This is a fine book for the coffee table, less for the foundry. Short on process specifics, but many fun stories about the casting profession.

5 out of 5 stars Mosaic has never looked so fabulously trendy !.......1999-01-20

Any one with an eye for detail & a creative bone in their body will love this. Much more contempory & fun than the more 'crafty' selection of mosaic making books on the market. Whilst retaining the traditonal format of 'introduction - gallery - techniques - projects - useful addresses, etc' the projects are far from traditional in style if not in technique. This will probably appeal to the more style conscious person because the ideas in the book are more fitting in a modern setting but the principles in making decorative mosaic objects for the home are obviously traditional & well presented. The book has a 'clean' feel to it but I hope that anyone buying it will not stay clean for long as they cover themselves in glue, grout & bits of glass & ceramic (not literally, of course!) This will appeal to anyone who wants to try out a new & rewarding craft but is afraid of that word -"CRAFT" aghhh! This is so stylish you'll be staying in on Saturday night to make a mirror ! I might buy another copy to keep one clean ! Mosaic doesn't have to be folky, religious or in the swimming pool... It is THE up & coming decorative art & these boys have made it their own. Why not have a go ?

4 out of 5 stars A good design and how-to book, but not a "sourcebook"........1998-07-25

This is a good book of inspirations and instructions for mosaic vases, tables, mirrors, and pots. There are lots of illustrations and patterns. However, the title is misleading; there are only a few sources listed, none of which have web site info, toll-free numbers, or a description of what they supply.

            4 out of 5 stars very inspirational.......1999-12-15

This book (along with Locktov/Clagett's "The Art of Mosaic Design") is a very fine book to inspire those who make mosaics and those who appreciate them (the mosaics, that is... not the mosaicists -- particularly). Neither are books for the beginner as far as making the projects, but the mosaics can allow you to see what is possible. There is an emphasis on Martin Cheek's own work, that's true, but hey... he's pretty darn good.

            5 out of 5 stars Fantastic.......1999-10-27

            Great photos of great mosaics.

            4 out of 5 stars Inspirational!.......1998-11-02

This is a great book if you're looking for ideas or wondering how to handle a particular subject. It's divided into sections by subject matter, such as Still Life, Birds, Animals and The Human World. One page (for example) shows 3 elephant mosaics done by different artists, and explains how different techniques and styles produce a completely different end result.

The author's work predominates but there are a substantial number of other artists too. At the end of the book is a directory of the artists and their contact details. They're predominantly British, although there are a few Americans too.

What this book *doesn't* have is DIY projects and in-depth explanations of techniques/tools/materials.

If you buy it for the right reason - inspiration rather than instruction - you should be very happy with it!

2 out of 5 stars Not all it is made out to be. .......2006-06-22

I expected more when I ordered it. The 256 page book looks big and substantial in the picture but in fact only measures 20 x 16cm. I also don't know if the spiral bound pages will survive the back and forth paging that this "source" book was intended to induce in it's purchaser.

The actual "teaching" part of the book is very brief but quite to the point. It is not meant to be instructional I assume.

Once you get to the meat of the book, it is just more of the same page after page. It is not so much a source book as a book that shows you 50 different ways to fill in a letter, number or some such arbitry item. Almost all the pages look similar, and by the halfway mark, I gave up on finding that wow thing that would endear this little book to me. It is boring and bland.

A lot of effort went into putting this book together. One can see that, but unfortunately, it does not inspire. The tiles used for the innumerable little sample pieces produced for the illustrations are cheep looking and the colours are unattractive.

The 256 pages sound very impressive when one does not know that size of the book is only slightly above that of a paperback novel, the images tiny, the subject matter repetitive and the pages claustrophobically tight in layout.

This one is on my shelf and there it has gathered dust since I bought it a few months ago. Sorry!

A fabulous source of ideas and inspiration for mosaic artists at all levels. The designs are in the categories of: animals, birds and bees, sea creatures, symbols borders and patterns, food, and a mix of things from musical instruments to transport modes.

Each design has two or three colour templates .

The opening sections deal with basic techniques and materials, as well as tips on colour and design. However, the real value of the book is in the designs available for copying and I would recommend another book for the complete beginner with a bit more step-by-step guidance, The one I used for my first project was Making Mosaics: 15 stylish projects from start to finish, by Martin Cheek.

This book will be an invaluable addition to the mosaicist's bookshelf, and will pay for itself many times over for the useful design sources.

                    Book Description

In their fourth book, authors/designers Karen Witynski and Joe Carr forage through the American Southwest and mountains of Mexico in search of the furnishings, accents and architectural elements that reveal its time-honored beauty and character. From rugged Arizona ranches and haciendas to contemporary Santa Fe homes, Adobe Details celebrates the natural materials--earth, wood and stone--that proudly bear evidence of the human hand. From adobe walls textured with agave fibers to hand-adzed vigas and gleaming Saltillo-tile floors, the adobe home is alive with rich surfaces that evoke a casual, timesless context. Adobe Details will show you how to achieve the look.

Adobe Details is a small but powerful book. It is well written and beautifully photographed by Karen Witynski and Joe Carr. This book satisfies the reader's appetite for Mexican and New Mexican decor while challenging him or her to venture out to one of the several locations featured. Ideas abound for the novice decorator. If landscape design is more your style, this book will also energize your outdoor spirits!! The vivid color and simple elegance make the book a "must have" for any library, especially those chocked full of information on the southwest.

5 out of 5 stars Especially for architecture buffs.......2002-07-12

Adobe Details by award winning Mexican design specialists Karen Witynski and Joe P. Carr is an impressive survey at the culture, furnishings, and especially the architecture prevalent in the American Southwest and the mountains of Mexico. The majority of Adobe Details is devoted to breathtaking, full-color photography of grand living spaces; brief text captions and essays provide rich detail on the history, functionality, and symbolism of these inspirational edifices. Adobe Details is especially for architecture buffs and a welcome addition to academic and community library interior design reference collections.

                    Book Description

Building or remodeling an adobe house is an artistic endeavor, with all the satisfaction-and occasional frustration-of any artistic effort. But once you've lived sheltered by adobe walls, you won't want anything else. Introducing the traditional ins and outs of each architectural element-roofs and ceilings, doors, windows, floors, walls, and portals--The Small Adobe House is both an introduction to adobe structures and an idea book for people who want to remodel a classic home or build a new one. Beyond the basics, Reeve and Reck illustrate possibilities for frills, show that any kind of interior decor is accepted by adobe walls, and give examples of contemporary innovations in adobe houses. The final word on the small adobe house is that it combines the best of several elements: comfort, adaptability, tradition, and almost limitless possibilities for expansion and personal expression. Agnesa Reeve's informed commentary and Robert Reck's exquisite photographs combine to create a magical adobe experience. Agnesa Reeve, a historian, is past president of the Historic Santa Fe Foundation. Her writings about southwestern architecture and cuisine have been published in journals, and her books include From Hacienda to Bungalow (UNM Press, 1988) and Cooking with a Handful of Ingredients (Cimarron Press, 1993). She lives in Santa Fe. Robert Reck is a contributing photographer to Architectural Digest and has been published in most of the major architectural journals worldwide, including Architecture, Architectural Record, A+U, and Hauser. He was the lead photographer for the book Santa Fe Style and has significantly contributed to the monographs of many preeminent architects, including Antoine Predock and Robert A. M. Stern.

                    5 out of 5 stars Wonderful Book.......2007-07-06

This is a great additional to our book collection and is a must have for anyone who is designing their house with the "Santa Fe" look. The pictures are just wonderful!

5 out of 5 stars Small Adobe House.......2006-11-04

This is a beautiful book. It is an excellent addition to my library of Adobe house books. I will be building an adobe house in the next couple of years and this book is a great reference.

5 out of 5 stars Gotta love Adobe.......2006-07-08

Great book showing some fantastic homes. Lots of great ideas for when I move west and get an adobe. If you have an interest in this type and style home this is a good book to have in your library.

                    1 out of 5 stars Poor Choice.......2006-04-19

In comparison to other books available about adobe houses, the content of this book offers little range and depth. Other choices were less superficial.

                    5 out of 5 stars A delightful surprise!.......2002-04-25

Robert Reck's photography is beautiful (as always). It was a wonderful surprise to see MY OWN Santa Fe work in the book!

The book gives a great feel for the beauty of the Adobe Home and the time tested vernacular of the details.
