Daylight is precious now and the nights are long and cold. It is time to gather our family and friends around the menorah and celebrate Hanukkah, "the Festival of Lights." The glow of the candles is reflected in our children's faces, full of anticipation and awe. Warmth, light, miracles...this is Hanukkah. ~page 69
This is a Writer's Digest Award Winner and it truly is the Ultimate Holiday Guidebook for families. You will find information on eleven significant Jewish Holidays:

Salmon Mousse with Cucumber Dressing, Homemade Hummus, Challah, Chicken Soup, Beef Tenderloin, Sour Cream Potatoes, Broccoli Soufflé and Mandel Brot all make their appearance along with a number of delicious favorites. You can also make Passover Brownies with matzo cake meal.
There are diagrams you can copy and an Appendix filled with blessings. The index is excellent. This book would be perfect for teachers. It is essential for parents and for any student of Jewish traditions.
As one who learned how to make chicken soup from a Jewish friend in Seattle, I can say Jewish food has always been a favorite. I even make my own Matzo balls for soup and have mastered the making of Challah. As a child, some of my most comforting memories included eating meals at Jewish parties. I seem to remember eating the creative cake cones as a child.

Book Description
This book illustrates the wide scope of English china made from the late eighteenth century through the early twentieth century. The focus is on the decorations found. A number of different methods and types are defined and illustrated. Examples include molded and relief work, hand-painted decoration, luster finishes, overglaze polychrome colors, and underglaze transfer designs. Over 450 color photos representing more than 100 English manufacturers are featured, an current values for each piece are included. AUTHORBIO: Mary Frank Gaston's study of antiques began during the mid-1960s when she and her husband lived in New England which is so rich in our nation's history. She has authored many titles, with subjects including Flow Blue China, Blue Willow, English China, Limoges Porcelain, R.S. Prussia, Antique Brass Copper, Knowles, Taylor Knowles China, and Art Deco. Most of her books have seen multiple editions and/or volumes, as her books are extremely popular among collectors. REVIEW: In this book author Mary Frank Gaston encompasses English china made form the late eighteenth through the early twentieth centuries. Not surprisingly, she picked the time period that is the focal point of interest for most collectors of true antique china. There are more than 450 full color photos in the book. The subject matter ranges from Chelsea Grape to Wedgwood, with plenty of offerings in between on such china as Majolica, Ironstone, and Staffordshire.
Customer Reviews:
The color photos prove an invaluable aid.......2002-05-10
Mary Frank Gaston's English China provides identification and values for enamel, oriental themes, and other decorative themed china works. The color photos prove an invaluable aid in the identification process.
Disappointing.......2002-03-26
Collector Books did not live up to its generally fine quality of productions in this guide to English ceramics. The text is awkwardly written, confusing or contradictory in places, and colorless, lacking enthusiasm. Worse, a very large number of the illustrations are seriously shadowed, a most annoying flaw in an identification guide. On the plus side, the range and selection of objects discussed is ample, and the illustrations of marks are helpful.

Best Quilt Book .......2007-03-19
this is the top of the line in patterns. Service from Amazon couldn't be better. One happy customer.
Not for the young quilter.......2007-02-10
There are many ideas for quilt blocks in this book, and most of them are very... cute, but not in a good way. I personally don't like making blocks that are cats or dogs. This would be an excellent book for an older quilter who does things the old way, but if you are young and want something fresh and fun, try out Black Mountain Quilts, Cotton Way, or Kim Diehl.
Very useful book.......2007-02-01
Useful book with multitude of block patterns - I like especially the variety of applique designs. I have one problem: the binding is too tight to enable proper photocopying of designs on inside of pages, a nuisance when you want to enlarge a pattern.
501 Quilt Blocks: A Treasury of Patterns for Patchwork & Appliqué.......2006-08-25
I received this book in top condition and withing 10 days of ordering. Thank you!
Everything you ever wanted to quilt, and then some.......2005-09-17
There is only one thing I don't like about this book: It is so much fun to look at and read, I'll NEVER get around to cutting and sewing. But if I ever do make any of the fabulous blocks in this book, I am going to come out with fabulous quilts, hangings, table runners, and anything else I want. There are a few projects in here too, and the instructions and photos and pictures are all clear, concise and fun. I love this book, for the blocks and for the inspiration.

Not impressed.......2004-08-30
Not as impressed as I thought. This has some very nice examples in it, but no way of knowing how much fabric, how to cut and piece together. Very self explanitory. I was looking for something a bit more definitive for putting the blocks together.
Lovely to look at..........2004-06-10
I agree with many of the reviewers - I found it very difficult to work with the patterns (tracing, no seam allowances, no light/dark suggestions) and the instructions were a tad confusing. I haven't put together any quilts from this book. However, it's a great book to look at and dream.
Not really worth the space it takes........2002-04-04
What a waste. This was one of the first quilt books I bought and I guess I was looking more for an encyclopedia or how-to for a number of basic blocks. This is NEITHER.
I also felt cheated about the number of blocks promised. They've thrown in a lot of very simple applique blocks to get to the 101.
I have since gotten Barbra Brackman's Block base program and that is a true encyclopedia. There are many rotary cutting or other technique books that would be so much better than this for actual block or quilt making. This has no cutting or assembly suggestions.
A great motivator........2001-04-18
This book is a really great motivator. I am a novice at quilting : I am currently on my fifth one. Most of the quilts I have done were pretty simple designs and this book challenged me with more complex patterns. It has inspired me to create some interesting variations. I admit that the instructions are a bit confusing, but overall I think everyone can benefit from it. The blocks vary from very simple to complex. From beginners to experts, this one has something for us all......
Great Eye Candy - But Not For Beginners.......2000-11-01
This is a large hardcover book with the pages spiral bound inside the cover so that the pages lay completely flat when the book is open. The big appeal of this book is played up in the title - the patterns are full size and can easily be traced onto plastic suitable for making templates. On the left side is a description of the block, sample images made up in two different color schemes, and the piecing instructions. The right hand page is the line drawing of the block with all of the pieces illustrated. In the beginning of each chapter, there are illustrations of sample projects that are very creative and attractive. My favorite section is the one on pieced borders. They seem like they would be a lot of work, but there are some beautiful patterns.
The book is beautifully illustrated and wonderful to look at, but it is only really usable for more experienced quilters. I would definitely steer a beginner away from this one. The piecing is very complicated on some of these patterns and there are no guidelines to help determine what the complexity level is on individual patterns. The piecing instructions are sparse and somewhat confusing. There is no discussion of fabric needs or advice on color arrangement, the only help being the visual illustrations. For a quilter with experience making templates and doing complicated piecing, this book has some wonderful blocks to play around with. I was looking at some of the blocks and thinking that they would be much easier to put together with the foundation piecing method and this would cut out some of the work having to make templates.
If you have been quilting awhile and enjoy a challenge, add it to your wish list.

Excellent quilt book with a lot of patterns and variations to each.

Good Quilting Instruction Book.......2004-07-14
My mother gave me this book when I began to quilt. It gives great basic instructions on overall quilt making, from design to completion. There is even a section on the criterion by which quilts are judged at shows. Except for the classic pieced designs, this is incredibly dated now. (Some of the 70s-80s designs and colors featured look hideous and downright laughable.) Because this was written before the invention of the rotary cutter, the quilt piecing instructions are dated, too. But if you want good instructions on traditional pieced blocks and hand quilting, this is a good source. A well-loved favorite on my bookshelf.

Dorothy Draper: an inspiration to her field! .......2007-10-12
As one of the previous commentators stated, this book is a wonderful book in terms of historical significance to the Decorating/Interior Design field, but this book is certainly not a "how to" book on decorating. Therefore, if you are looking for a basic "how to decorate" book, then this book may not be a way to go.
HOWEVER......
If a person is buying this book as an historical reference book to their home decorating (or interior design) library, then this book would be a wonderful addition.
For example, if I were a person majoring in a form of home decorating field, then this book would be of tremendous value. WHY?...because so many ideas that Dorothy Draper implemented are still being used today or still inspiring home decorators today!! (eg: if you were to look at Jonathan Adler's current design concepts, you will see alot of Dorothy Draper's influence in Jonathan's work). Thus, Dorothy Draper's influence to the home decorating field is truly immesurable.
This hardback book is large in size. The photos are amazing. Most are in black-and-white since that is how the photos were orignally taken. But still,....the author describes the colors that would have been used in the book's B&W photos, and THAT helps the reader so much! I could certainly visualize what the B&W photos would be like in color, thanks to Carlton's wonderful descriptions.
The Height of Glamour.......2007-07-12
When High STYLE was "in-style" Dorothy Draper was the queen of design... Every page reflects her understanding of space, light and perfection!!! This isa great read for the design professional as well as the casual reader. Her life story and her work are inseperable - she loved beautiful things and had an un-erring eye for the dramatic. "In the Pink: Dorothy Draper --America's Most Fabulous Decorator" is a visual treat as much as it is a fun read! As an iterior designer I see her design principles are as easily applied today as it was in the age of glamour. I would give it a 5!!! all across the board.
The gorgeous terror of excess, or "How I was blinded with ornament".......2007-06-01
While Kelly Wearstler was still in the womb, Dorothy Draper was jetsetting the style world in a solid gold Deusenburg that was fueled exclusively on Chanel no. 5. Her contribution to the interiors and custom fabricated furnitures and fixtures has forever seared a scar into the homes of hollywood and beyond. Liberace himself would be sent into a seizure over Dorothy's hallucinagenic oppulence and fearless approach to her indulgent, decorative torture chambers. Get this book and blow your mind.
Absolutely gorgeous book.......2007-04-06
It took a while for me to finally decide to drop that kind of coin on a book, but its absolutely gorgeous and worth the price. Very cool to page through and see her imprint on decorating and design through the 30's up to now. You page through a Domino magazine and see a cool black and white modern print on a white french chair and think 'wow' and then you page through the book and see that she was doing it in the 40's. Just makes me wish I had my own chandelier fabricator and my own master plasterer as those seem to be her tricks of the trade. Beautifully put together and one of the few decorating books I actually wanted to READ every word and not just page through for the pretty pics.
As History & Biography: Bravo! As Design Inspiration: Blah!.......2007-04-02
I bought this book for my wife, who is an artist and color consultant, because I thought she'd enjoy seeing an iconic designer known for her bold use of color and thematic environments -- especially done on a grand scale. And, yes, you will find page after page after page of grand ballrooms, hotel lobbies, mansion-size dining rooms, and so on here.
80% of them, unfortunately, are photographed in black & white. So much for the bold use of color.
There are two great color photos -- pages 161 and 207 -- that show off Draper's lush, vibrant style. But the rest of the book is either slightly out of focus color photos, color illustrations and old ads, or black & white photos. It's just sad in how it under-represents Dorothy Draper.
"But be fair," you say. "Dorothy Draper's peak took place before the advent of color photography." That's fine. But this book is a perfect example of the rare publishing project that truly is BEGGING for Photoshop colorization. On page 53, for example, the text refers to a House & Garden magazine article which declared one of Draper's most visible design projects, Hampshire House, to be "a gold mine of decorating ideas, particularly in color." And yet all four photos on that spread are in black & white, as are the spreads before and after it. A very good Photoshop artist -- and several do perfect, true-to-life work -- could give those old black & white shots the vivid, vibrant colors that would represent Dorothy Draper properly and accurately without changing Draper's style one iota.
As I say in my title, as a history (of the advent of superstar designers) and a biography (of Draper), this is a very good book that should not be overlooked. But how can you do a history of bold interior design, or a biography of a top interior designer, without SHOWING the vivacious use of color which was central to both? That's like doing a bio of Abe Lincoln without including the Gettysburg Address.
So is this worth seeing? Definitely. Worth buying used? Probably. Worth buying new? Only if you're rich.
