4 out of 5 stars Fat-Free Living is easy and delicious!.......1998-08-26

I picked up this book initially because I liked that it has a two-week menu in the back. I wanted to be able to get a better feel for balanced menu-planning and thought this might be a good way to start. Since I didn't want to eat all of this food by myself, I had three co-workers sign up for our "Fat-free Lunch Club." We've been on the lunches now for three weeks and absolutely love it. The meals are quite tasty and we all feel better now that we're getting a good balance of fruits and vegetables in addition to the chicken, fish etc. of the entrees. We love the gourmet touches (i.e. tomato-basil dressing on a roast beef sandwich) which are simple touches but make a tremendous difference in flavor. Best of all, we're each able to eat for about $20 per week. We're saving money and feeling great! For the most part, the recipies have all been easy to plan ahead and make the night before. There are no pictures, but the book is conveniently bound in a spiral notebook for ease of use. My husband likes the food, too, so easy dinners are already planned when I get home. My only criticism of the book is that sometimes the recipies make 8 or more servings, which is far too much for my little apartment-sized kitchen and freezer. I highly recommend this book for anyone who wants to eat healthier and get a good variety of dishes.

      Book Description

This beautiful book examines the first century of Navajo and Pueblo metal jewelry-making in the American Southwest. Beginning in the late 1860s, the region's native peoples learned metalworking and became accomplished silversmiths. Their work was united with a long-standing native traditon of beads and ornaments made from turquoise and other natural materials. The cross-cultural appeal of this jewelry continued into the mid-1900s, despite competition from tourist jewelry and mass-produced imitations. By the 1950s and 1960s, masters such as innovators Kenneth Begay and Charles Loloma created a legacy of fine art jewelry that is prized today. This development is discussed in the context of social changes and adaptations over the century. A values reference guide is also provided.

This book is a visual feast and factual whopper! With vintage Indian Jewelry gaining popularity, this 200 page hardback book is a 'must read' if, for no other reason than to enjoy the pictures . . . fabulous! Also, much credit is deservedly given to artisans; it was refreshing to see the old timers names alive once again. The price guide is nice but very wide ranging. I spotted one or two factual errors but in a book of this scope, they are minor. I am always concerned about 'back scratching' when a high volume of the photo credits go to such a limited number of sources (owners/collectors/sellers), which is prevalent in this volume; otherwise, I believe you can rely on the very well written facts and figures. The historical overview is excellent and detailed. But most important, if you have any old Indian jewelry similar to those found in these pages, you have something of significance and value. You can bet online auctions will be replete with references to this beautifully illustrated book. Like I said, must read . . . even more . . . must own!

I like this book.I have other books by Paula Baxter, and I new that this one was going to be just as good. I make Indian jewelry and I'm always looking for picture books on the old Indian jewelry and this book is "chuck full of pictures of old jewelry and tools that were used to make the jewelry". The pictures are clear, clean, and big. If you like the way the indian jewelry looked back in the early part of the 1900's this is the book for you. Paula, did a vary nice job and I wish to thank her for this book.

5 out of 5 stars The one book on American Indian jewelery you must own........1999-08-16

As a collector of Indian art, jewelery, pottery and rugs, I had the wonderful good fortune to know and consider the Hopi Master jeweler Charles Loloma my friend.

Finding a book on American Indian jewelery was almost impossible to come by until this great book by Dexter came out in 1992. The artists, their work in magnificent color will move anyone to want to own some of this jewelry.

From it's beginings late in the 19th century jewelery was the Indian method of carrying their wealth around in the form of necklaces, braclets etc, Indian jewery was mainly of two schools. Most prominent was the Navajo and the other Zuni.

Then in the mid 1960's came a Hopi indian Charles Loloma. He was the Picasso that was going to revolutionize American Indian jewelery and he did. This book is a testament to Charlie's followers who now produce jewlery that is both modern and magnificant. Buy the book then go out to an Indian Art shop anywhere in CA, AZ, NM or even NJ and you will not be able to resist owning someting.

I cannot recommend this book highly enough for anyone who intends to decorate or remodel their home. As the slipcase states, it is an unrivaled visual sourcebook with almost 1,000 color photos and illustrations.

It is not just full of prety pictures of someone else's house decorated by experts, but full of projects you can do yourself as you are led through the steps, details and directories of where you can obtain the materials.

I've had this book since it came out and have shown it to many friends who have gone out and bought their own copies. An indespensible book for anyonew thinking of undertaking a project themselves, or to afford them the ideas and knowledge to have others do the work for them.

5 out of 5 stars The best do-it-yourself decorating book........2003-02-08

I can't put this book down. I've read it from cover to cover twice. I never thought I could be creative but this book really inspires me to try. Everything is so easy and she is right on about taking things apart and putting them back together again. I've made several things in her book with the stuff I have and can't believe how good everything looks and her instructions are super easy. The pricing guide helps me (a novice garage sale person) know what to pay. This book is a real inspiration and I love it. I'm going to buy more for my friends.

5 out of 5 stars A Terrific Book for Decorators.......2003-01-30

This is the best book I've bought. I can't tell you how many things I've done and all the good ideas. I especially like the options--not having to do it exactly. There are so many different things I've used like she says that will work. I never thought of decorating that way before but it is working and I just love it. Other books I've gotten maybe have 10 to 15 projects and this is full of projects and ideas. I will never look at a lamp the same way again and I've made lots of tuffets for my craft booth and that alone makes the house payment. Thank you Ms Kincaid.

        5 out of 5 stars I love this book.......2003-01-28

This is the best home decorating project book ever. I saw it on the New York Design Center's web site. It's their book of choice so I thought I'd try it and they were right. It gives me so many different ways of doing things with stuff I have around the house plus I love flea markets and garage sales. My home is gorgeous and it cost me next to nothing. I like that she gives you so many options of things to use. There are enough projects in here to keep me busy for years and they are all very easy. I'm giving this book to all my friends. I absolutely LOVE this book.

1 out of 5 stars garage sale decorators's bible: how to find treasures,.......2003-01-18

l am so disappointed in this book after having this book on my wish list for 6 months l really looked forward to getting this book delivered, what a disappointment, l am sending this book back, something l have never done with over my 200+ craft and decorator books l have purchased from amazon alone.
The book is paper back, the sketches are terrible and the few color pages are even worse, the quality is terrible. Not to mention the cost of the book, save your money, this will soon be available at your next garage sale or favorite thrift store!

5 out of 5 stars WONDERFUL! Very highly recommended!.......2002-05-15

I *LOVE* this book! It gives explicit, step-by-step directions to repair/enhance all types of finds, from picture frames to caned chairs ... e.g., how to do the caning, how to enhance simple frames or repair fancy ones, all kinds of ways to treat wood, and zillions of other things for just about anything you might find at a garage sale. Although many are of no interest to me, I would have happily bought it for the framing and finishing sections alone -- and the book just arrived, so I haven't begun to see what else is included. My only complaint is that there should have been photos of finished items so we'd know what we're striving toward (and, given the hefty pricetag for a paperback, that doesn't seem unreasonable) ... At the very least, there should have been a diagram for each and every project. (There are color photos, but perilously few, and all but one was of no remote interest to me.) Nevertheless, the wealth of information makes this a true bargain, and I sure love mine! This would make a great gift for anyone who frequents garage sales, is on a tight budget, bought (or is thinking of buying) a fixer-upper, and/or is a do-it-yourselfer. Even if you don't go to garage sales, this will show you what to do with junk from your basement or your parents' attic, etc.

I agree with the person who complained about how many blank pages there are in this book. Most of these ideas have been dispensed before, by better writer and decorators than this author. However, what caused this book to get one star in my eyes was the complete and utter disregard for punctuation rules- every third sentence ended with an exclamation mark. Trite ideas dispensed by a trite writer.

...I not only own this book, but am a loyal fan of The Budget Decorator and belong to her online newsletter and have taken her workshop. It seems to me this reader bought this book when it wasn't what she was really looking for. This book is full of great ideas and inspiration, the fact that it doesn't have photos just leaves more room for great ideas! As another reviewer mentioned, the author is trying to help us find our own inspiration!!! As for the note pages, I welcomed them as a way to keep the ideas I liked in focus...and while I saw one typo in the book, it was certainly not to the degree this reviewer claimed. Nothing in this book is redundant or tired, and if the reviewer from Glendale thinks she can find all these ideas for free on cable tv shows...well than that just tells me the author knows what we want, and I think she has given it to us! (And frankly, I'd have to watch tv 25 hours a day to find this many great ideas!)

Great book with excellent bulleted ideas for every room in your house...it will make you rethink all the money you have wasted through the years decorating your home, and shows you how to create a space that is special to you and your family...

1 out of 5 stars THIS BOOK GETS 2 "THUMBS DOWN".......2003-06-12

Unfortunately, I recently bought this book, sight unseen. If I had seen the book priced at 10 cents at a yard sale, I would NOT have purchased it. If I could give the book a rating of minus 10 stars, I would gladly do so. As an avid artist and craftsperson, my personal art/craft library contains 268 books, and this is the worst book in my collection. Chapters 1 through 9 contain 98 pages, 10 of which are BLANK, with just the word "Notes" at the top of each page. The book contains NO ILLUSTRATIONS or PHOTOS. The 88 pages that are not blank mainly contain just "lists" of tired, old, and obvious ideas for decorating "on the cheap," e.g., use old blankets for pillow covers; make stencils from cardboard; use sheets to make curtains; hang LOTS of baskets; etc. The book is redundant, e.g., in at least 3 places, readers are told to "buy plants" or "get cuttings and grow plants" with which to decorate. Instructions, when given, are unclear or somewhat "iffy": Readers are told they can make a clock, by buying a pre-cut round of wood and marking the center just by "drawing two lines." That method works great with squares, but not with circles. Chapter 3 advises readers to "Use old flannel or oxford shirts to recover a chair seat. Button up the shirt, and then cut the material so the buttons run up the middle of the seat." Sit on buttons?! Can you spell O-U-C-H?! Every chapter that I read contained errors (typos; spacing; grammar). There is no index, so even if a reader happens to find something worthwhile, but forgets to bookmark it, they might be very hard-pressed to find it again. Most, if not all, of the information in this book is readily available elsewhere, i.e., in hundreds of art, craft, and decorating books and magazines, as well as from free, or mostly free, resources, such as libraries, the Internet, and TV programs on HGTV, TLC, Discovery, and Oxygen, just to name a few. I give this book 2 "thumbs down"!

5 out of 5 stars Lots Of Great Ideas That You Never Thought Of.......2003-03-13

The ideas are creative and do-able at such low cost with stuff that you can find around the house. They are wonderful and though many people have money, why waste the money when you can do it for less? Then you can do more or save the money for something that you cant get cheaply. I think Kathleen has done a great job with the book. I have a creative mind myself and am a student of design. I have to thank Kathleen for giving me more great ideas to do around the house without spending too much money.

              Book Description

A comprehensive how-to handbook for combining color and texture with 180 ready-to-use palettes.

This guide for homeowners and professionals offers 180 foolproof combinations for effective colors and welcome textures. Each example is displayed on a single spread using color and texture swatches that clearly show how to create a coordinated decor. The carefully selected palettes include flooring; paint colors and accents; fabrics for furnishings and drapes; and surface colors, textures and materials.

The book provides dozens of options to suit any taste. Each scheme starts with a floor color, whether existing or newly installed. For example, "Country Casual" features a traditional oak floor paired with muted yellow-greens, deep orange and azure blue, plus the textures of green plaid wool and mossy green chenille.
