5 out of 5 stars My most treasured cook book.......2004-07-23

This book has been my bible for entertainment since I bought it at least 7 years ago. I was on business in Austin, Texas and found it in the airport book store, luckily. Homemade salsas, bbq sauces, ointments and marinades, guides to grilling and smoking all kinds of beef, chicken, pork, fish, lamb...how to make sausages, how to make pizza from scratch and cook them on the grill, how to grill sandwhiches...tons of bbq type side dishes...alchoholic and non type drinks, and special deserts. All my most favored recipes have come from this book. Not one thing I have made has been a disspointment and this book has helped me earn the reputation of being one of the best bbq entertainers around.

My personal favorites:

spicy lemon chicken
molasses mop beef ribs
avocado salsa
picadillo salsa
Western Red BBQ sauce
bbq pizza (make dough from scratch!)
smoked t bone steaks with green chile butter
marinaded and grilled mushrooms, red onions, vegetables
rosemary new potatoes
grilled sweet potatoe planks
marinaded red pepper & jalepeno Cole Slaw (no mayonaise!)
jack daniels pudding cake
pineapple tequila
pineapple tequila margaritas
Grilled peaches with walnut oil on vanilla bean ice cream

I am going from memory on the titles, but I have captured the essence. If you like to grill, or have an affinity for chips and salsa, smoked meats, spicy foods, beer or tequila..this book will not dissappoint. Even if you don't love all those things you will find killer recipes here. And hey, I don't even know the author (unfortunately) I just love this book.

5 out of 5 stars One hot cookbook.......2003-08-24

This book is full of great-tasting, well-written recipes. I have been using it for a number of years with consistently good results. There is a useful resources section in the back for getting ingredients you might not be able to locally.

5 out of 5 stars a great summer cookbook.......2000-05-06

I love the Kerr family thinking when it comes to food-- big, blowsy, can't-have-too-much-of-a-good-thing type thinking. I've used this cookbook for five years, and everything I make has great, authentic Tex-Mex taste. I'd take any advice Park Kerr is giving out.

4 out of 5 stars Sizzle Spicy Smackaroo.......1998-08-14

Great cookbook! The recipes are easy to understand and even better tasting. Mr. Kerr has a flair for setting the mood for each of his recipes with anecdotal descriptions of how to serve and what to serve with the dish. The only drawback is sometimes the recipes call for ingredients that are not easily obtained (common grocery store), but he warns of that in the book! It's a good read and a great cookbook.

Included in each potter's listing is the location of the firm, a brief history of the company, the span of years from the firm's establishment until its dissolution, and any former and subsequent company affiliations associated with that firm. The marks associated with that potter are presented in chronological order. 5 out of 5 stars Kowalsky Book Surpasses Godden's Standard Reference.......2002-01-08

For years, serious collectors of pottery and porcelain relied on the works of Geoffrey Godden to assist them in their search for manufacturer's marks. Other authors produced different books, but Godden always remained the standard. Those days are over as Arnold A. and Dorothy E. Kowalsky have now produced what will undoubtedly become the definitive ENCYCLOPEDIA OF MARKS. Emphasizing the products of American, English and European earthenware, ironstone and stoneware from 1780-1980, the Kowalsky's present - as their book jacket states - "Makers, Marks, and Patterns in Blue and White, Historic Blue, Flow Blue, Mulberry, Romantic Transferware, Tea Leaf and White Ironstone." Containing 688 pages and hundreds of manufacturer's marks, this masterpiece highlights - and cross references to Geoffrey Godden - American Potteries and Marks, English Potters and Patterns, and European Potters and Patterns. Also included are notes from selected authorities spotlighting transfer printing on blue and white ceramics, historical Staffordshire, Flow Blue, Mulberry Ironstone, White Ironstone and Copper Lustre Decorative Motifs on White Ironstone China. The authors have diligently provided a guide for readers to know how to use their book. Some books are written for information; some for pleasure. This wonderful addition to the world of antiques and collectibles provides both information and pleasure. You really can't get any better than this!!

Book Description

This richly illustrated portrait of North Carolina's pottery traditions tells the story of the generations of "turners and burners" whose creations are much admired for their strength and beauty. Perhaps no other state possesses such an active and extensive ceramic heritage, and one that is entirely continuous. This book is an attempt to understand both the past and the present, the now largely vanished world of the folk potter and the continuing achievements of his descendants. It is a tribute that is long overdue.

From the middle of the eighteenth century through the second quarter of the twentieth century, folk potters in North Carolina produced thousands of pieces of earthenware and stoneware—sturdy, simple, indispensable forms like jars and jugs, milk crocks and butter churns, pitchers and dishes, ring jugs and flowerpots. Their wares were familiar and everyday, not innovative or unusual, because they were shaped through generations of use for specific functions. The utilitarian forms were so commonplace and embedded in daily life that few individuals documented the craft. Turners and Burners is the first book to chronicle these pottery traditions, with close attention to distinct regional and temporal patterns and the major families involved. It explores in detail the traditional technologies used, from the foot-powered treadle wheel to the wood-fired groundhog kiln.

Terry Zug became interested in North Carolina pottery in 1969 shortly after moving to Chapel Hill. In 1974 he began documenting the craft and traveled throughout the state recording the reminiscences of potters, former potters, and members of potters' families who recalled the old craft in remarkable detail. He systematically photographed and cataloged old pots, located early shop sites, and carefully recorded the remaining waster dumps of broken shards and decaying equipment. His primary source, however, was the potters themselves. Their tape-recorded interviews provide an insider's view of their world and reveal the powerful underlying logic and autonomy of their craft.

5 out of 5 stars One of the Best.......2006-02-23

My wife purchases unique pottery, antiques, etc. on a regular basis. As we live on the border of North Carolina, we often were advised to get this book. I recently gave it to her as a gift, and she loved it. She has an extensive library of reference works, and considers this book "one of the best".

5 out of 5 stars Well-written, in-depth account of folk pottery in N.C........2002-03-30

This book is for anyone who is interested in the history of pottery in North Carolina. The book focuses on pottery as necessary to the rural way of life. Turners and Burners makes the reader appreciate the functional designs of the early potters.
It explores three rich pottery areas in the state - Catawba Valley, Seagrove area and Moravian potters. Many families in these areas are still turning out pottery. The book goes into great detail about Burlon Craig, who is considered the last folk potter in North Carolina.
Sections of the book reviews glazes, kiln construction and functionality of different container designs. Also, it reviews whimsies, face jugs and ring jugs and their place in the pottery tradition of North Carolina.
Turners and Burners gives the reader a great appreciation for the history of pottery in the North Carolina. It will make you want to plan a trip to Seagrove or the Catawba Valley.

5 out of 5 stars A teriffic account of the history & tradition of NC pottery........1998-08-31

Turners and Burners is a must for anyone interested in North Carolina Folk pottery. It presents the history starting with the first potters to settle in the region to the evolution of the trade that lives on today.

Charles Zug does an outstanding job of presenting the culture and the mindset that guided the craft through generations of potters spanning over two centuries.

And the technologies of the craft is given ample attention, through interesting descriptions, drawings, and photographs. A prime example is the discussion of how alkaline glaze kilns differed from the salt kilns in terms of design, firing methods, and durability.

This is a great book, full of useful information to the researcher as well as praticing potters.

4 out of 5 stars Good examples of molded utilitarian stoneware 1880-1920........1999-03-12

Book illustrates good pictorial examples of molded utilitarian stoneware (pitchers, butter crocks, pie plates, etc.) made between 1880-1920. Artwork, flowers, birds, etc. decorations are usually molded into these pieces. Most illustrated stoneware is first covered with white glaze and then with additional diffuse colored glaze usually blue. Some pieces use various solid colored glazes. A few illustrated pieces use stamped blue decoration over white glaze. This book, however, does not really deal with true salt glaze, hand decorated pottery prior to 1900. For this reason the title could be somewhat misleading to some collectors.

    Book Description

Hundreds of color photos of productions pieces, garden ware, glaze types, and a detailed 200+ page catalog section. This book traces the roots of Zanesville pottery from the Ohio Encaustic Tile Co. through the E.G. Bowen Co., to the present. Readers will find utilitarian stoneware, artware vases, jardinieres and pedestal sets, and amazingly large hand-turned garden ware. AUTHORBIO: Jon Rans, native Hoosier, artist, musician, author, and conservator/restorer, has many published on various American art potteries and related subjects. He has worked as a professional photographer and enjoys collecting and researching little-known Arts and Crafts potteries. Ceramics restoration is his field of expertise and he is currently head of the Art Pottery Restoration Department of the New Orleans Conservation Guild. AUTHORBIO: Glenn Ralston began collecting Zanesville Stoneware in 1976 because of the pleasing color tones and the comfortable masculine heft. This led to him searching flea markets in the Northeast for "ancient" motion picture incidentals for the then-to-be American Museum of the Moving Image. AUTHORBIO: Nate Russell has a background in the fine arts, having studied sculpture, photography, and painting at the Rhode Island School of Design. He has worked professionally as art gallery curator, retail store and furniture showroom display artists, ornamental metalworker, and woodworker. He has been dealing in and collecting American vintage ceramics since 1990. REVIEW: This book features the beautiful, sometimes overlooked Zanesville pottery, which exhibits simple forms and harmonious glazes. Detailed background on the company is provided, hundreds of color photographs, and original company catalog pages.

5 out of 5 stars "stoneage modern" heartland story, a chapter of history.......2002-03-02

I am pleased to be associated with this Zanesville book. We are all indebted to Jon Rans that his hard work overcame some unforseen challenges. So, I trust Rans will follow up with a further encylopedic sequel to this real heartland story of history, people, commerce, art and industry during periods of massive cultural changes in America.

5 out of 5 stars Zanesville Stoneware coming of Age.......2002-02-19

Great publication that reflects the brilliance of Jon Rans and his collaborators.
One of the best pottery chronologies ever written considering that most of the records of this company were lost in a couple of trajic fires.

Some of the pictures could be of higher quality and the layouts of the pictures vs. discriptions is a little confusing.

4 out of 5 stars Much needed, could've been better........2002-02-09

It was with pleasure that I received and read the first pass on the history of this long misunderstood pottery company. Although the author makes a good attempt to document the history he falls a bit short. Many followers of this pottery know the confusion regarding the business relationship between Zanesville Stoneware and Francis Duggan of The Old Pot Shop in Norwalk, Connecticut. Rans had the chance to set the record straight that Zanesville made all the Old Pot Shop marked pots but either chose not to or did not fully understand the relationship. Although this is perhaps the most important aspect of the history for the collector it received a mere short paragraph. The pictures are sufficient and good if one considers that this is the only resource other than original catalogs, but more time spent with lighting would have gone a long way. Good book for the pottery lovers shelf but one that will undoubtedly be improved upon some day.

3 out of 5 stars One is enough.......2006-01-19

Some of the furniture in this book is pretty amazing, but I was disappointed in the end, and unfortunately, I bought three of his books so it was compounded. Much of the furniture is rustic casework, decorated fabulously with twigs and bark, but still casework as best I can tell. If you're looking for artistic inspiration, you're not going to get a hint of construction details! Many of the chairs and beds are also pretty "straight"--lots of hickory stick furniture.

The antler work is nifty. The staircases are amazing. The photography is good. There're just too many right angles for my taste in "rustic."

5 out of 5 stars The best in the business........2005-10-14

Very well composed and illustrated rustic furniture examples on large high quality pages. Great examples from the best in the business, most being aquaintances and friends. My wife and I also live and work in the Adirondacks, build furniture and have an art studio, but not yet to the standards of these "guys".

                      5 out of 5 stars A Magnificent Visual Tribute.......2001-03-14

This coffee table book is a magnificent visual tribute to the rustic artists who dedicate themselves to creating "exquisitely handcrafted home furnishings and decor straight from nature". The photographs by the author are stunning and provide a rare visit to some multi-million-dollar homes. This is a wonderful book to display and to share with family and friends. As with all of Ralph Kylloe's books, the production is top-notch, the text is informative and thought-provoking, and the photography is awe-inspiring!
