Outdated and inaccurate.......2001-11-05
DECEPCIONADO.......2001-03-04

A work of art for the inquisitive cook!.......2000-04-04
Totally outdated.......1999-12-02
"Some homes have refrigerators with freezers" (yes, about 98% of them) "but most manage with cold closets." I'm the only person I know who has a cold larder (and a refrigerator and a freezer, too). Refrigerators have been in most homes here since the early 1960s at least. "Fresh fruits are scarce". They haven't been scarce for the last 30 years at least. These days you can even get exotic fruits like ramboutan and mangosteen. "Cattle are mainly used for dairy products, rarely for beef." Beef is now as common as lamb. "Pigs are all but nonexistent; pork is rare and expensive and said to have a fishy taste ..." Now common, inexpensive by Icelandic standards and quite good. "Icelanders have a deeply rooted objection to eating birds of any type" - oh, come on, chicken was not much eaten but not because people didn't like it, rather because it wasn't economical to raise the birds on imported grain. They are very popular now. And wild birds have always been eaten - in some regions they were a large part of the diet. "... margarine and butter (all unsalted)". Totally wrong. Both margarine and butter is almost always salted. "Salt is seldom added (to food)" Wrong. Salt is added to most savory food and many people salt their food liberally. "Preferring to talk in separate groups, men and women disperse after the meal, it still being considered "odd" or "forward" if women join in men's conversations." Possibly in the 1950s; certianly not now.
Flatbrauð (rye griddle cakes) is never ever served with sugar or preserves, always with butter and meat or cheese. Steiktir partar are not "thin wafer-like pastries filled with sweetened whipped cream" but fairly thick, flat wheatcakes, deep-fried in fat and eaten cold with butter and often meat or cheese, never a sweet topping. I could go on and on - there are so many errors here.
Reading this book made me realize once again how much Icelandic cuisine and society has changed during the last 30-40 years and the same is true for most other Western nations. This book is supposedly revised and updated but these updates seem to have been minimal in the chapters I've looked at so far (the only sources cited for Iceland that are published after 1967 are The New York Times 1998 Almanac and the Lonely Planet guide). Unfortunately I feel this is a reference work that I can not trust - it is so inaccurate and out of date.
Coverage of India was a total disappointment.......1999-10-07

Perfect for the beginner.......2004-05-30
Not perfect, but surely indispensable.......2004-02-27
Keeping track of prices is also very difficult and I suspect that in some cases at least, the price quotes come from the application of a general formula (data, mintage, denomination, metals used etc), rather than the international or local market itself. This is not much of a problem if you are only interested in identifying your coins or get a rough estimate of their value, but keep in mind that the prices included are certainly not accurate. The coin market is so volatile that it couldn't have happened any other way.
Should you buy the 2004 version (or 2005 for that matter) if you already own a previous one? Since i live in Europe, the recent currency change had a tremendous effect on coin collecting and the euros were first included in the 2004 edition. Therefore, the answer is yes, as i will probably be buying the 2005 edition too, which will contain many commemorative euros produced in the mean time. If there haven't been any radical changes in the coins you are interested in, maybe you should keep the old one for a couple of years before purchasing a new one.
In general, the Standard Catalog of World Coins is a comprehensive Catalog, which -despite its flaws- is indispensable. Major points of concern are the black & white pictures, and the huge size of this monster that really should move to the digital age and come on a CD. Of course software piracy is a key issue, but this media would realy help collectors access the content.
Not perfect, but.......2003-02-19
It is a pre- Euro catalog........2002-12-10
Comprehensive catalog, but with flaws.......2002-08-04
The problem is that, with the endless stream of non circulating coins being issued by governments (and in some cases, "governments" needs quotation marks. As does coins.), Krause is being forced to fit more and more into a volume which has already reached its limits on size, thickness, smallness of print, and thinness of paper. Something's got to give. Unfortunately, what has given is that the valuable reference material (such as original prices for coin sets) has vanished from its pages.
Maybe it is time to put the junk, like Marshall Islands and similar ilk, into a second volume which, like the pre-1900 issues volumes, gets updated only every two years or so. Or put on a CD-ROM.
Fact remains, though, this is an indispensible reference book for the coin collector and dealer. And mostways, it is pretty good.

Finland Brought Alive!.......2002-01-07
"The house is like its master", states a Finnish Proverb, which greets the reader at the beginning of the book. Gaynor depicts Finland to the reader in both black and white and incredibly vivid color. Her narratives throughout the book are wonderful and one will feel that they are totally immersed into the experience of touring the countryside with the author! The richness of the people, portrayed through their simplistic lifestyle, is very much evident.
The reader is also bought into the design of the exterior of the buildings and I loved the pictures of all the different doorways! The taste of the architectural adventure and history is a treat! Sources are also listed at the back of the book if one wishes to purchase Finnish furniture or accessories.
I heartily recommend this book, whether one is contemplating a trip to this Nordic country, or whether one has a fascination for the culture and experience of Finland. This book will easily feed your fascination as you cannot help but devour chapter after chapter! The photographer, Kari Haavisto, is also to be commended for the beauty of the land as seen through her eyes. The reader will definitely walk away with a more revered perspective for the people, their land, and their lifestyle.
