The best pasta book I have ever used. I have hundreds of cook books and believe me I have tried them all. This is the one of the best pasta books I have found it is easy to use and simple recipes, not difficult ingredients to find and the blend of food is wonderful. The final taste is like Wolfgang was in my kitchen. I really wish he was but the next best thing to him being there.

Since the 1982 opening of his L.A. restaurant Spago, Wolfgang Puck has become a household name. Several restaurants, TV appearances, and cookbooks later, Puck has put together Wolfgang Puck's Pizza, Pasta, and More, a collection of his favorite and most popular recipes. "Eating with family and friends is like having a little party," says Puck. "It is pure pleasure, a relaxing and fun experience. Casual and easy to prepare, these are dishes everyone can make and enjoy."

Puck starts with the basics--stocks, sauces, dressings, and condiments. With chicken or vegetable stock fresh made or stored in your freezer, you have the base for Hazelnut Brown Butter and Herb Sauce (toss with wild-mushroom ravioli and dust with Parmesan) or Tomato Garlic Basil Sauce (good for pasta or pizza). The salads range from a classic Caesar with Homemade Tapenade Croutons to a Grilled Ahi Tuna Niçoise Salad to a colorful stacked Roasted Beet Napoleon. Thin-crust wood-oven pizzas are Puck's signature and he does not disappoint. The Herbed Artichoke Pizza is studded with sautéed artichoke bottoms, niçoise olives, and caramelized onions and the Tangy Chicken Pizza features peppers, eggplant, and chicken marinated in olive oil, lime, jalapeños, garlic, and cilantro. Try the brunch pizza with scrambled eggs and smoked salmon on a leisurely Sunday.

The pastas are equally as enticing. Puck suggests making your own and includes his fail-safe recipe. Particularly temping are Angel Hair with Wild Mushrooms, Asparagus, and Shaved Parmesan Cheese, Crispy Calamari with Chinese Noodles and Spicy Garlic Sauce, and Gnocchi with Braised Veal Shank.

Besides alluring photos of many of the dishes, pictures of Puck and his staff preparing for the 2000 Academy Awards post-party are included (FYI: Haley Joel Osment's favorite pizza is Pepperoni and Mushroom). --Dana Van Nest

5 out of 5 stars A variety of tastes in one cookbook.......2003-02-14

I had never been too impressed with what I saw of Wolfgang Puck and his celebrity chef status until I had the opportunity to try one of his restaurants in LA. While I wasn't blown away by the originally of the menu (there is very little difference from California Pizza Kitchen), the excution was simply terrific. All of the food, though items you can find on many other menus, was incredibly tasty and well done.

Same can be said of this cookbook. There are recipes in it that you will find in other cookbooks, but the flavor of the dishes make it great. My favorites include the tortilla soup and the beet salad with blue cheese, both a nice combination of textures and flavors. While none of the pizza recipes in of themselves blew me away, the pizza dough recipe is one of the best I've worked with. Yeast doughs in general don't like to work for me, and maybe it is just that I finally got the hang of it with his recipe, but it was a great tasting dough which made a great base for any pizza.

5 out of 5 stars The Best Cook Book of All Time.......2002-07-09

This book include many great recipes that can all be made with simple, inexpensive ingriedients. Many a time have I impressed guests by using these recipes. These recipes were created by the well known chef, Wolfgang Puck. After some practice, one cook these delicious recipes and the results will be so outstanding, the food will taste as if it came from a restaurant. Before the purchase of this book, it is best if one has had some previous experience cooking.

3 out of 5 stars Wolfgang Puck's Pizza, Pasta, and More!.......2001-09-05

As always, Puck gives us clever and innovative recipes, but this time they're better suited to professional chefs and restaurant budgets. I particularly point to recipes like the one for balsamic shallots which calls for a whole pound of shallots and one-and-a-half cups of balsamic vinegar. That much supermarket balsamic vinegar would be harsh and unpalatable, while a decently-aged balsamic from a specialty shop would take this dish, just a side dish after all, out of range for the average budget.

Also, I don't think his testing team did a thorough job. I found several errors, obvious to me because I'm a professional too. Regardless of these points, I think Puck is a terrific chef and teacher, although he just may have lost touch with what people will cook at home as opposed to what they would rather eat in a restaurant.

5 out of 5 stars This book is AMAZING!.......2001-05-26

Rarely do I find a cookbook where I actually WANT to make every recipe. This cookbook is one of them.

I've made the pizza's the pastas! Last night I made fresh spinach pasta. It was delicious and fun.

I would HIGHLY recommend this book if you are a lover of California Cuisine. It's worth every penny!

5 out of 5 stars Puck is a master, and this book proves it!.......2001-05-23

Wolfgang Puck's skills as a chef and restauranteur are well established, but with this cookbook he joins the select group of food professionals (like Perla Meyer, Caprial Pence, and Alice Waters) whose knowledge translates beautifully into recipes a home chef can prepare readily. The recipes are not only well thought out and obviously thoroughly tested under home kitchen conditions, but the mix of flavors and textures is sublime. Puck's sensitivity to his ingriedients and his innovative flair for marrying ingriedients stand out: the dishes are exciting to eat and easy to prepare.

We've prepared probably 20 or more of the recipes in this book so far, and we find it perfect for those evenings when you want something pretty wonderful for dinner but you're played out from a hard day at the office.

    Book Description

Named after its founder, Englishman William Blenko, Blenko Glass Company, Inc. began producing stained glass in America in the late nineteenth century. It remains one of the few glass factories in the United States still making modern hand blown production glass. Recently, collectors have been scooping up Blenko designs from the company's middle years of production, the 1950s and 1960s. Three outstanding designers were responsible for the entire design repertoire of that era--Winslow Anderson, Wayne Husted, and Joel Myers. Over 675 color photographs of Blenko glass (courtesy of Blenko Visitors' Center Museum, the Huntington Museum of Art, and private collections), detailed captions, information about the designers, the never-before-published 1960 catalog, bibliography, and index make this book a valuable reference.

    5 out of 5 stars Beautiful Blenko--.......2006-11-05

I easily found all my Blenko items. Price section is a plus!! Photos are excellent. All around great book for serious collector of Blenko!!

2 out of 5 stars Not Much Changed Compared to the First Edition.......2006-03-31

The revised edition of this book is not much of a revision. Except for the cover photo, a half page list of Blenko colors by years, several photos added, mostly from one particular collector, and an updated price list (arbitrary and useless in many respects, because collectors don't really pay much attention it) the book remains the same. If you have the first edition, my advise is not to waste your money on this one.

I was disappointed when I realized the publishing house just used the same document of the first edition, and just replaced several photos. The writer and editors should have used better photos and a more modern page design, and also include photos from several collectors, not just one. A complete revision would have been a worthy endeavor. Unfortunately, the editors chose the easy way out, and the results are clearly mediocre.

    5 out of 5 stars Good 2nd Edition.......2006-02-23

A nice but not extensive revision of the earlier work. If you already have the first edition then the main reason for buying the second is the updated price guide. If you don't have the first edition and you are interested in Blenko, this book is a must have.

    Book Description

This reprint of twelve 1972-1983 Blenko Glass Company catalogs is the third in the trilogy covering Blenkos early and middle years. 1983 marks the beginning of the late?? period when the label was changed. Glass items from the early years of the 1940s through the 1960s have been the most popular with collectors of Blenko Glass, but interest in 1970s items is awakening. Some pieces from the 1970s are already commanding high prices in the secondary markets both on-line and in person. The catalogs are reproduced in their entirety, and a guide to current values for the items is included. John Nickerson and Don Shepherd were staff designers responsible for all of the newly-introduced glass in these catalogs. This volume catalogs their creativity and and its roots in the work of their predecessors, Winslow Anderson, Wayne Husted, and Joel Myers. For the collector and the historian, this is important and interesting information.

    Book Description

"Magnificent color, skilled craftsmanship and creative design make Blenko America's most colorful name in glass," touted a Blenko catalog advertisement. First begun in the late nineteenth century in Milton, West Virginia, Blenko remains one of the few glass factories in the United States where modern hand-blown glass is still in production. Recently, Blenko glass designs from the 1950s and 1960s have caught collectors' eyes. This book presents an exact, full-color reprinting of the yearly Blenko company catalogs from 1962 through 1971, thus offering a complete, well-illustrated record of Blenko glass products, including original retail prices and current market values. This book is most useful for the dealers and collectors of glass who appreciate the beauty and "timely glass design" of Blenko.

    Customer Reviews:

3 out of 5 stars Good reference book for collectors.......2000-12-14

I began collecting Blenko glass shortly before I bought Ms. Pina's book earlier this year. I refer to it often when I am searching internet auctions. Initially it helped me determine whether a price was in line with the fair market value. Lately I have been using it to determine to my own satisfaction whether an unmarked piece truely is Blenko. The pictures are very good quality. The only drawback to the book is that is it woefully short on text. It would have been beneficial if the book contained some in depth discussion of Blenko craftmanship and how to distinguish their products from the other WV glassmakers, especially since they all had a tendancy to copy one another.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent guide to creating "what works and why" with quilting designs.......2006-09-19

Written clearly and concisely with equally understandable graphic illustrations, this book delivers on its introductory promise--that "you will discover the tricks and techniques for choosing appropriate quilting designs for your quilt tops and how to create your own unique designs." Alex Anderson's chapters on "Choosing Quilting Designs" and "Drawing Quilting Designs" are among the best written on these topics to date.

Whether you are a beginning quilter or seasoned master, the chapter on "Choosing Quilting Designs" offers you the analytical skills to look at quilt tops and "learn what works and why" with quilting them. This analysis will not only help you in choosing quilting designs for your own quilts but will also help you to better understand and evaluate the quilt art of others.

Alex's chapter on "Drawing Quilting Designs" teaches you how to create these linear designs for quilting. Highlighted are eight-section and twelve-section designs, the eight-pointed (Lemoyne) star, cable, feathered wreath, borders (cables and feathers), border or sashing corners, repeat designs, curved-line designs, grid designs, and original designs. Yes, original designs that *you* will be able to create using Alex's examples as your guide.

In conclusion, Alex offers five quit projects and a large pullout of quilting designs to help you work through examples of designs that are successful with the various pieced and appliquéd shapes in these projects or on projects of your own.

There are many other wonderful books on the market that support this one in assisting you with expanding essential skills in your journey as a quiltmaker. A few that particularly stand out are as follows:
              1. For quilt marking: "Mastering Quilt Marking" by Pepper Cory
              2. For a no-mark approach to quilting designs: "Show Me How to Create Quilting Designs" by Kathy Sandbach
              3. For accomplishing the quilting stitches

              2 out of 5 stars What a disappointment.......2005-09-22

This book contains information from 8 quilters. Cheryl Greider- Bradkin, Ami Simms, Helen Kelley, Merikay Waldvogel, Margaret Miller, Marta Amundson, Flavin Glover and Jan Myers-Newbury. We learn to make a seminole sweatshirt, improve your quilting stitch, ribbonwork reverse applique, date quilts, blooming quilt grids, pieced collar with seminole ribbons, log cabin variations, and hand-dyeing fabric. I enjoyed the information on dyeing fabric and was disappointed in the rest. There are quite a few pictures of scenery, the ocean, forest, meadows, mountains. I guess somehow that belongs in a quilting book? There are some nice photo's of old quilts. I won't be making anything from this book but perhaps you will. I don't think it's worth more than a couple dollars.

5 out of 5 stars Quilt with the best.......2000-05-28

I have had this book for 4 years. I never tire of looking at it. It gives a general view of how to. Great for being inspired. At the time I bought this book I was interested in fabric dying. Jan Myers-Newbury gives wonderful description on how to dye fabric in gradations of colors. Ami Simms section on "Improving Your Quilting Stitch", has good ideas. Marta Amundson's work is exciting. She quilts nature and animal motifs in the background of her quilts. These three artists interest me, but that is where my interests lie. Many artists give advice on what they do from log cabin, sweatshirt seminole design, applique, quilt collecting, quilt grids. I love it. Great for quilting library collection.

It is rare that I find a Quilting book that is really worth purchasing for my collection. This one is exceptional with fantastic design ideas - very creative. There are so many ideas I would like to try myself.

This book is a sort of history of the rise in popularity of quiltmaking. It follows the growth of C&T Pulishing, one of the best quilt book publishers operating today. I loved the timeline of book covers at the bottom of each page. I couldn't believe how many of the books I have in my collection. There are also lots of tips and stories from their authors, including Alex Anderson, Ruth McDowell, Roberta Horton, Elly Sienkiewicz, Harriet Hargrave, Judith Montano, Jean Wells and so many more. The last part of the book features 70+ original blocks (with ilustration) created by the authors.

She's such a famous interior decorator she goes by one name: Clodagh. She designed Robert Redford's Manhattan townhouse and regularly revamps the offices of entertainment-industry bigwigs. Total Design introduces readers to her design philosophy--a highly ambitious and authoritative set of quasi-spiritual suggestions about space that reveal why she's such a guru. In the introduction she writes, "Often when we contemplate a space and how it can be improved we begin with the material (What kind of flooring do I want? Should a buy a new sofa or re-cover the old one?) rather than the spiritual (How can this room help me live better? What am I not getting from my home that I could be getting?)." Incorporating ideas as varied as feng shui, aromatherapy, and color therapy, Clodagh resembles a New Age spiritualist--borrowing elements from various religions to form her own system. Her book is as much about quality of life as it is about what to buy, and much of her advice is indispensable: where to hang "provocative" artwork (in walk-by areas), what to do with "troublesome" windows that look out on the neighbor's house (replace clear with filtered glass), and how to contemplate your space so you understand its virtues. This is an ideal book for amateur designers or do-it-yourself types seeking serious inspiration.--Emily White

                Book Description

"To truly support us, a home has to stretch beyond its material properties and sustain our complex human needs." This philosophy is at the heart of every environment that acclaimed designer Clodagh creates, and it represents an entirely new and sustaining way to look at interior design.

Total Design is concerned with the experience of living and not simply the look of it. It encourages an ongoing awareness of our surroundings to keep us energized and our shelters alive, not static. Using a process she calls the Four C's, Clodagh reveals how she helps each client envision a project, first by contemplating the space as it is, then by cleansing it of unnecessary items and clarifying the individual's goals, needs, and desires, and, finally, by creating a space that is uniquely his or her own.

In chapters devoted to the senses, nostalgia, small spaces, the influence of nature, melding personal and professional identities, privacy and retreat, and more, Clodagh shows how our relationships to the places and things we've experienced can be used to shape our environments while encouraging continued growth and exploration. Filled with sensual textures and unexpected details, these are vibrant rooms that are at once supremely practical and lushly indulgent. Sections dedicated to materials, lighting, displaying art, and using color illuminate the principles of Total Design. A comprehensive workbook provides a blueprint for putting these principles into practice and setting personal priorities.

At once innovative and timeless, minimal and luxuriant, Total Design is a celebration of homes that are deeply personal and serenely beautiful.

"A home cannot be truly beautiful unless it functions in harmony with who we are. This book is about pleasure: discovering what pleases us and creating an environment that will celebrate those qualities and sustain us."
                -- Clodagh

                Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Great inspiration, but ..........2004-04-27

As a book by a high-end designer about her work this is a fantastic peak into her inner design thoughts. For the huddled masses who will never be able to afford such designs there is excellent general guidance in the extensive list of questions in the last section. As with almost all design books, there is no direct help with designing for a modest home. That is partly because the interior design profession, by its own admission, only reaches about 4% of their potential market, and that 4% rarely includes modest homes.

However, if you have the imagination and creativity required for interior design then this book will stimulate ideas for modest homes. If you don't have artistic talent then buy the book, hire a qualified designer, and point them to the photos you like. Most of the effects presented by Clodagh can be done inexpensively. You don't need to order a $17,000 couch to have a living room that fits your desired mood.

                2 out of 5 stars Good concept, so-so execution.......2002-01-09

I agree with the author's premise and was looking forward to getting this book so that I could make the most of my home. Unfortunately, the examples tend to come from the Rich & Famous. The author name-drops and shows extremely expensive homes and furnishings. I'd like to see this author do the same kind of book showing solutions for ordinary American homes using typical American furnishings. I don't mean cheap. I just mean typical. If the author's answer is that the ideas can be "translated" easily to any budget or home, then why doesn't the author SHOW such translations?

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful book from a wonderful designer.......2001-10-03

If you can't get Clodagh for your project directly, you can still incorporate many aspects of her original and wonderful design style for your home. It's very well laid out with Clodagh outlining in clear detail how to approach every room and situation imaginable. The book is also filled with one gorgeous photograph after another of Clodagh's work. An original book from an original woman and a treat for the eyes and mind. Your home will be a happier that you got it!

4 out of 5 stars Intimidating, but still very useful.......2001-07-01

From the lush photographs, it's obvious that Clodagh's usual design client is not the likes of me (a student). The photos and text detail the author's design process for people such as Robert Redford and recording studio executives, who naturally have somewhat larger budgets than my own, and live in fabulous penthouses in Manhattan and have guest homes in California.

The photos of the homes are a bit intimidating, but the author's attitude is not. She seems to genuinely want every person's home to be as beautiful and functional as possible, working within the boundaries of location and budget. And even if your own preference is not for the rather minimalist, Zen-like look she favors, her design principles are adaptable to any style.

Toward that end, her workbook at the end of the book is great. It is basically a list of questions to ask yourself during the redesign process, and takes into consideration things like a home office and childrens' needs. I found it especially useful during my move to a new apartment. Asking these questions helped to solidly define what I needed in a home, and consequently narrowed down my choices to a manageable number.

My only minor criticisms are of the layout and the feng shui. The text is frequently interrupted with pages of lists and the author's thoughts on color, which makes for rather disjointed reading. And the author relies very heavily on feng shui, which is baffling is you're unfamiliar with it, as I am.

5 out of 5 stars Total Design is inspirational.......2001-05-17

Clodagh's Total Design is more than just a design book. It's beautiful photography and inspirational instructions made me aware of the importance of feeling comfortable and calmed by my environment. The workbook in the back of Total Design was especially helpful in applying Clodagh's "Four C's" to my home. I would highly recommend this book to those who are interested in design as well as those wanting to improve the quality of their surroundings!
