanted. Plus, it's looks great on the coffee table in our new pool house!

            POOLS and SPAS

A coffee table book! If , like me, you want to learn more about the technical side of swimming pools, give this one a pass. In spite of the promise hinted in the promotional text of giving insights to "design details" this book doesn't even come close. Most of the pools are out of reach except to those whom money is no object starting with a pool costing $700,000. If for instance, you want to be educated on the pros and cons of vanishing edge pools, the Author tells us, "they have been overused and misused"-no clarification, no explanation, no examples. Of course none of the beautiful pools pictured in this section fall into either category. Design details? Each very beautifully photographed pool describes the multi-million dollar surroundings, the size of the pool pictured, construction i.e. Gunite, finish-Plaster. This scant, mostly irrelative information hardly qualifies as "design details".

If you want to show your pool contractor the kind of pool you have in mind and hand over a blank check, then this is the book for you. You'll get no feel for the typical cost of the pools depicted (except the one for $3/4M) nor will you be guided as to any of the unseen but extremely important mechanical components required.

I'd keep this book if there was just one piece of information that I could consider valuable advice. Thankfully, Amazon will take it back.

Gracious needn't mean traditional, formal, or reserved. A gracious interior is one that welcomes family and friends and expresses the inhabitants' personalities, through comfortable and stylish furnishings, appealing colors, and carefully chosen decorative touches. Many people long for a home that exudes these qualities, yet they are unable to achieve it, whether due to budget restrictions, lack of knowledge, apprehension about how to begin, or all of the above. Design expert Mary Kelly Selover's skillfully presented sourcebook offers many solutions, through big, beautiful photographs covering a wide range of styles (including neoclassical, Victorian, country, English cottage, Southwest, postmodern, and eclectic), and extensive captions brimming with ideas. Since most of us tackle one room at a time, the volume takes the same approach, leading us from entryway to porch and stopping along the way at every room in the house. Selover analyzes what makes each space work: the color scheme, furniture mixture and arrangements, use of accessories and collectibles, and successful blending of diverse styles. For further help, the pages are peppered with highly useful sidebars that make sense of selecting wall coverings, upholstered furniture, floorings, paints, tiles, and ceiling fans, and a resource list offers suppliers for these items as well as appliances, fixtures, and more. --Amy Handy

                Book Description

For every type of house and for every family's style, there is a perfect porch. Whether you want a quiet outdoor niche where family members can lounge with a good summer read, or a casual front porch that encourages passing neighbors to stop and chat, over the years porch styles have developed that foster these very activities.

This beautifully photographed volume details the porch's illustrious past, from its origins as the portico, or covered entryway, of ancient Greece to its glory days as the elaborate outdoor sitting room of Victorian times. A discussion of different types of porches follows, with notes on the particular character of each.

Suggestions for creating an area for solitude and respite as well as ideas for converting the space into an elegant room for a party include tips on planning for alfresco meals, decorating for festive occasions, and providing the essentials for relaxation.

Pleasures of the Porch also introduces you to the furnishings and accesories of this most romantic of rooms. Bentwood rockers and white wicker settees, string hammocks and wide-striped awnings, floral-washed pillows and heavy Mexican glassware--these are the things that provide comfort and luxury, making the porch a favorite retreat. These chapters reveal which pieces are appropriately sturdy and weather resistant, as well as which are best suited to the ambience of the porch.

Because the beauty of nature is often what draws us to the porch, Pleasures of the Porch devotes a special chapter to potted flowers, window boxes, and other plantings that bring color, scent, and pattern to the porch and surrounding areas.

Filled with vibrant color photographs that capture the enchantment of porch living, this extravagant volume presents hundreds of ways to truly take pleasure in porches.

In this book, designer Stephen Skinner discusses various common themes of feng shui- such as water, alignments, mountains, and wind,-and demonstrates these concepts in 26 houses, restaurants and galleries in London, Hong Kong and Malaysia. 2 out of 5 stars Alice in Yuppie-land.......2007-03-02

I agonized for months over whether or not to buy this book. The review that suggested borrowing it from the library was very influential, but not quite influential enough. I bought the book. Flipping the pages made it look interesting enough, but then I read the text. I'm not sure who the target audience is for this book. The author writes in an almost child-like tone. Some parts of the book seem like she's suggesting a tea party for dolls, and other parts sound like an upscale teenager doing a Martha Stewart imitation at a Sweet 16 ski party. The snacks or appetizers suggested-brie, guacamole-are so cliched it's embarrassing. The "crafty" ideas like making journals for children and guestbooks for adults to jot down daily remembrances is tiresome. And most of the ideas include the hostess playing tour guide or beach bunny all day and then going home and providing a memorable dinner and games night afterword. Doesn't the author think the host/hostess has anything else to do? Lip service is paid to older visitors, or relatives, but no ideas are ever suggested.

A much more enjoyable, helpful book is "Guests Without Grief" by Paula Jhung.

4 out of 5 stars A Few Useful Tips .......2004-11-18

I'd suggest borrowing this from your local library. It's a nicely packaged book with pastel pages, high quality photos and a sampling of hostess tips. The text probably equals 2 or 3 magazine articles, so I'd hate to pay $19 for it.
It gives guidelines for preparing the guest room (add hangers to the closet, flowers on the bedside table, etc.) and a sampling of recipes for impressing your guests. They are lovely sounding (cranberry scones, strawberry iced tea, peanut butter s'mores)and the photos look good enough to eat. Note the Martha Stewart touches like the chocolate chip cookie photo showing a well-loved teddy bear with the cookies and milk.
Along with these are some craft ideas like stamping your initial on your cocktail napkins or layering colored bath salts in a jar for the guest bath. It even includes a couple of pages with instructions for playing charades and twenty questions.
All the ideas are pleasant enough, but overall it seems skimpy at 120 small sized pages.

                    5 out of 5 stars Beautiful Book!.......2004-07-13

A wonderful book from a former Martha Stewart editor with many ideas for entertaining guests in your home. The pictures are beautiful and the recipes and ideas are creative and easy to implement.
