      3 out of 5 stars General info.......2007-10-03

This book does a really good job at being a GENERAL reference guide. A buyer will likely be a bit disappointed if the purchase of this book is being considered for a specific information. For example: You could not help buying a surplus nagant revolver or mauser 71/84. Now you're wanting to get Info on cooking up some Ammo. You'll not find any helpful data or deminsional drawings (except for very common cartridges) You'll get a bit of (not entirely unbiased) history that you already knew, a little load/ballistic data that you'd be better going to a loading manual for.

The organization is in such a manner that is difficult to find a certain cartridge. In fact, I would say that it's been over organized to the point that complication smites simplicity.. On the plus; I've never not found a round that I was looking for after some searching.

If you'll be doing a lot of work around ammunition This is a good buy, as general and random as it is, that you'll be cracking open again and again.

I purchased this book in conjunction with another book, not knowing wich would better suit my needs. If I had to choose I'd keep the other, "The Handloader's Manual of Cartridge Conversions" Check the reviews to help in making a selection if you havn't already.

This is the best book on cartridges I have ever read and I have read 100s of books on cartridges.

      5 out of 5 stars A Beginner's Reloading Guide.......2007-04-10

This review of commercially-manufactured cartridges will teach you about the history of firearms and introduce you to some unusual types.

3 out of 5 stars Decent reference work.......2007-03-13

This book is a generally decent review of most of the commercially manufactured cartridges of the world, plus good sections on obsolete, military and wildcat cartridges. It's a good first resource for finding basic information about specific cartridges and serves as a starting point for further research.

The wildcat section is interesting and has tidbits about some of the most unusual cartridges but there was a total lack of discussion of the plethora of 20 caliber wildcats available. No mention was made of the 20 Tactical or 20 Vartarg, or several other fairly popular 20 caliber wildcats. Yet four major bullet manufacturers make a range of bullet sizes in this dimension and several quasi-custom rifle makers chamber rifles in these calibers. I found this annoying that while considerable space was "wasted" on 10 to 14 caliber cartridges, which virtually no one except a few individuals make bullets or arms for, no space was allocated to the 20 calibers which are rapidly gaining popularity. It's a pretty large oversight.

        Book Description

What happens to a revolutionary town after the revolution? This apparently simple question frames Spent Cartridges of Revolution, an anthropological history of Namiquipa, Chihuahua, Mexico. Officially, the revolution of 1910-20 restored control over land and local politics to the peasantry. But Namiquipan peasants, who fought alongside Pancho Villa, have seen little progress and consider themselves mere "spent cartridges" of a struggle that benefited other classes.

Daniel Nugent's approach combines an emphasis on peasants' own perceptions of Mexican society after the revolution with an analysis of the organization and formation of state power. He shows that popular discontent in Chihuahua is motivated not only by immediate economic crises but by two centuries of struggle between the people of Northern Mexico and the government.

2 out of 5 stars Only thing lacking are space aliens............2005-04-15

I don't normally review books, but this is over the top. I purchased it because it is a nice compendium of "last battles"... Let's just say that there are two problems throughout this book. Much of it seems to be taken from Victorian ( or other) accounts that were greatly embellished - artillery in use all over the place at the Siege of Constantinople 1453!?!?!? Just one example - plus there is an annoying "Great White Man" theme. Locals are savages being "saved" by France, Britain or whatever 19th century power occupies them; almost every one of the natives seems, to the author's surprise, to resent foreign occupation. The Nazi's would blush at some of the the various atrocities committed by seemingly every non white, or non Christian in the book.

I guess I just like to read eyewitness accounts unembellished...

        3 out of 5 stars Desperately Desperate.......2005-01-21

The one question I would put to the author can be summed in five words: The Alamo; where is it? I have to 2nd what was said by another reviewer on this item regarding the French Foreign Legion. They were in a lot of bad spots, but so were a lot of others. Perhaps it's just that I live in Texas, but when I think about soldiers in a tight spot, the Alamo leaps to mind. Apparently, this was not true for this writer. It is well-written military history, but there's no theme that ties it all together; no lesson learned; no truth uncovered. That would have been nice.

3 out of 5 stars Short Military Stories, the sequel.......2004-10-13

This is another compilation volume, collected writings of one guy who writes a lot of military history. Several of the pieces in this book are reprints of articles that originally appeared in various magazines. Unlike many other compilation volumes, there's no attempt at any criteria here, other than soldiers in desparate circumstances. So you get stories from centuries ago, and from Viet Nam, and you get stories a couple of paragraphs long, and some 20+ pages long. Some spend a lot of time on analysis of a situation, others none. Some of the actions involved here are large, others very small. There's no attempt at organization beyond chronological order.

There isn't any attempt at an overall analysis, some lesson the author learned while studying these battles, some truth he might have learned. While the writing's decent, the stories are all over the map, and the last half of the book seems devoted almost exclusively to the French Foreign Legion, which the author apparently admires beyond all other foreign soldiers. There's only one story from the era of the U.S. in Viet Nam, but there are several from the French involvement there.

Again, I don't want to be too critical. If all you're looking for is stories of battles, then this may be the book for you. If, on the other hand, you want to know why things came out the way they did, you'll have to look elsewhere.

5 out of 5 stars To the Last Cartridge.......2001-01-06

I first read this book back in 1995, when I was in basic training. It was my only escape from the monotony of Army indoctrination. It is a very enjoyable read filled with stories of valiant last stands and last minute reprieves won by hard fighting soldiers throughout history. Unfortunately my drill sergeant took my copy away from me and I have never seen another copy of this book in stores since then. This is the book that got me started reading military history books, and I have never found it's equal in terms of sheer entertainment value and ease of reading, I strongly recommend purchasing this book.

5 out of 5 stars This Book Whups You Like Porcupine On A Rodeo Horse.......1998-12-02

This has got to be one of the best reads out there for history books. It is about some of the most gripping and inspirational last stands from Western military history. Military history books are just about all I buy these days and I rarely read one more than once. I read this book three times! Like a dork, I loaned it to a friend and never saw it again. It's out of print now, but if you can get it, don't hesitate.

          Product Description

This report was created for global strategic planners who cannot be content with traditional methods of segmenting world markets. With the advent of a “borderless world”, cities become a more important criteria in prioritizing markets, as opposed to regions, continents, or countries. This report covers the top 2000 cities in over 200 countries. It does so by reporting the estimated market size (in terms of latent demand) for each major city of the world. It then ranks these cities and reports them in terms of their size as a percent of the country where they are located, their geographic region (e.g. Africa, Asia, Europe, Middle East, North America, Latin America), and the total world market. In performing various economic analyses for its clients, I have been occasionally asked to investigate the market potential for various products and services across cities. The purpose of the studies is to understand the density of demand within a country and the extent to which a city might be used as a point of distribution within its region. From an economic perspective, however, a city does not represent a population within rigid geographical boundaries. To an economist or strategic planner, a city represents an area of dominant influence over markets in adjacent areas. This influence varies from one industry to another, but also from one period of time to another. In what follows, I summarize the economic potential for the world\'s major cities for "centerfire rifle cartridges" for the year 2007. The goal of this report is to report my findings on the real economic potential, or what an economist calls the latent demand, represented by a city when defined as an area of dominant influence. The reader needs to realize that latent demand may or may not represent real sales. For many items, latent demand is clearly observable in sales, as in the case for food or housing items. Consider, however, the category "satellite launch vehicles". Clearly, there are no launch pads in most cities of the world. However, the core benefit of the vehicles (e.g. telecommunications, etc.) is "consumed" by residents or industries within the world\'s cities. Without certain cities, in other words, the market for satellite launch vehicles would be lower for the world in general. One needs to allocate, therefore, a portion of the worldwide economic demand for launch vehicles to both regions and cities. This report takes the broader definition and considers, therefore, a city as a part of the global market.

This study covers the world outlook for centerfire pistols and cartridges that can be interchanged between rifles and pistols of 30 mm or less across more than 200 countries. For each year reported, estimates are given for the latent demand, or potential industry earnings (P.I.E.), for the country in question (in millions of U.S. dollars), the percent share the country is of the region and of the globe. These comparative benchmarks allow the reader to quickly gauge a country vis-à-vis others. Using econometric models which project fundamental economic dynamics within each country and across countries, latent demand estimates are created. This report does not discuss the specific players in the market serving the latent demand, nor specific details at the product level. The study also does not consider short-term cyclicalities that might affect realized sales. The study, therefore, is strategic in nature, taking an aggregate and long-run view, irrespective of the players or products involved.

A hip collection of easy-to-make, fun-to-wear, and stylish-to-display crafts from the fifties and sixties, it features 50 projects culled from vintage craft publications, including more than 10 new retro-inspired projects. This unabashedly tacky craft compendium includes clear instructions, tools and techniques, and enough irony to fill a popsicle-stick purse.

                      Book Description

Leonardo da Vinci was the true Renaissance man. Not only was he one of the greatest artists ever to live, but he was also a truly gifted architect and creative mind who devised amazing machines centuries ahead of his time.

His list of interests and achievements are extraordinary; as well as artist and architect, he was astronomer, researcher, scientist, experimenter, anatomist, and inventor.Leonardo's most acclaimed paintings are the Mona Lisa in the Louvre, Paris and The Last Supper in the refectory at Santa Maria delle Grazie, Milan, Italy.

But in many ways his greatest legacy are the hundreds of pen and ink drawings and sketches which are now in museums and collections around the world. These explain, in his remarkable mirror writing, his calculations and hypotheses for the mechanical operation of his various ideas.

This book attempts to explain who this great genius was and why he became such a creative man. It looks at where he came from and his education, who his influences were, and how he made his way in the world to become the most remarkable man of his time. His work was founded in strict science and based on a profound analysis of ancient and traditional sources, but it was his curiosity which really drove him. His inquisitive mind led him to investigate every field of knowledge and his life's work is an extraordinary synthesis of art, science, and technology fused in theoretical and practical experience gathered from a long and productive life.??
