2 out of 5 stars A cure for sleeplessness.......2001-12-16

I know that Dr. Cullen knows what he is talking about, I know that this book is the standard to which other books on management are held, and it is almost always required reading, but this book is instant somnia. Some of the information also seems a little dated and cliche now that every manager in the country uses these techniques. Reading it in conjunction with The Chef Manager really helped me plow through.

I've met Dr. Cullen. He really has his stuff together and knows what he is talking about. Truely a wonderful text.

      Book Description

Focusing on over 20 textiles from the British Museum's fabulous collection, this book explores the wonderful folk embroidery of Indian and Pakistan--in particular the domestic work made by women for their own dowry or family. Illustrated in full and in detail, these richly decorated items--costumes and household textiles--will provide designers at all levels with inspiration for new and unexpected ways of using color and pattern in their own work. In her fascinating introduction the author brings the pieces to life by setting them within their social and cultural context, including information on the protective and talismanic roles of embroidery and the tribal variations in stitch, pattern, and color. In addition, brief commentaries highlight the design features and a technical glossary supports the main text so you can rely on the book for eye-catching patterns as well as refer to it for specific information.

Gorgeous photographs. Most pieces of glass you would only see in a museum. I wish there were more.

        5 out of 5 stars Murano Magic.......2004-06-14

Having recently returned from Venice, I wish I had this book before I left. Mr. Gable's meticulously researched volume offers so much valuable information, any glass collector or any tourist interested in a deeper perspective of the glass art of the city should read this book. The author's grasp of the nuances of the various styles is masterful and gave me a whole new appreciation of the experience I had in Venice.

5 out of 5 stars Glass collector? Want to be one? You MUST buy this book!.......2004-06-11

"Murano Magic" is a terrific volume to own if you love collecting Venetian glass as much as I do. Or if you want to learn the ropes. This exhaustively researched (and yet surprisingly easy to read!) book tells you everything about the big glassmaking families and their works. (I especially liked the historical perspective the author gave to discussing the different glassmaking houses.) And the photos are outstanding. Many glass books I've seen just don't have enough photos to show examples of all the different kinds of Venetian glass (there are literally thousands of styles). "Murano Magic" has wonderful photos and lots of them. I strongly recommend this book to anyone interested in Venetian glass.

5 out of 5 stars Made me see Venice with new eyes.......2004-06-11

It is almost a crime that Amazon is listing this book with "No Photo Available," because it's a real eye-catcher of a volume, with stunning photographs on every page. But don't be fooled by its beauty; this is no mere coffee-table book. Rather, it's an encyclopedic guide, exhaustively researched and engagingly written. I have been fortunate enough to visit Venice several times, but Murano Magic made me see the city and its art with new eyes and a deeper appreciation. I would recommend the book to anyone, but especially to those who are planning a trip to Northern Italy.

5 out of 5 stars An invaluable reference for artists working with hot glass........1997-01-05

The photos alone in this book are worth the $75 purchase price. There are hundreds of examples of murrine shown, varying from simple & complex glass canes (such as those used in millefiori paperweights) to fabulous little glass portraits of famous people of various eras. The pictures in this book are so clear that even if this book was the first edition, published in Italian, a reader could still use the information to improve their cane-making skills. The text discusses the origins of glass and the histories of the great Italian glass houses up to 1924. The careers of a number of individual workers are followed, with many examples of work from various periods in their lives. The construction and assembly of glass canes is explained, with lavish examples of the various components used to create both "complex" and "portrait" canes. All in all, at $75 this book is a bargain for anyone seriously interested in pursuing this aspect of glass art.

          Book Description

Venini. Catalogue Raisonné 1921-1986 offers an in-depth account of the involving company history of the glassworks set up by Paolo Venini in 1921 and carried forward by members of the Venini family up until 1986, the year in which the business was sold off. Alongside the comprehensive catalogue containing some 250 descriptions detailing each item produced in over six decades of activity, the book's curator Anna Venini Diaz de Santillana has traced the history of the 'Vetrerie Venini' glasshouse through each successive master craftsman's term as art director: Napoleone Martinuzzi, Carlo Scarpa, Paolo Venini himself, Tomaso Buzzi, Fulvio Bianconi, and Ludovico Diaz de Santillana.

The careful analysis underlying each critical essay and the breadth of topics covered make this book an invaluable reference work on the creative enterprise and outstanding achievements of Venini & C., long acknowledged as an international hallmark of quality in the applied arts.

With its rich array of illustrations and catalogue of the firm's key production items, and an extensive reference section comprising glossary, bibliography, and list of exhibitions, this book is the most exhaustive directory of the Venini glasshouse's production. In addition to the renowned Catalogo verde and Catalogo rosso, the curator has included the legendary Catalogo blue, and essential reference source for historians, collectors, dealers, and connoisseurs of art.

          Customer Reviews:

          1 out of 5 stars Good reading.......2007-06-26

This book is good for reading on the train to work. And also to date, possibly identify, a piece of glass you have. But not the type of book it is advertised to be; A pocket Reference Guide. Rare and one-of-a-kind items are interesting, but what ordinary person would ever see those in person? Or anything even similar? We thumbed through it at the shop and laughed the whole time.

5 out of 5 stars A great introduction to the subject........2006-08-13

The book is about glass and how the Murano island glassmakers became the world leaders in the field. It's chock-full of facts, names, and dates -- maddenly without citations for the most part, and a very limited bibliography to boot. There are some irritating omissions -- for example, just how long WAS the forced vacation originally? When was it first legislated? As overviews go, it is fantastic, but it's not going to be a complete work on the subject.

          It covers:
          * a general world-level history of glass
          * how glassmaking moved from Torcello to Murano
          * how glassmakers lived and legislation regarding their vocation
          * cristallo development and other artistic techniques (including enamelwork)
          * how Murano's golden age began, and its subsequent downfall and decline
          * glassmaking's rebirth in the modern age
          * some information about modern Muranese works

There are a lot of color photos here that will, I am sure, satisfy any glasswork fanatic. It's a tiny little book, smaller than a paperback novel, but there's a lot of information here. Just don't go into it thinking this is going to be some scholarly paper with tons of citations. It's a popular history with the goal in mind of making people more interested in Murano glass.

Of all the leading Muranese glass factories, Fratelli Toso was among the most versatile and productive, but the least well-known. Where Venini, Barovier & Toso, Aureliano Toso, Archimede Seguso, Salviati, Cenedese, Barbini, and others designed, produced, and marketed fabulous glass, Fratelli Toso focused on design and production. The first company responsible for the revival of Venetian glass, in 1854, Fratelli Toso went on to be one of the major contributors of modern glass design, especially in the 1950s. Designers like Ermanno Toso and Pollio Perelda were rewarded for their accomplishments at Venice Biennali and other international exhibitions. This is the first book devoted to the extraordinary glass produced by Fratelli Toso. With over 400 color photographs of 19th and early 20th century murrine glass, 20th century factory production, and unique art glass; history of the company, chronology, detailed captions, bibliography, index, and value guide this book will be indispensable to the collector, dealer, and researcher. 9" x 12" 415 color photos Price Guide/Index

              Book Description

Murano is a very special place that is well worth visiting, as this book shows. Included are beautiful photographs of glassmakers who still work in an atmosphere similiar to that of a medieval workshop but whose art today is a comb- ination and the text is written by a descendent of one of the oldest glass-making families of Murano.

5 out of 5 stars Over Bridges Across Tables.......2006-04-28

This is a wonderful, intimate book that transports the reader to another time a place full of romance and wonder, but grounded in the human condition common to humanity. The experience of growing up in Murano and Venice is vividly and sensitively communicated in a way that makes the reader feel that he has lived the experience, but at the same time motivates one to travel there to see it, hear it, and feel it. But, of course, if you are from Murano, you already knew what I was going to say about the book anyway. An unforgettable read... highly recommended.

5 out of 5 stars Great under the cover ideas..........2007-09-21

This little treasure will have you looking at cast off items with a more resouceful eye. Many of these items would not get a second glance but the author has found interesting ways to repurpose flea market or discarded items. The project on the front cover is an example of a creative way to use those small side boards once part of old dining room sets. I am a fan of stripes, so the small dressers done in wide stripes has great appeal as well as a playful side. The techniques suggested can be applied to a variety of objects not just the ones illustrated in the book. I can't wait to go out this week end and rescue some unloved objects and give them a new lease on life. Undoubtedly this book is a great find...one of the best for sparking new ideas for those low on cash but high on imagination.
